What are the rules regarding cats on Tashirojima or 'cat island'?

Question:

I'm just curious. Considering the importance of cats to the culture on the island, I imagine that there would be some regulations involving interaction with the cats. I can't find the information with a Google search, so I was hoping someone here might have the knowledge.

Answer:

Tashirojima is an island off the coast of Miyagi prefecture (I am not sure how badly the island was damaged in the Tsunami). 83% of the population is over 65 years of age and I know for a fact, many old women feed the cats on a daily basis and so they can freely breed in abundance. There is no law against interacting with these cats, although of course, cruelty to these cats is highly frowned upon.
Most of these cats are wild cats/strays that breed and so I wouldn't recommend just going up to one and picking it up. Many are friendly though and enjoy a good pat on the head.

How can I help Japan during the summer?

Question:

I am a junior in high school, and this summer, i have nothing to do. I feel like I should help people, do some extra community service. So is there a high school program this summer where I can go to Japan and help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami?

if not... what else can i do this summer? is there other places where i can travel to and help people? i was also thinking volunteering at a hospital, since i want to major in nursing in college... i live in the bay area...

and please give me a website for the program... so i can research it :)

Answer:

I don't believe they are accepting foreign help by means of individual volunteers in Japan but you can help out at your nearest Red Cross and ask them if you can volunteer your time specifically for the charity for Japan.

Has anyone from Japan come to the US by airplane since this disaster/radiation thing?

Question:

just wondering if anyone has been allowed to come back to the US since the radiation bs.

Answer:

Like thousands of plane loads of people. The entire population of Japanese people aren't being quarantined in Japan. They are free to go anywhere they please as long as they have a visa.

What's your reaction to the radiation leak in japan?

Question:

Answer:

As expected paid bloggers and the mass media empires play down the worst disaster since Chernobyl. Some credible experts feel it's of the same or greater magnitude as Chernobyl, with perhaps less human occupied territory affected.

Why are political figures and talk media playing down the significance? Could it be that we are being manipulated by people who want to profit from the nuclear power industry?

Nuclear power is anything but clean and safe. It is also not cost effective. The Chinese currently use solar water heaters throughout the country. Why doesn't the US?

Perhaps there is no big capital pay back for appropriate technologies. Perhaps you need to put the squeeze on people to make the most money?

In WWII, i understand japanese army wanted to kill chinese in Nanking? but i don't understand why they raped?

Question:

were the soldiers taught to rape or what?

i understand this is a hard question to ask, and may be offensive too, but i just don't understand why? How can the solders do that if they have mother/sister/wife/daughter?

Answer:

In this case, the rape had very little or nothing to do with sex, it was the senseless, immoral destruction of and then the control of Nanking. More than three hundred thousand people slaughtered in an orgy of violence. Men, women, children and babies, slaughtered by any means possible, with unimaginable violence, that would truly make you wonder if the perpetrators were in fact human and that lasted less than a week. More people died in Nanking, than have died in total from the two atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Edit..........I have personally seen photographs, shown to me by a Japanese friend, that were taken by his father of a field, in one photograph the field had a long line of what I thought were footballs, another photo that was taken closer, showed what I thought were heads but, couldn't be sure, a third photo even closer, showed unmistakably, heads, their bodies, still in a crouched position nearby. Another photograph showed a smiling and triumphant soldier, hand on sword pointing into the ground with one foot on the decapitated body of a Chinese man, like a trophy shot on safari, hunter standing with one foot on the carcass of a lion or tiger. The photos were originals, not brought out for propaganda purposes, just in his or rather his father's personal and private collection. Other photos of Chinese people who had been hung and still others that he would not show me, saying that they were bad but, war is war and war is bad, his words, not mine.

Edit....A bunch of soldiers? what the hell are you talking about, a bunch of soldiers, there were thousands. Try using what little grey matter that you have left that hasn't been addled by drink or drugs and think. You believe all the propaganda produced on a two bit Japanese variety show. Shows that the normal intelligent Japanese people turn off, preferring to watch bath water evaporate instead.

Edit......and what proof, other than a retarded variety show, do you have?

Edit........view some of the other film clips in the third youtube link given by Joriental, taken after the fall of Nanking and what old Japanese soldiers say of the ways that they executed Chinese soldiers and civilians. These are Japanese film clips, taken by Japanese soldiers. Lets get one thing straight, I do not believe everything that China says, in fact they are, by and large the biggest liars that it has ever been my misfortune to have met, and I lived there for more than twenty years. I have only ever met one honest, truthful Chinese person in all that time, I am not exaggerating. I have never met another people so ready, willing and perfectly able to lie about the smallest matter and wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. The people that I have met, talked to and became friends with are Japanese, a people that I would trust more than I do my own. I also lived in Japan for nearly as long as I did in China, so I do know what I am talking about.

Immigration at Narita?

Question:

I am headed to Okinawa next week, I have two hours from when I land to when my next plane takes off and I need to go through immigration, collect my baggage check in to my domestic flight with ANA and go through the security again. First off anyone know if I am correct on that who process? Should I try get a later flight?

Answer:

Two hours should be enough. Also a lot of people (irrationally) have canceled their plans to Narita/Tokyo, so Immigration should be faster then usual.

I assume the OP is transferring to the domestic terminal at Narita so transferring at Haneda is irrelevant.

Japan, can I go there?

Question:

This summer I'd like to go to japan to help out. My question is will I be allowed to go there and help with building houses and feeding them and stuff?

Answer:

You will most likely not be able to just goto Japan and help with reconstruction. The only foreseeable method to do so is if you find a group like habitat for humanity that is organizing a trip like this, and I don't think they do that kind of thing.

If you are fluent in Japanese you may be able to go over there on a visitor visa and scout out some information about joining some kind of volunteer program but even that's probably a slim to none chance.

Whats the cheapest sailboat that will get me from Oregon to Japan? (used is okay)?

Question:

I'm going to sail to sail to Japan or want to anyway. The only problem is that I'm not sure I can afford a sailboat. After looking online, it seems s though price varies from 10,000 to 300,000. Im looking for something closer to 10,000. My main question is whether or not a 10,000 dollar sailboat will be able to get me there. I don't want to end up stranded.

One adventurer to another,
Wandering_Poet

Answer:

I have no sailing experience as I am a tad hydrophobic. If you want to do this trip on a budget, may I suggest that you look into becoming a crewman on another vessel. There are the merchant marines that could get you this kind of adventure and plenty of cruise liners out there, though I think none are currently going to japan. I would work to become a crewman If I were you. You get there and make money in the process.

How long can you stay in Japan?

Question:

Without a visitor visa.
With one.
How to stay 'forever' (like 10 years for example)?
What are the consequences for not leaving when your due?

Answer:

Okay, to answer your questions...

Without a visitor visa?
You can't even be in Japan without some kind of visa. So no time without a visitor visa.

With one?
You can stay 3 months.

How to stay 'forever' (like 10 years for example)?
You will either need to a work visa (I am on one now) and as long as you have a job you can keep renewing your visa indefinitely. I am going on my 7th year. My first year was a one year visa, my second time renewing I applied for a three year. And then I applied for another three year. Another way to stay is to marry a Japanese national (which I have done and will switch over my visa next year). You have to keep renewing your spousal visa, but that is another way to stay as long as you want.

What are the consequences for not leaving when your due?
Immigration (if they find you) will stamp your passport as an overstayer and then you won't be able to re-enter Japan again for so many years once you are deported.

Question:

The tsunami destroyed it. How long will it take to repair everything! Or will it ever be the same again?

Answer:

All of Japan was not destroyed. Certain parts of the country were very badly damaged, but the Japanese people will pull together, and survive. Look at this news story:

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20110325/thl…

Even the gangsters there are pitching in and helping out. This is a country where the people are very strong, and they will use that strength, and their unity, to rebuild.

Research topic on current situation? in Japan?

Question:

I have to write a research paper and it has to be arguable and I have to be able to provide parentheticals and proof. I want to do it over japan but not the radiation. I was wondering if something like Japan will get back on theyre feet and be back to normal in no time. I want to talk about what the people are going through at the moment like the water bottles selling out and how the nation is staying whole despite the pain.

Answer:

Well, if you want your research paper to be about people buying bottle water, you should mention the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear disaster that might or might not happen. You might describe what are Japanese going through and compare it with the Kobe earthquake's damages done to that city in 1995. Kobe was rebuild in less than 10 years which was a great achievement. Now, you might raise a question how long will it take to rebuild those north eastern Japanese coastal cities and weather the infrastructure will be changed regarding the fact that the coastline has shortened 2.5 m plus these cities will be having higher tides and possible floods etc. I think it is necessary to mention the nuclear disaster as it had effected the economy and the food products that are being cultivated in those areas but you don't necessarily have to write a separate paper on radiation, I think.

Is it safe to travel to Tokyo next week?

Safe, but not a good idea. My friends there said they are having rolling blackouts that last 2 or 3 hours. Things such as milk, bread and frozen foods are sold out.
Radiation levels are low in Tokyo. But things are not under control. Six nuke power stations have been damaged.

When you first went to Japan (if you're a foreigner who wanted to go to Japan before), what were you first...?

Question:

Negative + positive first impressions (cultural shock etc)?
And have you ever felt that Japan isn't that special after all and you wanted to go home?
Sorry, maybe it's a bit confusing question but it's kind of important.

Answer:

I had the opportunity to live in Japan, in Fukuoka, for a year in 1955, away from the US Air Force Base, where no other Americans lived. Then, the first shock was that "body elimination" was not sexualities, as it is here in the States. My first walk to the train station, I saw men lined against a wall and reallized they were wetting! I nearly stumbled over a woman who had just squatted down in fromt on me. I vowed not to enter the culture in that aspect--but got caught downtown and had to make my way to a Westernized Department store, sure to have restrooms. I found it, but it was "uni-sexed". Men's urinal was on one side, and then a 4" high platform with 4" round holds placed in it. Men and women weresquattedd over them. My eyes glazed over and pain forced me forward. People there stare at differences--whereas Americans try not to stare--but this sight was so unusual...I learned to time my trips better. But people were very helpful at large and eager to speak English with me. It was a total police state, and there was no crime. I learned to speak enough Japanese and learned to read Hiragana and Kata Kana--thewrittenn script that read from top-down, and from left to right. I traveled all over the Island of Kyushu by myself and learned a world of beauty, kindness and adventure.---I'd love to return to visit, as I never got to see Mt. Juji-san and other beautirul areas, but at 81, I don't have the money. I'll always be thankful for the opportunity.

Training Nagoya,Japan?

Question:

I have a training programe in Nagoya,Japan from June 08 to June 28,2011.Is it safe to go there after tsunami and huge amount of radiation?

Answer:

Completely safe.

Nagoya was not devastated by the tsunami or the earthquake. One possible problem is the radiation. Nagoya is located to the west of the nukes. The jet stream blows from west to east. In addition, there is a high mountain range spreading from north to south as if to protect Nagoya from winds from east. Therefore, the radio active materials will not spread to or fall in Nagoya area. Enjoy your training.
