Why did japanese emperors wear clothes like this ?

Very very wide. Why did they wear it like that ?? Is there any practical reason for it, any thought or statement of showing of something ??

Answer:

That wear is called Sokutai =束帯.
I'm not sure why. But they thought it was really polite at that time.
