Why are japanese girls acting cute?

Question:

I cannot understand.
I find most japanese girls are always acting cute.(not cute at all, sometimes it is even disgusting;;)
who tought you?

Answer:

It is Japanese culture.

Small things and children have been cherished since old days in Japan.
Sei Shonagon(966-1025) who wrote Makurano Soushi, and in the book she wrote "All small things are pretty.". And children are especially cherished. Many toys have been in Japan.

In Japan, Barbie doll whose body looks gorgeous and with a perfect make-up didn't sell well and instead Rika-chan doll whose face is cute sold well. It is mainly because the place's culture.

Question:

Like guy on guy and girl on girl.

We as boys in Japanese schools did make lots of physical contacts with each other when we were goofing around. In my junior highschool, we had fun playing nonserious prowrestling matches. In my elementary school it was deemed kewl to touch your buddies' balls. But by the time we enter senior highschool, all of us found it more pleasuring to touch ourselves,

Which Japanese girl name sound the CUTEST?

Question:

Misaki
Kagome
Kanade
Yuna
Akira
Mizore
Haruhi
Nozomi
Nanami

Why did you choose what you choose?
Which name should i eliminate?

Answer:

Misaki and Haruhi are cute. Nanami is too, but not as cute as the other two. I would eliminate Akira, since I usually think of it as a male name first (e.g. like director Akira Kurosawa). It's true that Akira has masculine and feminine forms, as do many other names, but it's not one I think of as a cute girl's name.

Japanese writing styles question?

Question:

Hello, I'd like to ask a few questions about the various writing styles in Japanese

1. How many are there and what are they?
2. Can all words be included in these writings?
3. Why are they more then one writing types?
4. What's the difference between ALL of them?
5. What are the certain writing styles used for? Is one more formal than the other?
Thank You

Answer:

There are four Japanese Writing styles Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, and Ramaji.

Hiragana
The first writing system that is taught to young Japanese schoolchildren is hiragana. This system consists of about 46 symbols. Each symbol stands for a different phonetic sound, and all of the words are spelled phonetically. In Japan, they mainly use hiragana in school, manga (similar to comic books), newspapers, magazines, and video games. Hiragana is often put above kanji symbols in newspapers and magazines for those who cannot fluently read kanji. It’s also used to write words that there are no common kanji for.

Katakana
Katakana, like hiragana, consists of about 46 different symbols and is used to spell out words phonetically. However, it differs from hiragana in the fact that it is used only to spell out words foreign to the Japanese language. Examples of words that would be written in katakana would be foreign names or companies/businesses.

Kanji
This is the most difficult writing system that the Japanese have. There are 1,945 standardized symbols that one must memorize before being considered a fluent writer/reader of kanji.
Kanji is different from hiragana and katakana because every kanji symbol stands not for a sound, but for a specific object, word, or phrase. Some kanji are very simple to write, but other kanji are more complex. There are basic rules for writing kanji. For every kanji symbol, there is an assigned stroke number. The stroke number is important because it tells the writer how many times he/she should have to pick up their pencil while writing a symbol. Here are some basic kanji-writing rules:
1) Horizontal lines are always drawn before vertical.
2) Horizontal lines are drawn from left to right.
3) Vertical lines are drawn top to bottom.

Romaji
Romaji is the English, or Roman-derived alphabet, used to spell out Japanese words. There are different systems of Romaji.Romaji is often used in Japan on signs and notices for the sake of helping out foreigners/tourists.

EDITED

I study the Japanese language for the sake of one day becoming a fluent writer, reader, and speaker of Japanese/Nihongo (Japanese in Ramaji) / 日本語 (Japanese in Kanji)

Japanese keigo questions! I am so confused?

Question:

お休みに、先生がお書きになった絵をはいけんいたしました
おきゃくさま、おしゃしんをおとりいたします
There is 2 things I don’t get. First, how can you use humble and honorific in the same sentence? お休みに、先生がお書きになった絵をはいけんいたしました
Second thing, how do you know when to put お in front of a noun? Because in these sentences
お休みに、先生がお書きになった絵をはいけんいたしました
おきゃくさま、おしゃしんをおとりいたします
you put it in front of some but others you don’t. eg. You put it in front ofしゃしん but not in front of絵
I am so confused

Answer:

I can help you with the first part of your question.
You asked: "how can you use humble and honorific in the same sentence?"
If something (an action) refers to yourself you must use humble expressions. If the action refers to somebody else you must use a honorific expression.
For example: 先生がお書きになった絵をはいけんいたしました。
"O kaki ni natta" refers to "sensei", so you have to use the honorific expression. "Haiken shimashita" refers to yourself, so you must use the humble expression.

So, in the following sentences you must decide what refers to yourself and what refers to somebody else.
明日学校のきそくについて説明します
(Tomorrow, I will explain about the rules of the school.)
-> setsumei itashimasu.

夏、よくテレビでクリケットを見ます
-> haiken shimasu.

赤ワインを飲むのが好きだから、よくサウスオーストラリアに行きます
Aka wain wo itadaku no ga suki desu kara, yoku sausu oosutoraria ni mairimasu.

今日黄色いスカートをはいています.
-> haite orimasu.

How popular is Mixed Martial Arts in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

It use to be very popular in Japan airing the matches at the end of every year. It is popular still but I doubt the level of the strength of these fighters especially in a organization called Pride. Fedor Emelianenko was dominating a ring of Pride in Japan for quite a long time but once he fought in a UFC ring he started to lose severely. "Japanese new record but couldn't even pass the knock out stage of the world tournament".

How popular is Freestyle wrestling in Japan?

Question:

Is it taught in schools and universities?

Answer:

It isn't as popular as it used to be. My husband was a wrestler in high school in Japan and was offered a scholarship to a university, but nowadays that probably wouldn't happen. He was in high school 25 years ago or so.

Professional wrestling is much more popular, sad to say. There are some clubs around that teach Freestyle wrestling, but there aren't that many now.

If you work in a Japanese company...?

Question:

and you have in your contract that you are eligible for the twice a year "bonus" how much would you expect to get? Can anyone give me any advice or experiences?

Im a foreigner working for a Japanese company in Japan (but I am a seishain) and In my contract it says i will get the bonuses in summer and winter. I was just wondering how much I can expect to get. My monthly salary is pretty average, and I work for a social welfare foundation, if it matters.

Does it vary by company? Or is it based on performance?

I recently joined the company and would rather not ask :) Dont want my honne to appear like Im only after the money after all ...

Many thanks!

Answer:

Based on what I know, bonuses are based on its company's performance and not based on the performance of that particular individual. Usually bonuses for winter time is larger than summer bonuses. It is approximately twice to three times as much as the monthly salary. However, unlike the western society, Japan focuses on group effort and therefore individual's effort or performances are not highly valued. If the company is doing good as a whole, bonuses also rises and if it isn't, bonuses decline as well. My co-worker once stated that his friend's bonus was reduced to null due to this economic recession. Unlike the American company bonuses are for every one when the company is doing okay. However, if you are working for the Gaishi(foreign capital) Firm in Japan, system could be bit different and not everyone in a company receives bonuses. It is only for the top people.

Publishing companies?

Question:

I have 3 years of experience of working as an editor at a publishing company.
My Japanese is... upper-intermediate, I suppose.

Would it be possible to get a job at a manga-publishing company (be it magazines or volumes) in Japan for me? I'm just curious. I'm talking about the editor-in-chief position or anything mighty like that. I could start from the assistant.

Answer:

Jess - Good luck to you.

Anything is possible, I agree, but it is unlikely.

You could certainly get a job if you are already living here with your own visa (like permanent residence or spousal) but it is highly unlikely you will get a visa sponsored by a Japanese manga publishing house to come and live and work here.

Basically if a J-company wants to hire a foreigner and support their visa, they have to prove that no one else in Japan can do the job. Like a native english teacher. As there are thousands of people in Japan waiting for this kind of job, i think it would be probably quite unlikely.

BUT give it a shot! You never know eh! :D

What are the beds in old time Japan called?

Question:

You know. the pads on the floor. i need them for a story i am writing but i cant find the name! i need the technical name for them.. please will you help? thanks!

Answer:

They are called futon and are still very common today, although Western style beds have started becoming more popular. Futons are surprisingly comfortable and are great for small rooms because they just fold up and can be stored really easily.

Can someone find me japan's trading barrierrs?

Question:

Answer:

Regarding tariffs, compared to the past they are largely gone, with the exception of agricultural goods.
Japan still pampers its farmers, which have 4 times the voting power of the urbanite due to depopulation of the rural areas especially after WWII and no change in the law regarding representation.
Rice, wheat, dairy and sugar are some examples.
But for other goods there are many non-tariff barriers (NTBs) that keep foreign goods out. Some are cultural, others aren't. US cars have never made a dent in the Japanese market due to shoddy reputations, larger size, bigger engines (which get taxed more), etc. Penetrating the Japanese market is also hard because you need to speak the language of the customer, tailor products for Japanese consumer's tastes, get through the monstrously complicated distribution system, follow local content and ingredient laws, etc. It is tough, but it can be done as the many foreign products in Japan will attest. For other manufacturers though it is not worth the hassle, even if the Japanese market is sizable.

I want to take a trip to japan next month?

Question:

Is it safe to stay in Tokyo?
My stay is short and limited which places/cities Japan are a must see?

Answer:

You can go anywhere except within 20 km (about 12 miles) of Fukushima which is off limits as a precautionary measure. The "nuclear stuff" has been way over-hyped by the media and those who seemed to have learned about nuclear power from sci-fi B movies. You also won't want to go to Sendai because parts of that city were heavily damaged by the tsunami. Japan is about the size of California, so there are thousands of other places you can go: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara are popular destinations. If you like history, then Kyoto and Nara are must-sees. In addition there are many off-the-beaten-track places.

Why do Japanese people look the Least Asian?

Question:

Out of all the East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Korean Vietnamese, etc.) Japanese look the "Least Asian" - I mean they look the most "American". You know, they have large eyes with double eyelids (without surgery) just in general, their faces are a lot more sharper than other Asians. Unlike Chinese and Korean people, who mostly have squinty eyes, round, mushy faces, etc. So why is this? Why do Japanese look the most "white"? Are "100%" Japanese people actually part European or something? It's very curious cause Japan is just right next to Korea and they look different.

Answer:

Not all Japanese look alike, and not all Koreans and Chinese look alike either for that matter. There are some Japanese who don't have a double eyelid, and there are many Asians that don't have "squinty eyes, round, mushy faces". After years of meeting many people, there are some cases where it is now easy to see if a person is Korean or Chinese or Japanese by their face, but some cases where even the Japanese find the differences indistinguishable. Some Japanese have faces more like Han Chinese, others have a mouth more like Inuit. As to how 'white' they look, it really is a matter of opinion. Some do a bit, others clearly don't. If you ask a Cletus from the Oakies, he'd certainly say they don't look caucasian at all.

How to say "I live with..." in Japanese?

Question:

I live with my sister or I live with my friend

Answer:

quote:
"you can use 同居 doukyo or 同棲 dousei.

Eg.

watashi wa shukufu no toroko ni doukyo shiteimasu
私は叔父の所に同居しています。I live with my uncle [uncle's family]."

you mean tokoro right? not toroko

My japanese is not very good but how I would answer your question is...
姉/友達と一緒に住んでいます。
ane/tomodachi to isshoni sundeimasu.

姉(ane)-sister
友達(tomodachi)-friend
と(to)-particle to mark "sister" or friend. It means 'with' in english
一緒(isshoni)-together
住んでいます(sundeimasu)-live

Hope that helps. If anyone finds my answer unnatural or wrong, please point it out. I'm just another ordinary person trying to improve my Japanese >.>

Traveling in China and Japan for July and August - how's the weather?

Question:

I am pursuing an academic exchange to South Korea from March - June 2012. When the exam period ends on 15 June 2012, my family and I want to explore areas around China and Japan throughout the months of July and August. Is travel OK at this time? We are going to spend most of our time in Kyoto when in Japan, while China travel will be regulated to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi'an.

Answer:

July and August is the middle of summer so the weather will be very hot & humid. Summer is a good time in Japan because they are lots of festivals and you have the summer fireworks all over Japan.

What is your opinion on the leadership of prime minister ''naoto kan''after his fukushima mishandling ?

Question:

Answer:

Could be better, could be worse-Here's the thing, the culture of TEPCO was established under all the years of LDP goverments. Amakudari, bid-rigging, fake inspections, these were all practices tolerated/encouraged by the LDP that turned Fukushima #1 into a disaster in waiting. Thus the events at Fukushima #1 do not necessarily reflect upon Mr. Kan. There was no way to unmake an omlette in the short time that Mr. Kan has been in power in terms of the cozy relationships between regulators and regulated. It is not that I am such a big fan of the DPJ-it is just that the LDP just hasn't changed its stripes yet, and the voters of Japan tend to realize that. Therefore I expect Mr. Kan to remain PM for a while yet, and I do not understand why the LDP rejected his offer of a unity cabinet-if they have the best interests of Japan at heart. I have to concur with the other answer in terms of what exactly do you mean by mishandling? Crises management is just that-it's never going to be nice and neat.

Japanese honorifics for family?

Question:

I know that when your talking to family members you would usually address them with -chan. ie. kaachan, nichan etc.
But if you were telling someone "I have two sisters" or "I live with my Dad" Would you use -san, -chan or neither.
Also, when you saying a list of family members, ie, "I live with my parents and my brother." What form of 'and' would you use?

Answer:

1. No, you don't. The use of -chan is really not as common as anime makes it seem. -San is much more.
2. Neither because you don't use honorifics when referring to your family, only when speaking directly to them. Therefore, oneesan becomes ane, oniisan becomes anime, otousan becomes chichi, okaasan becomes haha.
3. To.

Why should we be sending money to the Japanese?

Question:

ww2 was only 65 years ago and we all know what they did during that so why are we giving them our hard earned

Answer:

That's because we care unlike you! Japan was also bombed by US. Ever heard about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? During hurricane Katrina Japan donated a lot of funds and helped out with disaster relief. It is one of the most generous countries and not just the US but they have also sent funds to developing and underdeveloped countries to help with improving their infrastructure. Also because we have been using their technology for a very long time. They have helped us so much and now it's our turn to help them :) Right now their economy is going down, they are struggling with radiation crisis and so many parts of Japan are without adequate food, power and water :( Imagine if your country was hit with such a crisis and people from different countries rather than sympathizing with you or help you out make jokes about it and scorn it :( How would you feel? Don't be so selfish and try to help! Nobody is asking you to give all your hard earned money! $10.00 is the minimum you donate to the Red cross. Is that you hard earned money? Every weekend you spend so much money on shopping, food entertainment etc. and you cannot even donate a bit to the Red Cross to help to make someone's life better? People like these make me sick to my stomach!
Do help Japan and let us all help in rebuilding Japan back to the beautiful country we know! :D

Heyyyy. I. M. Tony. In. Japan. Saitama?

Question:

Help. I. Am. Looking. Japnies. Woman. Any. Body

Answer:

What's your question?

Will japan be safe in 5 years (nuclear)?

Question:

Answer:

Japan is safe now. There is a 20 km (12 mile) radius around the plant that is off limits as a precaution, but the rest of Japan is fine (other than the areas damaged caused by the tsunami).

If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

And here is where you find current, factual status information:

If i were to go to japan....?

Question:

where would i go to be safe because of the nuclear stuff did the whole japan get hit or just a city plz help

Answer:

Most of Japan is safe and there is no need to worry about traveling to/around the country right now. The only thing, of course, is that you cannot travel within 20 km of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, but most of Japan's major cities are well outside of that ring. Also there may be a little inconveniences here and there as some areas are still conserving energy, but that should not stop you from making the trip. Japan is a wonderful country... I've been there twice and I plan to go again within the year. Besides, Japan can use the tourism dollars right now. :)

Asian boys (Japanese) Don't like black girls?

Question:

Asian boys (Japanese) Don't like black girls?
Alright for of all I am still young so I have my whole life ahead I know this and I am a very diverse person and I still always keep that door open for any individual who loves me for me but I am really interested in the Asian Culture mainly the Traditional Asian Culture Like Japanese History or The Geishas and I really respect the elderly and Traditonal Moral and Educational Vaules I am also open to other cultures at the same time but I wonder would am Asian Guy even like a Black girl like me.

I mean I hear all these negitive things like how Asians only like their own or White and How they do not Find Black girls Attractive Physically I think I mean I am s nerd Average looking I am descried to my friend's as Sweet, Down to Earth, Shy, Quiet and very Nice but something also happen last year this Asian boy(Chinese) that I used to like treated me badly and called me ugly because I wasn't an Asian Girl and I just thought about what his heart was like not his Looks but I just wonder since I would like to move to Japan one day.

And since the Asian culture likes light skin will any Asisb boy like me for me if I go there Will one Like me by the contents of my Heart and not the Color of My Skin Thank You,.

Answer:

I think you will find someone. Do you only like asian FOBS or do you also like asian american guys?

I ask cuz I am white (so not asian) and only date asian guys. I am 21...I am guessing you are younger than me...but I still consider myself rather young as I am a college student..

I know quite a few asian american guys (cute ones too!) who like black girls. I think the only obstacle you may come across if you date one of these guys is that they are more into "ghetto black" culture ^.^ So I guess maybe watch some weird movies or something to pls him haha. :P

I always mention stuff about me that has to do with non-asian cultures so they dont think im obsessed *mwa ha ha* so its basically the same thing I do ^.^

If you are into FOBS...or guys in asia...I am sure you will find one if u stay there long enough...

I think Japan would be your best bet though as...Chinese are rather racist...they love white people though >_< but I mean...they only really like White AMERICANS...they even have swear words for ppl from the south...and the north of china lol.

But...Chinese guys are very sweet to the girl they love...so if you want to find one, I would suggest maybe Hong Kong where there will be more modernized ppl. ^o^

But...Um...I think u should have no problem finding an asian american guy for sure...I think if u MOVE to Japan like you want...I am positive you will find guys though ^o^ Once they get to know you...I think they will love you!

I guess my answer is: dont worry too much. Dont let ppl like that Chinese douchebag get u down ^_____^ Cuz u sound like such a sweet girl and i bet u will find someone. It only takes one person in this world to change you...you only need one person in this world to love you! <3 BTW, u dont sound insecure, but reasonably wondering...so I disagree with the last person >:(

Take care!

Is ite beter to fly from LAX to Haneda airport in Tokyo, or Narita airport?

Question:

I've been reading Hotel reviews on Expedia for Hotels in the Shibuya/Shinjuku area of Tokyo and many were saying to fly into the Narita airport because you can either take the train or airport limousine bus to the hotels and you can only take taxis from Haneda airport. Is that true?

What are the advantages of flying into each? Going to visit in October and so I'm planning now but I'll need to be sure that getting around is not too expensive or far.

Answer:

You can take bus or train from Haneda. I think Haneda is better because it's closer to Tokyo center. But it does not make your trip so much different, no matter which airport you will land.

Answer:

Many Asian guys who grew up in an integrated society do not see color when it comes to choosing with whom they want to date (for example: NYC where I am).

However, Asian guys, whether American citizens or not, still prefer the traditional type of chick: soft-spoken, meek, neat, and gentle. At least that's what I've noticed.

One famous beautiful black woman is currently married to a Japanese guy. That would be Arthel Neville.

Staying in japan under 18?

Question:

Hey, i'm 15 and one of my friends has invited me to go over to japan with him. Thing is, i don't want to intrude on his grandma, so i was wondering if it would be legal to stay in a hotel alone, and without my parents. I would have their consent of course. Could they just give permission over the phone? Or what would have to happen? (Would probably be in tokyo, preferably in a budget hotel of some kind.

Answer:

Most (if not all) hotels won't allow youngsters to stay by themselves. Best to stay with your friend assuming you can get consent to travel

Are there any Japanese movies with English language?

Question:

I want to watch a Japanese or Asian movie with English language. Preferably romance.
Please help me out, thanks :)

Answer:

Do you mean English movies about Japan? Or Japanese movies dubbed in English?

"Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005) - (I'm sure everyone saw it)
"Lost in Translation" (2003) - Scarlett Johansson
"My Neighbor Totoro" (1988) - animation
"Spirited Away" (2001) - animation
"Howl's Moving Castle" (2004) - animation

To be honest, there are so many good Japanese movies but I can't think of them being dubbed or not (probably they are). However almost all of them have subtitles. It's worth watching with subtitles too, I think.

日本語の質問: 「よると」? "According to"?

Question:

How do you use 「よると」?
Does this make sense?
「意識調査によると、オーストラリアの学生の34%は学校が嫌いです。」
I want to say "According to the survey, 34% of Australian students think school is bad."

Answer:

The usage of よると is perfect. The whole sentence is perfect too. At the risk of offence, let me say, "Applause!".

Similarities & Differences in the Mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan & India?

Question:

I'm doing an practice DBQ for my AP world history class, but I need help analyzing similarities & differences in the mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan & India in the period from the 1800s to the 1930s.
Thanks. (:

Answer:

A big difference is that Japan is NOT a producer of cotton (an importer) while India has been a top (or the second) producer & exporter.
The period from 1800s to the 1930 seems pretty old... however, early in 1960s, my father had been involved in cotton-importing and he seems to have stayed in Australia for a couple of months to join in planting.

Things that are better about America that Japan doesn't have?

Question:

So my dad has been to Japan but i havent yet. he told me to look for some fun things about the U.S. first that japan doesnt have.i cant think of anything!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE!

Answer:

Good pizza. Cheap movies, and lots of them -- in ENGLISH (LOL). Fun reality TV like Ace of Cakes or those house-buying programs on HGTV. You can go to a shooting range and shoot a gun without a lot of hassle in the US. Travel is a lot cheaper in the US.

That said, there are tons of great things about Japan (sushi! karaoke boxes! fun cartoons! you can shoot arrows from horseback! Sorry, can't think of anything cheaper in Japan).

I think you really have to learn to appreciate where you are first. Then, when you go overseas, you can appreciate the real differentness of the place.

How many Japanese AV stars have died from unnatural causes and who were they?

Question:

I know of one who was pregnant doing a AV movie while pregnant and died of heart distress.

Many American AV stars die from murder, suicide, drugs, HIV etc what about Japan's?

Or is Japanese AV safer for its stars.....

Answer:

Momoi Nozomi was murdered. I think one of the big issues here is these people are in a milieu where shabu is used. Therefore better drug treatment or harm reduction programs would be helpful. It would be interesting to see who dies younger-pro wrestlers or porn stars?

What to expect in Niigata station? help!?

Question:

Hi, I plan to Niigata station through limited Inaho. From the platform, I must then locate Toyoko Inn which is near the Bandai East Exit. My worry is that, will there be direction in English just like those stations in Tokyo??

I'm really worried to the point that I want to cancel my trip but then I've invested so much money on this....

please help??

Answer:

No need to worry.

I think I recall seeing signs in English for both the exit and the inn (the inn is connected to the station so no need for a cab!) but if i am mistaken your other (and maybe better option) is to walk up to agent at the station (where you present your ticket as you exit the gate) and ask for them to point out where the Bandai East Exit (say something like: "sumimasen, bandai higashi deguchi doko deska?"). Whatever he says, repeat it to confirm and head in that direction

You could also ask whether the Toyoko Inn is close by (something like: "Toyoko Inn Niigata ekimae doko desuka?")

Use of 'Wa' in Japanese?

Question:

I know that 'Wa' is a topic marker, showing the topic of a sentence. Eg. Watashi wa Bob desu. But in all the examples I've seen the topic is always 'I'. I also know that the 'wa' can be left out is the topic is clear, but is it possible to have a topic which isn't I.
For example, 'You are late' Would you be a topic or a subject, and in what case could the topic be another noun or pronoun. Eg. 'Japan is great' Is Japan then a topic, not a subject.

Help is appreciated

Answer:

It's not so easy to read the question with no "?" marks.....

- "is it possible to have a topic which isn't 'I'?"
YES, for example, 'You are late' we often say "osokatta ne"
--> like when the subject kept his/her friend waiting. "anata osokattane" sounds like blaming.
Or a strict teacher would say "kimi chikoku da!" ('you' as a subject)

- in what case could the topic be another noun or pronoun?"
Eg. 'Japan is great' Is Japan then a topic, not a subject?
--> I would say 'Japan' is both a subject and a topic

note: we are taught that "the subject" in a sentence is always connected to a main verb.
Complicated enough, we also say "nihontte sugoi!" (Japan is great) without using "wa". But if you find this too confusing, pls just ignore this time.

Japanese sentence structure?

Question:

I've just began studying Japanese and what I've picking up so far is that the Japanese language appears to be 'missing' many words which in English, we would consider fundamental. Mainly the fact that they don't have words for is, it, a, the and plurals.
I know they have 'topic markers' and 'subject markers' and other particles like them, but I'm very confused by the sheer dissimilarity between Japanese and English.

For example, if you were to say, (and sorry I don't know where my Hiragana keyboard is??) that cat is cute. Would it be, sono neko ga kawaii, that cat cute?

Or I ran to school, (I don't have enough vocab to even attempt this) I school ran?

Or It was boring, would you just say 'Tsumaranai' because couldn't that also be it is boring?

Also Japanese people supposedly don't use pronouns such as I or you, once to topic of a conversation is established. But does that mean if half way through a conversation I wanted to say "Would you like to go shopping with me?" Would I end up saying 'would like go shopping???'
As you can see I am extremely confused and have a VERY limited (ie. non existent) vocabulary, and although I know both hiragana and katakana, I would probably find an answer easier to understand in just romaji.
Help would be really appreciated.

Answer:

japanese actually has an it is word which is desu pronounced des. my japanese is a bit rusty but i think your sentence would be something along the lines of sono neko kawaii desu

Travel Document when going to Japan?

Question:

i recently just booked flight ticket to Japan. My airlines company says this before i made my booking " For non-Japanese guests flying to Japan, please obtain your visa at the Japanese Embassy. You must possess all entry and exit visas, along with health and other required document. Your passport's validity must meet Japan's entry requirements"

i just wonder what travel document i should bring

Answer:

It really depends on where you are from and what passport you carry. To enter Japan you will need a valid passport and if your country has an agreement with Japan which includes most Western nations then you do not require a visa as you can obtain landing permission on arrival without a visa. This is usually good for a stay of up to 90 days, although certain European nationalities are permitted to stay for 180 days if they note a longer stay upon entry. In some cases you might also be asked to prove that you intend to return to your home country, which can be done via a return plane ticket. You are also required to complete an immigration card, which is usually handed out on the flight be landing and must be handed in at customs upon entry.

What are 3 reasons i can use for my letter to persude someone to donate money to the earthquake and in japan?

Question:

project for english class... persuation.

Answer:

Karma -- what goes around comes around. Japanese people have sent money, supplies and people to various disasters in the world. It's time to pay them back.

Building friendships -- the Japanese will remember the world's response for years. Most I've talked to are amazed and grateful.

The need goes on: although the damage is largely limited to a few prefectures, there are still thousands who are homeless, there are still piles of rubble waiting to be cleared.

Can a non Japanese teacher teach "reliable" Japanese?

Question:

I wanted to join a Japanese course in Delhi but all the Japanese teachers are Indians. I somewhat backed off because all those courses are somewhat expensive too. Do you think it's OK to study Japanese that is taught by non Japanese teachers? (The schools are looking for native Japanese teachers but no one is interested to take up this job).

Answer:

When I was studying Japanese in college, most of my professors were not native Japanese. This is to be expected if you're not in Japan (I'm in America). There's no problem learning Japanese from a non-native speaker unless you're studying conversation/pronunciation. Otherwise, you can study grammar, culture, kanji, literature, etc. without any problems.
At the school I attended, the third and fourth year conversation classes were taught by native Japanese speakers. But some of the classes taught by non-natives included: third year reading/writing, newspaper reading, intro to modern fiction, modern literature, Japanese culture, intro to classical Japanese, contrastive analysis.
In short, learning from non-natives should not be a problem unless you're trying to learn advanced conversation.

Is this correct usage of Japanese passive / causative / passive-causative?

Question:

I want to make sure my Japanese is correct before I hand it in, will you please just double-check these sentences? Thank you.

1. 百漢字を書けたばかりだから寝させられます。 ”Since I have just written 100 kanji, I am now able to go to sleep. (PC)

2.たまごを食べたからプールに泳がせませんでした。 ”I was not allowed to swim in the pool after I ate eggs." (C)

3・五十年後には本語を勉強したことがぺらぺら日本語を話しられます・ ”Aft… studying Japanese for 50 years I am able to speak fluent Japanese." (P)

Thanks!

Answer:

1. 漢字百文字を今書き終えたので、やっと寝られます。
られます seems like "passive" or "causative", but it's "be able to (ability?)"

2. たまごを食べたので、プールには入ることは許されません(<--edit ....ませんでした。)

It's direct translation of the original sentence, but it's more natural to say;
たまごを食べてしまったため、プールには入れません。(<--edit 入れませんでした。)

3. Studying Japanese for 50 years makes it possible to speak fluent Japanese.
五十年日本語を勉強すれば、日本語もぺらぺらになるでしょう。
While English often uses ”causative” with non-people as the subject, Japanese prefers not.

What should I expect on a trip to Japan?

Question:

I plan on taking a trip to Japan next summer or winter and I have A LOT of questions on things I should expect, costs and recommendations!

Now i plan to save at least $5,000 for the trip, I want to know if that will be enough? (it's only going to be me going.)
I would also like to know if I should go during the summer or winter? (Pros and cons)
Where should I go? I have no idea where I should visit, although I do know I want to go to a bathhouse!
What should I expect when I get there, for people who have been to Japan were there things you saw, people you met or anything that took you off guard?

Please feel free to add anything you think I may need to know as well!
Thank you!

Answer:

Are you going solo? then 5k is enough. I'm not really sure how much plane tickets will cost by then.
You'll have so much choices on where to visit. I personally would just recommend the Kansai region (Osaka-Kyoto-Nara-Kobe). It has bathhouses, ryokans and more traditional spots that you as a tourist will enjoy.
Tokyo is also great though, as it's Japan's icon and image.
Summer would be pretty very hot and sometimes rainy. I recommend autumn.

What websites do Japanese people use?

Question:

What social networking and video websites do people in Japan use? Do they use Facebook, or is there a Japanese alternative?

What video sharing websites do they use as well? Do they use YouTube or a Japanese website?

What other websites are popular? And which email service do they usually use? Here in the UK we usually use Hotmail or MSN. What about you guys?

Answer:

social networking: Mixi, Gree and Mobage town are the 3 most popular social networks in Japan. Foreign networks like Facebook are not popular. But Facebook alone is getting slightly popular.

Video: Youtube and Nico Nico Douga (Japanese site) are the 2 most popular video sites. I don't know which one is more popular. But NND is getting popular rapidly.

email: Hotmail and Yahoo are the 2 most popular ones. Both Japanese version, I mean.

Going to Niigata station?

Question:

My question is, how do you go from the Niigata civic center to the Niigata station? I mean, where and which bus to take perhaps? Help! Thank you!

Answer:

Better to tell us what "Niigata civic center" really is or where it is.

I can't find it on Japanese webs.

Addition:
OK. But local buses rarely have English statement.

This is their website and telling you which bus to take between Civic Center and Niigata station.
http://www.niigata-kenminkaikan.jp/acces…

If you can't read this, it would be difficult for you to actually find a bus stop there.

Addition2:
>Oh my God. then how should I return to Toyoko Inn (Near Niigata Station)?

Taxi.

Or walk to Hakusan station which is 1 station away from Niigata station. And take train to Niigata station.

Click 白山駅からの道順のご案内(GoogleMap) on the page and you can see the route to Hakusan station. They say it's 15 minutes by walking.

The reason why because my father who lives in japan is dying form throut cancer and i want him to see his grandchildren before he past always. i really need the information about the ticket as soon as possible. thank you so much.

I'm sorry but you really can't find flight information without a location. There are some flights out of LA or San Francisco for as low as $400. It doesn't depend on the airline, it depends on the place you are flying from and the time of year. You really should just do a kayak.com search.

Cost of living in Japan?

Question:

I am going to be staying at a friend's house for free and I will only be paying for food and travel. The only time I will stay in a hotel is when I visit cities quite so distance away from my friend's house for more than a day at a time. With this said how much would food and travel cost for 3 months?

Answer:

This depends on where you are going, how frugal you want to be, or if you want to splurge some. If you want to go across the country and back the JR Rail Pass would be good to have (need to get it before arriving in Japan).
See www.japanrailpass.net
Food can run you about USD$25 on up if you want to be tightfisted, or you can get food at a grocers and get something, but nothing too fancy. If you want to see a list of prices, try

What are some good program to teach english. . .?

Question:

. . .in Japan? I'm sad I didn't make it into Jet. But I'm over it. I'm wondering what would be the next best thing/program I could do in Japan.

Thank you!

Answer:

What kind of teaching are you looking at? In Japan you can work for an eikaiwa like NOVA, GEOS, ECC or AEON, for a private English School or as an ALT in a public/private school. I have worked in all three areas and highly recommend working as an ALT in a real Japanese school as it was the most rewarding experience for me. Most major language schools now operating recruitment offices overseas, so you can actually organise and set up an interview without having to be in Japan.

Most recruiters for teaching positions in Japan will require the following:

1. Native English Speaker
2. Full Bachelor Degree (in any field)
3. Basic Japanese Ability

They also prefer actual teaching experience and qualifications like ESL, CELTA or TEFL.

What types of jobs do people traditionally have in Japan?

Question:

Are there any jobs that aren't as common here, but they are in Japan?
And don't say "OMG people have the same jobs that people have here, it's not a different universe!" That's not very helpful.

Answer:

We can say geisha as one example.

Other jobs are like craftsmen of traditional Japanese sweets or products (like Japanese dolls).

How important is the intonation in Japanese?

Question:

I'm currently learning Japanese, and I have a pretty good foundation on the basics of the language. Now I'm kinda just going over those "small" steps that would make speaking the language sound a little more... correct! I want to have at least some idea of what the intonation should be like, but say I didn't follow the intonation rule. Is the intonation GREATLY significant? Or can you go without it? Though I want to get a firm grasp on it.

And also, if you're able, can you maybe give me a "summary" of the intonation? Or maybe give me a basic understanding? I know Wikipedia has a page on the intonation, but, idk. I like getting them from a persons own words. Lol.

Answer:

The intonation comes naturally , its the same as any language.

In casual Japanese questions are asked with a rising intonation. Just as you do with any word.

Its just like any language. You should be able to do it naturally.

Japanese special forces group?

Question:

Can americans go to japan get citizenship learn to read write and speak japanese and join the special forces group of japan or the 1st airborne brigade

Answer:

You usually need working or student visa to live in Japan.

For working visa, you have to get a job offer from a Japanese company. But you can't look for a job in Japan without a visa. So you need it before you enter Japan.

For student visa, you have to be admitted to a Japanese college. You need to pay tuition and living cost for 4 years. It could be about $80,000.

If you want to become a Japanese citizen, you have to keep living in Japan for more than 5 years without a pause. Then, you will be eligible to apply for citizenship. But you need more like stable income, sufficient reason, Japanese language skill and so on if you want your application to be accepted.

You can apply for Permanent Residence of Japan under the same condition. And this is relatively easier than citizenship.

Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea or Osaka Universal studios?

Question:

My friends and I aree traveling Japan this July and August and would love to go to one of this parks. None of us has ever been to any of those anywhere in the world. Which one is the best? We're all 21-22 y/o.

Answer:

It's all up to your needs.

I prefer Disneyland. And since Disneyland and Disney Sea are next to each other, you can visit both if you stay in Tokyo.

Not bowing in Japan...Good, bad, or okay?

Question:

I was wondering how rude it is to not bow to anyone in Japan. Is it okay or is it rude? Like, what if a Japanese person bowed when they met me and I didn't bow back?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:

It depends on each situation. It depends on when and where, whether you should bow or bow back.

For example, when you bought something at a store, they would bow to you. But you do not have to bow back as you are a customer.

If you visit Japanese as a tourist, there would be few opportunities where you have to bow. Bowing is used in formal relationships like business. So you do not have to care do much.

What's the best college in the western United States for learning Japanese?

Question:

I've found a lot of colleges in Oregon with majors and minors in Japanese, as well as good study abroad programs but I can't really decide which one. Willamette, UO, etc.

Answer:

None. Its sad to say that learning a language in school is the worst method. Its expensive and not worth for what you learn. You learn as much in 4 years as you do with a basic begging book. They teach you only polite language, and outdated terms.

What do you think the reasons behind the high suicide rate in Japan are?

Question:

Answer:

One reason is that the only time you can find a good job in Japan is at the time of college graduation (age 22). If you missed it, you would never have a good job again.

So most people are losing hope on life if you are over 22 and do not have a good job. There is no "2nd chance".

Another thing is, if you do not have a job in Japan, you (particularly men) would be treated like garbage. No wonder suicide rate is much higher among males.

Question to Japanophiles: How long did you have to wish to go to Japan before you went there?

Question:

I have wished to go to Japan for 13 years and never got a chance to go there. I started to want to go to Japan when I was a teenager but didn't get a chance as my parents are not into traveling and such. Now, Japan just seems to be not on the way (in my husband's way, lol). Will I never go there? Sorry, I know, this sounds weird.

Answer:

Keep saving money to go there! Who knows, in ten years when your life seems a little more stable, you might have the chance to go. Yet, remember, trips, in a way, are like children; there is never really a perfect time for them to come. I have wanted to go to for a year now, and one of my closest friend has wanted to go for four years.

Its so hard to find japanese penpals then dont seek to find interest in anybody and i m?

Question:

and i m desperated i have been trying months and i dont get never good roud to find a loyal and handsome penpal from japan
im 20 old girl

Answer:

Do U.S. Military traveling on leave need a passport to travel through japan?

Question:

I'm in the army and i'm flying back to the states for leave. It's cheaper to get a flight that stops in japan. Will this be possible since i don't have a passport? I know in korea all i have to have is my military ID and leave form to get in and out of country. I wasn't sure if this was the case in Japan.

Answer:

If you aren't leaving the airport and only changing planes, then you go through a transit security check (ID & boarding passes).

Only when you actually enter Japan (eg leave to go out of the airport) is probably when you will need. Just have your Military ID and travel papers and I think you should be ok. If you had a passport it makes things easier as the airlines when checking you in would probably ask for a passport, then you have to go through the long story and show your military ID.

If not 100% sure just call and ask the airline, make sure you are clear that you are only IN TRANSIT and not leaving into Japan (as long as you are in the airport making a transfer, technically you are not in Japan).

Japan hosts alot of US Military members so I think it would be ok, but double check with the airline.

How to move to japan?

Question:

i am aspiring to be a mangaka and i would have to move to japan. im only 15, so i wanted to think ahead and learn how to rent a place in japan while im in usa, and how to get a passport and stuff.

Answer:

First, there are plenty of places you could go that are not damaged from the tsunami, so that doesn't seem pertinent.

Second, to get a job in Japan, you need a work visa. To get a work visa, you need a 4 year college degree. There are very very few ways around that fact. It is not "the land of opportunity" it is the land of following the rules. The rules say you need a college education.

Therefore, START LEARNING JAPANESE NOW from a real native speaker who knows how to teach (I advise www.japonin.com) I started studying Japanese when I was 16. Ten years later, I have a master's degree, have been back and forth to Japan many times, and work as a translator. If you are serious, put all your effort into studying Japanese. No one will hire you if you can't speak exceptionally well.

Confused on moving to okinawa with marine husband.?

Question:

So, I am moving to okinawa with my husband and I am 1, 3 series shot behind on my vaccinations. My question is, if I start that vaccine will they let me move and finish the series after living in okinawa?

Answer:

You did not mention the vaccine you are receiving, however, most any vaccine you are receiving now should be available in Japan, especially if you have access to medical care provided by the U.S. military there.

Both the HPV and the Hepatitis B vaccines are a three shot series and both are common vaccines that should be available in all developed countries.

Can anime teach someone Japanese?

Question:

Right now I am watching "Bleach" and it reminds me of some people (I saw on YouTube) saying that they learned their Japanese watching anime over and over again. And they speak really good (for my ear).
Then, there are many others saying: "DON'T LEARN JAPANESE FROM ANIME" and I don't get it why. They do speak Japanese, right?

Answer:

Watching Japanese anime or any Japanese TV program is a good idea for improving your listening skills and also your vocabulary. These are two important elements in Learning Japanese. Keep a notebook and jot down any new words you hear. Then look them up and find out the meaning.

The best way to learn Japanese is through a variety of methods. You need to work on your grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Its best to think of these as separate categories and focus on each specific category as these require different methods and techniques.

Are people in Japan excited for the royal wedding in London?

Question:

Will they go out of their to watch it? or do they not care?

ANSWERS FROM PEOPLE IN JAPAN please since they will be ones who actually witness people's attitudes.

Answer:

Enough with the preachy, holier-than-thou attitudes.

You people try to make it sound like all 130 million Japanese people are working from dawn till dusk, building new houses and living on government rations, and that people do not have time to watch TV or be interested in things. While what happened in Fukushima is a very large-scale disaster, it has not shut down the country or anything.
Yes, it's been a month since the natural disaster, and the news coverage of the nuclear plants is non-stop, but Japanese people who are not homeless or grieving (meaning most of the country not affected by the earthquake and tsunami), are going about their daily business, watching stupid variety shows where members of Arashi hold koalas, Matsuko Deluxe is still waddling around Tokyo and eating Yaki tori, Doraemon and Chibi-Maruko-chan are still on the TV.

But since Japan has its own royal family, there is simply not that much interest. Lady Diana was the only royal that was really popular. I think the Lady Diana was the exception to the rule. She was beautiful and smart, and people around the world liked her. But since then, it's just the regular royals, who look more and more like Prince Charles (who is about as popular as George W. Bush LOL) every day.

Besides, even the English don't really give a crap about it. I just saw a survey that 40% of Britons want to pension off the royal family and retire this relic from the past.

Is Destination-Japan.com Good for traveling to Japan?

Question:

I'm planning on traveling to Japan in August-September, and will be going all alone. It'll be my first lone trip overseas, and I'll admit that I'm quite nervous about it...but I'm sure it'll be a great, unforgettable experience. I'm wanting to go through a travel agency on this first trip, and I'm really thinking about using www.destination-japan.com, but I was wondering if anyone here has used them - or if anyone knows where I can find some reviews on them.
I know they are managed by H.I.S. International Tours, which is supposed to be a very good travel agency (from the reviews I've read).

I know they're legit and everything, I'd just like to hear experiences or something.

The prices seem to be 'ok', I guess. I'd love recommendations for other agencies if anyone has any. Thanks in advance.

Answer:

when i was living in japan i used iace. they were pretty good

Why is it so important to be polite in Japan?

Question:

Do you also have to be polite when you're in a bad mood?

Answer:

It's a cultural development that comes from their isolation. Japan's population has only grown, but the island remains the same size (obviously). The traditions of people living in such tight quarters must accomodate for the average frustrations it causes or else there would be rioting and fighting non-stop. This means that forcing politeness (even when insincere) is a way to circumvent problems before they happen.

culture, arts, concerts, low cost of living, less crime nice young family friendly neighbor hood with many different cultural back ground for Japanese, American couples? I know Japanese community tend to be in New York City, Chicago, LA or California some where, but do not really like that Japanese pressures. huge cities sounds nice but too expense and high in crime. Forget about the South its bit of a twilight zone down there, North sounds nice, but people seems to be loud and rude.... If you are a local of where you grew up, that may be different and I hope you like it where you live. But that is not I am asking. :-)

Answer:

Columbia, Maryland...I think N.Y or N.J might have a reputation for loud & rude but not most of the North East....you might want to look for states that have high I.Q levels....I still think the state I live in specifically in Columbia, MD would be best for you.

What are the carry on restrictions for Japanese domestic flights?

Question:

I'm flying from Kobe to Okinawa and back for Golden Week, and I'm trying to figure out whether or not I'll have to check luggage on the flight back, since I'll be buying omiyage for my coworkers and friends.

Answer:

Best to check with the airline, but if not connected to any international flights, the bag weight limit is comparatively small.
About 15kg for checked-in bags. If you have an international ticket, then the international rules will apply. The same restrictions apply as international - for carry on, no liquids over 90ml, including gels, pastes, etc. And you can't carry things like knives.

Is it safe to buy things from Japan via online shopping?

Question:

I've heard on the news that radiation level is big, and has spread in near countries of Japan. Thing is, i want to buy from a shop located in Kanagawa. I don't know about the radioactivity in this area, but i seriously want to know if it's safe to buy. Is there any danger? Don't get me wrong, but im really concerned.

Answer:

You heard wrong. There is no danger in buying Japanese products. The only dangerous areas are in or a stones throw from the nuke plants. And that's in the north east part of Japan. You have nothing to worry about. If there was any dangers it would be killing off the people who sell the stuff !

Who Is affected by the Radiation In Japan?

Question:

I been looking all over the web and I can't find the right answer. Like who is most affected? will it affect the market ? can radiation affect peoples health in Japan and all over the world? is electricity a problem ?

thanx guys I really need this one =]

Answer:

According to articles on the web and TV reports

HEALTH
・Two power plant workers were affected by radiation and got injured. They got burned on their feet and legs, treated at once. Things were going well.
・Another woman was exposed to higher-than-safety-level radiation during her work. She was transferred to another section soon after that.

Electricity
・Rolling blackouts were under way in Tokyo Electric Power Company area and now suspended. It's not clear when they will be carried out again.
(Tohoku Electric Power Company announced the possibility of rolling blackouts just after the quake , but weren't realized after all.)

Market
・Shipments of vegetables and raw milk from part of Fukushima and prefectures around it were banned.
・Fishermen in Ibaraki and Chiba suspended their fishing activities after radioactive fish were discovered off Fukushima.

And as the cheapest902 answers, residents around the power plant were forced to evacuate.
I want to express my sympathy to them.

Google, and you'll find articles about those.

A question for "haffu"...?

Question:

Just out of curiosity, what features did you inherit from your parents? Do you look more like your Japanese half, or your other half? And ultimately, do you consider yourself Japanese, or not? Kind of a strange question, but I'm just curious. :P

Answer:

That isn't really a polite word anyone should use. I have a male friend who has a white father and a Japanese mother. He looks white. I have another friend who is married to a Japanese lady. Their daughter looks Japanese. So I'm sure there's no set answer for this.
What they consider themselves may depend on where they live. My friend here is 100 % American and has no interest in his Japanese half.

Average Japanese heights now?

Question:

I was curious about this. This is a question for natives and people who have visited Japan. I am a girl who's adult height is 5"5... in cm that would be 165? Is that too tall? I plan on going to Japan one day, and I don't want to be seen as weird... or too tall. I would feel so weird...

>.<

So would I stick out too much?

Answer:

The average height for a woman in Japan is 158.8 cm (or about 5'2") and a man is 171.2cm (or about 5'7"). Sure, you might be a little taller than average, but is it that bad? It's not by that much, and I don't think someone will look at you and say "Oh my gosh, she's 5'5", that's crazy!" So don't worry about it ^_^
