How do they do crosswords in Japan?

Question:

Im not Japanese but they use loads of different characters and the language is complicated right ...? So how do they do crosswords? Do they just do Sudoku's instead?

Also ... In Spain ... they do crosswords in Spanish right? ... thats pretty cool

Answer:

Japanese crosswords are based on compound words or phrases, hiragana or katakana . Unlike western crosswords which uses letters of the word(s). For example, if you have Mount Fuji which is 3 characters 富 + 士 + 山, you can "cross" it with a town's name Kaneyama which is 金 + 山 + 町. The intersect would be the character 山 (yama).
