Why won't my foreign debit/credit cards work in Japan?

Question:

I used my MasterCard debit card several days ago to withdraw money from a 24 hour 7/11 ATM and it worked fine. I went to use it again today and it wouldn't work. It wouldn't even give me the same options it gave me the other day. I tried another 7/11 ATM and had the same issue. I even tried my Visa credit card and it still wouldn't work. On top of that, my boyfriend tried his debit and credit cards as well and they wouldn't work either. We contacted the banks for each of our cards before leaving the US and they approved them for use abroad throughout the duration of our stay in Japan. There is apparently a 10 minute period from 11:55pm-12:05am during which MasterCards won't work, but that isn't applicable at 3:00 in the afternoon. I'm just really at a loss as to why foreign cards were accepted fine at these ATMs several days ago, but not accepted today. Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

As you were able to withdraw cash, I would guess that the problem is with your bank. Can't speak for the US but in the UK I often hear about bank automated anti-fraud mechanisms kicking in even though people notified their bank in advance of their trip - contact your bank.

For others going to Japan - it is more cash based than the US or Europe, ATMs that work with foreign cards are not that common. see info under General Money here http://inblighty.com/country/advice.php?…

Can i do job in japan with cultural visa?

Question:

Answer:

Too much info for me to wade through, but I tried. Sounds like 'no' if I had to guess.

Google "Japanese cultural visa" and you'll get all the info you need.

In closing down the links, I did find the following.....

If you wish to work while on a cultural visa, you must apply for a work permit through the Japanese Immigration Bureau. A work permit is not the same as a working visa because your primary purpose for being in Japan is to study culture; working is secondary. For this reason, cultural visa holders are permitted to work only twenty hours per week, but many exceed this number off the record.

What's the difference between 止まる and 止める?

Question:

What's the difference between 止まる and 止める? I wrote an explanation but i'm not sure.?
I know in japanese a verb has two forms. But because i'm learning japanese by myself, sometimes is hard to learn new things. But here is an explanation about what I think is the difference (based on the articles I've read for example in Yahoo 知恵袋).

The difference between tomaru and tomeru is that one indicates that the action is done by the speaker and the other indicates that the action takes place out of the speaker's will. For example.

"I stopped when i heard the cat cry" "猫の鳴き声を聞いた時止めたよ。===> In this case the action is done by the speaker.
"She stopped the car only using her hands" (彼女は)手が使うだけで車を止まった。=== Here the action is not done by the speaker and does not involve de speaker neither.

Others examples:
"let's gather 'round" "集めよう!"
"she gathered all the fruits fallen from the tree " (彼女が)木に落とされた果物を集まった" [I know that 拾う works better here)

"I decided to take the last train to arrive late to your house"
君の家に遅く着くために終発に乗ることが決めた。
"It has been decided that Tanaka will be hospitalized because of the state of his illness"
田中さんの病気の具合によって入院することが決まりました。

Am i right??? Or is there something i need to brush up about my understanding?

Posdate: Sorry if my japanese sentences arent understandable just guide your self from the english translation ^_^. Is really hard for me to study by myself so most of the time i'm not sure about my sentences.

Answer:

止まる is intransitive (自動詞) and 止める is transitive (他動詞). It's kind of hard to understand in English since we only have 3 transitive-intransitive pairs:
raise and rise
fell and fall
lay and lie

Raise your hand. (transitive)
The elevator is rising. (intransitive)

They felled the tree. (transitive)
I am falling. (intransitive)

She lays down to sleep. (transitive)
The book is lying there. (intransitive)

Notice that intransitive verbs can be used with "I"; this is because nothing is causing "me" to fall. So, if a verb is transitive it needs something to cause it to happen (direct object), whether it be the speaker or someone else, and an intransitive verb occurs on its own.

猫がいたから車を止めた。 Because there was a cat I stopped the car.
猫がいたから車が止まった。 Because there was a cat the car stopped. (This doesn't necessarily mean no one made the car stop, it just means that there is no direct object to stop the car in this sentence.)

Note also that transitive verbs use を but (most) intransitive verbs use が (some exceptions do exist, like 通る).

Other examples:
手を上げています。 I'm raising my hand.
エレベータが上がっています。 The elevator is rising.

ごみを出した。 I took out the trash.
日が出た。 The sun came out.

電気を消します。 Turn off the lights.
電気が消えます。 The lights turn off (on their own).

Who are friendlier: Japanese people or Korean people?

Question:

Who are friendlier, Japanese people or Korean people?

By the way, I'm aware that there are good people and bad people in every country, but i do believe that certain countries have generally friendlier people than others.

Thanks in advance for answering my question (if indeed you do answer my question and are not rude).

Answer:

You state that you know that good and bad people are in every country but then qualify it, without proof or reason, that certain countries are friendlier than others? I think you should leave it at the first part of your statement.

Now, if you want to know which country has the most aggressive and rude middle-aged ladies who will elbow you out of the way just to go through a door first, Korea wins hands down. If that counts as a friendly-factor, then I guess Japanese are friendlier.

Good places that meet this criteria?

Question:

I have 4000$ to move with and am unemployed. I have suffered long term unemployment and am seeking a place that has good transit and easy walking access to places where I can find a job. I am basically looking for a place where I could hop on the bus and just go job hunting. I am also looking for a place that has affordable prices on things like gas.

I am trying to plan this so that I can just go scout out a city/town to see where good spots are and what areas have good places to work. I am searching for a customer service job or something simple that I would not just get turned away from.

Basically I need some ideas for places that measure up to this, because google is both unreliable and a pain to find good info on about this subject.

I am wanting somewhere north, but to make this simple: Best chance to find resources, customer service, and good transit.

Answer:

There are many good places that meet your criteria, but unfortunately, Japan is not one of them.

Who is this one Japanese (male) singer?

Question:

He looked about 14 - 16 and had a very sweet, boyish face. He was very feminine and could be mistaken to be a girl in some, if I remember correctly. He had a beautiful voice, and I think he was wearing a large coat in one of his PVs. I think there was either snow or rain in it. He wasn't in a band or anything. Sorry this is so vague, but this is all I know. Thanks!

Answer:

oki all japanese people look alot younger than they really are. like my school's japanese exchange student was confused about how older looking the students were and how tall they were, she said that they all looked like people in their 40's. so roughly 40 year old japanese= 17 year old any other ethnicity. maybe it was Gackt Camui? he seems to be really popular. he's like 42 btw. and he still looks rather young. but then again, that PV you were watching could have been from a long time ago. so that person in it maybe older now than you think they are. please be more specific, like post the video or a picture.

Where can u Get Japanese Beyblades at these cities?

Question:

Answer:

Wrong section. You'll have a better response if you asked this in the Anime section or something.

I want to go in Tokyo in the near future...1-2 years...?

Question:

Where can I find DVD anime that are just ready from companies?
Original DVD...not modified anyhow like....when you add sugar at creams and someone add salt....
this way i feel when i see a modified anime/game without steam at bath scenes , kittens or other uninvited co incidents like those on characters and without other idiocy adds at games...just normal and mods
so tell me some shopping addresses??
REMEMBER...a cake with salted cream is good for those who modifies original(blessed) Japanese Creations...my opinion :D

Answer:

If I understand you right, all such videos are censored that you buy in a store. You'd have better luck finding them here in the US. DVDs made for the Japanese market won't play on American DVD players, as the US is region one, and Japan is region two.
Without knowing a Japanese person, you aren't likely to find these videos as they're not legal to sell in the open.

Need Suggestions for Animes/Dramas?

Going to japan to get a spousal visa?

Question:

I have been wanting to move to Japan since 2008, finally I have enough money that I have scraped up doing various jobs and I am ready to move! I also have a high school diploma and 5 years of work experience under my belt. The problem is, it is very hard( but possible, as confirmed by the japanese embassy here in the USA) to get a job in Japan with no degree. However, I can look for work if I have a spousal visa. What my question is and what I need to do is how is the easiest way to find a woman in Japan who will marry me? What are some tips if you have done this before? That is the main thing I need tips, tips tips.

PS please know BS about the morality of this. I have always planned on marrying a Japanese woman even before I found out it would let me get a visa. Please ONLY respond if you are going to give me advice or tips.

Answer:

Ok, no BS....The chances of this happening are just about zero to none at all. Most Japanese women want a man that can support them. An American with only a high school education is going to be hard pressed to find work in Japan, even with a Japanese wife. Unless you have a special skill a Japanese doesn't have, work isn't going to happen. If a Japanese can do the job, they will always be hired first. The only jobs we can get are those that a Japanese can't or won't do.
Sorry, I can't give you the answer you wanted to hear. But I gave you the truth.
Want easy ? Try Thailand or China.

Cultural Division in Japan? Quick, easy ten points!?

Question:

First of all, what does cultural division really even mean? Second, I am looking for all the possible info on cultural division in Japan that you can give me. Whether it be links, your own answer (which I prefer most), or some other kind of reference, I don't really care. This is NOT for homework, so please do not tell me to do my own work or anything. I'm simply just curious! Also, please don't tell me to google it. I tried that first, and wasn't satisfied with any of the answers I found given there. Thanks ahead of time; I appreciate all the help I can get, and best answer gets ten points!!=)

Answer:

We don't have any word like that. So it's not possible to answer what it means. Japanese people do not use the word cultural division.

I don't know who told you that. But I'm sure it's not one of Japanese people.

Is Japan safe for a single female traveller?

Question:

I am going to Japan in January and I will be travelling by myself. Is Japan female friendly country or do I need to be slightly aware like on mainland Asia or South America? I heard Japan is quite safe but I don't know any girl who would travel around by herself. How are female travelers treated in Japan?

Answer:

Japan is an amazing country but as with absolutely anywhere in the world there are still dodgy people about. Act sensibly and always be careful - I work for an airline and travel the world and often go out by myself. A few years ago a colleague of mine went travelling to Japan, took silly risks trusting somebody and ended up horrifically murdered - head severed! Google it if you think I'm exaggerating! But please don't take that as Japan being a dangerous place - I love it there. Just never be too trusting anywhere with anyone and maybe things like if you're in a bar don't ever leave your drink whilst going off to the toilet - nowadays these different 'date rape' drugs are prevalent anywhere. I hope you have an amazing time and meet some fantastic people. Please take care and enjoy it x

Help, how do you say "where do you want to go?" in Japanese?

Question:

I'm not sure how to ask people what the want to do? like what are their wants and desires. i want to ask my friend "which university do you want to go to?" can you also help me with that? thank you.

Answer:

I would say:
"where do you want to go?"
→ どこか行きたいところある?(let people give more options than asking どこに行きたい?)
"which university do you want to go to?"
→ どの大学に行きたいと思っている? hope/wish
→ どの大学めざしているの? target

-------- if you want them to be more polite;
- どこか行きたいところはありますか?
- どの大学に行きたいと思っていますか?

How can I purchase something from the japanese amazon.com?

How can I make my Japanese friend less formal around me?

Question:

He's always saying sumimasen and stuff. I want him to be more confortable around me. (Its a friend on twitter btw, not in real life)

How to say 'Please dont be formal around me becase I'm your friend'
lol something like that.

Is it ok to say this or does he want me to be formal to him?

Answer:

"saying sumimasen frequently" could possibly be one of his habits and he might not really mean "I'm sorry", so if you said,
"Please don't be formal around me becase I'm your friend' (= "tomodachi nandakara sonnani foomaru ni shinaku-temo ii yo"), he would say "sumimasen!" AGAIN...
So why don't you say, "Hey, I don't want you to say sumimasen to me so often... because I'm your friend." (= sonnani 'sumimasen' tte ayamaranaide! tomodachi nandakara.)

Good Japanese dramas with a girl as the main character?

Question:

What are some good Japanese dramas with a girl as the main character? The longest the list the better :p also please recommend dramas with HAPPY endings :D. (((10 pt best answer))) thank you :))

Answer:

Atashinchi no Danshi
Attention Please
BOSS (technically the lead's a female but since it's a comedic crime drama it might not be what you're looking for, though it does have a happy ending)
Gokusen
Hana Kimi (aka Hanazakari no Kimitachi e)
Hana Yori Dango
Kimi wa Petto
LIAR GAME (it's a kind of complicated show, with a kind of happy end...)
Nobuta wo Produce (the main character is actually a male but the whole point of the show is to transform the girl so she's essentially the main character)
Nodame Cantabile
Ohitorisama
Sapuri
Vampire Host (very stupid and fun)
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (kind of like Nobuta, the girl both is and isn't the main character)

Movies
Love*Com
Instant Numa
Kamikaze Girls (aka Shimotsuma Monogatari)
Linda, Linda, Linda (four female leads)
Tenshi no Koi (it's kind of sad at some points but the end is happy)
Yamagata Scream (a purposely funny "horror" movie)

Japanese honorifics for Naruto?

Question:

I'm writing a fanfic and was wondering what one of my characters (Yuki; middle twenties; doctor) could call Naruto. She doesn't like him AT ALL and I recently found a honorific--yōgisha (Naruto-yōgisha)--and was wondering if I could use that. If not, what could I?

Answer:

-yōgisha is an honorific used when referring to a criminal or the accused, so it wouldn't really be appropriate in this setting. I have listed a couple of honorifics below that will work for your situation:

-chan~using this honorific outside of addressing young children, close friends, women, etc. can be taken as rude and condescending

-baka-Many characters in Naruto often refer to him as -baka, meaning "idiot,""fool,"or"stupid"

Hope these helped and happy writing!

Which city/prefecture is cheap for living in Japan?

Question:

I want to settle in Japan but I heard that Tokyo is an expensive place to live.
So I want to know which city/prefecture is cheap for living?

Answer:

How are you going to "settle in Japan " ? You need a visa to stay more than 90 days. That means you need a good paying job. To get the job you need a four year degree and a job offer before you get there. Your job is going to be an issue as to where you will live.
I've been told there are some lower rents in Hokkaido. Finding work there though, isn't going to be easy.

What are the common ice-breakers and ways to start a conversation with a Japanese person?

Question:

I mean like in England there is this "It's a nice weather today, huh" (the kind of elderly neighbors talk to each other). What are ways to start a conversation with someone in Japanese? Yes, I would like to know Japanese ice-breaker phrases that help in casual conversations. The more you write the better. (Not meant to use only with the elderly neighbors).

Answer:

To be honest, I've only been in japan a total of 6weeks, but it seems it's the same situation in Japan as in England, with discussing the weather with elder people (kyou ii otenki desu ne). Whereas you wouldn't really talk to someone younger than that without due cause. Usually, the things that unite English people is complaining about late transport (not likely in Japan) and occasionally exchanging worried/amused glances when something odd happens on a train (likely to be ignored or internally registered in Japan, right?)

You might start a conversation in a small store that isn't busy (ie. not a chain/department store). You might comment on something that is easily observable to someone nearby that seems approachable (ie. on a train/bus/plane/boat or a large crowd) so, you might mention that there are a lot of people on the train/street/etc. (hito ga ooi desu ne/ sugoi hito desu ne).

When I was in Japan, it seemed a lot of people were interested in talking to me. Japanese people tended to initiate the conversation, asking where I was from, why I was in Japan, where had I been, etc. One woman just said 'it's cute' to me and when I replied in english she phoned up her sister saying she was better at english! haha. Another time I noticed some people performing in the street so I watched from the other side of the road. They noticed and invited me over.

From my limited experience, I would say just wondering around aimlessly like a gormless idiot is the best way to start conversations, but that's not very good advice...

Dating: do men show the initiative first or do they expect females to do it or does it depend on person?

Answer:

If a (Japanese) man says, "I've been too busy and can't find enough time for you", most of the time it's an excuse. Because if he's serious about you, he makes time for you.
That's what my ex Japanese boyfriend told me a long time ago....

What's the difference between "shiteirundesuka" and "shiteimasuka"?

Question:

空いた時間に日本語を勉強しているんですか?

Why not shiteimasuka? What does that "-run-" mean?

Answer:

いるis the dictionary from of います and is the form used for this sentence ending pattern
so いるんis the shortened form of いるの
のis adding emphasis to the clause with the impression of meaning 'for the purpose of/the expectation is that'

so I think the difference between the sentences would be:
していますか-are you studying japanese in your spare time?
しているんですか-so you are studying japanese in your spare time?

Perhaps the latter emphasises that this is a conclusion made from prior information they have received
