You have to be born here to be a native American...Even the "Indians" here came from somewhere else at some point in time, many thousands of years ago some think. So in a way you could say the Ainu are somewhat like the "Native American Indians". They were in the north part of Hokkaido and also on some islands that are now a part of Russia.
It' not likely there's any ' pure ' Ainu left.
