Is this japanese or chinese?

Question:

I am going to a japanese festival tomorrow and feel like dressing up.

I am a black robe that I think is a kimono but it says Made in China on it.

it kinda looks like this:

http://i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/284737806/Ladies_black_satin_silk_kimono_robe_with.jpg

So if its japanese why does it say made in china on it?

and those little umbrelllas....are they chinese or japanese or both?

http://www.japanbrandonline.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/s/p/special_bangasa_japanese_umbrella_black_small.jpg

Answer:

It's the same reason why Dell or Apple computers are made in China.

The "robe" is Japanese in style even though it was made in China. Many consumer products are being made in China for Japanese and other national companies to bring down cost because manual labor in China is much cheaper. Japan has mostly gone to high tech and automation except for the extremely expensive handmade products. You can still get kimonos made in Japan, but they are going to cost much more than those made in China.

As for the "umbrellas", they are more parasols than umbrellas and both the Japanese and Chinese were using them for so long no one really knows who actually invented it.

Can I watch ABC, CBS, and Fox shows on the network websites from Japan?

Question:

I like to watch programs on the network websites, so much more convenient than trying to record and watch.

Answer:

As Vinegar Taster said, there are 'services' that can help you with this. They're called VPN or Virtual Private Network. Helps prevent hacking and it's next to impossible for someone to find out your real IP address. You can make your computer seem to be almost anywhere in the world. In your case, you want it to appear to be in the U.S.

There are free services, such as HideMyAss. Some people say they work okay. I've heard that some of them sell your info and some of the software may have viruses. Don't know. There's one service called Strong VPN where you can buy a low level package that can make your computer appear to be in any of four different cities. It costs about $55/year. Then you can connect to sites that check to see what region you are in.

NetFlix is an economical source of TV programs and movies. Currently it costs $8/month. First month is a trial and is free. Lots of the movies are DVD only, and surprisingly enough it's not just the new movies that fall into this category. But at least in my opinion, what you do get is worth $8/month.

What Does This Japanese Sentence Mean In English?

Question:

ありがとうございます
Its starting...の部分は現在分詞(Present participle)を使ったつもりだったんですけど、あまり慣れない表現は使わな…
不自然な表現で、かえってネイティブの人には通じないんだろうなぁ。

Answer:

OK:

Thank you.

The part "It's starting" is where I tried to use the present participle [-ing form of a verb], but it's not something I'm used to using.....[sentence cuts off]

I wonder if this is unnatural, and a native speaker would not understand.....

Blasian being a dancer in Japan?

Question:

I'm mixed with black and japanese and i know you can be a backup dancer if you just go for it and audition. but does anyone one if a blasian can be a dance in japan or any Asian country? i've lived in Tokyo when i was little for a year and i remembered i loved the place. i don't want to try it and get my hopes up.

Answer:

There are so many biracial black/Japanese "Blapanese?" (I've heard "Blorean" before on an Outkast song) in the music industry...Good for them. As a father of half-Japanese kids I'm glad to see the Japanese can respect talent regardless of race.

Can you read Japanese? I have a link that lists all the major "half" celebrities in Japan. Some are in the music industry: Aoyama Teruko, Eliana (Brazilian, not sure of race), Crystal Kay (her dad was a black American soldier stationed in Korea), not to mention Jero (Jello?) a guy who is one fourth Japanese, (his grandma was Japanese), who became an enka singer, although dressing like 50 cent, and singing old-fashioned Japanese songs. A really interesting guy, and he was hugely popular in Japan for several years, and almost single-handedly made enka (which is painful to listen to) popular amongst younger people for a little while.

You can check here, this is only a few.
http://half-geinoujin.net/p.half-geinouj…

If you have talent and you don't mind being in Japanese showbiz (which I would guess is a lot more hard work, and less financially rewarding than the USA,) then you can make it. Hip hop and R and B influenced pop music, the kind that requires having dancers in the shows and on televised performances and music videos, is very popular. And Japanese are attracted to half Japanese, whether black/white/Filipino, etc. One of the girls in AKB, the most popular (among young girls and creepy guys) is half Filipino. Blacks, as you will see from the answers, are assumed to be very talented musicians, dancers, and athletes, and artists such as Rihanna, Beyonce, Alicia Keyes, not to mention President Obama are also "haafu" as the Japanese say. Just not half Japanese.

In japanese this means?

Question:

i tried translating it myself this is the step for me to get better in understand japanese better a person said minnasan goran kudasai i think she was suppose to say goran de kudasai correct me if im wrong in english i think she said "every please take a look "

Answer:

"every one please take a look" is almost correct, but your Japanese is a little unnatural.

We say in Japanese 「皆さん、ご覧ください」 Minasan, goran kudasai.
皆=every, all
pronounced mina or minna.
But we never say minnasan, minasan is correct.
We also say goran kudasai, never goran de kudasai nor goran wo kudasai.

By the way your English will be better, if you type upper case at the first of a sentence and "i".

Stay study hard,
regards.

Tips for moving to Japan?

Question:

I've been fooling around with the idea of moving to Japan and having a career there after I graduate from college. Aside from learning the language and familiarizing myself with the culture and customs, what would I need to know, lean, be aware of if I were to move to Japan?

Answer:

If anything you need to know yourself. If you have a "I don't know what I want, so I will go to Japan" attitude, it's unlikely you will find it in Japan. Likewise for "I hate my life situation, so maybe I'll go to Japan" or something else like it.
Try to know Japan better - and that doesn't mean anime, manga, or some other superficial thing, study its history and read some cultural books. Have an idea of why exactly you want to see Japan, and what you want to experience. Also be aware that you will lose a lot of the conveniences you are probably taking for granted right now where you are. Moving and getting set up in a foreign country is no picnic. And know also that being far away for an extended time probably means you will lose some friends where you are.
Of course living in Japan can be a very enriching experience as well.

Samurai Village in japan?

Question:

For you tourists, what is the best and most beautiful and best samurai village in japan?

Answer:

I recommend Toei Uzumasa Eigamura also called Kyoto Studio Park. it is located a short distance from Kyoto. It features a collection of replicas of traditional Japanese building which are used as settings for historical movies and TV dramas. It is an amazing place with whole streets depicting Edo Period town scenes, a replica of the old Nihonbashi Bridge, a traditional court house and a Meiji Period police box.

Could 2 halfies have a baby with blonde hair and/or blue eyes?

Question:

halfies~ half japanese half white

Obviously the 2 people would have dark hair and dark eyes. but if both of their white parents were blone haired blue eyed could the baby the halfies had possibly come out blone and blue eyed or is the japanese characterisits too strong

Answer:

Your statements are a little confusing.

If you mean that both mother and father of the child had direct relatives who had blonde hair and blue eyes, then there is a slight chance the child may have blonde hair and/or blue eyes. But in the majority of the case, the child will have dark hair and brown eyes.

The gene that determines blonde hair and blue eye color are call recessive. And the ones for dark hair and brown eyes are call dominant. A child inherits one pair of genes from each parent. If the child gets 2 recessive, then that trait will appear. If the child gets ANY dominant trait in the pair, then the dominant trait appears - that's why it is call "dominant".

The chance is there. but very small.

How do the Japanese feel about WW2?

Question:

From the young of today to the old who fought in the war. Do they feel the war was right or wrong?

How do they feel about the merciless crimes that were commited by most of the Japanese military at the time? (I am pointing out some of the horrible crimes like the Bataan Death march but I am in no way saying all Japanese people commited war crimes.)

How do most feel about the atomic bombs?

Is there a lot of hate towards the US and its Allies?

Answer:

>Do they feel the war was right or wrong?

It depends on each person.

>How do they feel about the merciless crimes that were commited by most of the Japanese military at the time?

I don't think history textbooks in Japan are teaching these things. So most Japanese in young generation don't know much.

>How do most feel about the atomic bombs?

Most think that it was wrong to drop it on Hiroshima, of course. But they do not hate US for that. It is what happened in the past.

>Is there a lot of hate towards the US and its Allies?

Not much. "Allies" means many nations. It's changed over time. During Cold War period, many Japanese were wary of USSR. But now even Russia is a capitalist nation.

US has been the biggest ally of Japan after WW2.

How would you say Anime Club i…

Question:

At school I'm in Anime Club, but we focus more on anime, manga, and video games than Japanese culture (something I want to work on). I'm trying to learn Japanese (so I can move to Japan in seven years, wish me luck!) and I was wondering how you would say Anime Club.
I know that anime is written in katakana like this:
アニメ
but I was wondering about club. Google translate says kurabu:
クラブ
but I don't trust it completely.
So, say I made a banner for our club that said in big letters:
アニメクラブ
Would any random Japanese person that walked in be able to read it and understand what it was, without thinking that what they just read was awkward or something?
どうもブロホ!
~山口美ちゃn≒^~^≒

Answer:

There is nothing wrong with saying アニメ・クラブ
However, in Japanese high schools, they will actually use either サークル (saakuru=circle), like in 漫画サークル (manga saakuru), or +部 (bu) as in 書道部 (shodoubu=calligraphy club). Its not likeクラブis not used, it is just used more often for dance clubs and less often for school clubs.

Second, Jazz (who wrote above) is absolutely wrong. You should start learning Hiragana first (though it seems like you might have already done that). You can't write or read Japanese words without hiragana. Katakana is only used for foreign words/loan words. Also, you should get a textbook, preferably with a CD. The internet is too broad to actually learn a language from. But at any rate, you didn't come here for Japanese learning advice.

Any of the above would be fine, but if I were you, I would actually stick with アニメ・クラブbecause your audience is American. Just wanted to let you know that there are options.

P.S. I don't know who 山口美ちゃn is but if that is supposed to be you, you never put ちゃんon your own name. Also, hit the "n" key twice and it will produce an ん.

Is Takeshima a territory in South Korea?

Question:

Answer:

Depends on who you ask. But the South Korean government is currently in control of the islands. Two are occupied. South Korea has a coast guard station there. There's a few people there who make their living on fishing. I think there's two light houses there as well that need keepers.
In English a rough translation would be Solitary Island by the Koreans, & Bamboo Island by the Japanese.
I've seen photos of the place, and I wouldn't want to live there.

"Easy" texts with separated words and furigana?

Question:

Hey, so... I'm looking for Japanese texts that are simple enough for beginners to understand, with furigana and separated words.
Children stories, easy-to-read novels, etc.
Would be great!
I found one called Night on The Milky Way Train, it has furigana and a translation but the words aren't serparated. I've tried writing it in romaji on Notepad to try to work out the words but it didn't go too well.
My vocabulary isn't that good so it's hard for me to recognize words.

Answer:

If you actually want to read a story (as opposed to a conversation, which many text books have) I would recommend this set. I know it is a little pricey but it comes with a cd of each story so you can listen to the narration while reading. I don't think it has spaces between the words in the text but it might help you differentiate between words by the tone and pauses the speaker uses.

Honestly though, you are not going to find a native text with spaces between the words because it is just not done. Japanese kids already can speak Japanese so they don't have the issue of trying to figure out where one word ends and another begins.

I want to move to tokyo to get into the street racing scene any help would be appreciated?

Question:

Answer:

Sorry, but the chances of that are less than zero. That scene is more or less a closed society. There's no 18 year old kids zooming around in $250,000 sports cars. You can't even go over the speed limit in much of Tokyo because the roads are narrow. There's also all kinds of traffic cameras.
Most of your " drifters" go up in the hills at night. They aren't going to trust a stranger who doesn't even have a car.
If you want to move to Japan, you need a college degree & a job offer before you get there.
EDIT: Mark, you can't buy your way into Japan, or the racing scene. Can you speak native level Japanese ? It's not possible.

How can I become more intimate with Japanese women?

Question:

Sorry I couldn't find a good way to phrase my question so I'll try to explain my problem!

I live in Japan and I recently moved from Tokyo to a small town in Yamanashi. Everyone here is really friendly but meeting women has been a lot more difficult than in Tokyo. I have very few chances to meet women that are around my age and have similar hobbies or interests. I'm 29 years old. And when I finally do meet someone, trying to see them again becomes extraordinarily difficult!

Most girls I meet seem to want to take things slow and really get to know a guy before they start dating him. That's OK with me, but the same girls haven't been giving me a chance to do so! I may meet a girl at a party or place I often go, invite her somewhere, and immediately get rejected. Or I may ask her for her phone number or email and also get rejected. Sometimes I do manage to get a girl's contact info, but they reply whenever they want, break promises or dates and seem to be really carefree. Or in my opinion, uncaring!

My Japanese guy friends tell me that I have to take things slow with women and slowly gain their trust. Only then, will they finally take notice of me and be open to serious relationship with me.

So this is my question!

If Japanese girls refuse to share contact info with a guy they just met or set up some kind of a date to see him again, how is she going to get to know him better?

Answer:

>Aside from something like an introduction, it seems very hard to meet and get close to Japanese women.

That's Japanese women. If you don't like it, better to find another non-Japanese woman.

Addition:
>If that's true, then I feel sorry for Japanese men. How do people meet, get married and have children in Japan? It can't all be through introductions.

Actually, 30-50 years ago or before, many Japanese people used to get married in arranged marriage, that is introduction from parents.

But now, this custom is gone. So the reality is, marriage and birth rate is declining rapidly. They expect that 30% of Japanese men and women around your age (29) will never get married in their life.

So you asked "how". But the reality is people just do NOT get married and have children in Japan.

>I've also heard that the population in Japan keeps shrinking every year and has been for many years. Could this be the cause?

I think this is one of main reasons. But it's not the only reason.

>If so, then why not change things?

Well, this is how Japanese men and women behave. And you can't change people's mentality.

So the bottom line is, I recommend to find OTHER women.

Addition2:
>I know you can't change how people think and feel. But you make the future of Japan sound hopeless. Are you OK with all this? Doesn't it bother you?

hmmm, I don't think I said something which sounds like so hopeless. I think I just said that "30% of Japanese men and women around your age will never get married" or something. Does this or something related to this sound hopeless?

In fact, there are many worse factors in Japan now like radiation or huge amount of debt. So I didn't except that you would take my words on marriage in Japan as hopeless.

But anyway, there is nothing I can do if Japanese people closed their mind, and do not get married or have children. I'm just an individual.

>And it's not impossible for me to meet women. I meet women all the time! It's just hard meeting a woman that I can really connect with and get along with. I think you call it 両思い (ryouomoi) in Japanese.

Yes, 両思い is correct. I don't know what you tried to tell me with these last 3 rows. But anyway, it does not have to be a Japanese woman, for me, for you, for anyone.

What does this mean? Japanese?

How many stamps do i need to send a normal size envelope from Australia to japan?

Question:

how many stamps do i need to send a letter from Australia (QLD Goldcoast) to japan

just one like this one!!!!! .........

http://www.clipart-fr.com/en/data/icons/…

Answer:

This is not something someone in Japan will know. Maybe you will get lucky and some Australian will know. But my suggestion would be to go to the Australian postal service website. If it is like most countries, it will depend on the weight of the letter.

And your picture was basically useless. You can't tell weight from a picture of a drawing of an envelope.

I have returned from 4 days at the end of July in Chiba Japan am I ok?

Question:

I had to visit Chiba and stay there for work for 4 days at the end of July. I am now concerned about radiation exposure and that it may effect me. I was hoping as I was only there a short time I should be ok?

Answer:

Really, you ask NOW that you have already gone? You do know that radiation poisoning isn't something that can simply be 'fixed', right? Is now really the best time to ask? Are you okay? I think that would depend on how we are defining 'ok'.

If you want a LOT of opinions on this matter, about 95%+ saying the same thing, just search for 'radiation in Japan' in the Search Yahoo! Answers database space. I agree with the 95%+ bunch.

Do japanese schools allow piercings?

Question:

I have a nose piercing and just recently got snake bites, I'm thinking of studying abroad in japan . I don't want to stand out more than i would usually, what with me being a foreign and what not already D: I also don't want to offend or be known as a "bad" kid!! I really am a serious student and I wouldn't want to mess up an opportunity like that with something as meaningless as a rebellious act. I need some advise!!! DX

Answer:

I've seen a lot of younger kids with piercings, but from what I have heard, they are putting them in after they leave school. In college it is a different matter as I have seen them in class with piercings. Though not snake bites. But regardless of whether or not it is okay, those snake bites WILL make you stand out more than usual, being foreign and whatever what not entails.

As far as advice, or advising you, I would advise you to learn to spell 'advice'.

NOTE: My daughter's private high school won't even allow the holes for the piercings. Those little plastic, flesh colored ear rings meant to hide the fact that your ears are pierced may work for a while, but once they catch you they start doing periodic checks for the holes.
