Is it legal to carry a genuine tamahagane katana in Japan?

Question:

I was wondering, once you register the sword and everything, if you can openly wear it with a wakizashi like the samurai did

Answer:

It's illegal to carry any possible weapon without any reasonable due reasons.
This regulation could be applied even for kitchen knives and wooden sticks.
No matter if it's registered or not.
What is the "possible weapons"? What is the "due reasons"? That's police can make a decision on site and the court would judge later.
If police considered it's possible weapons, you could be arrested.

If you were learning " i ai do" ( a sort of martial art in which you use a real sword), and it's on your way to the training class of "i ai do". You might not be arrested. You need to prove that fact.

If my husband and I have a child here, will our child have dual-citizenship?

Question:

My husband and I are both Americans living in Japan. We plan to have our baby on Japanese soil (he works on a U.S. base but we live off-base, where we plan to deliver our baby). I know another couple who has a 13-year old daughter, same scenario and they swear up and down that she has Japanese citizenship. But now I'm finding information online that says that one of us (myself or my husband) would have to be Japanese for our child to have Japanese citizenship, even though the child will be born in Japan. What is the truth here, and do you have links to information to back up what you say? Thank you!

Answer:

She will be an American only.

I've never been to japan, but I suggest buying Japanese erasers by Iwako. They are fun and addicting to collect. I have 639 erasers and I started collecting 3 years ago. Here's the iwako site:

These are not all of the erasers, but I know they have hundreds of stores that sell these in japan.

Does anyone know how to activate Speech Recognition for Japanese?

Question:

According to sources (i.e., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spe… Speech Recognition is built-in for Windows 7 in several languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Chinese. I’m most interested in Japanese. (I would like to have Japanese dictated onto Word (or another word processor)) and/or e-mail. Does anyone know how to activate Speech Recognition for Japanese?

If Speech Recognition for Windows 7 is not available for any reason, I’d be happy to use any other dictation/ transcription software for Japanese. Could anyone recommend an applicable software or give me a lead on this?

Thank you!^^

Answer:

Check pages like this.

hi. Well, I thought you would talk about languages as I did not talk about that. But I wasn't sure.

According to those sites, you need to install language packs. Japanese pack for Japanese.

If i get my Japanese citizenship does that make me a Blackanese?

Question:

Answer:

It makes you a guy with a shitty sense of humor.

Just Kidding, compared to some of the idiot **** I hear on here, this wasn't so bad. Besides, half black and half Koreans are called Bloreans, that is true. And black mexicans are called Blaxicans.
So Why not?

Man, threeday. Give him a break. Now all the Japanese people are confused and think he's a racist. Relax, it's not a war crime to make bad puns. "You need moral."="You need remedial grammar."

Where should I buy yukata?

Question:

Should I buy online with price range 80-100 dollars per set. Or should I buy the yukata set while I am in Japan (I'll come to Japan this September)?

Answer:

Where will you be in Japan, and how long will you be there? I know a place in Kyoto that, as far as I remember, sells them all year and you can get a nice new set for $50 or less. However, September being the tail end (or even past the end) of yukata season, they become MUCH more difficult to find in Japanese shops AND in online shops like Rakuten or Ichiroya. You could wait until you''re in Japan and see if you can find a set you like that is cheaper than the ones you have found online, but realize that in September your options are probably going to be more limited than they would be in in the late spring and summer. If you have found a set you really love now, it might be better to just go ahead and buy it now rather than waiting to see if find one in Japan and taking the risk that you won't find one and that the set you like now will be sold out.

Where to stay in Kansai?

Question:

So i plan to travel around Kansai area for 5-6 days and I wonder where (which prefecture) is it better to stay? I'm thinking of somewhere with a very convenient train station (where I can just hop on a train and go to another prefecture in Kansai)

ONEGAI!

THANK YOU!

Answer:

Of course, I recommend you Osaka city.
But Osaka is not a small town. There are a lot of stations and towns.

Which station is good for you depends on where you want to go.
If you want to go to Kyoto and Kobe, Osaka = Umeda is good for you.
If you want to go to Nara or southern part of Osaka, Namba is better than Umeda.

American girl moving to Japan D:?

Question:

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Japanese culture and have always wanted to go there. And it looks like I'm getting my wish xD but it's so bittersweet for me, since i barely speak any Japanese. So I have a few questions:
I am 15 years old and going into the 10th grade. Does that mean I'll be in 10th grade in Tokyo, or is the school system completely different?
Does every high school have a uniform, or just the private ones?
What are the chances that a teacher or student will be able to speak or understand English? I'm determined to learn Japanese, but having another English speaker around besides my family would make me more comfortable. xD
Am I going to be made fun of or stared at? I already get stared at here in the US because of my super pale skin and black hair. Add bright green eyes and it looks even weirder >.>
Do they have facebook in Japan? I was wondering because i heard they don't have it in China. sorry if I sound stupid haha.
well that's all i have for now, i hope i'll be able to get at least one of these questions answered. Thanks for your help! (:

Answer:

Are you moving with your parents? If so ok. But if not , you can't just move to Japan. lol

Most high schools have uniforms that you have to wear all the time, some have uniforms you wear sometimes. It depends on where you are. but it is VERY common.

You need to learn Japanese, and I don't even think you can attend a school if you can't even speak Japanese. Classes are in Japanese except for English class. The only forign students I've seen in a class is ones who can already speak Japanese.

The chances of finding someone who speaks Japanese in america, are 10X easyer than finding someone who speaks English in Japan.

You will for sure be staired at.

Yes facebook is in Japan, its just not that common at all.

Its best to learn Japanese on a learning website because the good ones teach "casual Japanese which is used 99% of the time. The following websites are the best websites for the following reasons,

http://www.123japanese.com
★★★★★

- Teaches FULL Japanese lesson FREE
- Polite, Casual and slang Japanese (all Japanese)
- Fully explains lessons
- Teaches kanji and kana aswell
- Has video lessons

- Lots of other study materials

They also have a youtube channel
http://www.youtube.com/123japanesecom

http://www.japanesepod101.com

http://www.maggisensei.com
★★★★

- It teaches random lessons
- Detailed lessons on wide variety of topics
- Casual and polite Japanese
- You can find a lot of stuff here you wont find anywhere else

What to stay away from.

- books. : books only teach polite Japanese and usually have general translations rather than explanations. Polite Japanese isn't even used in casual speach, and books don't have a lot of information.

- Websites with not a lot of explanations: when learning a language, its easier if you get a good detailed explanation on the translation of something because a lot of times, something can't be directly translated.

Will people think I'm trashy if I wear a lot of makeup in Japan?

Question:

So I wear quite a bit of makeup. Actually it's not bad. I don't look like an orange raccoon but I'm worried that the amount of makeup I wear would be too much to people in Japan. I wear it to school everyday and people say that it looks fine and it looks good on me but I just really wanna avoid looking tacky.
I will be going on a foreign exchange. I just found out that they got a host family for me in Kanonji, but it is quite a smaller town so I'm scared that I'll look weird to them.
Also I'm white, so I don't wanna be the weird gaijin girl who wears a lot of makeup lol.
I know it's probably the last thing I should worry about, but it is on my mind. aha

Answer:

If you're going into high school, you may not be allowed to wear much to school. But out in the real world, women (especially women old enough to be out of high school) often absolutely CAKE the makeup on. That said, they don't look like orange racoons either, because they know the colors and shades that work best with their skin tones. In addition, not everyone wears much or any makeup. If you're worried that you're going to wear too much, why not either skip the makeup entirely or just put a very small amount on until you get used to Japan and what makeup is normal for your peers?

Are there any jobs in Japan where I can work and live-in?

Question:

Like bathhouse jobs and what are their specific locations? Also, are the Japanese more reserved. Lastly, I'm graduating soon. Should I go on to college or save up in Japan?

Answer:

Japanese Government's Working Visa policy is very tight, and there's a slim chance for most of people who have not graduated from collage or university. Especially, for those people who have no job and tring to find job in Japan, Visa would not be issued.
Additionally, Japanese Economy is sluggish and not many job opportunities there.

I recommend you to consider going college.

Pros and cons of japan?

Question:

I'm doing a project on this so HELP!

Answer:

This is not the Homework Channel. This homework assignment should be accomplished by you reading about Japan, on Google, Wiki, etc, forming an opinion of Japan and then comparing it to your own country. Only you can decide what is a pro and what is a con for yourself. That is part of the learning process.

CON: Often crowded, hot and humid in the summer in my locale, land/home prices very, very high

PRO: Most students do their own work, though like other students, they often forget it soon afterwards. Good sushi.

Teaching English in Japan with a CELTA?

Question:

I am soon to graduate from my Masters degree in Screenwriting. I also have a BA (Hons) Film Studies. I understand that these are unsuitable degrees to be teaching English with so I am going to take a 4 week intensive CELTA. I am wondering with these qualifications, would I be able to find a teaching job?

Answer:

In general you'll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work.

The degree can be in almost any subject as it is usually required for the visa only so you will find teachers with a degree in Engineering or Sociology. Having said this, to help get the job it's obviously better to be English or language related, for example a degree in English literature.

The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com). A CELTA is a great certificate but probably not the best to take without experience; it's very intense, very expensive and without prior knowledge you could well find it too hard (many do).

How much does a trip to Tokyo, Japan cost?

Question:

So, as the title says, I was wondering how much would a trip for 3 persons cost, for two weeks I'd say, and I'm not looking for anything luxurious, we don't wanna eat at any expensive restaurant, just common restaurants. And how much would it cost including visiting nearby attractions. Also around what time of the year should we go in order to see the cherry blossoms in their beauty. Ow and where would it be better to go, in Tokyo or in Kyoto?

Answer:

Air fare: You need $1000-1500 if you are departing from US

Hotel: Usually, you need $120 per night if you want to stay at a hotel.
If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $40-60 per night.
If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $250-300 or more.

Food, transportation and others: You need $60-120 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more.

So you need $120 for hotel and $90 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks, the total cost will be $2940.

What's this movie called?

Question:

I remember seeing a movie on the plane to the US, from Japan, and it was pretty awesome. It was a Japanese movie, and the title is something like this (I've translated it to English, of course): 1746 Stories for My Wife and I.

I'm not sure of the last two integers of that number, but I'm absolutely sure of the first two. The story line goes like this: a husband's wife gets cancer, and because he wants to make her laugh more, he writes a story every day for her. The guy is pretty weird. He's really a sci-fi writer, and he's quite the imaginative one.

Yeihhh.

Answer:

1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife

Is it still worth to go to japan after all what happend?

Question:

Hello, i was wondering if it was really still worth the money and experience.
I am 17 years old and planning on living or going to japan for a certain amount of time when i become an adult. I don't come from a wealthy family and i'm pretty sensitive.
I did not really follow the media and news about what happend, although i feel really bad for it.
I am really interested in the culture and all since i was young.

Ps. I am sorry if i offended anyone with this question.

Answer:

If you're American, you can only stay there 90 days as a visitor. You need a four year degree to qualify for a work visa.
Over 99% of Japan is fine. The only trouble spot is near the Fukushima nuke plants.
If it's worth it or not, only you can decide.

How much would be a good amount to live off in Japan for 12 days?

Question:

I have been asked to teach Drama in Japan and the stay is going to work out about at about 12 days. 4 of those days I will be working with the staff and students involved in the workshops and they have offered me 50,000yen for my work. Being new to this, I was wondering if this would be enough to live off? I don't have to worry about acommodation so it would just be food, drink and any extra fun visits and touristy things I may decide to do.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you.

Answer:

Depends on what you want to do. Going to bars can really drive the price up, as well as expensive restaurants. You can get a subway day pass for about 1000 yen, so getting around is no big deal.
As long as you don't splurge too much, then yes it is quite possible.
Consider ways to save money such as buying some food in a supermarket instead of a restaurant for at least one meal a day if you want to conserve.
If you want a list of typical prices, try

It's more or less the same for all of Japan despite the title.

What is the best College to Continue Learning Japanese in Japan?

Question:

After studying in and out of high school for 4 years?

Please and Thank You!

Answer:

Japanese colleges are not a place to learn Japanese. It's a place for those who already have proficiency in Japanese to study something.

So you better try to find a Japanese language school, not college.

Do Japanese think the re-construction efforts may stimulate the economy into another economic boom?

Question:

Answer:

Nope. The economy is in way too deep of a hole for that. The Japanese government is talking about 'loaning' up to 5 trillion yen to TEPCO. At no interest. This isn't going to be a boost to the economy, if so, the government would have sabotaged the reactor years ago.

Japanese words that are misused in America?

Question:

Is it just me or is there a lot of Japanese words that are misused in America?

Some examples are the words anime and geisha.

A lot of people in America only use the word "anime" to describe animation that comes from Japan, and some Americans even only use it to describe the style of animation in which big eyes and stuff are used from Japanese animation,
but in Japan the word "anime" can be used to describe all types of animation from all over the world, is that correct? Anime is just a shorthand way of saying Animation in Japan, right?
So is it technically not correct to only use it to describe specific Japanese animation? Please enlighten me on how the word "anime" is used in Japan.

Also the word "geisha."
I always hear American people describing anybody who wears a kimono as a geisha, when that is not true at all. Just because someone wears a kimono doesn't make them a geisha.

I'm not saying all Americans make these mistakes, but it's just the ones I most commonly notice among the people who I associate with.

Are these words being misused?

Please answer only if you are fluent in the Japanese language and thoroughly know Japanese culture.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:

>but in Japan the word "anime" can be used to describe all types of animation from all over the world, is that correct? Anime is just a shorthand way of saying Animation in Japan, right?

Yes, you are right.

Another example is "hentai". I think this is used for perverted manga in US. But in Japan, it's used for perverted people.
