In Japan can English language teachers in colleges sleep with their students?

Question:

I thought it is illegal? It is in Australia?
It happens and I know some who do but in Japan is it allowed or not?
Im confused
I think it is wrong and unethical

Answer:

It's wrong and unethical of course, and you'll probably get fired if your employer/school finds out about it. Highly inadvisable.

It is illegal when it comes to Jr. High and High School students (under 18 years old).

But if your question is talking about college (students 18+) then it is not illegal. Just highly unethical.

And before someone causes a hissyfit about my answer, in Japan, the age of Majority is 20, but the age of consent is 13, however, prefecture laws override this and make the age of consent for sexual activity at age 18.

I assume similar laws exist in Australia in regards to the age of the person.

Of course your for your employer this is a big no no and ethnically speaking is wrong (as mentioned), you could be fired from your job. The practice of dating students is discouraged even for regular older students as well (in language schools etc).

However being fired doesn't mean you'll be arrested because there is nothing illegal about it (speaking about college students).

If you're lucky enough to get a gig teaching in a Japanese college, I wouldn't blow it all away to sleep with a student.

How technologically advanced is Japan, really?

Question:

Now I know that Japan is technologically advanced. However, I want to know just HOW advanced? How far are the Japanese ahead of us? What do they have (technologically, of course) that the rest of the world do not?

I feel that the gap between Japan, South Korea, and USA's technology isn't that high. However, a lot of people disagree with me.

What do you guys think?

Answer:

They have computerized toilets...I saw it on youtube, so it must be true.

How much does it cost to own a house in Tokyo?

Question:

I want a place in Tokyo that I want to call my own. I have 500,000 dollars / 39,200,000 yen. Is that enough? What's the best I can get?

Answer:

Not in Tokyo itself. 39M yen is just about the bottom starting point for a new house, even outside a big city.

The largest part of the cost is often the land. I live outside Osaka, maybe a 30 minute train ride out. Around my house land runs about $6M/acre. Of course you never buy that much, just enough to put a house on, have a parking space for your car and about 1 m of space between your house and the property line on the other three sides. My house is so close to my neighbor's that the rain gutters are within about 6 inches of each other. When I bought my house about 15 years ago, the house was about $225K and the land another $225K.

If I am not mistaken, the most expensive piece of real estate in the world is located in the Ginza area in Tokyo.

I'm going to japan on foreign exchange?

Question:

I'm fifteen and it will be for a month. I can speak japanese fluently and I'm completely literate. I will be stayong with a host family. Any advice or important experiences from your trip to japan?

Answer:

I'm 14, and I was born there and go back every year. If you are both fluent and literate, this will be easy for you! I can barely read (only hiragana/katakana) so that was hard for me. Otherwise, everyone is very kind, helpful, and polite. You will rarely get any kind of attitude or rudeness.

Actually, I was just there a couple days ago. When I came back, I was kind of reverse-homesick, like I wanted to go back. You will feel homesick when you get there, but you will start to appreciate it within a week or so.

The food is delicious. If you don't like traditional japanese food, japan is becoming pretty westernized, so you can find pretty much any kind of food at the supermarkets.

If you're going to be going to a school, there are a lot of weird customs that you won't be used to. You might have to take off your "outdoor" shoes when you go inside and put on "indoor" shoes. You will have to clean at the end of the day. Expect some other things that you're not used to!

When you're at a store, like if you go to the mall and try some clothes on, take off your shoes before you go into the dressing room.

In general, be cautious and aware of customs. Make sure you're very polite, and watch what other people are doing so you don't feel like an idiot!

Out of curiousity if theres alot of yuri anime shows does that mean japan has alot of lesbos?

Question:

just wondering why so many anime shows have so much yuri in them? is it that way in japan in real life? i understand of course there are more straight people in the world but why does jaan cartoons have so much yuri.

Answer:

Yuri is a popular in anime/manga because it is a poplular "trend" in the West-meaning North America and Europe. So that is why it is shown in most of the shows now. There aren`t very many lesbians in Japan, it`s actually looked down on.

Is it legal to bring my sex toys to Japan?

Question:

Hi, I will be moving out to Japan this fall as a JET teacher. However, I'm afraid that no Japanese can satisfy my cravings--if you know what I mean. They are cool, but I have heard their instrument is...pencil big. I am from San Francisco, and people here don't care what colour of you boy friend is. So, my boyfriends have been black guys...I won't explain why, but you know what they say.
So, my question is, I have this vibrator called Fujitsu N54-R (B) which gives me heaven but I'm afraid that it's so big for a sex toy that Japanese custom officers may think it's a KATANA. I want to bring it but would it be make lots of hassles? Thanks YOU!

Answer:

If you're that concerned, I think you would just be better off buying toys in Japan. If you aren't comfortable looking for or going to a physical store for such things, there are online options that you can find through Google.

In need a fluent Japanese speaker?

Question:

So I found an Japanese artist online who has her own private artblog from her originial, however, it is under password and ID locked.

The only way to obtain it is to ask for the password/ID directly.
Problem is, I can't type in Japanese. So is there anyone possibly able to write "Hello, I am a fan of your artblog, can i have the password/id so i can access your gallery? thank you."

points for fluent Japanese speaker! thanks!

Answer:

I think it is pointless because if someone gives you the starter and she responds how are you going to carry on? It is highly unlikely that she speaks English so you will keep coming back here to ask questions and people might get tired of you. Just my two cents anyway

Inexpensive airfare to Japan from the US?

Question:

Years ago, a friend of mine had been traveling to Japan every year. He had invited me to go, and when I mentioned how expensive airfare was, he gave me a phone number for some travel agency in Dallas.

This travel agency was actually funded by the Japanese government and subsidized airfare. The going rate at the time was $1,200, but this agency could get me non-stop from Dallas to Tokyo for only $600.

I was wondering if anyone has information on this program or has other ideas for cheap airfare. Currently the lowest I've found is on priceline for $1345, and that's booking a year in advance.

Answer:

You have to be VERY careful about looking at air fares - some airlines will quote you a fare of something that looks reasonable, but in their taxes they throw in a fuel surcharge of over $600 - with plans to raise it again from August 1st. Other airlines already include it as part of the fare.
Make sure you look at the total price with everything included.

As for where to look, try
www.mobissimo.com
or
www.kayak.com

With the price of oil near $100 a barrel, you are not going to find cheap fares like in the past.

Japanese group/organization/gang names?

Question:

I'm writing a manga and iNeed help coming up with names for the main characters group as well as names for some if the bad guy group(s)...help?

Answer:

Gruppi da Badda Boyas and Organi dem Cooldudes.

Okay, seriously speaking, it would be nice if you shared some information about them and the kind of name you are thinking of.

I could say: name the good guys hikari5 (光5); but would that be of any use for you? I doubt.
This is kinda like you are asking us to give you ideas for your child's name without telling us what gender she/he is and what language's names you want.

Is it socially acceptable to approach women in Japan?

Question:

I'm usually very forward and polite about asking women out and don't always wait for a social "in" such as common friends or so forth. I don't make sexual comments about women, and I'm waiting until marriage to do anything sexual.

Is it rude to approach women in Japan ?

Answer:

1. How old are you?

2. So you just walk up to women and ask them out? How do American women respond to that? My guess would be not well.

3. All these questions about "Japanese women" will yield the same answer. It just depends!!! Japanese women are not mindless drones. They are as varied and different from one another as American women or women in any other country. So, it just depends. You cannot say "Japanese women" will do one thing or another because they are all different.

Advise needed! Click here! lol?

Question:

Hiiiiiiiii

I like Japanese guys, I just realized this. I want to move to Japan.
I want to know if Japanese guys would date me, and what particular things do they look for in a gf? Looks? Personality? ... I mean, generally. I understand everyone is different, but I can GENERALLY say, that, white American guys would like a "girl next door", "one of the guys", "funny", "down to earth", "not afraid to get dirty", "blonde, blue eyes - usually", "has drinks with the guys"... type of a girl.

thank uuuuuu

Answer:

Do you have a BA / BS degree ? If not, the road ends here. You need a degree to get a work visa. And to get the work visa you need a job offer before you get there.
I'm an American male, and I'm not attracted to blondes.
Have you ever been to Japan ? Known any Japanese men ?

Does "menkun" mean thing in Japanese?

Question:

I am trying to find the password of a user named menkun, the user might be dead so this is not hacking feel free to help.

Answer:

You need to understand that all "user names" used on Internet by Japanese users are not Japanese names.

Or they are not always something meaningful. So the bottom line is, "menkun" is just a random word which does not mean anything in Japanese.

Is it possible to eat cheap in Tokyo?

Question:

Most of the people I know in Japan say I'll be fine, but one British JET told me "there's not much more than fish on this god forsaken rock". I've learned Hiragana and Katakana and some basic Japanese in the last few weeks so I can ask if something is fish or not.

It's something I refuse to budge on. At the same time I don't want to spend over 2-3k yen on food a day.

Answer:

There's a lot of noodle dishes there. As well as fast food places. They have McDonald's and KFC, as well as others. $20- $30 a day ? You'll be fine.

How can I move to japan?

Question:

Hey guys..I'm 14 years old (15 in August) and i was wondering..whats the easiest way to be able to move to japan? after i leave high school i wish to go to college and take a course with Art..something to do with manga or anime etc and then try and get into university but where I'm living now isn't really the best of places..not that many opportunity's to get a job with something to do with manga..i just want to get out of here as soon as possible but i don't know how to get started..any suggestions?

Answer:

I have suggestions, but you won't like them. Give up on the idea of being a manga artist in Japan. The competition is just too high. Not are there thousands of American kids with this dream, there's even more thousands of Japanese kids who want to do the same thing. They would always be hired first as they already know the language and culture.
You should still stay in school and do the best you can. Take art in college as you want, but leave other job ideas open. It's not easy to get a job as an artist anywhere.
Maybe think up your own characters. You still have a lot of time.

Transportations from NRT to Kamakura and Kyoto?

Question:

I'm planning my trip to japan in October (7 days trip). Flying in to Narita Airport, what would be the best transportations/ routes to get from NRT to Kamakura -> Kyoto -> Nara -> back to NRT. Will a JR pass a good idea?

Thanks

Answer:

Definitely use JR trains.

Here is a simple example.

From NRT to Kamakura
Take Keisei Main Line or Narita Express (Those go to Ueno from NRT (Ueno is one district of Tokyo) ) Narita express is more expensive but much faster than keisei main line (local train).
Once you arrive at Ueno station, you need to go to Ueno station of JR and take Keihin-Tōhoku Line that goes to Ofuna, which is one of the major stations in Kamakura.
Make sure to take the south-bound train. if you take the train that goes the opposite direction, it goes north.

From Kamakura to Kyoto
You may need to go back to Tokyo from kamakura to take a bullet train called Shinkansen (Specifically, Tokaido Shinkansen) to go to Kyoto. Most people prefer to use this because they can see Mt. Fuji clearly. Avoid to take a local train to go to Kyoto from Kamakura since it takes a lot of time.

From Kyoto, you can go to Nara with Nara line.

From Kyoto to Tokyo, take the same bullet train.
From Tokyo, you go back to NRT via Ueno.

Here is the link of the stations of JR <>http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/routemaps/index.html> and there are other official website of the train company that nicely gives all the info so that you can plan.

In Tokyo, Kamakura, and Kyoto, all the JR station names are written in English and announcement are made with English along with Japanese.

By the way, If you lost the your way, ask police officers or JR staff (it may be weird to ask in the U.S.). They are willing to help you.
Some of them can speak English but you may need to speak very very slowly.

Want to live in Japan, but...?

Question:

I'm not sure how I can. I read it's very expensive to live there. Also, I have to go to college or a university for 4 years to get a work visa, or something? Can someone go a little more deeper and explain this to me a little bit more thoroughly? I also hear that you have to have a job waiting for in Japan before you can move there? Please can someone help me out here?!

Answer:

Ryan, the Japanese government requires us to have a four year degree to qualify for a work visa. To get the work visa you need to have a job offer before you get there. About the only jobs we can get are those that a Japanese can't or won't do. You need to have a special skill a Japanese doesn't have.

Best way to travel in japan?

Question:

Hey, planning on a 7 day vacation japan this august.
first 2 nights will be spent in tokyo. the other 5 nights will be spent in these places: hiroshima, Osaka/Kyoto, Tokyo and hakone. places are fine and hotels would be easy to book too.

now my question is: what would be the easiest, most flexible and economical way to travel around these places.
our choices are:

1) 3 japan rail passes for around 89,000 yen. but then the extra cost would include lots of taxi trips to/from hotel and sightseeing sights, extra sightseeing tours. the total cost would then come to around 149000 yen

2) rent a car for 5 days with pick up from tokyo shinjuku and drop off at narita. that would come to around 62000 yen (including drop off charge). including toll, parking and misc costs, the total comes to around 142,000 yen. with a smaller car, this goes down to around 125,000.

costs are similar and in my opinion, the car is more flexible, but if i take the car, then i wont be able to experience the bullet train. but the train saves time.

so which one should i go for?

thanks!

Answer:

Train, hands down. You have no idea what you are getting into when you take a car. If the car has a navigation system that would help, but you'll have trouble setting it or find it impossible. Traffic jams, well, I hate traffic.

And you don't have to use a taxi to get to sightseeing spots. I've been all over Kyoto and only took a taxi because I had a friend with me and he was getting a bit worn out. My sister went to Hiroshima to the Peace Memorial and I think a castle and never took a taxi. My cousin went from Osaka to Tokyo to Mt. Fuji to Hakone and back to Osaka and never took a taxi.

Trains, hands down.

EDIT: Station to hotel. Check at the ends of your legs. There are these things called 'feet'. Really, walking is a source of transportation here. If you are in Tokyo, hotel and station go hand in hand. If the hotel has a website, it almost certainly will have a map indicating the nearest station.

As for tours, those aren't my bailiwick. I know you can book them online.

What is the best for present from japan?

Question:

origami?sushi?arashi's DVD,CD? kimono?yukata?

i wanna go to a lot of countries and i wanna heve a lot of fun!

Answer:

I don't believe there is anything as a 'best present'. People's taste are different. If you are worried that the recipient won't like your gift, just sneak (somehow) in a conversation the kind of stuff they like and hopefully take it from there

Talking to Japanese people, how to ask for permission to talk in casual form?

Question:

I'm hosting a Japanese student and I want to talk to her in plain/casual form rather than formally. How do I ask her that? Or do I just immediately start talking informally to her? I've emailed her a few times, the majority was in English but where I wrote Japanese, I used ます form.

Answer:

Ask this.

タメ語で話してもいいでしょうか?
tamego de hanashitemo iideshouka?

plain form = tamego

Question about japanese yukata/kimono....?

Question:

tomorrow i'll be wearing a yukata (summer kimono) for the first time for a school performance . im just wondering do u wear a singlet or something underneath it? Is it complicated to put it on? and, what do i do if the yukata is too big because i think the ones we have are all free size, and im small for my age so im afraid it'll be too long or something? is there anyway to fold it or anything? LASTLY, how do u do your hair when wearing a yukata? any not-too-complicated japanese hairstyles?? :) THANK YOU.

Answer:

Technically speaking, there are special slips made for wearing under yukata and kimono. However, you can get away with something like a full-body dress slip or a low-necked t-shirt (or tank top) and a skirt slip if you don't have a proper yukata slip.

There are many many videos on YouTube about how to put on yukata. I would start with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCZtGi21y… (the link to the second half should be on the right or should pop up after the video ends). If you don't like those two, search YouTube for "how to wear yukata." Some basic rules include that you must ALWAYS cross the yukata left over right, that the front panels should completely overlap, and that women's yukata will have a special tuck at the waist (called an ohashori) that appears as part of the process of adjusting the yukata to your height.

You can do pretty much anything that you want with your hair. Most people these days don't wear traditional Japanese hair styles, even with kimono -- and definitely not with yukata. Any kind of up-do that pulls your hair up off your neck will be fine. You could consider adding a few cloth flowers to your hair (thing the kinds you can find at places like Claire's) if you have them, though any kind of decorative hair items (like ribbons or pretty combs) will work for yukata. However, you should avoid chopsticks and pretty much anything that looks like them like the plague. Chopsticks are not used as hair accessories in Japan and are totally inappropriate for wearing with kimono and yukata.

Am I too tall to wear heels in Japan?

Question:

I'm going to Japan next year for 4 weeks, I'm 5'3" and small framed and I was wondering if I wore like 8cm heels, I'd be 168cm (about 5'6").
Would that be too tall? Or will it look weird or good.
ps. I'm a girl! XD

Answer:

No.

Does the song Tong Hua by Guang Liang have some japanese in it after the girl collaspes in the MV?

Question:

I was watching the MV on youku, and after the girl collapses he doesn't sing in mandarin, but I think probably japanese. I'm not entirely sure since I don't recognize much japanese.

Answer:

Found it on YouTube and, yeah, I think it IS Japanese.

It sounds like "You know I love you but questions about Chinese songs on a forum having to do with traveling in Japan, well, it kinda' makes you go HUH?"

So, final answer, yes.
