How can I help Japan?

Question:

I would really like to help Japan, but my parents are very skeptical about where the money is actually going. I wanted to do a bake sale at the neighborhood garage sale we're going to have, but they said to choose a cause closer to home. I don't know what to do, but I truly want to help the Japanese people. I'm 15, and I can't drive, go anywhere, etc.

Any suggestions?

Answer:

Check the newspaper and see if there are any fundraising events happening nearby! Perhaps you can volunteer at the event and help out!
You won't donate directly, but you would be showing that you want to support Japan!

If you have some money, go around several shops and see if any of them have donation boxes?

If convicted of domestic battery can i still go to japan?

Question:

my friends suppose to go back to japan but was convicted of domestic battery and heard
that he cant go back to japan because of this
anyone know?

Answer:

depends on the type of visa he has or wants to obtain

For a tourist visa, there is no way for the immigration officer to know that your friend has a criminal record so most likely he will be allowed in

For a work/resident visa, I believe you are asked to state on the application whether you have had any criminal convictions in the past - if he was to neglect mentioning his conviction, I am not sure how the Japanese authorities will verify this information

So, in short - your friend should be ok to enter Japan

PS. in the title of your question you refer to the convicted domestic battery person as yourself and yet in the main question you refer to a friend...

Would Japanese men like a black stripper?

Question:

I want to move to Japan and become a famous black stripper who is payed lots of money to travel across Japan to pole dance and get naked for the men.. or women. It's all good.

I'm very comfortable with my sexuality.

Answer:

Hey, it's possible... Can't be many of them in Japan. But finding someone to hire you will be a problem. You need a work visa to work in Japan. You could get a entertainer visa if you can find someone to hire you. Won't be easy though. You'll have to find an agency that sends dancers over seas.

Is it safe to work in Tokyo, Japan now?

Question:

I heard from news that Japan is badly hit with tsunami, earthquake and nuclear meltdown. I got a job offer recently to work in Tokyo, Japan.

Answer:

Sure, it's safe. Tokyo is more than 150 miles away from the nuke.

Addition:
>but isn't that true the nuclear debris can be brought by wind to Tokyo as well?

Not true. Even if they are brought, it's harmless amount.

>With all the recent news saying that the food and water in Japan is also contaminated by radiation.

Contaminated food and water is ones from areas around the nuke.

What are some of the things that happened when the radiation leaked in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

On August 29 at 6 p.m., the Nuclear Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) announced
at a press conference that TEPCO had falsified
voluntary inspection reports and concealed it
for many years. TEPCO admitted the stated
facts at the press conference later in the same
day. According to the agency, TEPCO has
falsified the inspection records and attempted
to hide cracks in reactor vessel shrouds in 13
units of the 17 nuclear power plants owned by
TEPCO, including Fukushima I (6 reactors),
Fukushima II (4 reactors), and Kashiwazaki-
Kariwa (7 reactors). However, the agency
maintained that there should be no problem
regarding the safety of the nuclear power
plants. Ironically, the safety assessment by the
agency was based on TEPCO’s calculation.

What are Japanese People like?

Question:

I love anime, so I wouldn't mind learning the language and maybe going to japan one day (5 years away at least).

But what are the people like?
Since Im going to sound a little racist and group all asian people into the same boat, but of what I've met of asian people in high school and at course they seem quite stuck up themselves and looked down on us white guys was the feeling I got in high school, But I think they were korean.

So tell me what are the people like?
Would they be rude to me if I ever took a holiday there and could just talk a bit of Japanese?
Are they nice to foreigners?

Or whats something from a foreigner's point of view of the people, like I've heard the french aren't very nice people to those who can't speak their language.

Are they racist?
Like one of my friends recently got beaten up by 20people in amsterdam and he said the only thing he did wrong was speaking english and he said he wasn't american or english he was from new zealand and he could speak the language no problem either, yet they still kept going him.
Btw he lived there so he was fluent in the language

Answer:

Japanese people in general are very polite and respectful. They treat you very well, and are very hospitable as well. I wouldn't think that they would be mean to you because your a foreigner, or because you can only speak English. From my past experience at airports and on the street, they will try very hard to understand what you are trying to say and help you, or find someone else who can. Japanese people are awesomee!

Is airline food from Japan safe?

Question:

I'm going to fly to Asia and my connection is through Japan and I'm wondering if the airplane food is possibly irradiated, or is airline food prepared in another country? I'm flying from US to Taiwan.

Answer:

They don't serve it if it's contaminated. They check radiation level if it's from areas around the nuke.

Do you think enough is being done to help Japan?

Question:

from other countries like the USA..

Answer:

Japan does not need any more financial assistance from overseas.
A few billion yen of donations have been sent to Japan Red Cross from within Japan and overseas.
However, the fact is that virtually none of them have been used to save the quake and tsunami victims. It has been 2 weeks from the disaster, and 400,000 people are still in temporary shelters, but, most of the money is still in the Red Cross bank account, believe or not!!
Why?
Because the Red Cross has no authority to purchase food and goods, and distribute money directly to the victims. The money should be distributed to the local city governments first who are expected to take care of the details according to the needs of their citizens. However, many of the city governments in the areas devastated by tsunami are also destroyed and many of the city workers were also victimized. So, the Red Cross has no way to distribute the money to local authorities. I know you would say, "then, why don't the government of Japan do the job?" I agree 100%. But our government bureaucrats in Tokyo keep saying, "the money should be distributed evenly to local cities, but the areas are so widespread, and the whole picture of the disaster is not certain yet." What a stupid comment! They are making the whole nation FURIOUS!!

What American sodas, sweets, or candies are not sold in Japan?

Question:

I'm sending some over for a birthday present but I don't know what is and isn't sold in Japan.
I heard they don't have poptarts, little debbie snacks, and reeces cups. What else is not sold over there?

Answer:

I've lived here 10 years and have a sweet tooth.

I've never found 3 Musketeers, black licorice (not much red either), Twinkies and all those snack cakes (they DO have an expiration date, so they have to be sent airmail)

If you want a long list check out a website in Japan that specializes in importing food for foreigners who live here Foreign Buyers Club, plus a site that ships stuff out from one of the (only 6!) Costco stores in all of Japan, The Flying Pig. Just for ideas of what's popular.

Their top sellers are usually things we can't find easily in Japan.

-As I have already said/mentioned
in both hiragana/kanji and romaji please.

*By my experience, this site does not allow too many japanese words in an answer.

Given the levels of radiation in Japan's seawater, should we be concerned about fish and seafood globally?

Question:

I eat a lot of seafood and fish. I also like Japanese food, green tea etc. I am wondering given the radiation spikes in the nuclear plant area (Fukushima) in Japan, should we be concerned about seafood (even if it is not from Japan). Since ocean currents do travel, how much of a risk does the radition over there impact the food chain globally?

Answer:

I'm personally laying off for now. There are no guarantees with anything these days. Our government says all is well, no harm done here. Ha...that's when you really have to worry. Issues don't surface until the percentage for cancer patients spike. Lovely, better to be safe than sorry.

French President Sarkozy and Areva CEO are now in Tokyo- May I understand...?

Question:

They have offered to help Japan with the nukes devastated by tsunami, which have been leaking out radioactive substances. May I take this as a sign that French are thinking the worst is over and they they will be able to bring the problem under control? (They would not make such an offer if they think otherwise.)

P.S. To put it in perspective: No sooner had the tsunami devastated the nukes, Areva's nuclear engineers stationed there disappeared. Now Areva is offering to send engineers back for on-site help at the nukes.

Answer:

>May I take this as a sign that French are thinking the worst is over and they they will be able to bring the problem under control? (They would not make such an offer if they think otherwise.)

I think so.

>To put it in perspective: No sooner had the tsunami devastated the nukes, Areva's nuclear engineers stationed there disappeared.

It's because TEPCO did not ask them to stay.

>Now Areva is offering to send engineers back for on-site help at the nukes.

It's because TEPCO asked them to help.

How bad are the radiation levels in japan?

Question:

how bad are the radiation levels in japan? how long will it take before it's safe to visit japan in general (not like fukishima but tokyo and in general). how long before all the radiation damage will be undone? thanks!

Answer:

Last I heard it was read at 400 rads in the immediate area, and 10 in further places about 100 miles away. Although, there have been leaks into water and the ocean, and it is most likely much higher now. JSYK, 1000 rads creates radiation poisoning, and 2-3000 is deadly.

Tokyo may not be the best place to visit until they can get a handle on the radiation seepage, which is affecting the water and is at this point harmful to small children and newborns.

I would think the southern part of Japan should be otherwise okay to visit, although I'd plan on waiting a while before trying to go on vacation. It could take years, and there may even be damage lasting to the Fukushima prefecture long after the initial problem is taken care of.

Is life back to normal in the rest of Japan?

Question:

do people go to work and schools and go out or arent they able to live normally?

Answer:

It takes life a long time to fully go back to normal after a major disaster.

Many people in other parts of Japan are able to go to work and school and go out as they normally would, but that doesn't mean their lives are fully back to normal. Many of them have family in affected areas. Many of them are still worried about the affected areas and people. Some of them are probably worried about the fear that things could still get worse for their country.

So, while parts of their lives are back to normal in unaffected areas, that doesn't mean that their lives are fully back to normal. When the risk is completely contained and over, they will begin to get back to normal in unaffected areas. Until then, it won't be fully normal for them.

Is it bad that I do not feel sad or even care about Japan's disaster?

Question:

For some reason, I do not care about what is happening in Japan at the moment, I do not care that people are dieing and have no homes and are hungry... I just dont know why!!! Does that make me a bad person?

Answer:

Naw, you're not a bad person! I think a lot of it has to do with your age. I'm 16 so I'm not trying to offend you, but a lot of times teenagers are sort of selfish and they don't really have compassion for much of anything unless it involves them. It's a phase everyone goes through :P

Question:

My class mates and I have a artist we admire and were hoping someone could send and wanted to send a message to his e-mail, just to show our admiration. Its pretty nerdy, but the idea of a response tickles our sides:

"Hello Sir! Forgive the sudden message, we are a small group of art college students in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States and recently dscovered your tattoo work! We really admire such bold work and hope that one day we will be able to transfer our own long thought out designs to our skin. May we ask what influenced you to begin such an intriguing process as full body tattooing? We know everyone has their own reasons, we three have been saving for our tattoos since we were 15. We wish you the best during japan's troubled times and pray you, your loved one,and countrymen stay strong and healty!

Thank you for inspiriing us,

I'm not sure what kind of full body tatto, you are talking about.

Whats a good city to stay in Japan for 3 months?

Question:

I'm going to Japan for 3 months on student exchange in November to February to experience the culture and learn the language and I'm allowed to list preferences for which city or prefecture i would like to stay in. Considering the radiation crisis and everything what do you think the best cities would be for a 16 year old exchange student?

Answer:

In or near Fukuoka. It's clean, it is by the ocean, there is a lot to do. It is also the largest city in
Kyushu, the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan. It has great seafood, the people are
nice, the weather is good. It's not too small, it's not too big. It's far from where the problems are.
Most festivals are held in warmer months, but Fukuoka has a festival in Janaury, Tokouka Ebisu.

How can i go to school in Japan?

Question:

So I want to go to high school in Japan, but I don't want to go as a foreign exchange student. Is there any other way?

Answer:

People need to take a chill pill in regards to this current incident.
First off, if you are in places like Kyoto and Osaka, you are unaffected by any of the current events.

Second, odds are the power plant will not explode into smithereens at this point and time.

Now finally to answer the person's question.
Aside from foreign exchange, the only other way is to get your family to move to Japan and take up residency in Japan. There you can enroll as a resident. If you have another family member in Japan you will need to transfer custodian rights to them. As both scenarios are highly unlikely NO there is no other way until you graduate high school.

How does Japan really feel about gays, cross dressers, and different age relationships?

I've been reading and watching a lot of anime lately and the majority of the guy characters seem to hint at homosexual tendencies very often, there are a lot of gays in anime, a lot of guys cross dress or are overly feminine, and I've encountered a lot of not age appropriate relationships. Like teens and adults being in love or preteens and adults. So is Japan really ok with all this stuff?
Personally I think it would be cool since I want to live there some day!

Answer:

Anime often portrays exaggeration so it does not mean it's real. Japan is open to the LGBT/gay community. There are gay prides happening every year in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. There are also gay bars and many gay entertainers. In TV, there are gay/crossdressing/transvestite entertainers. But gay marriage is still not honored here. I know some European gay people working as entertainers in some gay bars in Shinjuku.
May-December or different age relationship is often judged by many people. There are still many people close minded by it especially if it's a huge gap like 20 years above. Take for example Erika Sawajiri (24 yrs old) and her ex husband which is 46 years old. Many people criticized them.

So in conclusion, Japan is not a land of anything alright and happy endings. Many people still have strict moral codes.

What to get for my Japanese friend?

Question:

My coworker is transferring back to Japan. My coworkers and I have pooled a little money to buy a gift for him and his family. He is married and has three children under 10.
We were originally thinking backpacks or stuffed animals for the children, but are still unsure what to buy them and definitely unsure what to get him and his wife .... any ideas ? We don't want to get them something they can easily buy in Japan. Possibly something memorable about America?
Any answers are welcome !
Thanks in advance !

Answer:

Go with the food/drink idea. It's the right answer. If it's something local to you, and is perceived as
a luxury item, it will go over big. They are going to have to travel with whatever it is, another factor.

Good luck!

Unbelievable footage from Japan port?

Question:

http://viralvideochart.unrulymedia.com/y…

Aerial photos don't seem to do the reality of the damage much justice.
The most shocking photo I've seen of the disaster so far was that of collective burial, which is doubly unusual in Japan...

Why do the Japanese loved the yakuzas so much?

Question:

Nearly everyone I've met in Japan said they aren't harmful & not petty thieves, instead they're working on a much larger crime scale, helping the community once in a while & considered honorable among the communities. But:

1. They'll murder people who get in their way
2. Debt collectors who'd corner people to the point of suicide
3. Blackmailing people to the point of destroying their whole career, family & life
4. Drug dealers who'd ruin the younger generations for their lifetime
5. Pimps who'd encourage your daughters into prostitution
6. Human trafficker a.k.a slave traders
7. Muscled out small businesses with unhealthy business practices
8. Setting people up into gambling, desperation & debts
9. Corrupting the government
10. Destroying the Japanese economy in the long run
11. And overall making a much larger mess in a day than what small petty thieves may have done in their lifetime

I knew they helped communities once in a while, but the impact of their actions had caused immense destructions than mere donations. And yes, their existence helped keeping petty thieves rate low, but won't you rather have the small petty thieves as in general they are way much harmless in the longer/shorter run economy/society wise, compared to the crime lord yakuzas?

Thereby I'm unable to understand, why did the Japanese still adored and worshiped the yakuzas so much, and calling these sociopaths honorable, cool & brave?

Answer:

Don't know where you got your twisted facts from, but nobody love the Yakuzas here. Used to be people join Yakuzas because they can't get jobs. These days its not practical to join because its no longer as lucrative as it used to be. In fact, the Yakuzas are having a hard time recruiting young candidates thanks to the economic progress Japan has made. These days they're so desperate that they're turning to foreigners in Japan. Foreigners/overstayers who can't get jobs & are desperate for scraps.

Not only that, nobody fear them anymore, according to my friend who runs a used car dealership. He said if they were to ask for protection money or try anything funny with him, he'd just call the police on them. Once he even refused to sell a car to an unruly Yakuza customer. Not that he discriminate against them, if they are polite and resonable, he'll still do business with them.

Will all areas of Japan be affected by radiation?

Question:

Answer:

It is unknown how far the radiation is going, and some people believe that it will hit alot of the area, except only small amounts of radiation will be seen in some areas.
However people over in Japan now are working around the clock to stop this disaster, and sadly no one really knows yet what lies ahead. However its been such a long time really since it all started, and it certainly doesn't look very good.

The individual characters
A description of the exact meaning (ie a sentence/example)

Will wearing long and loose socks make me look like a follower?

Question:

http://s2.hubimg.com/u/3564665_f520.jpg

You know, the very old but known sock trend in Japan that's still somewhat around today?
Yeah... I just want to wear the socks in that particular style, but I don't wanna get called a Japanese wannabe for it, or "otaku". There are kind of a lot of Asians in my area, so yeah...

Do you think I should still wear it?

Answer:

It's your fashion. You do not have to ask what others think. Wear what you like to wear.

How could our lives be affected by what's going on in japan?

Prolonged low level exposure to radiation such as Japan has unleashed on the world cause random mutations. Look for a lot of human birth defects and a lot of still-born beasts with abnormalities.

Host families in Japan?

Question:

How should you act with them?
Should you make dinner for them?
Do you eat with them?
Do they mind having conversations with you?
Sorry, I don't know anything about them and would like to learn before I meet and stay with mine

Answer:

Act politely and always take off your shoes at the door! There is usually an area you leave all your shoes. Just follow your family. Obviously act as you would if you were visiting someone elses home, so always say please and thankyou, keep the bathroom and kitchen clean if you use it, and make the bed/futon every morning

As for making dinner, your host mum will usually do everything like that for you, considering she has to cook for the rest of the family herself. I am not saying however that you shouldn't try to help her, because I helped my host mum in the kitchen, and she was always very happy. I have stayed with 2 different families before and always got Japanese food, so westernized meals you are most likely to have at home won't be made. however you wil be suprised at some of the things they eat. if you haven't been there before in other words, don't just think it is all sushi, rice and tofu.
As for conversations, of course they want to talk to you. as they have decided to have you its because they usually want to learn about your own country, or have experienced other great students like you beforehand. its a good idea to therefore bring gifts such as a calendarr, pens and pencils, photos and toys of your country for them to see.
Also how good are you at japanese? remember to always speak in the 'plain form' way, as they are family :).
for example: I eat sushi : sushi o taberu
don't say: sushi o tabemasu.
only if you were talking to a teacher/store owner, etc. (people you do not know)

Are Japanese teens/young adults friendly to foreigners?

Question:

I want to do study abroad/exchange in university when I am 20 years old, to a Japanese city, and I was wondering if I would be able to make friends easily there ?
I would have studied the language beforehand and continue studying up there

Can I make friends with Japanese girls and boys , and maybe a boyfriend?
I am worried that I'll just end up hanging out with other foreign ppl at the university

Answer:

Yes they are friendly, however if you do not speak Japanese prepare to make friends mainly with the Japanese students who are learning English and/or preparing to study abroad in an English speaking country soon.

There will be those who do not wish to befriend a foreigner, those who want to be your friend because they think foreigners are "cool", and those who don't care what you are as long as you are a good/fun person.

Edit: Not sure why the thumbs downs, this is exactly what happened to me while I was there and pretty much every other exchange student that was at the school with me.

When will it be safe to visit Japan again?

Question:

Does anyone have any clue how long will it take?
The Places we intend to visit are:
-Tokyo
-Osaka
-Yokohama
-Nara
-Kyoto
Are they safe and if not how long till they become safe.

Answer:

People really need to stop the Hysteria.

ALL the places you mentioned on your list is SAFE to visit RIGHT NOW. Everything west of Tokyo is 100% fine and was not affected. Tokyo itself is FINE, WE ARE ALIVE IN TOKYO, the CITY WAS NOT DESTROYED.

If you are worried about radiation levels, the radiation levels in Tokyo are no more then normal background radiation anywhere else. You get more radiation from a doctor's visit and getting x-rays then you do from standing on the streets of Tokyo.

The only areas not safe to visit right now are the areas immediately hit in northern/northeastern Japan. None of those cities are on your list.

If you marry in Japan while on a temporary Visa can you extend your stay and/or apply for permanent residency?

Question:

What if you are in Japan on a temporary Visa (Like Tourist or Student Visa) and suddenly get married to a Japanaese woman? Hey, it can happen (If you're REALLY hot?). Can you then petition for an extension to your stay? Or can you apply for permanent residency? Or can you perhaps apply for a work permit in Japan? What are the benefits of getting married in Japan, if any, to those who are staying there temporarily? For the record, I don't plan on doing this! But one of my co-workers shared with me this story about how he came to the states (USA) after crossing the border, got married, and got all his stuff fixed. I believe he said that sometime after he got married he got his green card thanks to his spouse. Then eventually his Citizenship. So yeah, it makes me wonder if things like that happen in Japan. Because I know that there are a lot of Chinese/Korean/Brazillian/Other immigrants with either temporary visas or expired visas. I mean, I'm sure some can suddenly get married and have kids or something. So, what happens to them? Do their families just suddenly get torn apart when one of the parents has to leave? Or does the parent get to stay with them now and provide for the family?

Answer:

OK you have a lack of knowledge here's the deal.

If you come on a temporary visitor's permit and get married. You change and apply for a spouse visa.
Spouse visa is subject to inspection, for example they will check if it is not a "fake" marriage. So meeting someone and getting married really fast will be very very suspicious to Immigration inspectors.

Permanent Residency comes 3-5 years later and you have to apply for that, 3-5 years after living in Japan.

If you won a free 1 week tour to Japan, would you go?

Question:

Despite the nuclear "news".

Answer:

Of course, I'd go.

The nuclear news is ratings grabbing from fear mongering. Unless you decide to take a tour of the plants (and I don't think there are any right now :-) You're perfectly safe. The areas hit by the tsunami are in far worse shape then the Fukushima plant.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

What percentage of electrical power in Japan has been disrupted?

Question:

by Daiichi/Fushishima situation. 5 reactors is significant.

What percentage of Japan's electrical needs were supplied by this facility??

Answer:

Note that Western Japan and Eastern Japan run on different power grids. Western Japan is completely unaffected.

Western Japan runs on 100v 60hz but Eastern Japan runs on 100v 50hz. This is due to a long complicated history dating back to the 1880s and Japan never unified it's power grid.

Because of that and due to the low number of power conversion stations, power from Western Japan cannot be sent to Eastern Japan in great numbers to be of any real assistance.

How long will it take for Japan to recover?

Question:

Answer:

Not all of Japan was affected by the earthquake and tsunami. I think you mean how long will it take for the disaster-stricken areas to recover. For the towns destroyed by the tsunamis, it will take at least four or five years to clean up and rebuild. But some of them may never recover.

Where should I go in south - southwest of Japan?

Question:

I'm off to Japan in a few weeks. First week will be in Tokyo for 3 days then fly out to Seoul for 5 days, then once in Japan straight to Nagoya for the day, Kyoto - 3 days, Osaka - 3 days. I have one last week, Where should I go for the last week? Was planning on staying in Tokyo but thought wouldn't mind moving around and seeing more of south - southwest of Japan. I'll definately head to Hiroshima for the day. Some people have recommended: Nara/Himeji/Shikoku etc... So yeah where should I go and for how many days in each city? I'll be using a JR Rail Pass.

Answer:

Head up to Kanazawa for a day if you get a chance.

Nara is nice, but nothing that special. There's nothing there you won't have already seen better versions of in Kyoto (except for the deer roaming the streets that let you pet them).

If you go to Hiroshima, then take the ferry over to Miyajima. You might also want to check out the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Nagasaki is a pretty city with some good food and attractions: Glover Garden, China Town, etc.

Fukuoka is great for living, but I'm not sure about tourist attractions. I live around Tenjin and it's wonderful, but seeing as you will have already been to Tokyo... Granted, it's still nice. If you -do- come, be sure to try Hakata Ramen (the best in Japan!).

Have fun. :)

Why is the Chernoybl option not being used in Japan? Is the IAEA doing enough to help?

Question:

Probably not a ton of nuke experts at YahooAnswers, but was wondering if anyone has found opinions by reputable experts as to what the worst case scenario means for other countries outside of Japan and if a Chernoybl solution is possible? Thanks !

Answer:

That's cause the Chernobyl option involves exposing solders to lethal radiation trying to clean up the disaster then eventually dumping a bunch on concrete on the reactor and abandoning the whole area for miles.

What are the purpose and history of japanese TENGU geta(traditional footwear)?

Question:

These geta have only 1 "tooth" holding it up instead of the usual 2. I was curious: What is the purpose of wearing something so seemingly unstable? Martial arts? Fashion? Are they only for men? Here is link to picture: http://en.citizendium.org/images/thumb/e/eb/Tengu-geta.jpg/300px-Tengu-geta.jpg

Answer:

Ipponba-geta (one-tooth geta or tengu geta)
In Japan, the one-tooth geta is believed to be used by a goblin from Japanese legends during festivals, and by mountain priests while training in fields and mountains. The tengu geta are also used by boy cheerleaders in high schools. They're good as ceremonial footwear because they give the impression that they're hard to walk with and dangerous so they aren't used as everyday geta. However, recently these geta have become more popular for previously unknown effects. They are now used for training in martial arts, for rehabilitation training, for training in mountain climbing, and are used often for teaching in school. These geta are very agile and nimble footwear for bad roads or steep slopes and are used by mountain priests who wear these geta for training in fields and mountains. At the same time they have the effect of building up one's strength. Also, because of the posture they require, they feel refreshing as they make you straighten your back and cause the soul to feel renewed. They are also called "never-fall-to-the-ground-geta". People can be superstitious about these geta and because they are "never-fall-geta" some students use them for good luck on examination day. These ipponba-geta (one tooth geta) have still more unknown effects. Can we say that the Tengu goblin's supernatural power geta is also a precious geta?

How do I write and say this in Japanese?

Question:

Hi, :)
I was listening to a song, and in a line of the song, the words were "Boku ni hohoenderu egao ga sukidayo"

Could someone please write this in Japanese for me, and tell me how to pronounce it properly?

Would really appreciate it, thanks ^^

Answer:

Boku ni hohoenderu egao ga sukidayo (boh-koo knee hoh-hoh-enderoo ega-oh ga sookee da yoh)
僕に微笑えんでる笑顔が好きだよ. (ぼくにほほえんでるえがおがすきだよ.)

Here's a breakdown of its definition:

boku = i / me (male)
ni = indicates where the action goes
hohoenderu = smiling
egao = smiling face
ga suki = like
da = informal way of saying desu.
yo = a particle added at the end of the sentence as emphasis.

boku ni hohoenderu egao ga suki dayo = I like the face that's looking at me.

What is the reputation of Japanese Police Officers?

Question:

Do they have better reputation than American Police Officers? Do they have as many police brutality cases as their American counterparts? If they make a mistake, do they apologize to you like we so often see with Japanese people?

Answer:

>Do they have better reputation than American Police Officers?

I can't compare because I don't know American cops.

>Do they have as many police brutality cases as their American counterparts?

I have never seen police brutality in my life.

>If they make a mistake, do they apologize to you like we so often see with Japanese people?

I have seen them apologizing, yes.

Some of them are cold. Cops at koban (police box on street) are not cold. But when I visit a police station, some cops there are cold. But police officers in general are good.

BTW, it's not true that Japanese cops take bribes from citizens. I have never given them bribes in my life.

Answer:

1. Yes, we had also had a strong earthquake 6 years ago here in Fukuoka. But not devastating as the Tohoku.

2. I felt sad, scared and very worried because my mother and older sister were in Yamagata when it happened.

3. Yes, we donated money, clothing and medicines for the victims. I haven't really visited the site because the government is very strict on allowing rescuers to go to the site. We had a plan though on helping out but like I said, it is very strict.

4. Yes, I try to stay prepared at all the time as possible.

5. Be calm and alert. Make sure we find a safe place with our family.

6. I live here so I'm doing it every day.

Will the radiation in Japan cause less popularity to Japanese restaurant?

Question:

Will restaurants be affected heaps because of the circumstances in Japan at the moment?

I want to open a Japanese restaurant in the next 2-3 years but people kept telling me restaurant are being closed down or no one will eat from it.

A lot can be just exaggeration and obviously not everyone in the world will avoid eating Japanese food so what do you think?

Answer:

This incident has been marked by the holding back of information. Every day they admit to a little more, then a little more.

Radiation is increasing in foods produced in the U.S. now.

How many lies are people willing to swallow?

It proves again that you can't trust any industry to police itself. The Japanese nuclear regulatory people all have connections to nuclear power. The failed to follow the rules because they lusted after higher profits. Now that the results of their perfidy are plain to see, they should have the decency to take the traditional Japanese method of reclaiming their honor.

You notice that of the half dozen radioactive isotopes being pumped into the jet stream and into the sea, only iodine is ever mentioned. That is because it has a short half-life. The other materials will continue to poison us for years. Radiation poisoning is a cumulative thing. You can have a little exposure today, then everything id fine tomorrow. The maximum dosage is a lifetime total of intensity of radiation multiplied by time. A long exposure to low level radiation is the same as a shorter exposure to a higher level.

"Safe levels are determined by the LD-50, that dosage that is lethal to half the population. Excursion limits are generally a percentage of the LD-50, they are the intensities of radiation that may be harmless if the exposure is 4 hours or less in a lifetime. A one-time event. The radioactive material that has circled the globe is with us 24/7. The exposure continues for as long as the material is putting out radiation. So the iodine puts out radiation, after 8 days it puts out half as much then 8 days later half of that and so on. If it was radiating at one sixth of the acceptable excursion limit, you would receive enough radiation to make a marked reduction in your life span in two weeks. And after two weeks it is still producing 25% as much radiation as when it started.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY THIS IN JAPANESE?

Radiation level in kanagawa, Japan?

Question:

I am concerned about the effects of radiation leakage at Fukushima plant on Kanagawa, Japan.
I'm hearing that drinking water is fine, but people are still wearing masks for precautions.

Does the near future look bad for Kanagawa? (Especially with the recent news on higher radiation water found in many reactors...)
Thanks

Answer:

Radiation level in Kanagawa is at harmless level.

What is schooling in Japan like?

Question:

I'm currently a sophomore in highschool in Arizona, US and was wondering if it's too late for me to be a transfer student to go to Japan to study a year or two. I've always loved the culture and just EVERYTHING about Japan =) Also, do I need to have any specific requirements to do this? For example, do I need to be able to speak and understand Japanese? Also, what are the classes, extracurriculars, and teachers like? Is there a lot more homework compared to America? And the key question is if Japanese universities were better than America's and how they differ from American universities too. Also, how is dating in high school viewed upon over there? So in the end, I'm just wondering what the high schools and universities are like there for academics, peers/students, extracurriculars, and differences from US high schools and universities. Thanks so much for taking your time to answer this! ^^

P.S. Are all the high school/university students there typically happy and optimistic or do they hate their lives? haha, thanks!

Answer:

You can't join a high school or college in Japan without speaking, reading, and writing Japanese.

>And the key question is if Japanese universities were better than America's and how they differ from American universities too.

They study for entrance exams in Japan. But do not study much after joining a college. That's the biggest difference.

All other questions like dating, homework, happy, etc, it just depends on each person or school.

How are the living conditions in Japan?

Question:

Japan tends to have earthquakes... typhoons.. and stuff. But the country still impresses me.

How is life typically there? Cause I wanna live there.

If there's anybody from Japan, I'd also like to ask, how is the earthquake recovery?

Answer:

If you would like to live in a post war disaster zone and all the psychological stress that comes with that than welcome to Japan.
Rolling blackouts have plagued us for weeks.

Life is no longer "typical"

Life is slowly starting to recover, but there are so many problems.

I do not advise that you live in Japan, I think you should visit and think about it.

Is the Japanese nuclear industry inept to not handle the nuclear crisis?

Question:

US is now sending bots to Japan to help with the crisis over there. I think Japan is not ready for nuclear energy anymore. TEPCO is retarded. After all this is said and done, there will be alot of impeaching and firing to do...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_us_japan_nuclear

Answer:

If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:
http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fu…

And here is where you find current, factual status information:
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsun…

And here is a chart that helps make sense of the numbers:
http://www.xkcd.com/radiation/

You have to keep in mind that the media is out for ratings and that they are not in the business of disseminating "Just the facts, Ma'am".

Can someone tell me how NOT to act like a gaijin or tourist when I visit japan?

Question:

I want japanese people to think I am just a white person from a family who has been in japan for 100 years. I want them to think I know nothing about european/american culture.

Yes, I am an uber weeaboo, and very proud of it. I know americans and japanese alike hate weeaboos, but they can just get over it.

Answer:

I don't think Japanese people hate weeaboos. It's more than welcome.
But here are some knacks, I could think of:

Keep smiling. Keep silent in public.
Western tourist tend to be very talkative and sometime noisy.

Don't look around. Don't gaze upward.
Tourists tend to look around.

Keep slightly hunched posture. Look down while walking streets.
Japanese tend to keep their shoulder and back rounded. Keep hunched posture. Look down while walking streets. Their skeletal structure is slightly different, I guess.

Minimize your bag. Don't bring a backpack or a waist bag except in AKIHABARA.
For some reasons, Many of Otaku people in Akihabara bring backpacks.

Always sleep on train/bus, whenever you could have a seat.
I guess 50% of Japanese people sleep in the train, others play DS or Cellphone.
If you could sleep even when you are standing in the train, It's perfect.

Don't bring a folding sheet style map. Books are acceptable.
Even Japanese people might bring guide books, but unlikely to bring a folding sheet style maps.

Always bring cellphone, and manipulate it at least once in 3 minutes.
I even don't know whey they are always looking into their cellphones.

Never wear T-shouts with Japanese scripts, or Anime characters.
It's the evidence that you are a carefree tourist, or a weeaboo.

Always make sloppy noise when you eat noodle / pasta / soup.
This is Japanese authentic manner of eating.

Never even think of wearing Kimono / Japanese traditional suits.
Not many Japanese wear it, but many foreign tourists like to try.

Am I NOT going to be able to visit japan any time soon?

Because I reaaaaally want to got there by the time I'm 30, I only have 8 years left, but I hope to go before that. I think you know why I'm asking this....

Answer:

It depends on where in Japan you want to visit. In fact, there is no problem in western Japan like Osaka.

How the aggregate demand and supply equilibrium has changed since the tragic recent events in Japan?

Question:

1) How the aggregate demand and supply equilibrium has changed since the tragic recent events in Japan?

2) Did the aggregate demand and real GDP increased or decreased? Explain why.

Answer:

The situation is not over by a long shot. So there are more chapters to this story to be written. But so far the economic effects are quite negative. Air travel to Japan has strongly decreased, hurting the carriers. There are far fewer Japanese tourists going for trips abroad at the moment as well, even as much as 50% less at major destinations like the US west coast, which hurts restaurants, hotels, stores and tour companies. Many car makers, even US ones, have some parts made in factories near the disaster site - and this will sharply hurt production.
Japanese semiconductors are widely used in everything around you, and now there is a production shortage - manufacture will have to be moved elsewhere, which will cost time and money. Japan will need a lot of oil for energy to replace the nuclear plant, adding more to world demand. So you can see both demand and supply are effected, and GDP will take a major hit for the next few months at least.

Really want to learn Japanese but having a really hard time?

Question:

I know English as my native language and I take French at school (and also teach myself at home) and I can hold basic conversations in French. I have been studying Japanese really irregularly (real school has been too demanding for independent study) for months but I'm having a really hard time remembering all the hiragana and katakana. I mean, I can remember how to say a lot of words, and phrases, but only in romanji. I think what made French so easy for me is the alphabet and how our sentence structures and words are similar. What advice can you give me for remembering and retaining Japanese characters, it is so difficult for me to remember them? Also, I really want to learn Japanese properly so no advice askign what I want to use my Japanese for or encouraging me to just learn to speak it...

Answer:

You are focusing too much on learning to write Japanese. Can you say sentences in Japanese yet? If you can't then don't bother learning to write it yet.

You need to get an understanding of the sentences and words first.

When its time to learn to read and write, here is what you do. Start with Katakana. Learn 1 row at a time "a i u e o". Learn the stroke order, do this by writing the same character, over, and over, and over again. Once you know 'how' to write all 5 letters, then write in romaji, something that looks like this down a piece of paper

aueoi

aaiiuuoo

ooueeiia

, It looks like nonsence, and thats cause it is. Now go becide it and convert the romaji into katakana. It will help you remember them faster than just repeating. You may have to cheat and look a few times, but aventually you will get it.

Also go to a good learning website.

What are the chances that we in America will be affected by the radiation in Japan? And what kind of problems?

Question:

Answer:

Don't believe all the lies about "safe" levels of exposure. They favorite example is that it is the same as flying from Los Angeles to New York. What they leave out is you would have to be on a plane that never lands. The exposure just keeps going, and is getting worse, not better.

In about a year we will be seeing little news stories about babies being born with unusual birth defects. Put the nuke pimps will claim there is no connection to the exposure we are being hit with now.

Worried about radiation in japan Part 2?

Question:

Worried about radiation in japan?
I'm worried about radiation is there any home made remedies that can stop radiation getting into your body? I live in Ireland should I be worried or am I over thinking it....

that was my question two weeks ago look it up

people made a laugh about my question but the truth is now it has reached our shores and if a proper meltdown was to happen which is a possibility im very concerned for the health and well being of this planet not only Ireland if it can reach this far away god knows what kind of damage it is doing and could be done by these reactors........

any comments on this?

Answer:

THERE"S NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

I wish the media and people would stop being so hysteric about it.

There's nothing that can stop radiation from getting into your body, you are exposed to radiation all the time.

Sitting in front of a computer gives you radiation, going to the airport, using the phone, sleeping next to someone all emits radiation.

Sending letters overseas question?

Question:

ok so I have a pen pal in Japan and Korea so I was wondering about sending some letters to them.
If I only send a letter how much will it cost?
Do I have to fill out one of those forms that tell what is in the envelope? Like when you send a package.
Also can I just mail it from my mailbox or do I have to go to the post office to drop it off?

thank you if you can help me out.

Answer:

It's 98 cents an ounce for a regular air mail letter. You don't have to fill out any forms if all you send is a letter. If it's just a couple of pages 98 cents worth of stamps should be fine.
If you decide to send a package you would have to fill out a form that states what's inside and it's value.

What are Torii gates?

Question:

Answer:

Torii gates are found at the entrance of Shinto shrines and symbolize entering sacred places. Traditionally they are red and wooden but can also be of stone or metal and uncolored. A Torii gate consists of two pillar posts with two cross beams at the top, the upper one extending past the pillars on both sides and often the lower one does too. Some places like Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto have thousands of them together which form like a type of tunnel (best seen at night!).

What is the Japanese diaspora?

Question:

Answer:

The Japanese diaspora, and its individual members known as nikkei (日系?), are Japanese emigrants from Japan and their descendants that reside in a foreign country. Emigration from Japan first happened and was recorded as early as the 12th century to the Philippines, but did not become a mass phenomenon until the Meiji Era, when Japanese began to go to North America, beginning in 1897 with 35 emigrants to Mexico; and later Latin America, beginning in 1899 with 790 emigrants to Peru. There was also significant emigration to the territories of the Empire of Japan during the colonial period; however, most such emigrants repatriated to Japan after the end of World War II in Asia.

According to the Association of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad, there are about 2.5 million nikkei living in their adopted countries. The largest of these foreign communities are in Brazil, the United States and the Philippines. Descendants of emigrants from the Meiji Era still hold recognizable communities in those countries, forming separate ethnic groups from Japanese peoples in Japan.
