What is it like in Japan?

Question:

I am going to Japan over the summet and I was wondering about the things that are there. Thanks!!

Answer:

It really depends on which part of Japan you visit. Hokkaido can be very different to say Honshu. A lot of Japan is mountainous but there are also many fishing and coastal villages. There are big modern cities as well as small historical villages. The food is amazing and will also vary from region to region. I love Japan for its natural beauty, culture, history, culinary excellence, cool technology and adventure.

Should I walk on the right or left side of the sidewalk in Japan?

Question:

I'm moving to Tokyo but I'm currently in Narita. Where I am in Narita is not very busy, so it is hard to "follow the crowds"... One of my pet peeves in America was left-hand drivers and people who walk on the left side of the sidewalk, so I really don't want to bother people by making it hard to pass me! T_T And is it different in other parts of Japan?

Thanks!

Answer:

If there is no sidewalk you should walk on the right side of the street in order to face oncoming cars.
If there is a sidewalk you should walk on the left as that way the person on the edge of the sidewalk will be facing the oncoming cars.
@kazuto, The law says that bicycle must ride on the left side of the street if there is no sidewalk, like any other vehicle.

What's the difference in Peruvian ceviche and Mexican ceviche?

Question:

I have eaten it in Peru but have only heard about it since being back in America that Mexicans make a form of it.What's the difference?I would like to try the Mexican version but have not seen it in any Mexican restaurants here.

Answer:

In Peru, ceviche has been declared to be part of Peru's "national heritage" and has even had a holiday declared in its honor.[22] The classic Peruvian ceviche is composed of chunks of raw fish, marinated in freshly squeezed key lime or bitter orange (naranja agria) juice, with sliced onions, chili, salt and pepper. Corvina or Cebo (sea bass) was the fish traditionally used. The mixture was traditionally marinated for several hours and served at room temperature with chunks of corn-on-the-cob, and slices of cooked sweet potato. Regional or contemporary variations include garlic, minced Peruvian ají limo, or the Andean chilli rocoto, toasted corn or "cancha" and yuyo (seaweed). A specialty of Trujillo is ceviche prepared from shark (tollo or tojo). Lenguado (sole) is often used in Lima. The modern version of Peruvian ceviche, which is similar to the method used in making Japanese sashimi, consists of fish marinated for a few minutes and served promptly. It was created by the now deceased Peruvian-Japanese chef Dario Matsufuji, during the 1970s. Many Peruvian cevicherías serve a small glass of the marinade (as an appetizer) along with the fish, which is called leche de tigre or leche de pantera.

In Mexico and other parts of Central America, it is served in cocktail cups with tostadas, or as a tostada topping and taco filling. Shrimp, octopus, squid, tuna, and mackerel are popular bases for Mexican ceviche. The marinade ingredients include salt, lime, onion, chile, avocado, and coriander (known as cilantro in the Americas). Tomatoes are often added to the preparation. According to the book "Mexico One Plate At A Time," even though the dish has been a part of traditional Mexican coastal cuisine for centuries, ceviche is not a dish native to Mexico.[14] Despite this, Mexican ceviche has developed its own distinct styles that make it unique from the other variations available.[14]

In short..
Peruvian ceviche: Raw fish, citrus dressing, onions, chili, salt, pepper, side dishes (sweet potatoes, corn, garlic, seaweed etc.)
Mexican ceviche: Served as a tostada topping/filling/cocktail, raw seafood, lime, salt, pepper, chile, avocado, cilantro aka coriander , tomatoes.

Peruvian: Fish only, side dishes.
Mexican: Incl. other seafoods, avocado, cilantro and tomatoes.

Yup.

Thai food in Japan (Why does my stomach always hurt more than usual)?

Question:

I have a generally sound stomach and I can easily eat most spicy food without having a problem. Since I moved to Japan I notice that every time I eat Thai food, the next morning is a 1 hour hell in the bathroom.

The weird thing is that I went to Thailand and my stomach was fine for most of the trip. This also never happened in America. It just feels like a normal upset stomach but then when I go to the bathroom my butt is on fire! Is there some spice that they may be using as a substitute for something hard to find in Japan?

Is this really right in japanese?

Question:

im trying to practice this right now im studying the grades and responding my favorite food is.. or my favorite color is..... but i tried saying this for example watashi wa hachi nen sei imasu would i put imasu or desu ? and another one i put is watashi no suki na tabemono wa spaghetti desu and watashi no suki na iro wa pinku, kuro,to shiro desu correct me please im still learning and please don't confuse me please

Answer:

>watashi wa hachi nen sei imasu
We do not say "hachi nensei" if you want to say "8th grade". We have 6-3-3 grade system in which we say 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each school.

So we would say "watashi wa chugaku ninensei ni imasu". You need to put "ni" before imasu.

>watashi no suki na tabemono wa spaghetti desu

This is correct.

>watashi no suki na iro wa pinku, kuro,to shiro desu

This is also correct.

How to get a job in Tokyo if you are coming from Hong Kong?

Question:

My boyfriend lives in Hong Kong. He will soon come to where I live, NYC, and we will go to Tokyo together. He wants to get a job in Tokyo, he's never worked there before. What does he need to get a job there, and what are some average jobs for him around the Shibuya/Shinjuku/Harajuku areas?

Answer:

Well it depends on his qualifications.

1. Does he have a bachelor's degree?
>No bachelors degree, odds are no job because they can't sponsor him a working type visa.

2. Does he speak Japanese?
>Helps somewhat.

3. What are his job skills, work experience, what did he do in Hong Kong?
>Experience in a field helps.

4. What will you be doing in Tokyo?

5. Since you cannot just move to Japan and start working it is quite difficult to say what job he can find. There is no visa to just work in a cafe or restaurant.

I'm going to Japan for vacation, would I be considered fat?

Question:

I'm about 5"4, maybe a little more and weigh around 128 lbs. My waist is around 29 inches and my hips 35 inches. I'm trying to get down to 115-120. I have some time, we're going in spring break.

I don't really want to be fat there since I've seen some Japanese stores online and the clothes are really adorable. And small.
Yeah.

sooo

Answer:

Welcome to MOSQUE, the Ministry Of Silly QUEStions. Your question has been plopped on our desk for a very, very obvious reason.

We do really hate to answer a question with a question, but it truly is instructive. That being "Who really gives a flying sexual intercourse about your weight/height ratio?"

If you really don't want to be fat in Japan, wait while I poll others in the office..........

They all said lose some weight.

Wait again.......

Everyone said that they do not CARE what weight you want to get down to because facts say, and have said, and will always say, that simply wanting to slim down means squat. Zero.

This just in from the other desks......

It doesn't make any difference at all about sizes in Japan because you will have what is called a 'suitcase'. That 'suitcase' will contain clothes that actually fit your body.

If you really don't want to be fat, go on a diet. Otherwise.... wait......

Office of MOSQUE.....

1- You are at least a bit chubby.
2- You are not going to do anything about it.
3- Therefore, deal with it.

Where can I get Unagi pie?

Question:

Is there any website where I can get Unagi pie to Europe?

Answer:

Shunkado, the maker of Unagi pie, stopped online order for Unagi pie, even in Japan.
I'm not sure why. But they said "because Unaigi pie is too fragile during transportation".

You might have to find someone who buy and send you personally.

@thecheapest902
Did you check the name of that snack? At least, you were not born in Hamamatsu.
Your one is "土用の丑のパイ"(=Doyou no ushi no pie), a kind of fake Unagi pie.
Well, they say they are using eel extract(?) for that pie. That can't be a REAL Unagi pie at all.

How politely should I speak with my Japanese family when I visit?

Question:

I'm visiting the Japanese side of my family in a few weeks. This includes my grandmother, aunt, and three cousins, which are my age and older. I spent many summers there as a child but the last time I saw them was when I was 16 which was 7 years ago. Up to that point, we spoke in a casual manner, especially with my cousins (i.e. "nanka tabeyou!" instead of "nanika tabemashou ka?").

My question is, as an adult that hasn't seen them since childhood/adolescence, should I continue to speak to my family in a casual manner (i.e. taberu), or should I speak with the standard long form (tabemasu, "desu" form, etc).

Also, I will be meeting other, older family members I probably met once when I was very small. Should i speak standard long form (i.e. ikimasuka?) or should I speak extra politely (i.e. irasshaimasuka?)

(Sorry if any of my Japanese is incorrect, my Japanese is only okay.)

Answer:

You can talk to your cousins in casual form.

On aunt and grandmother, talk to them in "standard long form" (But we do not call it that way in fact).

You don't need to use "extra polite" form because it's mainly for business use.

Flight time from Seoul To Tokyo, japan?

Do you know of any American distributers of Mochi?

Question:

I LOVE mochi after my friend's sister brought some back from South Korea. Do you know how an American lad can get his hands on some?

Answer:

Daifuku mochi just means filled mochi. It can be filled with anything you like! Mochi is the rice dough around the red bean paste. Mochi is also enjoyed other ways - cut into squares and steamed, or baked, or even cooked in a waffle iron!

If you have an Asian market in your town, you may be able to get frozen ones. If there is a Japanese or Korean bakery, they may make fresh ones. And you can almost certainly find the mochi treats filled with ice cream in any Asian market! You can also probably get either the bean paste ones or the ice cream filled ones for dessert at a Japanese or Korean restaurant.

It is not terribly hard to make your own, though.

Make the filling first, and have it ready before you begin the dough. Or buy premade sweet red bean paste. In Japanese, it is called anko.

For the dough, you need glutinous rice flour. You can find it in any Asian market. A popular brand is Mochiko.

There are lots of recipes online for making the dough. Most use microwaves. I don't have a microwave, so I used my rice cooker to cook the dough and it worked great.

Mix, steam, and cool the dough on a board with potato starch to prevent sticking. Then portion it out. Fill each piece with filling, and dust with something so it doesn't stick - powdered sugar, toasted glutinous rice flour, potato starch, or shredded coconut all work. Set seam side down on a plate and let cool and set completely. Then devour them all!

Bean paste filling recipe:

Mochi recipe:

And this last one is particularly good, and really explains how to do it!

Do japanese girls only care about money and looks?

Question:

Seems like its normal for them to use their looks for money and not actually work. Hostess bars, porn, snack bars, maid cafes, almost anything u could think of. Do girls in japan make more money with looks or brains? I see these young girls using old men for their money, taking them out to eat, shopping sprees, vacations.... People wbo see them think its their daughter but really they aren't. Is it ok for young girls to be slutty money whores in japan?

Answer:

It's not normal, but it does happen. It happens in every country in the world. "Sugar daddy" is an American term, isn't it ?
Who is using whom ?

Japanese train-related vocabulary: Could you describe to me what kinds of trains/cars these are?

Question:

I am VERY VERY confused right now.

What is the difference between a 寝台急行 and a 寝台列車?

What is the difference エル特急 and 特別急行列車 and what does エル mean?

Do the terms 普通車の全車両が指定席 普通車の一部車両が指定席 mean that you have to reserve seats on all or some of the carriages for local trains?

Does 発車または到着番線 (used to describe the symbol that has a number within a circle) mean "Stops the train will not stop at" or "The train will only stop at these stops?" Or is it something else?

Explain in English and Japanese if it's easier for you

Answer:

>What is the difference between a 寝台急行 and a 寝台列車?

急行 is express train. So 寝台急行 is express night train. 寝台列車 is all night trains including 寝台急行.

>What is the difference エル特急 and 特別急行列車 and what does エル mean?

特別急行列車 is 特急 which means limited express train. It's faster than 急行 express.

エル特急 exists only in Japan. This エル means "L". But there is no meaning in that. It's used for major limited express trains.

>Do the terms 普通車の全車両が指定席

This means all cars are reserved seat cars. 普通車 means normal cars. So it does not include グリーン車 green car which is like 1st class because it goes without saying that all seats in green cars are reserved.

>普通車の一部車両が指定席

This means some cars are reserved seat cars.

>発車または到着番線

This means "platform where trains arrive or depart from". The number is platform number.

Who you think is the most attractive Japanese idol? (actress, model, singer)?

Question:

Im an American, & recently I've been learning about Ayumi Hamsaki.
happy bday to her today!

Anyways, is the prettiest of what?

Answer:

i don't think Ayumi Hamasaki is the best looking of Japanese.

My avatar is Sasaki Nozomi, Japanese idol.

She is one of popular Japanese actresses/models and has good reputations about her appearance. And she is also famous with her natural beauty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jAKZvJG9…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elTasdwNo…

AKB48 is also popular(most popular) in Japan but their concept of selling is beautiful and cute girls who are likely to be near us. Because the concept of the group is so, they are not considered as very beautiful people.

btw but I like Kojima Haruna in AKB48. She also has a good reputation about her appearance to somewhat.

I don't know. Want to know why? Because I'm a contributor in Travel Japan. and questions like these don't belong here. And I don't care about celebrities and whatnot but, despite Megan Fox being highly overrated, she looks a whole lot better than this Ayumi person. Give me thumbs down if you wish.

Are Japanese racists?

Question:

In general, do the Japanese want to yell Gaijin, go home, and hate or dislike foreigners? I've been to Tokyo once, and I only received a very warm first impression. Where ever I went, people were very nice and polite to me. I got lots of attention and I loved it. I feel so lonely in general, and having people bumping into me, smiling at me (more than usual), trying to speak Japanese to me, is just flattering. But in such places as youtube lots of people are talking about the negative attitude the Japanese have. What is the truth?

Answer:

The facade of politeness is normal in Japan. They overtly show restraint and control especially the older people. No matter how they dislike a person they will be poised and stoic to foreigners. They will receive you warmly and politely. This is the way they are. To lose control and composure and yell "out go home Gaijin" is un-japanese and dishonorable.

In answer to your question, no not all Japanese are racist just like not all French are racist or any other people for that matter. However, unlike other countries, in Japan you would not be able to tell who is racist or not in the elder generation because by custom they are very restraining and polite people. They will go out of their way to be nice while keeping their head high because image and honor is very important to them.

Only the younger Japanese generation will openly show their dislike and blurt out racist comments and such. Some of the newer generation do not respect the same tradition like the elders and some even join hate group.

Shortest way of writing "death wish" in Japanese?

Question:

I want to name a character in a project of mine "Deathwish" as one word; it's fairly easy to translate into Romanized languages, but I was wondering what the shortest way of writing it as a name would be in Japanese. I understand this would mean "death wish": 死の願い , but that seems a bit long for a name.

Answer:

You can't use it as a name because it's such an ominous word that Japanese don't use it.

Neither 死の願い not 死願 are good as a name. It's awkward.

Do they have Japanese language courses in Japan for international students?

Question:

Kinda like when people come to America or England to study English, does Japan have schools for people who want to learn Japanese

Answer:

There are many Japanese language institutes. In these places, you can learn Japanese up to 8 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week. They are expensive - maybe $10,000 a year or more for tuition. If you want to become very fluent in Japanese, bank on about a year in such a institute.

If you are already a college student, why not ask your school if they have a transfer agreement with a Japanese university. Universities also have language programs for exchange students etc.

Why so many Japanese tourists go to Greece every year?

Question:

The Japanese tourist with the came around his neck in the downtown of Athens and especially in Acropolis area is like a sightseeing itself in Greece for the last 30-40 years. Is it love for Greece or what? Almost 2 million Japanese tourists visit Greece every year, that's a fact.

Answer:

That's only like 1.5% of the Japanese population visiting Greece each year, if your statistics are true.

Considering how famous Athens is around the world, that sounds reasonable to me.

What about stats for other visitors? Maybe the Japanese just stick out to you because there aren't many mongoloids in Greece usually.

Most people around the world study about Ancient Greece. It's impressive, like the Pyramids or the other wonders of the world.

How is life in Tokyo Japan?

Question:

Is it as exciting and flashy that i see in the movies and documentaries?
I am a European lawyer and i would like to move in Tokyo for work. It's easy for a European man to get a job there? Salaries are good? Enlighten me please.

Answer:

I lived about 20 minutes away from Tokyo station by bicycle.
I loved these 4 years. With a bicycle, you can visit so many attractive places. With train, even better. Houses and all sorts of services are crammed up in a narrow area, so I did not need to walk much to live. Food, cleaning, shopping, medicine... I could access all sorts of these with walking and bicycle. People in the recent years are moving to Tokyo area, because it is convenient.
There are a lot of museums, too. But there are really minus aspects. One thing I hated was noise. If you live in the center of Tokyo, you will be hearing siren of ambulance, or a some drunkard shouting at the middle of the night. I always could hear noise from highway a little far apart. The other thing is air. I think air is polluted. And one thing I advise to you. Do not rent an old room. The room may be constructed from asbestos and you may end up inhaling a small amount. Long and repetitive inhaling of even a small amount can be lethal. I hate old rooms. I try to find the rooms constructed after 2001. I think it was late 90's asbestos was banned from construction process. But the newer the better. Now I live about 1 hour on train from Tokyo. It is quiet and air is clean. But not as exciting as Tokyo. If you like downtown, then Tokyo is good. But if you don't like restless life, then you should be careful to find where to live. Other things to consider is the safety : Go to a police station and ask if the town if safe. Probably most areas are peaceful. But just in case. I loved these 4 years in the central Tokyo. But for air and noise reasons, I don't think I can live there again. My opinion. I lived in Ningyocho, which is close to Tokyo station. I know there are quiet areas in Tokyo. But I don't know about these areas. Sorry.
