The tsunami was caused by an undersea mega thrust earthquake which struck just off the coast of Japan, at 2:46pm JST, on March 11 2011. The tsunami greatly affected the region of Tohoku in North Eastern Japan, including the city of Sendai and many coastal towns including Tagajo and Rikuzentakata.
