Question:

i'd like to get a komuso hat like this one

http://www.e-budostore.com/images_costum…

does anyone know where i can get one of these for less than the $200 list price i keep seeing?

it is made of straw, so there's no reason it should be priced so high

Answer:

It also looks very time consuming to make, which may explain some of the price. I'm not sure where you could find it.

Safe to study abroad in Osaka Japan or not?

Question:

I am scheduled to study abroad next semester in Osaka, Japan, and as much as I really want to go, i am concerned that it may be hazardous to my health to enter the country. I've heard on the news that America has experienced radiation from the aftermath of Japan's Earthquake, so i'm sure Osaka also has radiation. Also i am concerned about the drinking water in Osaka being contaminated as well as the food not being safe to eat.... I really want to go to Japan so can someone please extinguish my concerns and let me know it is indeed safe to take this once in a life time opportunity that i have been given. Thanks.

Answer:

I live in the area around there and everything is safe. Even Tokyo, which is much closer to Fukushima, is safe. The US embassy has declared that everything outside of the evacuation radius is safe.

I wouldn't worry about eating contaminated food. The government is being overly cautious about it. And if you are nervous, buy your own food. The fruits, vegetables and milk almost always say where they are from (especially the vegetables).

What is going to happen to Japan?

Question:

Im wondering if their going to try and rebuild the country or just evacuate because of the nuclear power plants.

Answer:

Asking this question is exactly the same as asking if the U.S. will be evacuated because of hurricane Katrina. The only rebuilding that needs to be done is from the tsunami damage to some coastal areas. Japan is the size of California. The power plant problem affects about 8 km and there is a 30 km radius where people have been evacuated from as a precaution. No one has been injured except for two workers who were drowned by the tsunami and one who died of a heart attack, he was sixty. No workers have exceeded the allowed radiation dosage so there are not expected to be any long term effects. None of the public is expected to have any radiation sickness either.

If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

And here is where you find current, factual status information:

What would Japan be like today if Buddhism wasn't introduced and Shinto was the only religion of Japan?

Question:

Answer:

Then we'll have other way of funeral. Seriously, please understand that most of us are not religious. We go to shrines, temples, do rituals, etc. but we're not really letting religion affect our decisions in life.
If Buddhism was not introduced, I think (in my opinion) there'll be a little effect. In present, not even everyone is familiar with Buddhism philosophies. So it would be just like today. No major differences at all. Except there'll be no monks praying in temples now.

Why aren't there many billionaires in Japan?

Question:

For a country that has such a high GDP, why are so there few billionaires?

Answer:

I don't know how come you think "not so many". There are 23 billionaires in 2010 Forbes list.

Actually, billionaires in Japan and in the world have much of their asset as stocks. But as Japanese stock market is slumping in the last 20 years, their asset value has been falling.

There used to be more than 100 of them in Japan. But now it's fewer because of stagnant stock market.

Other stock markets are doing fairly well.

Addition:
>because Hong Kong alone has nearly double the country of Japan's billionaires

HK has very low income tax rate. So billionaires want to move to HK. This place has completely different reason as to why there are many billionaires.

How to adress someone/start a letter in Japanese?

Question:

What I mean by this is, generally in English speaking countries you start off with "Dear ____" and then move on to whatever you wish to talk about.

How do you address the person you are writing to in Japanese? Are there any phrases you should place in the beginning or end of your letter?

How do you sign your name at the end? (as in "Regards, Yours Truly etc." type phrases?)

Answer:

Formal letters in Japanese are very complicated.

For example. you must put seasonal greeting after 拝啓. Seasonal greeting means a sentence talking about climate of this month of year. Like this,

晩春の候、皆様にはますますご清栄のこととお喜び申し上げます。

This is for May. Japanese MS Word has some templates for this.

Anyway, letter format changes depending on the purpose of your letter (birthday celebration? wedding celebration? saying thank you for something? etc).

You don't have to care all format now because it's very difficult to learn it right now. Just use 拝啓 and 敬具. And we do not put the name just below 拝啓.

When you are writing a fanletter, you do not have to stick general format. So you don't even need 拝啓 and 敬具.

Note that I already have some pictures for those organisms, but as I said before, it would be really nice if all of them are illustrated by you. This is the first list of many, because there are lots of organisms missing. The list is long, and I know you must be very busy, and I don´t want to abuse by taking your valuable time, so take all the time you need. I hope you have fun drawing them.
Welcome to the project by the way"

Thank you

Ok,so I'm going to Japan my sophomore year of High school, which is in one more year of school, and I don't have any appearence problems,I look asian all the way,but people have told me about my height.I am 5'8 and even in the states im pretty tall to adults aswell as children, plus I'm a girl!I have looked up some stars, japanese aswell as korean and they are reeally short!I have some self-esteem issues is what Im trying to say.So can you tell me if Ill stick out all too much, being a head over peoples head?Hitting my head on doors, will I even be able to fit the clothes?Since I am so long my body is slender but I wear a large in juniors and shop in womens now..and a 10 in pants. And the uniform? Will I even be able to fit it?I'm sorry if I'm asking so many questions but tell me as much as possible about if I'll stand out too much! Thanks!

Answer:

The average height of Japanese people is 5'7 for male and 5'3 for female.

So you might be too tall for a girl. But you would not hit your head on doors because there are many Japanese male with 5'8.

I think you can find some clothes because some Japanese girls have 5'8 height.

What do you think of foreigners in Living in Japan?

Question:

Japanese Natives: What do you think of foreigners in Living in Japan?? do you believe they can help cope with the dwindling population or not

will allowing to 2 million skilled foreign workers into Japan really help solve the population problem?

Answer:

A large number of Japanese people are having the toughtest time ever to hunt for their jobs.
Under these circumstances, if 2 million foreign workers flooded into Japan we would feel like we were engulfed by tsunami.

We must sove the population problem by having more Japanse children to maintain our uniformity.

Is south korea or japan a better place to go as a foreign exchange student?

Question:

for a girl especially which country would be better overall?

Answer:

. . . .

most foreign exchange programs only have programs to japan or china in the east asia area.

For me I would choose Japan. Japan has more recognition in the world and is a major player in the world market/economy, it is also more "global". They are more used to seeing foreigners around.

YFU (Youth For Understanding) is a exchange student program and has been in the Business for 60 years. Au-tho I have never been a foreign exchange student before, I have heard good comments about them. http://www.yfu.org/

Japanese drama recmmendations please?

Question:

Hii
I am looking for some good japanese dramas to watch. It would be great if you can recommend me some more.

Some important notes:

- i prefer the guy to be really cold, forceful and mean to the girl.
- I prefer serious dramas not comedy .
- I don't like love triangles.
- i hate "strong" main girls who are not really strong. i prefer realistic characters.
- don't mind at all if its sad.
- the storyline should be interesting and deals with a serious topic.
- drama that would shock you would be great.

LIKE for example:

last friends(LOVED the story and everything, and would really really like to watch something similar)
koizora
nodame cantabile
buzzer beat

please remommend me dramas similar to what i watched.
thank you in advance:)

I'm coming from japan and will travel to the philippines. what is the maximum amount of money that i can bring?

Question:

Answer:

Question asked and answered. A simple Google would have gotten you the answer.

Answer..... As much as you want. But if it is over $3K, you have to declare it. Same deal with the U.S. except I think the limit is $10K.

According to the article I read, you may be required to open a bank account with the excess, but that's just what one person said.

p.s please choose a place that wont be like the movie taken or involve anything like that and sorry if it offends some people it wasn't meant 2 be that way just in case

Answer:

You've got other answers that provide details and that are accurate, other than that last one about making $100K/operation which I very highly doubt is even remotely accurate.

I will answer your question in both parts.....

Could you go to Japan? Yes.
Would you not have any problems with plans? Be real. You have a snowball's chance in Hades.

I'll give you a suggestion. The sooner you stop with the 'wanted 2' and 'ways 2' the sooner people will take you seriously.
