Fukuoka and Radiation?

Question:

So my school Asian Club is debating whether or not to have the Japan trip next year. Some people suggest we go to Fukuoka, which is supposedly as far from Fukushima as Seattle to San Francisco. Still, we have fears over the radiation in food, as well as the wind changes that would blow the radiation south. It doesn't help that the japanese gov. is being all quiet about the dangers in the country. So what are your opinions? Should we risk it and go to Fukuoka, or just stick around and maybe go to a local Japantown?

Answer:

You will have more grief from a very strong yen than you will about radiation, which is now 5 months ago. And the winds don't typically blow from Fukushima down to Fukuoka anyway. It is a lovely city to visit for a trip, and close to some excellent locations like hot springs in Oita, a live volcano in Kumamoto, and Nagasaki. See www.tinyurl.com/see-fukuoka for a lot of things to do, as well as

Tourist deals in narita airport?

Question:

hey guys,
going to japan for a few days next week. going first to tokyo for 2 days. going to get JR passes at narita, and buy the metro passes (it's 600 when bought in airport, compared to 710 in the city).

till now, my plan is to buy tokyo metro open pass, which includes free usage for the 9 tokyo metro lines. are there any better options? or is this metro pass fine for basic sightseeing around tokyo?

also, what other kinds of tours/passes/deals can we get in narita airport?

thanks!

Answer:

Tokyo Metro is not the only railway lines in Tokyo. We have JR, and many other railway lines.

So if you bought Metro pass, you can take only metro.

There is a pass called Tokunai Pass which will enable you to take all JR trains in and around Tokyo. That is 730 yen.

But again, you can take only JR trains with this pass.

So the bottom line is, it's better to buy a single ticket every time you take a train. Or buy Suica/Pasmo prepaid card.

Addition:
Oh, I didn't notice that you will get JR Pass. So you don't need Tokunai Pass as you can take JR trains with JR Pass.

Is it possible to move to Japan if I have a job online and just want to buy a place there?

Question:

Like if I'm employed through the internet and I have an income, would they let me move to Japan or does it have to be a Japanese company?

Answer:

No.
Here's a thought--you can get a student visa, you can get a spousal visa, or a work visa if you work for a company in Japan.
You could get a student visa, to go to Japanese language school. (Go to school for a year or two in the AM and continue your telecommuting job.) You are not supposed to work full-time with a student visa (or there are restrictions or something,) but...you are working online, for a foreign company, so you are not paying taxes on the income in Japan, so it doesn't count. They would have no way of knowing, or even caring if it is not subject to Japanese taxation.

I also work for a company located in Europe, and work online only. But they cannot sponsor my visa, and I use a spousal visa since my wife is Japanese.

Are gaijin ever portrayed POSITIVELY in anime?

Question:

gaijin is japanese for foreigner. that is what they call us white people who visit japan.
in all of the animes i've seen portraying american tourists, they're always stereotyped as being, arrogant, dumb, and having big nose and small eyes. it kind of offends me, because i plan on going to japan someday and I don't want to be perceived that way.

Answer:

The first answerer has it right.
I grew up in the USA, and I had a friend from Taiwan, who was very sensitive to racism. He would always talk about how Americans "assume every Asian person can do Karate or Kung Fu, that they are all good at math, studious, like anime, etc, etc." If you watch just about any movie, TV show, or commercial before about 1998 the stereotypes are unbelievably bad. Especially by black comedians and TV shows. Blacks mercilessly make fun of other minority groups. Asians are the smallest group, and the most "foreign," so they are the butt of the joke more often than not.
Anyway, this Taiwanese guy, who had a slight accent, and was the only Asian at my school at the time, was always asked by the teacher to "say something in Chinese," or "Do you really eat cats?" (by the fvcking teacher!) this was like 1995 or so--15 years ago--I'm not talking about the 1950's here. (I live in the South, maybe California/West Coast is better, but probably not much)

In Japan it's the same--to white people and blacks, lthough blacks have it worse. And South Asians/Persians/Arabs--brown-skinned people too. I finally understood what my Taiwanese friend was talking about. There is no racism in the sense of 1950's Alabama, turn the firehose on black protesters, lynchings and KKK.
However there is that kind of ignorant "You are white so you _______" Or "Let's point when we see a white person and have a contest to see who can speak like a white person the best."

So yeah, there are assumptions, some bad--Americans are fat and loud and totally oblivious to other country's culture, and Americans always smile, and are too enthusiastic about everything. In fact many Japanese people go to English schools simply because they are quiet and morose by nature and want to feed off the enthusiasm of the English teacher. They actually say that too: "Genki wo morai ni iku." That's not so bad, but some people also make really stupid requests:
They want a blond woman to teach the class, they want a chick who is not fat to teach the class, they want a Canadian (because Canadian English is easiest to understand--Yes, English in Ontario is so much different from English in Wisconsin), and they get super-pissed when the teacher is Asian-American--even like a guy named "Joe Takayama" who can't speak Japanese and whose ancestors came to the USA in 1880. More American than I am. But he's "not gaijin enough," or "not a real gaijin."
Working in an eikaiwa school will teach you about the dark underbelly of "kokusaika" "internationalization." Japanese want pretty young gaijin to be circus clowns, or cute little ryuugakusei who make humorous language mistakes and work really hard at the local 7-11 but can't pronounce "Irrashaimase" correctly. A few eccentrics like me stay, but for the most part, they prefer you to go home after your expiration date---"Use before 2012" like a gallon of milk. Most people who stay become cynical--complaining at the gaijin bar-- or delusional--defending Japan no matter what on Internet message boards, and trying to impress gaijin and Japanese ladies with their encyclopedia-like knowledge of bonsai trees or something. (It doesn't work BTW)

How long does SAL shipping take if it is being shipped from Japan to CA?

Question:

I ordered a figure from Amiami and was wondering how long does it take. I was told that it takes longer than EMS and many people kept saying how it came fast in 8 days. It has been about 17 days for one thing I ordered and 14 days since I ordered a second item 3 days later. Why is it taking long?

Answer:

Usually, SAL takes less than 2 weeks from Japan to the US. But in some cases, it takes 3-4 weeks, depending on the air traffic situation. Since the regular mails and EMS have priority to "get on board," SAL items cannot be shipped unless the cargo planes have enough space for them, which makes SAL shipment unpredictable. I strongly recommend that you use the regular airmail (if you do not want to use the expensive EMS).

Have greencard&travel passport do i need visa for japan or not?

Question:

Answer:

Passport, of course. Green card? The only thing that tells me is that you are NOT a citizen of the US. You therefore don't get the easy 90 stay that Americans enjoy. You have to check your own country's agreement with Japan. You've been given a website. Or you could check with either your own or the Japanese embassy.

Can you give me the names of some high end spas in Japan or famous dermatologists for safe body peels?

Question:

Japanese women seem to have flawless skin and have highly researched skincare products. I'm visiting for 3 months so might as well get rid of some body scars while I'm there. Thanks!

Answer:

I don't think all Japanese women are going to spa or dermatologist. (In fact, dermatologist is a doctor to treat skin disease, not for beauty.).

And they generally do not speak English. So you need to communicate in Japanese.

There are so many places for peeling. You just said "in Japan". But you need to be more specific.

Questions for moving to Japan?

Question:

I would like to move Japan after taking a trip there, I just have a lot of questions.

First off, I'm 18 with a passport and I can get a visa. But since I want to live there, can I? I believe 21 is the legal adult age there. Will I be able to get an apartment and a Job? I'm aware getting a Job will be difficult without a full college degree. And How do these Visas work once I'm there? How do you gain citizenship once your over there? I think those are my main questions. If you would like to add anymore important information, please do.

Answer:

To get a work visa you need to have a four year degree, BA / BS., or ten years experience in a job field they need. The other visa option is student. This requires being accepted into a Japanese college & a lot of money. ( $80,000 - $100,000 ) .
The age of adulthood in Japan is 20.
You can't get a job without a degree. It's a requirement for a work visa. You can only stay 90 days as a visitor.
Sorry, this just isn't possible until you get a degree. And even then it wouldn't be certain.

What are some jobs that Japanese people won't/can't do.?

Question:

Answer:

Japanese will do most jobs if there is someone is qualified to do it.

As for jobs Japanese people can't do. Well, there are essentially no jobs that the Japanese cannot do. However there are jobs where there are a lack of qualified Japanese people to do.

One major job that foreigners get into is conversational English instruction. I note conversational English instruction, because there are Japanese qualified to teach non-conversational English (eg English by the book to pass tests).

What the Japanese lack are instructors in native conversational English instructors.

Japanese Language(help)?

Question:

Well I have learn in making this sentence:

Shukudai o motte kuru no o wasuremashita

My question is can we use other verb than "wasuremasu"(because in my textbook only give example with "wasuremasu" only)

If I can,what if I wanted to use "sumimasu"(live):

Watashi wa tokoro no chikaku ni umi ga aru no o sunde imasu

Should I use the particle "o" in the sentence or should I replace it with "ni".

Thanks

Answer:

Hi, I'm Japanese.

There's no verb than "wasuremasu" and "wasuremasita".

"Syukudai o motte kuru no o wasuremahita"

is

"I didn't bring my homework"

Otherwise,

"Syukudai o shite imasenn"

and

"Syukudai o suru no o wasuremashita"

is

"I didn't do my homework"

"Watashi wa --- ni sumimasu"

means "I'm going to live ---" (or "I will live in ---")

"Watashi wa --- ni sunde imasu" means "I live in ---"

Yes, you should replace and remove words.

"Watashi wa tokoro no chikaku ni umi ga aru no o sunde imasu"

changes to

"Watashi wa umi ga chikaku ni aru tokoro ni sunde imasu"

What Jobs can a foreigner get in Japan?

I've heard teaching english is a great Job, but can you tell me other stuff that could also be good? What if I know how to repair cars? Is it usefull?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:

In most cases in order to work full time in Japan you need to have a University degree and you also require the backing of a company in Japan to sponsor your visa.

The most common form of employment among foreigners is teaching English. Other fields that qualified residents have a good chance to find work include translation, IT, modeling and entertainment.

How to make friends in Japan?

Question:

I'll admit- I epitomize every bad false stereotypes that the USA has. I'm 180lbs, 5'6", faire haired, and love anime - I mean I love Japanese culture of course! But anime sparked it. I'm always in my cosplay outfits ;) ! And I'm not ashamed to say I'm super excited about meeting more people who are accepting of me in japan !3! Because god knows I'm seem as a "freak" in the USA. :( just because I'm more Japanese-y than American..

Anyways I Just don't want people to think ALL Americans are fat, tall, blonde, or love anime because honestly most people are not- I'm obese in the USA I know it.. I'm scared people (other gaiijin) will hate me in japan? I'm scared they will say "your whats making gaiijin look bad in japan, etc) ... How do i calm my fears?

Also how will Japanese view me? I'm extremely shy and never talk to someone first ><;; Baka Julie Baka ... Haa... But do you think I can make many Japanese friends ? -- I'm staying in japan 4 years from next week!! I'll be in Tokyo ~ and I plan to get a job as a translator in japan after graduating- so I want to make a good first impession?

Answer:

Hmmm, if they said 'your whats making gaijin look bad in Japan' they would probably be able to write it without grammatical errors also.

What can you do to solve the 'fat, tall, blonde and love anime' thing.

Go on a diet, exercise and lose weight..... fat problem solved.
Cut off your feet...... tall problem solved.
Dye your hair.......blonde problem solved.
Love anine....... get some serious counseling, my man, some serious counseling.

But this 'staying in Japan 4 years from next week'.....

If you mean that you are going to start counting the four years from next week that you will move to Japan. That part will work. Count all you like. No problem there.

If you mean you are coming next week and plan to stay for 4 years, plan again. Because if you don't HAVE a job as a translator already you won't be staying for more than 90 days. You can look for a good on the sly but I doubt you will find anything. My wife is a translator. She went to school to do so. She has almost all of her work as a result of getting her foot in the door from introductions made by the school to potential clients.

This PIPEDREAM has been popped.

NOTE: Changing your screen name didn't change the fact that you were on my block list. Don't know who you used to be, but I smell a troll.

Can someone please translate this english email to japanese please?

Question:

Do Japanese people like Australians?

Question:

One day I hope to travel to japan. I have plenty of Japanese friends that have apartments in Tokyo. I don't know Japanese but I'm going to take classes. But I heard Japanese people will sometimes say no to helping foreigners because they are scared?

Answer:

I am a Japanese and live in Australia. Compare to Australian, Japanese people are not friendly. A lot of them are shy to speak other languages but if you try to talk to them in Japaese, most people are happy to help you. Also some want to speak or practice English. People smile and greet without knowing each other at work or street in losts of places in Australia but Japanese don't smile to "stranger" because it is different life style etc...But Japanese people like helping each other too. Don't hasitate asking them help if you need one.

How much the ticket going philippines to japan?

Question:

for travel

Answer:

If you want to get a non-stop flight from Manila to Tokyo, there are 3 main airlines that do it - Japan Airlines (JL), Air Nippon (NH) and Philippine Airlines (PR). You don't write when exactly you're planning this trip, or for how long you want your ticket valid for. But for a Japanese airline, you can get a 1 week ticket round-trip including taxes for about USD$690. A 2 week ticket is about $740, a one-month ticket
is about $530, and a 3 month ticket for about $840.
If you want to try PR then it's probably a bit cheaper.

How to be accepted in japan once and for all?

Question:

I am a 35 year old American citizen woman who moved to japan 15 years ago. I also lived in japan from the age of 3~7. My husband is Japanese, my children are Japanese. I consider myself Japanese although I'm not of Japanese ansestry. I'm currently waiting on my Japanese citizenship to go through (almost!), I know Japanese culture more than American culture, I speak Japanese fluently and I only speak English at work (as I'm a teacher). I'm sick and tired of still being called a foreigner even by my closest friends, my son came home the other day crying saying someone called him a foreigner and that just pissed me off to no end! He's not even been to the USA before! He's Japanese through and through. Occasionally I am stopped by a police asking for a passport in English. I lecture them every time as well as all people who judge me as a foreigner, and they apologize but I feel they dont really understand.

I don't accept that being called a foreigner simply because I am Japanese now- I even judge foreigners and want most of them out of japan, not because they are foreign but because they don't try to assimilae to Japanese life.

I'm getting extremely stressed, maybe because I'm pregnant again haha but please help with any advise. Thank you!

Answer:

You consider yourself Japanese. That's sweet. But you're not. And for whatever reason, that makes a difference to the Japanese people. Live with it because it is NOT going to change. It's that simple. More than that, you are ignoring the truth. You are NOT Japanese.

As for other kids teasing your child, maybe your kid is picking up some vibes from you and passing them around. I have two kids and they both say they have never had such problems. At the most they heard some comments by 'some weird kids'. Wanna' hear strange. Their Japanese grandmother told my youngest girl that she, my daughter, wasn't American but Japanese. Pissed my daughter off. Of course she wants to leave Japan now and go to school in the U.S. Things aren't such a bowl of cherries here in Japan at times, huh? Safe though. It does have that going for it. It'd take me a while to think of something else.
