Japanese shipping service?

Question:

Hi~~
So i want to buy some clothes but apparently the online site i wanna buy from in japan does not ship
outside of japan.
Why is this?
Moreover how do you find a safe reliable shipping service that does not cost and arm a leg and your firstborn child?
Thank!!!

Answer:

There are many third party services out there that will allow you to purchase something in Japan, then forward you the items.

There are many reasons why a Japanese company might not want to ship outside of Japan for a wide variety of reasons (customs fees, international taxes etc). There are many businesses in your home country I'm sure that do not ship outside either.

If there is an item you really want, you'll need to use a third party (middle person) to ship to you:
A couple of sites out there:

Are there oel manga in japan?

Question:

Answer:

OEL means Original English Language manga.

If you're asking if they are created there, then the answer would be no because this term is currently used to categorize manga that is produced outside of Japan.

If you're asking if any OEL manga produced in the US and sold in Japan, I know of at least one title (Svetlana Chmakova's Dramacon) that has been licensed and sold in other countries (including Japan.)

Hope this answers your question!

Can you give me your thoughts on Keio University?

Question:

I have a chance to do one-year exchange program in Keio University. I am confused because I heard getting by in this university could be very expensive. Can you tell me what you think about Keio and its image in Japan?

Answer:

It's one of the two best private universities in Japan. Probably the equivilant of a Yale, Princeton, or Stanford. Just being a student there has cache in Japan, let alone being a graduate from there. Even though you're not a regular student there, just being able to say you're a Keio student will open doors for you depending on what you plan to do there.

As for being expensive, it depends what you mean by "getting by". If you're going on an exchange program, most of your costs will be taken care of for you.

Tokyo or Osaka? Which one is better for one-year exchange?

Question:

I will be going to Japan on a university exchange program next year. In Tokyo, I can go to either Keio or Tokyo Gaikokugo Daigoku; in Osaka it will be Kansai Gaikokugo Daigaku. Money is important and I feel Keio can be a little too expensive for me. Can you give me some pros and cons about these two cities? Which do you think would be better and why?

Answer:

I think it's all up to you which one to choose. Osaka is cheaper than Tokyo. So I think it's better for you to choose Osaka if you like cheaper place.

When did the kiss develop in Japan?

Question:

I mean, I noticed they borrowed our English words "kiss" (ki-su) and "hug" (ha-gu)... but is kissing something they already did but didn't have a name for? Did they just change the names? Or is kissing something new to them...?

Answer:

Um.., we're all the same human beings.
We do have a word for that, and it's "接吻 seppun", but it's used mostly in novels. Or there were older wording "口吸い kuchi-sui" recorded in Heian period.
But I've never heard people saying "seppun (-suru/-shitai)" colloquially. It's because Japanese culture tends to avoid sexual expressions in public (even by words). English word "kiss" is said to be introduced in Japan late in Meiji period, and it became more common than "seppun" nowadays.

*Note: Japanese language uses many foreign words, not only "kisu"

Best ethnic meals to enjoy with Ukrainian vodka?

Question:

Among the best is Indian cousine, especially when you add Ukrainian pumpernickle bread. Chinese and Japanese dishes are mostly great meal to go with Ukrainian vodka, too. Especially, their pickled veggie salads. And, of course, the Ukrainian cousine itself is absolutely fantastic. Any other ethnic meals/cousines I missed?

Answer:

After reading your question, I pictured a platter of all kinds of juicy sausages surrounded by plates of good, homemade dark and light breads, all of them smelling fresh baked and with good crusts on them. A pot of thick, meaty stew would be good as would roasted rabbit or other game, including game birds. I love Asian food but a good Vodka should be paired with its gastronomical brothers and sisters.

Incidental / cash deposit to pay upon check-in to a hotel in Narita or Tokyo (Japan)?

Question:

I'd like to know the amount in cash if I did not bring along a credit card / and amount they will charge to my credit card if i use it. I'll be staying in a twin room for about 3 nights. Thanks in advance :)

Answer:

In Japan it would not be uncommon for people to pay with cash (more people use cash in Japan anyway), anyway, either credit or cash, all is usually paid upfront at check-in. There is generally no predeposit then the rest paid at check out, generally you just pay all at check-in.

What fun/exciting things are there to do in Tokyo?

Question:

I am going to Tokyo for a 4-6 day vacation with my girlfriend, is there anything special to do while im there? I have alredy looked into some of the atractions and i have alredy found the Sky Tree and the Rainbow Bridge. I would like to get a local's opinon or someone who has alredy been there so I don't just get all the well known sights, but also the not so well know.

Answer:

It`s best not to think of Tokyo as one city but as a collection of separate smaller cities all connected by rail as it makes it much easier to explore the city. Each of these smaller cities has its own distinct character and attraction.

The highlights of Tokyo include, The Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine; Asakusa district famous for Sensoji temple and Nakamise shopping street with cheap, antique kimonos, geisha bags and beautiful paper products, Sensoji temple, and the Kappabashi kitchen street for those plastic replicas of food seen in restaurant windows. Ueno for its park and museums, Akehabara for electronics, Shinjuku for its shopping with its huge Takashimaya department store and food hall, Tokyu Hands eight level craft store and Uniqlo store for really cheap, high quality, basic clothing, Harajuku for cheap shopping and Japanese street fashion, and Shiodome for entertainment.

Other places of interest include Shibuya for its famous intersection where the style tribes gather and Shibuya 109 the 10 level fashion emporium. Rappongi traditionally known for its nightclubs and bars, but now for its numerous upscale boutiques, smart cafes and Rappongi Hills with the 52 storey Mori building and Tokyo City View a walkway that wraps around the building offering 360 degree views stretching as far as Mt Fuji. Ginza for Matsuya department store and food hall.

How are the buildings in tokyo good for earthquakes?

Question:

I've heard that wooden buildings are better for earthquakes because they are more flexible, and stuff like that. But does anybody know what Japan has? and like are they prepared for a huge earthquake to come and destroy them and stuff???

Answer:

I believe Japan is the most advanced country in the study of earthquake (necessity is the mother of invention). A variety of anti-quake technologies are being applied to newly built buildings.

The skyscrapers in Shinjuku (Tokyo), for example, are designed to absorb the tremors rather than resist the underground vibrations. In other words, flexibility of the structure is more emphasized than conventional buildings that were built with the principle of "stability." In fact, the skyscrapers visibly swing with the tremors but never shake the buildings, which is logically far more effective for the protection of the high-rise structures.

At the time of Mar 11 quake, they literally swung from side to side even after the tremor was over (due to the law of inertia), but perfectly kept them safe.
You may want to watch this video shot at the time of the quake from the skyscrapers.

Americans living in Japan.?

Question:

I've always been so fond of the lifestyle in Japan. Now I was just curious and want to know is it easy living in Japan as an American? Also is it easy to make a good living out there? I wanted to know because I do plan on moving out there if it won't be a struggle.

Answer:

Not easy. You need a BA / BS degree to get a work visa. You also need a job offer before you get there. Most Americans teach English. And in most cases it's not a long term job.
You can't stay more than 90 days without a visa.
You need to have a job skill a Japanese doesn't have.

How much would a monthly pass for Suica card be in Tokyo?

Question:

I am moving to Tokyo to attend college for four years and I wonder if it would be in my best interest to buy a Suica card. I have heard that there is a monthly pass that you can pay a certain amount on and travel unlimited between certain stations. About how much would that cost per month and how many stations would be included?

Thanks.

Answer:

No. Not at all monthly charge for Suica card itself.
Suica card needs deposit \500 at first.
If it is not use, you can get pay back \500 returning Suica card to JR Station 'Mdori no Madoguchi'.

Monthly pass?
I think It may mean season ticket or rail pass for designated period.
There are three type of rail pass for one month, three months and six months.
It is same thing. At first you pay \500 to get Suica card which is written rail pass digital information to and use the Suica card as a rail pass.

You can use Suica card in every Tokyo Station (including, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama prefecture and so on).
If you buy rail pass for designated period, it can't issue rail pass which needs to change over three different railway company.

Should I live in Tokyo or Osaka?

Question:

I'm not exactly sure where I want to live. I mean I love cheap street foods, and I love getting drunk. I also love busy night life and beautiful women in diversity. I want to talk to many people, though my Japanese is pretty elementary, and English I don't mind. The Osaka dialect bothers me a little bit, and I'd rather learn standard Japanese, but this isn't a "major" issue. Music would probably be the biggest issue. I play a lot of rock music, and that seems to be dead in America if it isn't contemporary, and I'm not sure if Osaka or Tokyo would have a more genuine and less expensive scene. Also, the thing about Tokyo I "presume" is that it would be easier to get a roommate near the school I would be teaching. I'd love to live close to work. And Tokyo seems like the more likely choice for this, as more people live there. It seems as if the food sucks in Tokyo, but I'm not exactly sure. I love being active, walking, snowboarding, and just always being able to do something. Please help.

Answer:

During times like this i usually flip a coin and choose between heads or tails. It worked for me and it should work for you. Why not give it a try you can't go wrong
