Why is Japanese team color blue?

Question:

I was watching Women's world cup and the Japanese team had on a blue uniform. Why is this? is there a specific reason? The Japanese flag only has red and white, and sakura is white or pink... maybe because Japan is an island and is surrounded by the sea? or is there another reason that they're sporting a blue uniform?

According to JFA site,JFA is not sure why.

However it is often said that "The blue symbolize the sea and the sky of Japan", these reasons were attached later.
