Why do most Japanese employers for native English teachers not cover airfare nor rent?

Question:

I worked in Korea for 3 years, and over there they provided me a descent place to live, rent free. I had to pay utilities and the place was furnished. They even covered 100% of my airfare from Toronto. On my first contract with them I even got US$300 for settlement allowance, I also had a pension.

In Taiwan I never received any settlement allowance. On my first contract in Taiwan I got 100% coverange of my airfare to Toronto, but I only received subsidy for rent, they never provided me a place to live. On my second contract here in Taiwan finishing on June 30, I only have a partial coverage of my airfare and for rent it's the same, just subsidy, I got no pension here in Taiwan. All my contracts in Korea and Taiwan were for teaching English in public schools.

Now I am going to Japan to teach starting August 31. (I will also be teacing in a public school). In Japan, I will NOT have any subsidy nor reimbursement for my airfare from Toronto, and I have to pay 100% of the monthly rent (Except for August 2012). I will be paying utilities and 10% of my income for taxes, but pensions I don't know.

In China, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the gulf states they will either subsidize or cover yout airfare and rent 100%. Why do the Japanese employers not do that for native English teachers?

One More Thing: At least I will save money in Japan because I won't need to buy my own vehicle there as I did here in Taiwan.

Answer:

Japan's market for English teachers is more matured than the other Asian nations, I guess.
And recently online English schools have emerged as a new competitor in Japan, which provide English lessons at much cheaper price, so that more Japanese English learners are moving from a conventional English conversation school to the online schools.
As a result, employers are inevitably tightening their spending on the employee's salaries.
I think that's a reason why most Japanese employers are not willing to cover your claim.

Who wants to move to Japan with me?

Question:

Please leave your email add or PM me through Yahoo!
You must have a college degree and willing to teach English. I am planning to leave toward the end of 2011. I don't care if you are a male/female, where you live (pref. USA), and your age/ethnicity does not matter. I just want someone to fly there with me and start working at the same school (for mutual support).

I am desperate for adventure.
All of my friends either don't have degrees or don't want to move abroad, or don't want to have a life full of fun and adventure.
:(

Answer:

I have spent 5 years of my life as a teacher by profession working overseas. I worked in Korea for 3 years, and Taiwan for 2. My contract here in Taiwan will be finished on June 30. And guess what? I am finally going to teach in Japan!

I will not give you my personal information, but I will tell you that it is better for you to go it alone with assistance from people who can help you because when you go it alone, it makes you stronger and you are more likely to make new friends that way.

And yes, I have been to Japan, it is the most priciest country in Asia. Furthermore if your friends in the USA are not into adventure and travelling like I am, they will no longer be your real friends, especially if they are patriotically arrogant. Not to mention how the media in the USA has scaremongered them from travelling around the world.

I know because I am actually Canadian and there are people even in my country who have never left Canada nor stepped on board a plane.(Flying is safer than driving a car). And there are people in Canada who are just as patriotically arrogant as Americans. (Especially after these hooligans trashed the city of Vancouver after the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup victory).

So my advice to you is to do what even Jesus Christ once said, Go Ye there into all the world.

BTW, while you are in Japan, take a trip during your long break to Thailand.

Its best to think of these as separate categories and focus on each specific category as these require different methods and techniques. Start by learning the basics through grammar.

Would it be hard to be stationed in Japan for my first-duty station?

Question:

Would it be hard to be stationed in Japan for my first-duty station?
I am 89D- EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) , I want to be stationed in Japan or Korea. What are the chances i would be stationed in Japan or Korea? And what would life be like for a SINGLE soldier in Japan, Korea, or Germany? (Sex Life) ;)

Answer:

Unless you have a special skill they need. chances aren't good. You have a much better chance of being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. That's where they have a problem with bombs.
If you have the money, you can get sex anywhere. And Japan isn't cheap when it comes to cheap sex. You'd have better luck in Germany.

What part of japan is party district?

Question:

basically im doing research on party city's all over the world and i know tokyo is one in japan but can anyone help tell me what party of Tokyo Japan it is? thank you

Answer:

Roppongi in Tokyo.
Shinsaibashi in Osaka.

And don't knock what the first poster suggested. You could find out about both the places I have provided using Google. The advantage is that you would have learned a LOT more about each individual place. Sometimes when people get up off their butts and do a little research it turns out more profitable for them than just asking someone else to do it for them.

Can you read this to make sure it is proper grammer in Japanaese?

Question:

I'm trying to say as an intro. "Hello, My name is Aria Hoshimi. How are you?" and this is a intro (as in the first time talking to a person)
" Hajimematsute, watashi no namae wa Yueshima Raiden desu. O genki desu ka?"

Then I'm trying to say, "What? I don't know english.Do you know japanese?"

It's "Hajimemashite."
Wakarimasen means 'I do not understand.' So it shouldn't have a question mark. You probably want to say 'Wakarimasen...'

Who should I cosplay?

Question:

I'm a teen girl and I love cosplaying, but I don't know who to do... I'd rather not have to buy a full costume. Who should I cosplay?

Answer:

Full costumes are really expensive, and if that's an issue, go for characters who dress casually with one or two defining features. All the characters from Loveless dress casually, and depending on who you pick, you'll need just cat ears and a cat tail. Skip Beat is another one. Immortal Rain, the girl in it has a mod. simple outfit you could probably make. The characters from Black Cat and Rosario+Vampire are good as well. Deathnote characters have simple casual clothes. Cosplay isn't cheap, believe me, I know, but if you're creative and thrifty there are a lot of outfits that aren't really that difficult to make from other clothes. So, just keep an eye out for characters who wear casual clothes and look for things like that a mall or thrift store. I hope I helped!

Modern Japanese youth?

Question:

say living in cities like Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Sendai, Nagoya, etc. (not huge as Tokyo, but still large)
ages - high school to college age, both boys and girls (age 16-24)

How are they different in attitudes or views from say, American or Australian youth?
Is there some traditional aspects that remain that are quite different? Any mistakes one would want to avoid making?

For example, openness..can people just ask about the other person, being outgoing and friendly, and not be seen as prying, or are people more shy?
Do youth (ages 16-24) have any traditional aspects about them?
For example, do they bow to each other?
Do friends of the same gender give each other hugs?
Is it common for a girl and boy to be friends?
How is dating initiated among Japanese youth? Is there a lot of casual dating?
Do Japanese youth go over to each others houses often? (I know for college age, might not apply since they live in dorms) But would people be invited over?

Anything else I should note?
I would like to hear the opinions of Japanese teens and early 20's preferably :)

Answer:

I'm not a Japanese youth but here's a quick tip - time when you ask these questions, most of them would be online at night (but not this late, it's about 3:30am there). So you'd get more responses I think if you asked this at a different time.

Anyway, I have some Japanese youth friends. It's per individual in Japan as it is anywhere. I have a Japanese friend (18 years old) and he is EXTREMELY outgoing, he's huggy, he hates bowing, he isn't traditional at all, he has many female friends, he doesn't like dating, and he's often hanging out with friends and going over people's houses.

That being said, he tells me he's quite different from your typical Japanese youth. He claims that most Japanese try too hard to conform into something they're not, and there's little variety with people because they try so hard to be like one thing. This doesn't go for everyone, of course, and people these days ARE becoming more open and casual than their parents maybe were (and with that, allegedly less hard-working). So going by what he tells me (in general):

- Most of them are shy.
- They are trying to be less traditional to "break away" from their parents.
- They do bow, but it's more of a formal thing, I don't think most of them bow a terrible amount with their friends (he actually didn't talk much about this).
- Usually they do not hug, but it's becoming more acceptable than before.
- It's not as common for a boy and a girl to be just friends as it is in America, but again it's becoming far more common.
- ”すきです” - My friend thinks this is childish, but that's how dating is typically initiated in modern Japan. You tell a boy/girl you like them and hope they will date you.
- I believe they do go over their friends houses just as we do.

I'd just like to mention again that no matter what they are ALL still different, some behave this way and some do not.

Do they sell pads in japan?

Question:

ok, i cant use tampons yet, im 14 btw. im going to japan and i need to know if they sell pads there. thank you!

Answer:

Of course they do, they have women too! When you buy them at the store, they always brown-bag your feminine products so people can't see what you walk out of the store with...a nice feature, I think.

Specific markets that an International Business Consultant could get into if considering working with Japan?

Question:

I want to be an International Business Consultant. I'm an American and I want to work with Japan, (either for a Japanese company that wants to branch out to America or vice versa).

Do you have any suggestions for what specific markets Japan has? I understand there's a lot of things being made all across the board, but do you know what seems to be doing best now and what would be wise to invest in?

Thank you. If you need me to clarify my question further please let me know.

Answer:

I don't know what kind of consultant you want to become. But IFRS will be introduced to Japan in a few years. If you know this area, it would be good.

Do you think Japanese diet is really law calorie?

Question:

I watched Japanese cooking videos on YouTube where they make that okonomiyaki (I think) where they fry cabbage, egg, some beef, then add some noodles, mushrooms and fish flakes all in one dish!

Answer:

I assume by "law" you mean "low"?

It all depends. There are some really high-calorie Japanese foods. Portion control is what really sets the Japanese apart from..well, where I'm from, haha.

Traditional Japanese foods could be considered low-calorie because it was mostly vegetables. But rice is fairly high in calories itself - but it's good because it's energy!

So in conclusion, the Japanese diet has a wide range of high and low calorie foods, like nearly any other diet.

Whats it like to live in Japan?

Question:

Im Irish, I dont want to live there or anything (Cant imagine learning a language that complicated), only 15 at the moment, but Id really love to go there sometime in the future. Ive only ever been in ireland and England, otherwise just seen the world through the TV, so please give a good description!! (And dont go on about the economy, i dont care about that, i wanna know real stuff!!)

Answer:

OK. I just read the forst answer and that person is totally wrong - Japan is one of the cleanest places on earth.
Anyway, let's get the bad things out of the was first - earthquakes are common (although most of the time they're absolutely nothing). Also, Japanese people don't take as kindly to foreigners as you would expect. Well... actually, they're nice to your face, but if you go up to someone and as them where the station is... in English... then they're not gonna take a liking to you. They;re pretty obsessive with their culture, and they all act as one pretty big family.
But it really depends where you go. In tokyo, it's seriously modern (loads of really cool technology and entertainment), there is lots of places to go visit, and something is always happening. But if you go to Hokkaido, you'll be able to relax in loads of hot springs/spas, and visit a bunch of temples. I'm not sure about the Oosaka area... never been there.
All places are kickas, so I do reccomend you visit Japan! Tis so uber fun there! Just don't break the harmony, and you'll be welcomed fine.

Is it posible that a japanese exchange student likes me?

Question:

we met when he came to my school. and we really. Bonded even though we had a language barrier we would joke around and play around and we would tickle each other and play fight and we went on go carts together, played foosball, dance dance revolution, ice hockey, we took photobooth pictures, he sang for me, he teased me, we called each other names like, onara face & hentai and I would call him kawaii ichigo(cute strawberry) and we danced together to Mexican music LOL and we shopped together @ walmart & ate ice cream and did other things too, and
I wrote him a letter in Japanese before he left. And when He was about to leave I hugged him super tighty and I started crying really hard so his eyes got watery so he just got on the bus..... And they I made a heart shaped sign and he did it back......

It seems like a fairy tale.....
I email him sometimes now.
But I really fell in love.
The best week of my whole Life.

Answer:

OMG! This is cute!!!!!!!!!!! Owh, this remind me of my school time, except that he was Turkish instead of Japanese. LOL

BTW, when I was in school I had a big crush on Japanese star- Hideaki Takizawa! I was kept on thinking about him even during my final exam, and i saw his face in my mathematics question sheets!LOL
Some Japanese guys are pretty hard to resist though and they tend to be more sincere when it comes to feeling and stuffs. And they r such a gentleman & sensitive too! :)

Ok, as to answer to yr question...Well..I guess YA, he is hitting on you! Aww~ hahaha

And I know that some ppl just say that this is only a crush, and it will go no where.bla bla ..But you know what? To have a crush at yr age is one of the most wonderful life experience. Just savior it.

Having almost the same kind of experience to yours tells me that, I regretted the fact that I listened to so-called 'grown up'' negative advice. This is yr time, yr life. And, this kind of feeling makes u want to know and learn as much as possible about Japanese right?
U want to know their foods, their culture, their language, what they think, how their life and how they respond to typical situation like we all have to go trou etc.

In case things didnt work out, at least you can speak Japanese :)

All the best !! And keep writing!!
Love/Crush gives u hope :)

How can i find a girlfriend from usa europe canada japan?

Question:

Answer:

You can always tell the most serious of questions by examining the creation date of the YA account.

You need a new wallet, filled with a large quantity of large denomination bills, several high limit credit cards and a set of car keys that fit a $100K + car that takes you to one of several expensive houses located all over the world.

An alternate is to just go up to a woman you find attractive and be yourself.

Have you been to Japan? any recommendations? must see's?

Question:

Answer:

I used to live in Kyoto =]. Kyoto has a lot of great places to see! I really recommend going to Kiyomizu Dera (Kiyomize Temple) when the leaves are red at night (they will have special light-up nights in Fall). They give out sightseeing maps in the Kyoto Station if you want to know the great locations.

Tokyo Disneyland in Chiba is also a must xD It's practically the best Disneyland in the world.

Hiroshima has my highest recommendation! Miyajima (island) is very beautiful and fun. The atomic bomb memorial museum is also very good.. although somewhat depressing and scary.

The most important thing, of course, is to eat aaaall the good food~ Osaka has okonomiyaki, yakisoba and takoyaki (there's a takoyaki museum in Universal City, check it out!), Kyoto has delicious Udon (Tanuki Udon is my favorite), Tokyo has all sorts of food, Nagoya has many kinds of food to DIE for (tebasaki = chicken wings = amazing), etc. I suggest that you buy some biscuit snacks while you are there, most brands are very delicious and go great with tea. Watch out though, don't get sushi in non-coastal or average sushi restaurants (not so good).

Also, shopping! When you go to Kyoto, you should check out the basement shopping centre in front of Kyoto Station (train station). I think it's somewhat underrated. The one in front of Nagoya station also has good shoe stores that sell cheap.

You might think that these locations are all over the place, but it's really easy to travel to these locations! You can go to all of those on the Shinkansen bullet train. I recommend you getting a JR Pass, which let you board almost all JR public transportations. They're only available for foreigners (maybe just tourists, I'm not sure). They're quite worth it since Shinkansen tickets are expensive. Link: http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en001.h…
With JR, you might plot a route like Tokyo -> Chiba (Disneyland) -> Nagoya -> Kyoto -> Hiroshima.

This answer is quite all over the place, but I hope it helps! =]

What is the difference between Japanese citizenship and Japanese nationality?

Question:

Also how does this relate in terms of the residency registrations system and the koseki registration system? Can you be in the residency registration system if you are not a citizen?

Answer:

To be accurate, there is no difference between the 2 in Japan. Or we don't have "citizenship" concept here.

>Can you be in the residency registration system if you are not a citizen?

No. Only those who have citizenship/nationality would be in the registration.

Joining My Chemical Romance to help Japan?

Question:

I want to help Japan by kind of joining up with my chemical romance. My idea is to maybe charge people for a killjoy designed from a name they choose, and have all the profits go to Japan. How could I go about doing this? If this is even legal that is. Can anyone help me here?

Answer:

Yeah, you definitely need to get permission from the band and their label first. You need to contact them formally with regards to it, and it would be best to appear professional by already have a detailed project description (ie: what you want to do, what experience you have, how you plan on doing it, what would be required, any estimated costs etc). If you're in the industry or have previous charity experience they may take note. However, because you're having to ask this question on Yahoo Answers I'm guessing you don't have any experience in this. In this case making contact will be extremely difficult, and you'd really have to prove yourself and your potential. They may be happy to help and invest money in this kind of project, but whether they'd be comfortable doing so with someone with no experience is actually pretty unlikely. It would be seen as too high risk. Also, without proper experience or industry representation they may also just mistake you for some fan trying to get the bands attention and thus ignore you. By all means go ahead and try, but be aware of the road blocks ahead.

Good luck!
