Why are Japanese homes so close together?

Question:

I was looking at Japan on Google Street View and was looking at the homes why are they so packed together they can just about fit there car on the driveway...

Answer:

Because of limited space. You can't even walk in between houses. If two windows are open, you can climb over into your neighbors place !
It's not just Japan, though. There's the same issue in San Francisco.
