Towns near Tokyo or Yokohama or other major Japanese cities?

Question:

I would like to get a teaching position in Japan (preferably with Interac, I'm thinking) within easy traveling distance to a major metropolitan city (for example, within an hour train ride), but without the sky high rent you can expect living in Tokyo or Yokohama. Would anyone have any recommendations of where in Japan the cost of living would be affordable, without being too rural?

Tokyo or Yokohama have huge bedtown areas around them. So you can choose any one of them as a place not so expensive and near Tokyo or Yokohama.
