Is there radiation in California from Japan?

Question:

I am worried about the radiation levels in California but I have no clue where to find out any information on it, I don't know who to trust, where to look, or how to even read the levels (sorry if I'm calling it the wrong thing, I don't know much about it). Is it safe to drink tap water and are there any foods I should avoid? I'm really worried and people are constantly talking about it around me...anyone have any info for me? Thanks!

Answer:

use mineral water, don't eat foods such as sea food or vegetables from the pacific ocean and japan or even countries near there.in usa its not as high as japan but with the winds and the water it can move to there.
take care

What different city does Tokyo resemble?

Question:

Preferably, what WELL-KNOWN city does Tokyo look like (in terms of infrastructure and such), but write whatever answer you want!

Answer:

~~Hong Kong
In my opinion, I think HK and Tokyo has many similarities in terms of environment and city life.

Both are very crowded, has many lights during night, many commercial ads/signs/posters, has shrines or temples within the city, huge shopping malls and open shopping areas, huge fish markets, has parks, has trees or nature in some areas of the city, has ports, etc.

I've never been to New York City but I don't see many similarity at all. I can't imagine Brooklyn looking like Tokyo. Maybe there are a few but not as many as HK.

Coz I'm holding back my love...

Answer:

As you look up at the night sky, you stay quiet because you don't know what to say and a tear drop rolls down the side of your face.

Baby girl you've been shut up(neglected) 24/7, if it was me, I wouldn't make you sad.

Our hands become one and I embrace your heart. Both our wishes are the same and we wish them to the shooting star but we must try to erase our wishes for now. Holding back my love.

Why do you still look at him? I will always be looking at you. This is the sad balance. (of their relationship)

If I tell you how I feel about you, I won't be able to be near you anymore. Stop Crying. (Softly) Just smile. (There will be hope) I'll be waiting.

I know how much I'm not the one you love. I know it and it hurts me alot. I've known from the very start.

I will listen to your voice and stay with you until the sun comes up. Our wishes (feelings) just go past each other and it hurts me alot. Holding back my love.

Important things break easily and is cheap. And I can't say anything cause I'm holding back my love.

The space between us keeps getting bigger. Sentimental story. I will loose you with just one word of "I love you."

*repeat

Baby baby baby...Cause I'm holding back my love...

Fun, Easy to make Japanese decorations for bedroom?

Question:

Looking for Japanese decorations to make or that are cool but cheap!

Im making my room into a Japan type of room, any ideas on what to put in it?

Ive already got:
Wall art, such as: Cherry blossom tree wall sticker, and other wall paintings etc.
Japanese lanterns,
Bonsai tree,

Thats all i could think of.

So im looking for decorations that are fun and not too hard to make, or cheap but still nice.

Answer:

you could buy a large "vase" and make origami stars or hearts and put them in there :)

My pen pal made something like that for me and I still love it sooo much and bring it everywhere :D

MMM you could also make your own stuff using paper mache -- if you want it to dry faster you can take balloons and blow them up and use the mache over it. You can also use a sandwich bag and blow it up and then tie the ends. :) Or put something else inside haha :) Then paint what you have~ <3

Also, you can get a pen holder and decorate the pens japanese style...for instance, you can make small stars or something out of clay or the paper mache (then paint). Then you can glue them around the top :D

Also, if you have a sewing kit and fabric as well as stuffing of some sort (maybe from an old pillow), you can make a pillow shaped like sushi or origami of some sort...maybe even designed after one of your lanterns :D

http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=…

You can buy the above if you would like. They are GORGEOUS (ive seen them in real life), and relatively cheap :D Remember to use sites such as Retailmenot.com to find coupon codes for sites which are selling these~

On that same page is this pic: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http…

You can take branches from outside and use sewing string and go around it with the colors you want as well :D

Good luck and I hope this helps. I bet your room is gonnna be awesome :D

Leaving for Japan on the 17th of April?

Question:

I am leaving for Japan on the 17th for two weeks. I’ll spend 4 days in Tokyo. I’m just wondering if I should choose to detour around Tokyo or not? I know it is safe, I’m not worried about that. I’ve just heard they have food shortages ect, do you think they would really want an annoying tourist hanging around when they are short on resources?

I’d like to support Japan with my tourist dollar, I just don’t want to be more of a hindrance than a help.

Answer:

There are currently no food shortages in Tokyo. Food and water supplies are fine.
Yes I suggest, you do detour after your 4 days in Tokyo so you can see and enjoy more. You need to fully enjoy your 2 weeks stay in Japan.

From Tokyo (after 4 days), you can go to Osaka. There are buses and trains from Tokyo that you can easily ride to Osaka. Trains will be much faster, usually takes 3-4 hours depending on class of train you ride.

Explore Osaka then you can detour to Kyoto or Nara. Both cities are very beautiful with many shrines and temples.

You can buy JR pass for your train travels.

What makes Japan become a developed country at the first place ?

Question:

As far as I know from what I learned from the history,Japan was a poor country, but now,It's probably the most developed country in Asia. What's the secret ?

Answer:

Americans built it? don't make me laugh. The Americans would be responsible for destroying almost all of Japan after WW2.

Japan was a developed country because the Japanese worked hard to develop their country. The Japanese had the vision to see that if they were not to modernize their country, they will be colonized like the rest of Asia by western imperialists.

Vacation in Tokyo, Japan?

Question:

I am a senior high school student and I have never traveled abroad but now I want to vist Tokyo. I want to know everything there is to know about traveling (specifically japan). I want to stay there for maybe a month, if I need to have them, I will bring a parent. Also where is a good place to make native friends my age? Will I need to attend school? If so, how? What are some cool things I can do in Tokyo in spring? (I'm ok with nightlife)

Answer:

Travel around Shinjuku, Shibuya and Minato. There are also some cheap hostels you can stay while in Tokyo. In Harajuku, you can meet some young people, try approaching and talking to them. Some are also interested in anime/manga. But be aware that most natives are not fluent in English. So you have to be friendly and nice in handling conversations for them to like you.
Roppongi is a famous night life area for foreigners. It's expensive there too. If you want karaoke, there are many karaoke bars in Shinjuku. Odaiba is also a worth visiting.

If you want a quick tour of the city, you can ride the sky bus tokyo.

Just grab a Tokyo travel flyer/booklet & enjoy.

Which is the most reliable company for handling excess baggage in Tokyo?

Question:

I was thinking about buying lots of goods in Japan and wanted to know the best place for handling excess baggage? Luggage/items will be sent to Australia.

Answer:

Unless it is a huge amount of stuff or it is oversized/overweight, it is often better to pay the excess baggage fees of the airline rather than by the postal mail system. Alternatively many airlines have cargo
companies as well and it may be cheaper. Do not Fed-Ex them - the cost will be insane.
If you are not in any hurry for the stuff to arrive, then look into consolidated cargo by ship.

Got orders to Misawa AB, what's it like there now?

Question:

We will be reporting there at the end of summer. Before for the earthquake we were so excited. We have no choice of course, but can anyone tell me what its like there now? One thing we were looking forward to a lot was the local fresh food. Not so sure now.

Answer:

The comments here are amazing: http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=1232… A lot of the commenters had lived through a very strong earthquake in the 60s, and shared their experiences.

Facebook also has a page for the air base: http://www.facebook.com/notes.php?id=265…

And you might like to keep an eye on the radiation levels in surrounding prefectures: http://www.mext.go.jp/english/radioactiv…

Misawa is in Aomori prefecture by the way. You might see the prefecture mentioned in one of the English-language newspapers. Here's a link to the Daily Yomiuri: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/

Right now, the worst of the danger is within 10 miles of the Fukushima Power Plant. There may be trace amounts of radiation in Aomori produce, but quite frankly, I think the danger is very low. I think you'd do more damage to your health by NOT eating fresh, vitamin-packed produce than by eating produce that has a very, very low amount of radiation. Remember, in some places, they use radiation to *treat* veggies to help keep them fresh longer.

Enjoy your time in Japan! I was in Misawa-town for a short visit, and loved the Komaki baths! There are still a lot of exciting things about being there.

You know how in anime and manga, girls get groped on the train?

Question:

You know how in anime and manga, girls get groped on a crowded train or bus? Does that really happen in Japan? Because it happens a lot in anime and manga. So i was just wondering.

Answer:

It happens, and it's not uncommon. There's even a name for the men, they're called " chikan ". It's becoming less common as the girls/ women have started to fight back. This will bring shame to the man and his family. During busy times they have women only train cars.

Is Japan an unsafe country to go to?

Question:

I had originally planned on going to Japan as a foreign exchange student in the year 2012-2013 (with a departure in August). Now, the nuclear problem has been raised to a 7 (before it was a 5) which is the highest it can go.
My mom told me that she's not letting me go anymore because the radiation will bad, and it could effect my chances of having kids when I'm older. So, I have to choose a different country.

I had been really set on Japan, it has a beautiful language and culture, so it feels like it's being torn away from me. My mom said that even if my exchange program were to allow me to go, she still probably wouldn't let me because of the levels of radiation and the hazards.

But, if I did go, the chances are most likely I'd get placed down south, and I don't think it's too badly effected down there, though marine life might be slightly unsuitable in that region.

My application has to be submitted (with my country choices) by the end of May. I have to make a decision, so please help me! Thank you!
By the way, I'll be leaving at the end of August in 2012 (I would like to emphasize that) and I'll be in Japan for 10-11 months.

Answer:

I was originally planning to go to an area in china near Japan in june of this year, but now my mother won't let me go anymore. Honestly, i feel that it's not that big of a deal, and I was really put off when our trip was cancled too. Still, i know plenty of people who are still going to China this may, even with the nuclear problems. As for Japan, I've been following the news and they;re saying that as long as you don't go into the evacuation zone (30 km radius, i think) the level of radiation isn't high enough to harm humans. I'm pretty sure that they;ve already blocked off the major leaking point too. Besides, by August of next year I'm sure it will have blown over. The radiation is spreading all over the world, soon it'll be everywhere, and diluted. Chernobyl and those two atomic bombs dropped in Japan in WWII released much more radiation than this leak, but in WWII no one really knew about radiation and just went on with their lives. I think going to Japan as a foreign exchange student would be a once in a life time experience and you shoud definately try to convince your mom. As you know, Japan has a very unique and interesting culture so if it were me I would definately go for it.
Hope this works out :)

Will the radiation from the nuclear explosion in Japan effect the U.S?

Question:

There's that whole big problem with the nuclear plant in Japan. Something about the bombs exploding...I don't really know all the details, but the main part of it all that im scared about is the radiation from the nuclear cloud. How will this effect America? How will it effect America? Has the bomb even exploded anyway! EXPLAIN IT ALL TO ME!

I will chose BEST ANSWER(:

Answer:

If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:
http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fu…

And here is where you find current, factual status information:
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsun…

And a slide presentation that describes the effects:
http://www.slideshare.net/iaea/fukushima…

And here is a chart that helps make sense of the numbers:
http://www.xkcd.com/radiation/

- How will this effect America?

It won't. The amount of radiation leaked was comparatively small. You'll get more radiation from your cellphone or local coal power plant than you ever will from Fukushima.

http://www.epa.gov/rpdweb00/tenorm/coala…
http://www.scientificamerican.com/articl…

- Has the bomb even exploded anyway

Yes, in 1945 two bombs exploded. One in Hiroshima and one in Nagasaki. Nuclear power plants cannot explode (in the atomic bomb sense) because they don't have the right materials to do so. What did happen was that when the overheated fuel created steam and hydrogen, it was vented outside of the containment vessel and the hydrogen explosion damaged the reactor buildings' exterior walls. The exterior walls are not part of the containment system.

Why do Japanese state their reason for everything as "Because I am Japanese"?

Question:

I know not all do this, but it seems like a strange phenomenon...something as simple as, "What's your favorite color?" can be answered, "Blue, but that's because I'm Japanese." Do you like this movie, "Well, you know I am Japanese."

But it will apply to things which honestly have nothing to do with Japanese lol

Why is this? Thanks!

Answer:

I dunno. I was extremely nervous because of what happened the other day.
People blamed me for not making sense. The same people asked me "why?" again. The best reasoning I could come up with was "because I am Japanese!"

Living and going to school in Tokyo?

Question:

I've decieded to save my money from my part time job and plan a vist to japan for 30 days. I also want to go to a high school (Sr. Year) so I can study a little while I'm there and make some friends. How do I plan this out? I've looked at apartment rentals for 1 month and round trip flights for the dates that I want.

Answer:

You just can't barge in here in Japan and study, with a tourist visa. Haha!! You should apply for a student visa if you want to study in Japan. And you should be fluent in Japanese enough to understand the discussions and lecture because they won't translate the whole thing just for you. And just for 30 day? Omg.

You can be atleast just a tourist and enjoy Tokyo. It will be hard to find apartments to rent for tourist, but there are tourist houses you can rent for 1 month.

Try this site:
http://www.sakura-house.com/

Guest house is different from apartment. Guest houses are perfect for tourist like you deciding to stay in Japan for atleast a month. They also offer dormitories or hostels if you want a room mate.

After so many disasters and chaos in the past few months or so, do you think Japan would eventually just sink?

Question:

it's an island nation, a tiny one at that, it's really not that inconceivable to imagine the whole island sinking....

Answer:

Depends what you mean by sinking and what you mean by eventually. Eventually (in millions of years) all the current landmasses will have been changed and moved beyond recognition. Mountain ranges will have been weathered and eroded flat, flat land will turn into mountains due to tectonic plate collisions, volcanos will create new islands... Sea levels will rise and fall, exposing or submerging land, some land will be subducted into the mantle (inside the earth). Islands will become parts of massive continents and today's massive continents will be ripped apart.

In the short term it's not going to just sink, that's not what happens, as it's not floating on top of the sea.

Where can I see satellite shots of the 3 times the size of Britain flotsam heading from Japan to America?

Question:

Read a newspaper report that the tsunami swept out to sea immense amounts of debris that is three times the size of Britain, and it's slowly heading for the American Pacific coast. Surely there are photos as this has been declared a great danger to shipping? And will any Pacific islands be in its path?

Answer:

Here's one link....

http://www.salon.com/wires/allwires/2011…

You can find some more by Googling "Japanese tsunami flotsam", though I didn't read anything regarding the size as being what you described. It did say it could take 1-3 years to arrive on the U.S. North Pacific coast.

Are Japanese only racist towards a specific type of people?

Question:

Both my friends( Australian and Egyptain) went there about a year ago, same flights/hotels but they both had different experience , as the Egyptain felt VERY welcomed while the other one felt the exact opposite. Is it that you like Egyptains/hate Australians ?? 'cause on blogs people keep saying how Japanese are racist to everyone(i don't believe so).
Please verify :)

Answer:

So you mean to say, your Aussie friend was discriminated the whole time he stayed in Japan? the whole freaking time???

You see, when someone experiences something bad in a certain country, they tend to talk to it to everybody. They make is so much of a big deal, they create warnings and then scares other people. But that doesn't mean we're all (Japanese) racist to all Australians.

But when someone experiences good, they just share it to few and forget about it. You see the irony?

Can you please translate this to japanese?

Question:

I will be going to Japan from the middle of May to the middle of June. I will be in Tokyo. I was wondering if I should go or not. I'm concerned about the radiation contamination of the food there. I heard I cannot eat seafood. I was curious to know what other people would suggest. My other option is to wait til September. This is a opportunity of a life time as my expenses are all paid for. I really want to go but with all this radiation talk, I'm a bit concerned. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:

There are no contaminated food or water being sold or served in Tokyo. The government is doing a good job in controlling food that manufactured or grown in Fukushima prefecture. It's safe in Tokyo. I'll be also going there in Tokyo this May 15th so see you there lol.

Will any tv stations in japan show the royal wedding on April 29?

Question:

I don't watch tv much so I'm not familiar with the stations. Is there an online schedule where I could check?

Answer:

The British may not be too excited about this but everyone else is (especially the Americans) The Japanese will have a presence there too (they have already paid for this - remember it costs millions to broadcast the rights) maybe they will be represented by NHK? Either way check their schedules online. I think but not certain that the BBC News will be offering live streaming for everyone - have a look at that as well

How do i help with the relief in japan?

Question:

i have always been passionate about japan. it has always been my lifes dream to live in japan and since the disaster i just want to help. i dont feel like its enough to just donate ten dollars on my phone bill to the red cross i want to go there and make an actual difference. any ideas how

Answer:

I read your Q twice.
Your "passion for living in Japan" should not be connected to "the relief" this time.
Take another opportunity, after studying Japanese, gaining some skills etc.

There's no "relief/volunteering visa" to be issued to you (as individual)

What foods should I eat/avoid to help reduce effects of radiation when I go to Tokyo in a couple of weeks?

Question:

I'm due to go to Tokyo for 2 weeks, and have heard that radiation has contaminated some foods. I'm worried about radioactive isotopes being absorbed by my body so was wondering if anyone knew which foods I should avoid, or if there is anything I can take/eat that helps counteract any possible effects? I will probably try not to eat seafood or milk, and will drink green tea because I've heard that the antioxidants help absorb free radicals, but any other suggestions would be good. Thanks.

Answer:

Japanese people are really super-consumers when it comes to food safety, and I don't think any radioactive food will make it to the grocery stores, let alone the restaurants. I think those farmers are having to dump their produce and milk.

If you want to play it extra safe, don't eat any seafood. (Sob, are you sure you want to play it that safe? Japanese cuisine is very famous for seafood, and *probably* a couple of meals wouldn't be any more dangerous to your long term health than sitting in a smoky bar for a couple of nights.) Eat stuff with iodine in it, not actual iodine. Seaweed and that sort of things was probably harvested MONTHS ago, and should be perfectly safe.

Also, educate yourself. What are the levels of radiation reported? What is a dangerous radiation level? Keep an eye on the news to see if there are further problems with the nuclear plants, and if the wind is bringing more crap south.

In general, though, Tokyo should be quite safe to your long-term health.

Japanese people: would you say learning English was difficult for you?

Question:

Did you find learning English was difficult? I know all languages are difficult to learn and all, but I wanted to know from a Japanese person's point of view. I've been studying Japanese for a little bit, and I've always been curious. It seems really difficult learning English, especially from a Japanese person's point of view. Did it take you ages to learn? It's just curiosity :D I find Japanese quite hard :S

Answer:

I think it just matters if you are interested in languages/culture or not.
I myself was good in school days (especially junior-high), having good marks without reviewing what I had learned at school. But when it came to "conversation" later on, I had to change my school text books to practical ones. When I first went to the states, I was amazed by native speaker's speed, and barely communicated with them.
Japanese is one of the most difficult languages, I agree. It's not so flexible/practical as English.

Questions about Japanese schools?

Question:

I have some questions and requests about Japan (schools).
Please answer as many as you can. Your answers are much appreciated. :D

-Why are most japanese high schools big?
-How big (generally) is a typical public and private school in japan?
-What do japanese school look inside and outside?
-Where are schools typically located? (Near residential areas, urban areas, or etc.?)
-What usually surrounds most schools? (Houses, buildings, trees or etc.?)

-Can you please give me pictures or sites wherein I could see what japanese school looks like inside and out?
-Can you give an overview map for japanese high schools?

Extra question: Why are there so many trees in Japan?

Please help. Thank you! :)

Answer:

according to Wiki, there are 446 high schools in Tokyo, both private and public. and over 5000 schools in Japan.

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%9D%B1%E…

(this is in tokyo)
i know it is in Japanese, but its easy to figure out...
you can click on some of the school to see pictures of the buildings.

http://www.schoolnavi-jp.com/sh/sh-index…

you can see on this site about schools in each prefecture.
when you click on each school, it will take you to the school's official homepage where you can see some pictures.

schools will be located mostly residential area, because public school students normally ride bikes to school. surroundings may vary, if you are in urban area, buildings and houses may be around more than countrysides where there are less population and houses.

the reason why Japan has many trees: because we are team "GO GREEN." :)

hope it helped you to find your answer~.

I am American. If a Japanese person buys me an iphone, do I need them to pay my monthly bill?

Question:

Hi...

If I will be in Japan 1 year...I need a phone. I heard that foreigners are only allowed to rent phones (which are a ripoff). I want my own phone. If I ask a Japanese person to buy me the iphone, do I need to rely on this person to pay my monthly bills...

How do I get a cool cellphone in Japan?

Thank you!

Answer:

Sally you need to a grip firmly in reality. Why would a Japanese (stranger) buy you a phone and pay your monthly bills? does this happen anywhere else? If you have the right phone, you can get it unlocked and use it on a PAYG basis or contract (which you pay yourself)

Try this: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2223.html

What cellphones can I use in Japan?

Question:

I am a bit confused...I heard the iphone, but I would have to pay $25 just to use it in Japan :/...so it would be around $70 per month just to have the phone...not even to use it :/

I also heard CDMA and WCDMA phones which sound more reasonable.

But then, I also heard that you just buy an unlocked phone and use an international sim card (bought online).

I have no idea which I am supposed to do lol o__o

I live in the U.S. now, but would like to buy a phone in the United States that I could use in Japan as well. I don't want to rent because I will live there for 1 year, and although I dont use my phone that much (maybe text 3 times per day, and spend 30 minutes on phone per day) I am a student so I need a phone to text/call friends.

I checked online and found some things...but I got very confused...I want a cool phone with lots of features...the iphone is very expensive, so maybe a different touch phone or a blackberry ^.^

Thank you!!! :)

Answer:

Basically, you can't buy an iPhone in US and bring to Japan and use it.

You have to buy a phone in Japan if you want to use it in Japan. And they are selling iPhone in Japan.
