Question:

i am on holiday in tokyo now, been here for 2 weeks with my partner, but he is leaving in 2 days as he couldnt get as much time off work as me, i dont fly back home until the 23rd of november. i would love to see some of the country, i was thinking perhaps kyoto or nikko for about 5 days, i will be alone i am 20 and first time overseas so i am a bit nervous about heading to the country alone, where should i go, i will stay at backpackers and hope i will meet some english speakers.

Answer:

If you have a JR Railpass, then traveling by yourself is no problem whatsoever, and it is also fun.
I have been to Japan 7 times sofar, and always travel by myself.
Also, I have found that most Japanese now can speak a lot of English(although it might be broken, or they don't have confidence in using it).

Kyoto and Nikko are both very different from each other, and both are must-sees.
Nikko has the famous Toshogu Shrine, which is a must-see(be sure to arrive there early in the afternoon since it closes at 4:30pm).

Kyoto has Heian Jingu, SanJuuSanGenDo, Gion etc.

A trip to Japan is also not complete without visiting Yokohama(China Town), Miyajima, Nara, Kamakura, Himeji, Nagoya and so on.
