Can i wear a yukata to a lilac festival?

Question:

i know this is Early but there is a lilac festival in may and i was thinking to wear the yukata there is this ok to do ?

Answer:

Technically you aren't supposed to. Yukata are summer garments (and within summer are pretty much confined to the hottest months, July and August) and aren't appropriate for any other time of the year. But if you aren't in Japan you could probably get away with it and nobody would care, though people who know anything about kimono might wonder a little.

Translate Japanese to English?

Question:

It's from a song and these are the parts I don't understand:

止めていた時間が動き出して
希望の光に向かう道は
間違いじゃないと自分で決めたんだ

迷いを捨てれば馬鹿になった
ここにいたって陽は落ちて 焦り繰り返した

I think the first part says something like: "Stopped time starts moving on the road that leads to a ray of hope. I've decided without a doubt". I don't know what the second one is saying.

Answer:

Yes, the first part is fine as above.
Second part:

Throwing away indicisions made me a fool. Even here the Sun sets, frustrations repeated.

Japanese language question?

Question:

Can someone translate this?
暖房ガンガン入れるからカンペンしとくれ!

I can read it but I don't 'understand' it...
I though カンペン → 筆箱 ?

Thank you!

Answer:

カンペン is actually かんべん べ and ぺ are often mixed up.

勘弁しとくれ. = for give me
From the context, I suspect a dialogue like this:
A: I'm freezing, why is this room so cold?
B: Sorry, I'll crank up the heat, so forgive me.

So B is your answer just in case I was not clear on this.

hibachi steak and shrimp

2 tablespoons canola oil
1 large carrot, thinly sliced
1 zucchini, thinly sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 (8-ounce) package sliced mushrooms
1 1/2 pounds top round steak
1 pound egg roll wrappers
1/2 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 teaspoons chopped garlic
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons butter
Directions
Put a large skillet over medium-high heat and add half of the oil. When the oil is hot, add the vegetables and stir-fry until the vegetables are almost done, about 5 minutes. While the vegetables are cooking, heat a second skillet over high heat and add the remaining oil.

Cut the steak into small cubes, and stir-fry until browned on all sides, about 4 to 5 minutes.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over medium heat. Separate the egg roll wrappers into 2 piles. Roll each pile up into a log. Slice the log into thin strips about 1/4-inch thick and separate them into individual noodles. Put half of the noodles into the boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Drain and add to a serving bowl or platter. (Reserve the remaining noodles for the Online Round 2 Recipe, Japanese Noodle Bowl.)

In a small bowl combine the soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and cornstarch and set aside.

Add the steak, along with any accumulated juices, to the pan with the vegetables. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the vegetables and cook until the sauce has thickened, about 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the butter. (Reserve 2 cups for the Online Round 2 Recipe, Japanese Noodle Bowl).

Japanese Steakhouse White Sauce -

1-1/4 cup Hellmann's mayonnaise *
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon melted butter
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon paprika
dash cayenne pepper

Using a fork or a whisk, blend all ingredients together thoroughly until well mixed and the sauce is smooth. Refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to blend. Bring to room temperature before serving.

The sauce will NOT taste right if you don't let it sit overnight. And please don't try to substitute ketchup for the tomato paste! The water is needed to bring this to the right consistency.

I don't know how long this keeps in the refrigerator; I've kept it 7-10 days, but I always wind up eating it all before 10 days so after that - anyone's guess.

* Hellmann's is called "Best Foods" west of the Rockie Mountains. Use other mayos at your peril - many cheap brands make the sauce taste too much like mayo.

Can a foreigner work in order to support yourself and pay your way through schooling in Japan?

Question:

Every single person I have ever talked to doing this seems to just have rich parents who will pay for them but I don't. And since I want to go to school there I will need income. I'm well aware that it's easy to find a job as an English teacher in Japan so please don't flood this question with JET Aeon Gaba Interac ECC and other ALT/Eikaiwa advertisements.

The part where it gets tricky is with things like loans and visas. A friend of mine tried to juggle work and school. It takes a very motivated person to work 40 hours a week and be a fulltime student but he had to do it in order to afford rent and tuition payments and due to visa complications he is being forced to return to the US. This was part of the message he sent me:

"You can't change to a student visa if you have had a work visa. Don't trust anything they say. They will not take care of you in anyway." And told me that you just need to have enough money to support yourself saved up before you go. Otherwise it will never work.

So obviously if he had had the funds he wouldn't have needed a job and could have just come as a student with no worries about money and no visa complications but that's not an option for everyone.

So if is is possible to support yourself while going to school in Japan, please tell me how. Thanks.

Answer:

No, it's not. You can only work part time as a student. And the work has to be approved.
Don't kid yourself, no job in Japan is easy to get. That includes teaching English. You need a BA / BS degree to qualify for a work visa. Competition for these jobs is much higher than it used to be.
So if you don't have the funds available, it's not going to happen.

Bulky english letters typed by Japanese?

Question:

Hello

Like that.
How do they type like that? Is it just the way their computers are or something, because not all of them do.
I'm just curious. ^_^
thanks

Answer:

It shows up when they input using Zenkaku, the Japanese input method, instead of Hankaku, the input method for English and all other alphebetic languages.
I haven't used it before as I see no point in typing that way.

What are some romantic Japanese phrases?

I cannot read Japanese(kanji,katakana,hiragana)

And some people here are giving you completely nonsense phrases. (just trolling)

Is Japan still safe because of the 1 trillion US debt they hold?

Question:

obviously japan has been screwed by the US HARD since the 1990s, their GDP per capita barely reached the 1985 level recently... back in early 1990, the Japs GDP per capita used to be twice as large as the US...

NOW even worse, they have accumulated this massive national debt... (210% of its GDP !) but last time I checked, the JAPS with this massive debt is still gulping up big chunk of US debt LOL, nearly 1 trillion US dollars of 'em ! while it's forex reserve stood also at 1 trillion, which means nearly 100% of all jap forex reserve is in US dollars !

China on the contrary, holds only 30% of US dollar debt (1.1 trillion) as their forex reserve (3.5 trillion).

We all know Japan is American's *****, but how far does this have to go? when will we finally have freedom???

Answer:

Obviously you're ignorant as hell. And stop calling the Japanese "Japs" - it's a derogatory slur, and you damn well know it.
Try trolling somewhere else.

How to mail from Canada to Japan?

Question:

I'm having trouble in understanding the postal form for letters going to Japan from another country. Does anyone know the exact form that an address in Japan should be to ensure that the letter is sent at the proper addressed person?

Answer:

Japan Post is excellent at deciphering addresses.

Just do it the Western way of small to big: name, street, city, prefecture, country, with postal code at the end.

The actual way it's done in Japan though is written in Japanese from big to small, postal code at the bottom or top. Also, add "sama" after someone's name.

Is there a computer program like the Kotoba app?

Question:

Where you can draw the kanji and the program will help you look up what it is. Like word recognition.
I have a complex piece of kanji on a gift I received and no way for me to go about finding what it says since I don't have an iPhone or iPad. Something for the computer is what I'm looking for.

More about Kobata: http://kotoba.pierrephi.net/

Answer:

Can you scan the kanji or take a photo and paste it here and I can tell you what it is.

I am a native Japanese and elecronics engineer. Answer to your question as far as I know is No. In order to draw you have to have an input device as touch panel.
There might be some sort of paint brush type of program that you can draw and use that as an input.
I will research more and if I find anything I will let you know.

How can you visit your son studying in Japan?

Question:

I am from the Philippines and my son is applying for admission to a japanese language school in tokyo. If he will be granted a student visa, what kind of visa is available to us so we can visit him from time to time.

Answer:

You can apply for a tourist visa, but it won't be easy, unless you have a big bank account. Filipinos are required to have a certain amount of money in their bank account to assure they return. This was put in place because too many people were leaving and not coming back.

Japan vacation questions (visa's, stays, nightlife, language barrier) ?

Question:

I plan on going to Japan for R&R as a small vacation (currently deployed in the Middle East) in a couple months and I have no idea what to do.

-I read that I wasn't gonna need a VISA if I stayed for 14 days, is this true ?
-Do they speak English over there ? Can I get by w/o speaking Japanese ?
-How's the nightlife ? What kind of music they got at the clubs ? Price for other entertainment ?
-How much are usually hotels ? Food ?
-Anything I should know ? What to avoid ?

Answer:

If you're American or from nearly any western country you don't need a visa and you'll get a landing permit on arrival - of course you'll need a round trip ticket. Few speak English with ease. But you'll find lots of alphabetized names in Japan such as in train and subway stations, and many ticket machines and post office ATMs also have English. Some family restaurants have menus in English in bigger cities with more tourists, and many eateries have plastic models of their food next to their front doors, so if you can't read the menu, just take the waiter or waitress outside and point at what you want. Few speak English fluently, but if you get lost or something, find someone young, write out your question in simple words and they can probably help you. For clubs there is every kind kind of music you could think of in the bigger cities. Just do a search for Tokyo night clubs or wherever, and you can see a sample; or else after you arrive get one of the ex-pat magazines and look at their ads - they will have places where English is spoken. And Osaka is definitely *not* a "small, quiet city".
For food you can look at www.bento.com - there is cheap fast food and everything else on up. The yen is extremely strong now though, you will be in for some sticker shock. You might want to see some typical Japanese prices, such as on www.tokyopriceguide.com

You also might look at staying in a Japanese inn (ryokan) for at least a night. They are a truly Japanese experience which you should enjoy if you are coming to Japan.

You can get a Tokyo or other city subway day pass for about 1000 yen and go wherever you want.

How do you say 'make me wait' in Japanese?

Question:

As in 'you make me wait' etc. Just not in a past tense. How would you say it in the negative, i.e., 'don't make me wait.' Can it be said without the verb 'suru?'

Answer:

You should learn causative forms of Japanese verbs in order to be able to say that type of phrases. Take the plain verb, remove the last sound(-u in this case) and add -aseru. This is how you do if the verb is godan(五段動詞). There is a different to do it for a ichidan verb.
wait- matsu
make someone wait- mataseru
make me wait- watashi wo mataseru (This verb takes the particle, wo)
dont make me wait- watashi wo matasenai

desu forms are matasemasu and matasemasen.
