Question:
My family and I live in Tokyo, Japan and go to school/work there (and have lived there for 11 years). We evacuated 4 days after the earthquake/tsunami because of radiation concerns. We have been in the USA ever since then, just waiting to go home. We are torn whether to go back or to stay here for the rest of the school/work year. My son is graduating high school this year and my daughter is in early high school, but if we were to stay here they would home school. We are all very distraught and want to go home to Tokyo, but we are worried about the children's health. My children are especially wanting to go home VERY badly. I am back in Tokyo working, but my spouse and children are still in the USA. We would just like to know other people's opinions and what they would do. Thank you so much.
Answer:
There is more radiation in most places in the USA than there is (or will be even in a worst case scenario) in Tokyo.
You can see actual radiation levels in Tokyo on the link below. It's about half the average of most places in the USA and the same as it was before the quake. Even when the nuclear plant was at its worst, on those first few days, Tokyo didn't see much of a change in background radiation. Even places much closer to Fukushima have lower levels of radiation than the USA.
