Passport question please help?

what do you do if your passport gets lost or stolen while in japan

why are passports so valuable and need to be looked after on holidays

Answer:

Without passport, you cannot get out of your country.
Without passport, you cannot enter any foreign country.
Without passport, you cannot stay in any foreign country.

If you were US citizen and lost your passport in Japan, you should report it to the US Embassy in Japan IMMEDIATELY and ask them to issue a temporary passport.
Otherwise, you would be in a big trouble: 1) you would be regarded as an illegal alien; 2) you cannot get out of Japan, which means you would be thrown in jail for good unless you can legally prove who you are.
