If my husband and I have a child here, will our child have dual-citizenship?

Question:

My husband and I are both Americans living in Japan. We plan to have our baby on Japanese soil (he works on a U.S. base but we live off-base, where we plan to deliver our baby). I know another couple who has a 13-year old daughter, same scenario and they swear up and down that she has Japanese citizenship. But now I'm finding information online that says that one of us (myself or my husband) would have to be Japanese for our child to have Japanese citizenship, even though the child will be born in Japan. What is the truth here, and do you have links to information to back up what you say? Thank you!

Answer:

She will be an American only.
