Depends on who you ask. But the South Korean government is currently in control of the islands. Two are occupied. South Korea has a coast guard station there. There's a few people there who make their living on fishing. I think there's two light houses there as well that need keepers.
In English a rough translation would be Solitary Island by the Koreans, & Bamboo Island by the Japanese.
I've seen photos of the place, and I wouldn't want to live there.
