When did the kiss develop in Japan?

Question:

I mean, I noticed they borrowed our English words "kiss" (ki-su) and "hug" (ha-gu)... but is kissing something they already did but didn't have a name for? Did they just change the names? Or is kissing something new to them...?

Answer:

Um.., we're all the same human beings.
We do have a word for that, and it's "接吻 seppun", but it's used mostly in novels. Or there were older wording "口吸い kuchi-sui" recorded in Heian period.
But I've never heard people saying "seppun (-suru/-shitai)" colloquially. It's because Japanese culture tends to avoid sexual expressions in public (even by words). English word "kiss" is said to be introduced in Japan late in Meiji period, and it became more common than "seppun" nowadays.
