It depends on your phone's service contract, do you have international roaming on it?
Even if you do, I RECOMMEND AGAINST IT, because you will incur huge overseas roaming charges. Some people come back with thousands of dollars in bills because they didn't read their phone contracts.
Better if you rent an iphone in Japan from the airport phone rental office.
