Being stationed on Okinawa?

Question:

I'm going into the USMC and I'm really contemplating requesting being stationed on Okinawa. I'm wondering what it's like there for example the locals, and nightlife and how conditions are on base all in all if it's worth it. Also if it's important I'll be going there as a fresh 2nd Lt.

Answer:

Okinawa is a wonderful place to live in: people, food, semi-tropical atmosphere, music, beaches...everything is beautiful.

But, one thing you must keep in mind is that local people in Okinawa are fiercely opposed to the presence of US military bases. They like Americans and American culture, but not US military bases. So, when you meet local people, don't tell them that you are a member of USMC. Instead, you'd better pretend to be a tourist from the US.

Let me repeat: people in Okinawa are very nice, very friendly. They have no prejudice against Americans, but, you should always keep in mind that they don't like US military. You should talk and act accordingly. Then, you can enjoy your life in Okinawa.
