If I want to practice "sumi e" painting but don't have Japanese ink, can I do it with a water color?

Question:

Or acrylic. (I've posted this in the painting category but no response, maybe in Japan's section someone knows.)

Answer:

You need to use an inkstick. It produces a different and distinct texture and quality than ordinary water color or acrylic I think. It doesn't have to be a "Japanese inkstick" (sumi). You can use any inkstick available in your country. Brushes are also important.

Are black women considered beautiful and desirable in japanese culture?

Question:

I'm really interested in Japanese culture and would one day (despite the disaster that happened recently) to travel there. I'll admit that at some times I feel that black is not that beautiful because of all the hatred and racism I've seen and experienced towards people like me, black people in America. I would expect other countries to have their own negative and positive views on African Americans and other races and that's totally fine.

But one thing that I've really noticed and hear a lot about Japan is that Caucasian women are on billboards and are highly respected and thought of as desirable and exotic. I'm not hating on white women or white people in general but I'm really curious if Japan finds black women to be beautiful, desirable, or exotic like white women?

I'm a light skinned black woman with brownish red hair that reaches to the middle of my back and I have big hazel eyes. I'm 5'6" and I guess I'm considered curvy yet not fat in any way. But I continue to hear mixed reviews that, someone of my features is considered odd looking where as some say I'm beautiful. I know it depends on the person but I'd like to know if, in general, Japan finds African American women to be as beautiful as Caucasian women. Your information would be very helpful especially since I find myself attracted to Asian men particularly Japanese men.

Thank You :)

Answer:

>Are black women considered beautiful and desirable in japanese culture?

Honestly,no. I have not seen any Japanese media treating black women as beautiful or desirable.

>But one thing that I've really noticed and hear a lot about Japan is that Caucasian women are on billboards and are highly respected and thought of as desirable and exotic.

This is not true, either. Some medias treat white women as models. But it does not mean that many Japanese men want to date with white women. The most desirable people in Japan are fellow Japanese.

The truth is that more and more young Japanese men and women are getting reluctant to have a date. Most Japanese prefer Japanese partner. But many are choosing to stay single.

This survey by Japanese government shows this fact.
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=201105…

This is in Japanese. But I won't give you its detail because it's going to be long. If you can read Japanese, you can see its detail.

There are often this kind of survey results in recent years, all saying that many Japanese men and women do not have a partner.

Japanese Question help me!?

Question:

Hello, I have been studying Japanese I know Both Hiragana and kakatana by heart working on kanji, but even though I know hiragana and kakatana when I watch Japanese TV i know the symbols and translate it to hiragana but I don't know the English translation how do I understand the English meaning if I just know the Hiragana meaning how to translate hiragana and kaktana into english.

Answer:

By studying.

And by the way, I live in Korea, and the subtitles are often WRONG. I don't speak enough Korean or read fast enough to make an effective translation, but I DO know that often the subtitles have a question mark, and the American movie they're playing did not ask a question. Or sometimes they guy will say "no" but the Hongul says "yes."

And it sounds like something's wrong here with your question - you don't translate katakana into hiragana - they represent the same sounds. You need a Japanese dictionary, but that doesn't always work quite right.

I use translate.google.com, and it works well enough but sometimes it doesn't translate quite right - multiple definitions and such.

But the short answer is: by studying more vocabulary, start with things people commonly say, like pleasantries - good morning, etc.

Can someone help translate this to Japanese?

Question:

Please help translate this. I don't know enough Japanese to translate these kinds of sentences. Thank you!

Was japan aware in any way that the United States was gonna drop an Atomic Bomb?

Question:

For my history class we have a court case to whether harry truman is innocent or not for the blood shed and id like to know if japan was aware in any way of the Atomic Bomb

Answer:

No, Japan was not aware of that
By the end of July, 1945, Japan was ready to surrender by accepting the Potsdam Declaration: .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potsdam_Dec…
As you can see, the Allied Powers forced Japan to accept "Unconditional Surrender," but Japanese government desperately requested one condition: "Save the life of the Emperor." The Final talks took place between Tokyo and Washington (through telegrams, I believe): however, the Allied Powers did not accept Japanese request, which delayed Japan's surrender.

Then, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima (August 6th) and Nagasaki (August 9th). By the end of July 1945, almost all the cities in Japan had been destroyed by the carpet bombings by US Air Force, which killed approx 800,000 Japanese civilians prior to the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The "Tokyo Air Raid" on March 10, 1945 alone killed 100,000 civilians. So, the civilians in Japan were deadly scared of US carpet bombings on their cities, but, they knew nothing about atomic bombs.

BTW, the US did not know how deadly the atomic bombs were either. So, they needed to make sure the power of their two nuclear bombs (uranium bomb on Hiroshima and plutonium bomb on Nagasaki). They didn't care how many "Japs" would be killed. As a result, 140,000 and 80,000 civilians (not military personnel) were slaughtered in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the spot (a large number of other victims were died of nuclear radiation-related diseases afterwords).

The Japanese government might have been aware of US development of nuclear weapons and their experimental detonations in the desert of Nevada, but Japanese civilians were not informed any of their new bombs until the last moment.

Edit:
If you want to know USF carpet bombings all over japan in 1945, please take a look at this.

Japan/English colleges?

Question:

I'm going to a local community college for my 2 year, but I'd like to transfer to a college in Japan to finish out my 4 year.
I know about Temple- but the 15,000 per year tuition is impossible for me, especially because I won't take out 30,000 in loans.

Do you know of any colleges in Japan that would accept American transfers, with a decent tuition? Even the equivalent of a community college would be fine.

Answer:

You can't transfer to any Japanese college after 2 years in US because Japan is another nation. Go to Temple or Lakeland or there is no option for you.

And basically no college in Japan has classes in English. You must learn Japanese to college level.

How do Japanese behave?

Question:

I don't ask this question to be stereotypical but i'm really curious of the how Japanese children are taught to behave, what characteristics are important for a male Japanese man.

Are ideal Japanese males like the anime characters - quiet, thoughtful, focussed or is that just anime. Is it better if your are a popular chatty guy

Living in Japan seems like an amazing experience, the language is amazing to, and the culture

Answer:

>Are ideal Japanese males like the anime characters -

Anime character is not ideal Japanese male. I think you have to start with stopping confusing anime with reality.

What parents tell kids, it depends on each family. I was born from Japanese parents. But they did not teach me anything, hahaha. I just did not have conversation with them when I was a kid.

>what characteristics are important for a male Japanese man.

Generally, parents tell sons to study and go to a good college, have a good job in the future.

What are some densely forested regions in Nippon in or around Kanto?

Question:

Again; more research for my RP ^^;
Thanks again so very much for your help in advance~ =)

Answer:

All the mountainous areas around the Kanto area are densely forested.
There is Tanzawa to the west (Sagami Pref.), Okutama north of that (Tokyo) , Chichibu to the north of that (Saitama Pref.) then Myogi-Haruna-Akagi (Gunma). I do not know much about Tochigi but it will be much the same. Just look on a map.

Japanese language question. . .?

Question:

I was wondering how you'd say (for example), "Are you on Facebook?"
The "facebook" part of it isn't important, the point is, how do you ask if someone
belongs to any site where you have your own profile, etc. Do you use suru or yaru or something else?

Answer:

I'd say "tsukau (to use)", i.e. "Facebook tsukatteru?" (informal) or "Facebook wo tsukatte imasuka?" (formal).

Can I get Feedback on my Idea for Authentic Ramen?

Question:

Can I get feedback on my Idea for Authentic Ramen?
I want to make authentic-style ramen and I have already looked up on making noodles from scratch and stuff, but I have questions about the flavor. Do you add Miso AND soy sauce or just one? And for the meat, I want to add Beef but I'm not sure how I should cook it. Would Teriyaki-marinated beef be good? Or should I use Broccoli Beef type marinade on it? (and if you can give the ingredients for the marinade that would be good). ~Thanks!~

Answer:

The idea of soy sauce kneaded noodle is already done in Japan.

Trip help please!!!!!?

Question:

I am able to go to India or costa rica for a student trip, and I can't decide where to go...which place is better, sunnier, prettier, which ones more fun!

Answer:

And you're asking this in Japan's category, lol. Anyway, India and Costa Rica are two very very different places. You must know what you're into more. India is more traditional and Costa Rica is more fun, I guess. Although, I think only you can make it fun, if you want to. So, because I live in India, I think some old places are amazing. If you like beaches, there is a good beach in Goa and Kerala (South India). If you like mountains (The Himalaya), you could try North India. Unless you go with a bunch of friends, you may realize that you can't quite relax in India though. Maybe because of the local people. They stare a lot at the foreigners and never smile. I can promise to you though that India is really very sunny if you don't come during the rain season.

I`m 14 but I want to live in Tokyo?

Question:

I`m 14, and I`ll be 15 in December.
I don`t have Asian blood, I`m completely American; though, I`ve really liked Japanese culture since I was a child. &&; I want to go to Tokyo.
I`m attending a public high school here, but do you think I could transfer to a high school in Tokyo?
Do Japanese high schools have entrance fees..?
What are some good Japanese high schools..?
What are some Japanese high school rules..? (ex. haircolor, uniform)
Is the radiation still as bad as it was?
Any advice for living in Tokyo will be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Obviously you are not fluent in Japanese, considering in one of your past questions you said "ULTRA KAWAII DESU YO NE~~~~~!!!"
I'm sorry to tell you but if you said this in Japan people will look at you like "wtf..."
I'm just saying. no one says ultra. that's only in anime.
If you think Japan is like in anime, you have it all wrong. I'm just saying.
Please get to know more of Japan's culture and continue studying Japanese.

As for transferring to a school, search for foreign exchange student programs. It would be impossible to go to a regular high school. High school requires entrance exams, which are very hard and Japanese middle school students study for hours and go to afterschool tutors everyday to prepare for these exams. And high school rules are different in every high school. We have very strict high schools where you can't dye your hair, and all the skirt lengths need to be a specific length, and very specific uniforms. Then there are others where you can dye hair, and you can cut your skirts really short, etc.

How can you get kimono in a kit like kimono slip, obi,the sandals, and ties when buying?

Question:

can you give me some web pages that sell new and used yukata and kimono and that ones that sell you like kits where they give you all you need to put on a yukata or kimono or just web pages that sell the kimono thank you for helping me

Answer:

Kimono generally do not come in sets. You buy the kimono and all of the items for it separately. Yukata sometimes come in sets and sometimes do not. Kimono Market Sakura offers some package options, where you can get the kimono or yukata, an obi, and a pair of geta for the set price. Ichiroya and Yamatoku sometimes sell kimono sets. These are usually a kimono and juban, but sometimes also include an obi. You may need to buy the other items separately. Some of the yukata sellers on eBay sell yukata sets of various kinds. Kyoto Collection and MZK Studio are two that come to mind and you might want to look at them. Rakuten may have a few yukata sets, especially as the yukata season gets closer.

Why we should donate to Japan?

Question:

I have this Japanese assignment and the task description is-
Japan has just suffered a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Sendai and neighbouring areas. So many people are suffering and homeless now. Your japanese class have decided to raise funds to ease the plight of those people. You will be given the opportunity to speak on assembly to persuade both teachers and students at your school to donate money to support Japan in its hour of need. (3 minute speech)
And im not being completely slack and just putting up this question for others to do, i just need ideas and i've already spent hours searching on google for like reasons why we should donate and that, but the results are like "Oh, dont donate to japan!" and "why donate to japan when its such a wealthy country, it doesnt need the money cuz they can just pay for their own damage" and that... i cant really find a decent website.
Also im really bad at speeches, so i dont know how to start my speech... like a beginning sentence to engage the audience in the first place...
But the main point! i cant find reasons why we should donate. I know like that japan helped other countries when they were in need like the US when katrina struck, and we should help them because japan would do the same for us, and countries should just help each other in desperate times.
But i cant just say that.. Like i need it to be more persuasive and sophisticated, because i need to speak in front of my school (hopefully people will be persuaded haha) and also i dont have that much information for 3 minutes..

Answer:

In order to explain why "Don't donate to Japan because they have a lot of money!" is retarded, I'm going to start out by asking WHY Japan is such a wealthy country? The country is not gifted in natural resources, it is the Japanese people that have built up Japan through effort and brains. We should donate to Japan because donating to Japan is not dumping money into a black hole like donating to poorer countries. Japan will actually make something of the donations. We keep dumping more and more humanitarian aid into poor countries that are not getting richer because the people themselves are of poor quality.

Sure, Japan will recover without our aid, but why is that a good reason not to help them out? When are we going to start helping people who help themselves? Japan deserves our help because they have earned it by working hard.

What classes are there in Japan? (The class system)?

Question:

Answer:

Rightly or wrongly, just about everyone in Japan considers themselves some variety of middle class. I will say that when all the student activists who manned the barricades back in the day became salarymen that killed any chance of consciousness raising in Japan. The major Japanese political parties do not align themsleves along class lines to even the extent that the Democrats and GOP do in the US. The political divide is more LDP=rural/DPJ=urban. The fact is that Japan's economic miracle has meant that even men without a lot of education could make decent money. I wouldn't say there is no such thing as discrimination against the burakumin anymore, but that whole issue is fading away. In spite of the present economic situation the low birthrate means that may continue. I don't think kabuki is necessarily a very good way to make money-that's not an easy life.
