What to get for my Japanese friend?

Question:

My coworker is transferring back to Japan. My coworkers and I have pooled a little money to buy a gift for him and his family. He is married and has three children under 10.
We were originally thinking backpacks or stuffed animals for the children, but are still unsure what to buy them and definitely unsure what to get him and his wife .... any ideas ? We don't want to get them something they can easily buy in Japan. Possibly something memorable about America?

Go with the food/drink idea. It's the right answer. If it's something local to you, and is perceived as
a luxury item, it will go over big. They are going to have to travel with whatever it is, another factor.
