The vast majority of scientists and researchers will tell you that this is in NO WAY close to what happened in Chernobyl. I'm sure these people have more credentials then your history teacher.
Has there been a partial meltdown? Yes. Is the situation serious? Yes.
However, is the situation worse then it was last week or two weeks ago? No.
Everyday steps are taken to get the situation resolved. The treat of the whole thing exploding out of control is very small at this point.
It is still a very serious situation of course, but no way on the scale or seriousness of Chernobyl.
For the most part, the vast majority of Japan is safe right now.

You won't find them for cheap in any stores in America. New albums are really expensive in Japan, so in America the stores need to hike the price even further. You're looking at about $50 per album in America. I doubt there are many stores in America who sell used Japanese CDs.
Used CDs in Japan are fairly reasonable, though.
eBay is likely your best/cheapest option for both new and used CDs, though sometimes the CDs being sold on eBay are cheap copies from Hong Kong/etc. Be careful.

It's already affecting those 2 industries much. Many hotels, ryokans, and other entertainment and travel industry businesses have had much fewer customers since the earthquake.
Partly it's because foreign tourists have stopped visiting Japan out of radiation fear. Even Japanese tourist can't travel due to various reasons like gasoline shortage, suspended transportation, etc.
I think many of them will go out of business by the end of this year.

Perhaps this idea will seem inappropriate given the cause, but it's a tried and true method for raising money for schools.
Another idea is to auction yourselves off to people for a a day of whatever you can offer. We did this at my elementary school once. It would be announced what each person could provide for a day (cleaning, mowing the lawn, etc.) and various parents would bid.
You might also consider some sort of raffle. Sell each raffle ticket at about $10, sell around 1,000 tickets and have a prize or gift certificate worth about $2,500. This way people will be interested in the prize (thus purchasing a/multiple raffle tickets) and you will still raise around $7,500.

-chan is a term of endearment for girls. You might use it for a small girl or a close female friend. -Kun is used for boys. It can be used in the same way as -chan, however I noticed that the teachers at the school where I worked (a junior high school) often addressed the boys as -kun and the girls as -san, so I don't think there is a direct correlation between -chan and -kun. -San is a general honorific and is roughly (but not quite) equivalent to Mr./Mrs/Ms./Miss. You would use it for anyone you don't know well, someone you respect, and the like. -Sama isn't used very much these days, though you might hear it in phrases like "okyakusama" ("honorable customer") and is similar to -san but more formal and respectful. When in doubt you should probably default to -san, not -sama.

You can't switch from a student to work visa or tourist visa (if you have one) to work visa whilst in Japan. You have to finish your studies and then if you get a work offer, apply for a work visa with the help of the sponsor company. That is of course assuming you can find a job in the first place

Kanagawa (south of Tokyo) was virtually unaffected by the Earthquake/Tsunami.
Unaffected in the sense that nothing was destroyed.
The only affects are that there are many factories in Kanagawa that need to be closed because parts from the northeast Japan are not coming in. There are also various rolling blackouts in Kanagawa depending on your location in Kanagawa. Many major train lines are operating (depending on which parts of Yokohama), the Yokohama subway is running fine, and the major JR lines through Yokohama are operating as well
