What happened to the japanese canadains in internment camps? and why were they put there?

Question:

Answer:

Well, they were housed cheaply and inadequately, underfed and used as farm labour. Meanwhile all their property was confiscated and sold on the cheap. Then after the war, the Canadian government tried to deport them to Japan regardless of their Canadian citizenship. In truth, by comparison the Japanese-Americans had it good.

They were put there out of racism and the fear of espionage.

What happened to Canadian soldiers in Hong Kong & why did they lose?

Question:

world war 2, when Canadains were sent to pow camps

Answer:

The Canadians in Hong Kong got their butts kicked [like every other army that faced the Japanese did back then, pretty much for the same reasons].

By 1941 Canada had been in WW2 for a few years, there was a Canadian contingent in France before it fell, Canadian pilots and ground crew in the Battle of Britain, our Navy busy fighting the Battle of the Atlantic... but the troops we sent to garrison Hong Kong were exactly that - garrison troops. Not trained much, not well supplied - certainly not for war.

When the Japanese launched their attack, any air support was wiped out pretty quickly what little there was, the British Navy was mostly busy in the Atlantic theatre, and and help of any kind just wasn't available. So you've got the seasoned Japanese who have been fighting [eg in Manchuria] since 1933 outnumbering the Allied garrison troops. The Canadians like all Allied soldiers there fought like lions... but the outcome was bleak. Even the commanding Brigadier and Colonel were killed defending their position.

The Battle of Hong Kong
http://wwii.ca/page42.html
The Winnipeg Grenadiers, Hong Kong. Dec 6-25 1941
http://www.wwii.ca/index.php?page=Page&a…

When they were sent to POW camps they were basically forced labour, worked to death or lucky to survive. Approximately 290 Canadian soldiers were killed in battle and while in captivity 264 more died as POWs, for a total death toll of 554.

Martyrs who have lost their lives fighting for rights?

Question:

Just thinking to myself today and, looking at the history of mankind, it seems pretty repetitive and kinda depressing. It mostly consists of people killing each other, wars, more people killing each other, genocide, so on so fourth... Then every once in a while a good person comes around and says "Hey, that's wrong!", tries teaching people to love and be nice, and then people kill them for it.
Was hoping people could list some more martyrs, or people that have inspired you, and have lost their lives, sacrificing everything, for the sake of human decency.
Examples: Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Jesus, etc

Answer:

The history texts fed to young Americans in academic settings are so sadly bereft of history, and sadly these so-called texts of learning are so often deliberately self-censored, one would not be far off the mark simply to regard them as obligatory works of history that do not cause young Americans to question historical events or to think of historical events as meaningful. History in such settings becomes an ornament to indoctrination - a sad lie that passes for truth and gives one a 'credential..'

Martyrs? Quan Duc set himself on fire in Vietnam and his blazing death became a famous photograph circulated internationally. He was protesting the Vietnam War and the US/Diem govt. persecution of Buddist people... Alice Herz - a reknown peace activist and a jew who had escaped Nazi Germany , set herself on fire at age 82 in the USA in protest of the mass murdering napalming of Vietnamese children by US forces. The Japanese author Shino Shibata started a peace fund dedicated in her name. In Berlin there was a street named for her called Alice Herz Plaza. Also, in 1965, Norman Morrison - age 31 - carried his 1yr.old daughter with him, then handed her to friends in the crowd, and walked to the floor below William Macnamara's office and set himself on fire to protest the 1000's of children killed by the US napalming of Vietnam. In 1970, at the University of California , ayoung man with the last name Winn<he was an ROTC student and a Business school graduate> wrote a note that said 'God Stop This War in Vietnam' and then set himself ablaze and died. For years into the 1980's people have tried to have his site of martryrdom recognized by a plaque - but the University Administration has forbidden it... There are several others in that period who also burned themselves alive in protest of the Vietnam War.

The Vietnamese monk Quan Duc was noted to have burned to death - but his heart survived and was put on display. For weeks after the incident, there were people in the streets reporting to have seen his reurrected figure and to have seen the appearance of Buddah in the clouds of the sky. He and all these martyrs did not die in vain. I tend to always think of them whenever I hear some Fox News or MSNBC news anchor make flippant remarks about the Vietnam War as if the protestors were just a bunch of kids, as if the protests were trivial or superficial childish acts of protesting... In the case of Mr. Winn the reknown philosopher Herbert Marcuse spoke at his memorial.

Isn't it strange that US student grow up and never learn these things in history texts about the Vietnam War. Is it not Orwellian? Abbie Hoffman was reportedly arrested almost 50x's during the War and repeatedly beaten. In the demonstrations at Berkely there were students killed. Most US school text will mention Kent State - but that's about it. One will never for example in such text read MLKjr's speeches where he discusses a favorable understanding of the marxian dialectic and his strong opposition to the war. Martyrs abound.

My favorite martyr to study in American history is Joe Hill, the poet and IWW activist who was put to death by a Utah firing squad due to his Marxian beliefs despite protests from all over the world. One rarely finds him at all in American text books, yet his funeral was said to be the largest funeral in all of American history.

In Alabama, there is the home of Helen Keller. She kept always a Red Communist Flag on her desk. The state of Alabama removed it and placed a state of Alabama flag in its place - and the historical site has been totally stripped of any references to socialism/communism which was the heart and soul of her activism. Self-Censorship is a strange thing. I would include Helen Keller as a martyr since the state of Alabam has done so much to this very day to hide her beliefs and make her into something harmless and contrived. Her being silenced so by the state makes her aa martyr.

Was hitler responsible for more deaths than anyone due to ww2?

Question:

some say stalin killed more ppl but since hitler started ww2 he was theirfore responsible for more deaths than stalins purge? he also brainwashed his own ppl! theirfore would this not make him responsible for ALL the deaths off ww2 in europe?

Answer:

The Nazis weren't even close. The PRC murdered more than 73,000,000 and the USSR murdered more than 61,000,000. Not counting battlefield casualties, the Nazis come in a poor third with something in excess of 12,000,000 to 13,000,000. Even if you count the battlefield casualties and clitoral damage (much of it caused by the allies and the Japanese, not the Nazis) WW II only cost about 55,000,000 lives total and still comes in third place behind the two Communist giants.

Standard Oil IG Farben Texaco Made so Much out of WW2 it has never been disclosed
the Politicians were Claiming Neutrality and Isolationism when Prescott Bush Rockefeller Warburg Owner of the Chase Manhattan Bank FDR Lindbergh saw a way of Making Billions used JP Morgan to set Up the Hitler Fund to finance Hitler at great profits that is why Chase Manhattan Bank remained Open Up to July 1944 so the NAZIS could deposit the americans Profits

How does the seating work at Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo?

Question:

I am trying to buy floor seats for a concert that will be held at the Yoyogi National Stadium...but the ticket information is really confusing. Plus the seating chart on the website does not show the arrangement of the floor seating.

http://naash.go.jp/yoyogi/sisetu/ichitai/tabid/67/Default.aspx

I am assuming the blue and pink are the "arena" seats, aka NOT floor seats? I just need to make sure the purple area is definitely the floor seats. Also the picture here: http://park1.aeonnet.ne.jp/~tamu/kaijo/yoyogi/ayu0804.jpg. The labels are confusing. "Stando" means floor seating, I am pretty sure. NOT the side-seats, aka "arena" seats. I just want to confirm this so that I buy the tickets that I actually want! Thank you. If there's a better picture of the venue seating, please provide a link, thank you!!!

Answer:

I think you need to define your "arena" or "floor" seat first. You are using a lot of words. And it's already confusing.

The allocation of seats varies, depending on each event. So the seat on your 1st link does not have much significance because it's just a general map of Yoyogi Stadium.

Teaching english in japan help and tips?

Question:

After I graduate college I wanna teach english in Japan. What city in japan do u recommend me teaching at I want something where it's not far to get to Osaka. Do u recommend me teaching middle school or high school. And how can I be a good teacher to them And if u have taught or u are teaching in japan can u tell me your expieriences :)

Answer:

As other posters pointed out, you need to write proper English.
Many smart high school students in Japan can write better English than you do.
Do you know the fact that we learn English for six years before going to college? Our English education is focused on reading and writing. Conversation is not emphasized; because we don't need to speak it as long as we are living in Japan.
Those who have ambitions to work in international field practice conversational skills while they are in universities. Most of their international studies are conducted in English by native English-speaking professors with Ph.D.

Do you want to work at an "English conversation school" in Japan? Most Japanese look down on those "native speakers of English" working for those suspicious "schools" who cannot spell their own language. We know most of the "teachers" for "English conversation schools" in Japan are losers who failed to get a decent job back home. None of those "English conversation schools" is not authorized as an formal educational institution by the Japanese government; none of their workers is qualified to be called a "teacher." In fact, they are least respected foreign workers in Japan. Do you want to be one of them?

How did the global context of Western colonial domination shape Japanese politics and national identity?

Question:

The Meiji State developed during the era of High Imperialism. How did the global context of Western colonial domination shape Japanese politics and national identity during the Meiji Period.

Answer:

It would appear the Japanese who were empowered at the time looked, again, to the West and began to develop western 'progress', such as a strong military and a central government as opposed to feudalism. They even introduced a decimal-based currency. This could be compared to the Italian Renaissance - the era in Japan was called the 'Meiji Restoration'.

Recommended Cooking books? (international?)?

Question:

Hi! I'm looking for a bunch of cooking books to buy but I can't seem to figure out which ones. I'm interested in cooking foods from a variety of cultures. Such as italian, french, turkish, japanese, russian, chinese, german, greek, mediterranean. the list could go on. but i'm looking for books that can help me make traditional/authentic food from that country. for example if a recipe is asking for a ingredient that has to sit out, or squeeze or peel etc and the recipe just wants you to buy it pre preprepared i don't want it. I want to also know the techniques and the correct measurements (like i heard somewhere that an onion in america is equivalent to 3-4 onions in india) i don't know if thats right but i hope im wording myself correctly. Here are some books I think would be good, but if you know a better one can you please tell me and where to buy it. Thank you!
Here is a list
1) La Cucina: The Regional cooking of italy by the italian academy of cuisine
2) Mastering the art of french cooking by Julia Child
3)Arabesque: A taste of morrocco, turkey, and lebanon by claudia roden
4) Food of life: ancient persian and modern iranian cooking and ceremonies najmeih batmanglij
5) The complete middle east cook book by Tess Mallos
6) the classical cookbook by andrew dalby
7)Around the roman table: food and feasting in ancient rome

So yeah, those were just a couple, im just really indecisive. if you have any suggestions please say! and if you know any good books of herbs and spices and ancient cooking (rome, greece, persia, china, india) all that jazz. sorry if this is a lot

What is the name of that sushi that has the Flying fish Roe thats black on it?

Question:

Just name any type of sushi with fish eggs on it :)

Answer:

I have never seen black flying fish roe as it is usually an orange colour... or green if mixed with wasabi. If what you had was black, it was most likely a type of caviar, usually made from the roe of the sturgeon fish, and not a traditional type of sushi. Here are the main varieties of fish roe that are enjoyed in Japanese cuisine.

Tobiko - Flying Fish Roe
Small orange coloured fish eggs which are typically used on the outside of an inside out sushi roll.

Masago - Capelin Roe
Very similar to tobiko, but slightly smaller and less transparent. Used in similar ways too.

Ikura - Salmon Roe
Larger sized eggs with a semi-translucent appearance and an orange dot in the centre. They have an odd sensation of popping in one's mouth when you eat them, but are a classic delicacy in Japanese cuisine. They can be used as a topping on sushi, or served with fish topped rice bowls too.

Kazunoko - Herring Roe
A light yellow coloured roe that is usually dried in the sun or pickled in salt. It has a slightly hard texture, and the small individual eggs clump together to make a larger piece which again, is most commonly used as a sushi topping, or served at New Year.

Tarako - Cod Roe / Pollock Roe
Tarako is very small pink/orange coloured roe that are usually from pollock, although the name tara means cod. They are served still in the membrane and have a salty taste making it a popular filling for onigiri rice balls, or mixed with spaghetti. Also has a spicy variety called Mentaiko.

Uni - Sea Urchin Roe
Uni is very small, light brown coloured roe which has a unique taste and smooth, almost buttery texture. Like all the other roe here, it is most commonly used as a topping for sushi.

Where can I find a relatively cheap flight from Okinawa to Tokyo?

Question:

I looking of trip advisor and it was $1000 plus...that's how much my flight from the states cost! Is there a website that has cheaper flights? I only want to go for a day or so.

Thanks!

Answer:

Look into JAL's Yokoso Airpass or Welcome to Japan fare; or ANA's Star Alliance Japan Airpass or Visit Japan Fare. (The former for each airline respectively is cheaper and you need to take that airline or one in their frequent flier mileage alliance). You need to get them before you arrive in Japan, and allow a maximum of 5 flights to nearly every airport in the country. It is a huge savings over regular airfare - often less than half the cost per flight.

How is japan doing now?

Question:

I just saw an old clip of how everything was but i hvent heard anything media wise and i was just wondering

Answer:

99% + of Japan is fine. But there's still a lot of problems in the areas that was hardest hit by the tsunami. Thousands of people are still homeless. They've found higher counts of radiation in some kids than there should be.
There's still a 20km no go zone around the nuclear plant facility. I hear there's still a problem with radioactive water leaking from one of the plants.
TEPCO isn't telling us everything. And they're being told not to.

A question for fluent Japanese speakers?

Question:

Is it true that you can only use ''Ja ne'' if you are going to see the person later that day, not tomorrow or the next day, and you cannot use ''Dewa matta ashita'' if you are going to see them some other time that is not specifically tomorrow?

Answer:

No. Ja ne is more casual and just means 'see you later', there is no specific time limit - although it's not often used if you are going to see them a short time later that day. Dewa mata is also conversational but a bit more formal, and means the same thing; but since ashita means tomorrow it means you will presumably see them the next day.

Japanese music suggestions!? :D?

Question:

My favorite artist is Ayaka. I LOVE her. :)

Aqua Timez is also very good.

Last for best, Kanon Wakeshima has to be my all time favorite. I first found her through Vampire Knight :)

Hope I helped!

If someone jumps in front of a train and it's delayed, do they just list it as "passenger injury"?

Question:

I was just on the JR Yamanote line... It stopped for a long time and the conductor made several announcements on the intercom, but I couldn't understand it with my poor Japanese. Then we went for one or two stops while the screen inside said there was a "passenger injury", stopped again for even longer, and continued on another train on the other side of the platform... I understand people get injured, but it seemed too delayed for someone to just break their leg on car #3---it takes a while to clean up a suicide in the middle of the route. D:

Sorry for asking such a question, but I'm suspicious!

Answer:

Well, the screen can show you only the words registered in its computer. So I don't think the screen has much more words other than "passenger injury".
