Is a trip to Japan worth the money?

Question:

Basing this question on the current conversion rate of about 78 yen to 1.00 USD.

I have been wanting to go to Japan for years, and with finishing school and about to start working, I thought the transition time would be perfect. After researching my plans on flight, stay (hostels), and transportation (JR pass), the price is pretty steep. The total price would be about 2,000$ for 2 weeks, or the price a family of 4 could go on a 7-day cruise. I have been extremely excited about going on this trip, but everyone I talk to says I'm a fool for spending so much money on one trip. Although everyone who has said that has never left the US to go overseas.

Just wondering what people who have gone would say of if the experience was worth the cost. I'm going not just for relaxation, but to learn about the culture and see the sights as well.

Side note: Once I get back from the trip, i'll have roughly 1000$ left to my name while I search for a job. Don't have any bills to pay, living with family still.

Answer:

Short answer, yes. Best international trip of my life. I blogged about my trip and budget, link below, check out the video as well, I love Tokyo and can't wait to go back!

Black girl joins AKB48?

Question:

Do you think it would be possible for a black girl to become a AKB48 member?

Answer:

Anything's possible, especially in Japan.

The girl would have to have a Japanese aura to her though. Some non-Japanese can pull that off, some can't. If I could seriously look at that girl and think that she's just like the other girls, then I think she'd have a chance.

How to properly prepare a bento box for a loved one?

Question:

In Japan, when preparing a bento box for a love one (boyfriend, husband, etc..)..
should it be made to look cutsey like in photos or just regularly packed with food?!

In other words.. would it seem too childish/embarrassing for someone (an adult)
to be seen by their peers eating a bento that's overly decorative??!

OR is that something you would want others to see you have??..(..a decorative bento).

Answer:

There is no rule for bento.
But in my personal experience,
For little kids, Japanese mum make it colourful and fun to make their lunch time fun.
My mother used to cut apple in a Rabbit shape for me.
When I was a teenager,
I asked my mother to make my bento much prettier with yummy stuff then I was happy at lunch time with friends.
I don’t think boys actually care about these things.
They are just happy if it is tasty. How it look is not important.

When I cooked bento for my ex-boyfriend for dating, I put so much effort to prove I can cook and am good at.

But,... to be honest, I can’t be bothered cooking such a fancy bento every day.

Typical Japanese businessman’s bento ( made by Japanese wife) is leftover meal from last dinner, scrambled egg(Japanese style), rice and sour plum etc.
But….The most important thing is LOVE.
Without love, you can’t make any nice bento for your loved one.
Whatever you cook, if it is filled by your love, they would appreciate it.

How do I go to Japan?

Question:

I know you just can't hop up and go just like that. Like don't you need a passport?
If you need a passport how do you get one? Thanks.

Answer:

Why don't you start with Google? Try Googling "Process for obtaining a passport". My guess is that if you don't know how to get a passport without asking here, you are either too young to make the trip (would require parental consent for passport and flight, plus you have to be 18 to rent a hotel room), or you lack the general mental skills for such a trip. But you 'play pretend' and start with Google.

Have you called Japan Airlines in the U.S.A? If so, were they very helpful?

Question:

I want to book a reservation with a person not over the web. I called another carrier and they didnt help much so I was thinking of trying JAL.

Anyone have any good luck with fares or at least good service?
Share bad experiences too if you want.

Answer:

The Japanese airlines JAL and ANA both have good reputations for service and flying on time. Both also have at least one special discount economy class airfare, but in general you will still do better by calling up a travel agent and booking through them. If you insist on speaking to a person that is fine; there are numerous Japanese agencies like HIS, IACE, Amnet, JTB, and Kintetsu.
Remember though that cheaper tickets usually have more restrictions - make sure you know what the date change and refund charges are.

What are some interesting Japanese websites written primarily in kana?

Question:

Do you know of any fun, funny, or interesting Japanese websites that are in hiragana and katakana?

The topic really doesn't matter, but I would love it to be about jpop, working in Japan, food, fashion, etc.

Answer:

The problem with this is that no Japanese website will write in purely hiragana and katakana. They will, of course, use kanji (and lots of it). Unless you find a learning resource that also happens to cover these topics, I don't think you are going to have much luck.

One thing I recommend is using Firefox and downloading the rikaichan add-on so that you have a built-in JPN→ENG dictionary when browsing the internet. All you have to do is hover over the words you don't know with your mouse and their reading/definition will pop up. It's very useful for navigating Japanese websites.

What other Asian country besides Japan should I visit?

While I certainly plan to travel throughout Japan, I'm considering visiting one other Asian country during this time. I can only afford to go to one and can't decide which one to go to.

Answer:

I loved china particularly shanghai, but make sure you go all over Japan! Tokyo is by far my favorite international city!

Love japanese girls but also really nervous around them?

Question:

Hi I'm 14 years old, i'm caucasian and English.
I'm not sure why, I just love Japanese girl but I do, they are always so kind and nurturing not to mention the great looks! but the trouble is, I am always really really-reeeaaallly shy around them, like more shy than I am around caucasian girls I'm not sure why this is, I haven't met many japanese people could this be a reason? It's so annoying because the thing I would love most would be to go to Japan but I'm too scared because I'm so shy around them.

Answer:

Good answer 3day.
Hey bud, I was nervous around girls when I was 14. I had enough hormones to power the island of Manhattan for six weeks.... Those kind of mess with your sense of perception. Perhaps you find Japanese girls particularly attractive and thus particularly difficult to talk to... Understood, and there are some foxy, foxy Japanese girls in the world.

What you do is gradually build up expertise talking to girls and get advice from guys who've been there done that. At the same time recognize that you may not be a ladies' man. AKA "douchebag" like those guys on Jersey Shore. GOOD! You're a normal guy...Good on you.

All I can say is take a look at the guys here married to Japanese girls: I have Yoda as my avatar and he's probably better looking (and a smoother talker) than I am. The rest I won't point out, but they are just normal folks with no superpowers.
You do need confidence, don't get me wrong. But it comes with time and experience. Let me give you one piece of advice-----don't wait to come to Japan to get a girlfriend. You telling me you find white girls completely unattractive? You need to have a relationship with girl(s) before Japan. Anyway, why wait? You're practically jumping out of your skin at the sight of girls, but before too long some of your friends will have girlfriends or dates and can arrange a group date or fix you up with someone. Girls (and some guys) love playing matchmaker, especially with a nice but shy boy. Japanese girls are not particularly difficult to date, but to be in a relationship with one is challenging at times. (If you don't speak the language that's even worse.) Having some experience--I don't mean sex, I mean relationships and approaching women.
Especially with the internet nowadays, you can find people so much easier. And you can communicate through writing/text at first before speaking to them. Good luck.

Cellular Network Japan?

Question:

Hi, I am traveling from India to Japan with a Blackberry 9800 phone. My phone is unlocked. I would like to know what cellular networks are there in Japan and who all support a blackberry network, I would prefer a prepaid sim with low India calling but that is not mandatory. My foremost requirement is a prepaid sim with blackberry support. My stay is for 5 days in and around Tokyo city.

Thanks

Answer:

You'll need a Japanese address / resident of Japan to purchase a prepaid sim card.

The only real options you have are to rent a phone at the airport or to rent a sim card at the airport to input into your blackberry.

How are bisexual men viewed in Japan?

Question:

How are bisexual men who openly date men and women (and admit to having sex with both men and women) viewed? It is a positive, negative, or neutral stance? Any related information on the topic would be helpful. Are Japanese people more likely to stay clear of dating bisexual men? In America, a lot of people stereotype bisexual men as being gay or promiscuous so I'm just curious what it's like to be a bisexual man in Japan? Are bisexual foreign men treated differently than bisexual Japanese men? Is it considered more acceptable for a foreigner to be bisexual? Thanks for answering.

Answer:

I don't think there are more than 10 "bisexual male teen" in Japan. It could be 0. But I'm not sure.

Anyway, there are extremely few like that. So you will be seen as someone very rare.

Is it considered rude if you don't bow to someone you know or talk to in Japan?

Question:

Are martial arts more popular and practiced in places like Japan than in America?

Question:

My friend and I are taking a tour of Japan. Its a big trip we've been planning for about two years. Another friend of our is also planning to come with us too. He mentioned that Martial Arts are very popular and practiced in Japan. Is this true or is my friend using a stereotype as fact? He made it sound like it was a general knowledge and practice there like elementary school is to America.

Answer:

No, it's not 'general knowledge and practice there like in elementary school is to America.' WAY overstated.

But my daughter was in the judo club for a while when she started junior high school. For a same school they had a rather large team. And quite a few of my students participate in one martial art or another. One elementary school near my house has a sumo ring outside, though that's not a martial art. I was riding my bike home from the station a couple of nights ago and there was a kendo practice session for kids going on in the elementary school. You see young Japanese kids with their kyudo (archery) equipment on trains.

I think it would be accurate to say that a larger percentage of young Japanese are involved in some martial art as compared to the U.S. But nothing like what your friend is saying. Ignorant people are prone to exaggerate at times.

Why the word JAP is allowed on Yahoo answers?

Question:

for us Japanese , nothing is so offensive as foreigners call us Japs , on this yahoo answers, whenever I saw this word, I reported these questions, but they ve never be deleted.
on the other hand, when I asked "Thais really respect their king?"to the category of Thailand, the question was deleted quickly. and I asked the same question ""do Japanese really respect their Emperor?" to this category. this question was not deleted, what is this standard? why Yahoo is sensitive to certain question of certain people? and our sentiment is completely ignored?

Answer:

You're not the only one to report them. I report them every single time I see such a post.

EDIT: Well, almost always report such posts. Exception 1- I've read it where I think the person posting is Japanese. Exception 2- The average age of the user here is rather low. Sometimes I don't think that they mean any insult, they're just ignorant. In those cases I'll usually simply point out that such is generally not acceptable.

Also, TheCheapest is correct on how posts get yanked. At least my understanding of the process. The relative standing of the person being reported and that of the person doing the report might matter. But it generally requires more than one report for a post to get yanked. And that's what Y!A says about the situation on the page where you report abuse.
