Why didn't the Japanese leave Manila during the end of war?

Question:

Why didn't the Japanese soliders leave Manila when they have declared it to be an open city? When you declare a city as open, you try to preserve the buildings, monuments, etc from further damage. But they didn't leave, thus forcing the Americans to siege the city instead of going to street combat.

Isn't that the same as taking a whole city hostage? Has the japs apologized for this one particular incident?

Answer:

I know a lot about this, it is known as the Manila Massacre. However anything I say the Japanese ninjas here will assassinate my answer.

So I will just say that Japanese conduct of war is different to what you think.

Suica and NEX card confusion?

Question:

I'm confused about the Suica and NEX rail pass.

The NEX pass is only good for the trip from Narita Airport into Tokyo is that right?

And the Suica card is good for all other subway, trains and buses in Tokyo (except for Shinkansen) right? But what's the 1500 credit on the Suica card? Does the subway fare get deducted from this 1500 credit or is this just to buy items in snack machines and/or shops?

And on the JREast website it says that you can't buy the Suica & NEX overseas, so does that mean I have to wait to buy the pass there? What happens if the NEX is all booked up?

Any advice would be appreciated. :-)

Answer:

Let me clear it up for you:

It is a Suica & NEX deal.

You get a SUICA CARD and a NEX TICKET.

You use the NEX ticket to ride the Narita Express train from Narita Airport to whatever JR station you want in Tokyo.

You use the SUICA CARD for any other train travel you do. This can be JR trains, subway trains, buses, whatever.

The Suica card has 1500yen loaded onto it, each time you ride the train, subway, buy something at a vending machine, store etc and use the card, money is deducted (like a debit card) from the Suica card. How much money deducted depends on the cost of the train ride or the thing you are buying. If you run out of money, you recharge the Suica card at any vending machine.

You buy the Suica & NEX package IN Japan, they need to check your passport.
The NEX RARELY sells out. If it sells out, then get on the next NEX train, or take an airport limousine bus, or take an alternate train like the keisei skyliner into Tokyo. Again the NEX rarely sells out, so it's not something to worry about.

10 pts. "Japanese"....?

Question:

Why can some questions be asked without using "desu ka" at the end?

Answer:

Sometimes the right inflection can make it a question, just like in English.

'Kai' and 'no' are often used as question words instead of 'ka'.

As for 'desu' it is not always necessary or correct to use 'desu' in the sentence so people often don't need it in a question where there is another verb.

I think I may be wapanese?

Question:

Alright, so the Japanese hate us, but I am not being racist. I have read countless text books about Japan, I know Japanese, and I know not all Japanese are martial artists, otaku, skinny, etc. Am I racist?
I have wanted to go to Japan ever since I was young and even knew what racism was. I've also always wanted to be Japanese, am I being a racist wannabe?

Answer:

Most Japanese don't know who wapanese are. Very few of them actually live in Japan. And Japanese medias do not talk about them. So you don't have to mind what Japanese think.

How do you say this in informal japanese?

Question:

How do you say "I don't know" or "I wonder.." in japanese?
I tried to look this up on Google, but I couldn't find the phrase/word I was looking for.

Like, if someone asks you "What are you going to do tonight?" and you don't know, so you say "Hm.. I wonder" or "I don't know". Not "shiranai/shirimasen", but another word.. It's kind of hard to explain O__o"

I'd like to know how to say this in an informal way, but not so rude that you can't use it in a daily conversation with friends and so on. If you know the formal way of saying it, please tell me that as well ^^

Thanks!

Answer:

It really depends on what kind of question they are asking you.

If they asked you "What are you going to do tonight?" and you don't know (which means you are just thinking about what you are going to do this evening right?) then Japanese people usually answer with such phrases as "Mada kimatte imasen" (= I haven't decided it yet) or "Dou shi yo kana" (same meaning, but sounds more natural and girly and informal)

Just look at the enticing question, you!?

Question:

I am teaching myself many common words in Nihongo, and that is going well. But the real task is reading and writing. I figure since a lot is written in Hiragana and even English, I might do well enough knowing those. Learning Kanji seems, haaaaaaaaaaaaard, so my question is, how well could I get off knowing Hiragana and a bit of Kanji in Hongo?

Answer:

Well, I've learned Hiragana and Katakana. It seems you know what Hiragana is and Katakana is what they use to write out words of foreign origin. I haven't learned any Kanji yet (kinda scary!) But I've noticed that alot of places have the Hiragana written above the Kanji so I can still figure it out. I say learn Hiragana and Katakana then slowly work on Kanji as you feel comfortable. ^_^ Good luck!

How do you pronounce vowels that are together?

Question:

In Nihongo, some vowels put together make different sounds. Houkou for direction is pronounced ho-ko. But then in hai, the a+i sounds like the american letter I.
I think I'm getting close to good conclusions, but I would like to know when two vowels together make a different sound.
ください
どうも =^_^=

Answer:

yup you are right.

They generally follow the rule you have formed.

Other 2 vowel combinations I can think of are:

a+e as in まちがえ(machigae)
=>this is pretty straightforward, prounounced as ma-chi-ga-eh

and

o+o as in おおい(ooi)
=> pronounced as "ohhh E" (I don't quite know how to describe this)

another one is

i+i as in かわいい(kawaii)
=>pronounced as ka wa E--

Hope that helps. *actually google translate has pretty good pronunciation I,believe, not translation though, so you could type the words there if you don't know how to pronounce them and listen*

EDIT:
btw, it would be better if you use よろしくおねがいします。instead at the end of your post. =)

EDIT2:
Just thought of 2 more combination.

e+i as in よてい(yotei)
=>pronounced as "yo tear"

and

u+e as in うえ(ue)
=>pronounced as "oo eh"

Do Japanese get annoyed with Chinese tourists?

Question:

On one hand they are spending money as if it grows on trees. However, do Japanese people dislike them because they speak very loud and do not know certain Japanese customs?

Do some Japanese get annoyed when they see increasing public signs written in Chinese for the Chinese tourists?

Answer:

Personally, I think that they (maybe only one person) cause more annoyance on this forum.

But to answer your question, I think it would be a bit annoying for the general population of any culture to see their customs violated by visitors.

I have to send a package to Japan. I got an address, but I don't know the correct format for sending:?

Question:

This is all I got for an adress. How Do I up it into the right adress format to send to Japan?

74 chome no 3 Ousho nakatou Amagasaki City Hyogo Ken

Answer:

This address is not enough. I think you have to ask the person again to make sure that it's correct.

Addition:
You must have 3 numbers for this address. But you have only 2, "74" and "3" here. So you are missing another one.

And you are missing postal code, too. But we can check it on Japanese web for you. The more important thing is the 3rd number.

Addition2:
Postal code is 660-0075.

Addition3:
>Where will this 3rd number go that I am missing? I got this address from a family member in Korea. Will they write it different?

What do you mean? If they don't know the correct address, I don't know, either.

Addition4:
>Or is it something completely different?

I said it's "3rd" number. So it's something different, right? I think you better give us its apartment name, even if you can't give us person's name.

How to speak in Japan? (Erm...the high pitch?)?

Question:

I am wondering about women's "speaking voices" and "polite voices". Is high pitched voice polite and what about men? Do they also have to change their voice while trying to speak politely?

Answer:

I think I understand your question.
Once I went to a one-day seminar which taught us reception manner, where the instructor was saying "when answering the phone, you'd better make your voice a little high-pitched" (That's why some of female Japanese tel operators sound funny....)
I remember a colleague of mine was often saying (almost kidding) to another colleague, "hey, you sound gloomy. Make the tone of your voice higher!"
As my husband worked at a Japanese company, he used to be imitating those who were using 'sales (acting-like)' tone...., yeah he tried to make his voice 'high-pitched'.

Thinking about moving to Japan?

Question:

Ok, so since I was 4 I've been wanting to move to Japan. I'm in my teenage years right now. But I'm slipping on if when I'm older I should move there or not. I do know Japanese. But, since the Tsunami happend I'm not sure if I want to anymore or if I do. I've heard earthquakes happen very often over there. Thank you (v^_^)b

You are not going to live in Japan any time soon. You are still young and probably don't understand immigration rules and the need to do specialist jobs but when you are older you will fully understand

Question:

Here's what I want to say in BASIC Japanese:

"During the Edo period art and culture also flourished. Colorful Ukiyo-e showed daily life in Edo. For example women in kimono or people enjoying sakura. A popular form of entertainment was kabuki. Kabuki actors were all men know as onnagata. They wore vibrant makeup and costumes. Kabuki plays are often romantic stories. "

What would Japanese people do if I walk around Tokyo in a Darth Vader suit?

Question:

And stand on top of elevators and tell people "may the force be with you" when they come up, and run around in traffic (not blocking traffic).

Will I get arrested?

If I enter a nude bath filled with yakuza members and wearing only darth vader helmet, will they beat and torture me?

Answer:

I guess people would try to ignore.
Japanese police officers are very friendly to silly people. They know their budget is not to play with you.
You should remember most of them even don't understand "may the force be with you"
Yakuza members, in bath, should be busy enough to polish up their tattoo, with only four fingers on the left hand. No time to pay attention to Darth Vader.

How much does takoyaki cost?

Question:

Answer:

Usually 300-500 yen for 8 or so tako balls. One ball is a fairly good size for one bite, which is to say that you cannot have two balls or more in your mouth simultaneously, so you get eight bites. You would have to pay approx. $4. Is it worth that? I guess it is, but only when you want to eat the thing. That's not something you want to eat very frequently. Occasionally do, that's when it is worth $4. Other times, it's like why pay money for that crap.
