If, ONLY if, japan chose to form military alliance with germany once more, would america object?

Question:

surely too many years have doubtless passed since end of the war that america ended - MOST brutally - with much atomic bombing of civilians. now, this is question: if, for whatever reason, let us say, the japanese people and military desired to make direct agreement with Germany again. would the u.s. object or no?

Answer:

There is no reason for Japanese to have an alliance with Germany now. No one wants it. So this question is meaningless even under "if" condition.

Question:

My brother promised to take me to Japan in two years, (I'll be 16) and I want to prepare as much as I can before-hand!
I know a few Japanese words like; Arigatou, Arigatou gozaimasu, Domo Arigatou gozaimasu, Nani, Watashi, Hai, Iie, konnichi wa, Ohayou Gozaimasu, Konban wa, kawaii, Sayonara, gomen nasai, Doko, Baka, Neko, Hon-to-ni, Wa-ta-shi-wa <name> desu, Ha-ya-ku, and Moshi Moshi...
Any other useful words/sentences that could help me?
I also read up on a few tips, like; Don't tip, don't talk on cellphones on train/bus, don't talk too loudly, don't point- turn palm face up and point with whole hand, no shoes inside, and don't leave chopsticks in bowl or something like that?
Any other tips for me?

Thanks so much!! Arigatou!

Answer:

You can find lots to read and learn at:

You'll find lots of romaji in Japan such as in train and subway stations, and many ticket machines and post office ATMs also have English. Some family restaurants have menus in English in bigger cities with more tourists, and many eateries have plastic models of their food next to their front doors, so if you can't read the menu, just take the waiter or waitress outside and point at what you want. Few speak English fluently, but if you get lost or something, find someone young, write out your question in simple words and they can probably help you.

Is the book "Lolita" famous in Japan?

Question:

Just wondering since the childish fashion is called Lolita fashion and a pedophile is called a lolicon.

Answer:

From Wikipedia

"The phrase is a reference to Vladimir Nabokov's book Lolita, in which a middle-age man becomes sexually obsessed with a twelve-year-old girl.[31] The term "Lolita complex" was first used in the early 1970s with the translation of Russell Trainer's The Lolita Complex and may have entered Japanese nomenclature at that time.[22] Shinji Wada used the word in his Stumbling upon a Cabbage Field (キャベツ畑でつまずいて, Kyabetsu-batake de Tsumazuite?),"

What's not mentioned here is that In Trainer's book, the term was used to describe little girls' obsession with adult males, so it's originally the other way around. (from Japanese Wiki)

My friend got Japanese blood but she was born in Puerto Rico?

Question:

My friend got Japanese blood but she was born in Puerto Rico?

and raised in puerto rico do she would be accept to become a Geisha? she is fluent in Japanese,Russian,English,Portuguese & Spanish. she look Japanese tough but her mom is no Japanese her father grandfather was Japanese. I think on her mom might been some Japanese too but her bioligical from tree from mother part is hard to find, sorry for bad english on a rush

Answer:

Ah, the every-popular "Can a foreigner become a geisha" question.

Short answer: Maybe, but it will be nearly impossible, especially if she wants to join a large and more well-known community like that in Kyoto.

Long answer: There have been four known (and three potential) foreign geisha in the entire history of the profession in Japan. One, Liza Dalby, was a graduate student of anthropology who was doing research for her doctoral dissertation (you can read the non-dissertation version in her book "Geisha"), worked for a couple of years in Kyoto's Pontocho district. The second, Fiona Graham, worked for a few years in Tokyo's Asakusa district. At first it seemed like she was doing research, then it seemed like she just wanted to make it a profession. She was allegedly fired this past February. The third, a Ukrainian woman named Eve, is currently working as a geisha in Anjo. The fourth, a Romanian woman named Isabella, is currently working in a district in Shizuoka. While I'm not sure about the history of Eve or Isabella, both Dalby and Graham had extensive experience with the Japanese language and culture before even attempting to become geisha -- for example, Graham graduated from a Japanese high school and Dalby had been studying the culture for years. Both could speak Japanese fluently, and both already knew basic cultural things that would be difficult for most non-natives to know. Dalby was already proficient at playing the shamisen, a traditional geisha instrument.

Just knowing Japanese or being Japanese is not enough, and while being and knowing Japanese are certainly assets, I would argue that being foreign no longer makes becoming a geisha an impossibility. But that doesn't mean it's easy, and the chances of it happening are very low, especially for someone who is set on joining a community in Kyoto or Tokyo. Going to one of the smaller communities like Anjo still wouldn't be easy, but it might be easier.

What is the name of this Asian snack?

Question:

Hi. This has been bugging me for ages. I had these crackers a few years ago. They were Asian crackers, and there were about two in a pack. They were all individually wrapped in a green wrapper. They were about a half an inch thick each, and were a brown color. They were like rice crackers, and a little crispy, but light and airy. I think I recall them tasting like teriyaki, or something savory like that. Please help me with the name!!

Answer:

You answered your own question. They were rice crackers indeed. The type of rice crackers you had was called senbei. Unfortunately, I can not tell you which type of senbei you had due to their big selections. If I must guess, I'll say you probably had one of those shoyu flavored senbei.

Here's one of the shoyu flavored senbei: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jrI8oWteohw/Tg…

PLEASE READ.

Exactly how did their urban cultures and ideas come to be?
Especially things like hentai and stuff.

Answer:

Japan was 'civilized' 500 years before Europe was.

maybe its not them that is strange, but gai jin.....

Best area to stay in Tokyo?

Question:

Help! I am trying to decide the best place to stay in Tokyo and have narrowed it down to Shinjuku or Roppongi. It will be my first time to Japan and my partner and I only have 4 days there. We are up for seeing a bit of the nightlife, but also want to see some touristy things during the day too. I like eating the local food when I am travelling so am not particularly looking for an area with Western food. Would love to hear your suggestions please! :)

Answer:

What is "best"??

For many best also is most expensive. You can stay almost anywhere in Tokyo and get around easily, and you can get a Tokyo subway day pass for about 1000 yen and go wherever you want.
For what to see, try looking at
http://wikitravel.org/en/Tokyo
http://www.jnto.go.jp
For food, their is unlimited choice, but you might want to look at
http://www.bento.com
But it might be better to just pick somewhere whenever you feel hungry and not waste time searching around for a particular place.
For hotels, you might want to look at:

http://www.superhoteljapan.com/en/
http://www.kid97.co.jp/~jeh-group/jeh-gr…

If you have never stayed in one, then I recommend a Japanese inn (ryokan) for at least a night for the experience. You might want to look at:

Question:

Answer:

i live in a city with a large vietnamese community and i know italian-americans, but no one actually from italy. in vietnamese culture (as well as some other asian cultures) it is actually considered good manners to slurp and smack while eating. it lets the cook or the host know that the food is good. europeans generally have the same type of manners we do, but i don't know about italians in particular when it comes to slurping. none of the italians i know do it.

What do Dutch people eat? DON'T ******* ANSWER WITH FOOD !!?

Question:

I am doing a 6 month work placement in Netherlands and staying with a host family and will be eating meals with them.

Answer:

We eat everything…
We have a lot more choice in EVERY kind of food than Americans or anywhere else. From Chinese and Japanese to Greek and German, we have French, Italian, American, Belgium, Dutch, Vietnamese, African, Mexican, Spanish, Indian, Ethiopian and many many different more! It really depends on the people though, some don’t like French (like me) others don’t like Greek. So, what you’ll eat depends on who you’re staying with.

Book day tour online at viator or when I arrive in Japan?

Question:

Should I book when I arrive in Japan, or should I do it online at viator? And is it trustworthy...

Answer:

I've never used that site myself, but I think they are just agents for travel companies in Japan. If you want to take a tour I would suggest looking at the Hato Bus website - www.hatobus.com/en/ or Japanican - www.japanican.com
Booking direct with these companies would save you any extra charge from the viator site.

does anyone know of good brands they have in japan i could research

It has to be readymade bento, the kind they sell in supermarkets- like sandwiches. i need some brand names to research to see if it's possible to introduce their bento product into the international market

http://www.hottomotto.com/
(Only in Japanese)

"Orjgin Bento" is also very famous. They sell bentos and deli.

Each JR stations, convinience stores, supermarkets, and departmenstores are selling their original bentos.

JR stations' bento (Ekiben) wil be good to research I think because they are selling various local menues.

Kyoto VS NIKK0??? IN JAPAN??

Question:

Answer:

Nikko is nice, but there's more to do in Kyoto. That said, if you plan on spending time in Tokyo there is no reason why you couldn't see both, since you could stay in Kyoto for a few days to see the sights there and then take a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo.

What areas of the country should i see in japan? kyoto, nikko?

Question:

i am on holiday in tokyo now, been here for 2 weeks with my partner, but he is leaving in 2 days as he couldnt get as much time off work as me, i dont fly back home until the 23rd of november. i would love to see some of the country, i was thinking perhaps kyoto or nikko for about 5 days, i will be alone i am 20 and first time overseas so i am a bit nervous about heading to the country alone, where should i go, i will stay at backpackers and hope i will meet some english speakers.

Answer:

If you have a JR Railpass, then traveling by yourself is no problem whatsoever, and it is also fun.
I have been to Japan 7 times sofar, and always travel by myself.
Also, I have found that most Japanese now can speak a lot of English(although it might be broken, or they don't have confidence in using it).

Kyoto and Nikko are both very different from each other, and both are must-sees.
Nikko has the famous Toshogu Shrine, which is a must-see(be sure to arrive there early in the afternoon since it closes at 4:30pm).

Kyoto has Heian Jingu, SanJuuSanGenDo, Gion etc.

A trip to Japan is also not complete without visiting Yokohama(China Town), Miyajima, Nara, Kamakura, Himeji, Nagoya and so on.

Nikko or kyoto in japan? to see the beautiful scenary. ?
