I have to talk about Japan to some elementary students. What should I talk about?

Question:

Since I have studied abroad in Japan twice and also a Japanese major in college, I was invited to talk about Japan to about 20-30 elementary students. I have some stuff I will be showing them that I bought or acquired when I was studying in Japan, but what else should I talk about to them?

I was planning to teach them how to count from 1-10, maybe easy phrases like: Thank you, sorry, etc.

What else would be good? I think after I talk about stuff, it will just be open-ended where they could ask me questions about Japan.

I think I have to talk with them for about an hour or so.

Any tips would be great! Thanks.

Answer:

You will obviously want to change it based on their grade level, but I once did the same thing for some 2nd graders.

Things they may be interested in:
Anime/manga (especially ones that they watch on TV)
video games
Clothing (uniforms, regular clothes, special clothing)
Food (I mean - EVERYONE loves food)
Transportation - how do kids get to school, how do people travel, etc.,
Simple geography - show how Japan compares to your home country in size, where it is on a map, etc.,

You may want to teach them some origami - its easy and something they can show their parents. Maybe teach them how to use chopsticks and play a game where they have to try and move beans with them.

Play some Japanese games with them - for example daruma ga koronda, fruit basket, or karuta.
Play some Japanese music - traditional and modern.
Have them practice writing some characters (hiragana or easy kanji).

I wouldn't rely on the questions to take a lot of time. Sometimes my junior high students don't ask much of anything. I remember having guest speakers come in high school and even university and the Q&A sessions were often very quiet.

You may want to show some video clips, especially good if you can find some from the travel channel or anything educational. That is more likely to be accurate than something from an anime/drama.

Just try and think of things that will apply best to the age group. Obviously the younger kids will have less of an attention span.

If they are older you may want to talk a little about the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.

How were the peasant classes treated in japan?

Question:

Answer:

I'm not sure if there is any peasant "class" in Japan. But there are peasants anyway.

Young people do not want to become peasants now. So they are basically aging. And women do not want to marry a peasant. Many of them are struggling to find a wife. Some are marrying a Chinese woman or others.

That's how they are treated.

Had Japan not accepted mail for a while after the earthquake, and are they accepting mail now?

Question:

I have a friend who lives in Kawasaki City. Her mother lived in Fukushima. If you know anything about how these areas are doing, would you please share your information?

Answer:

There is no problem in Kawasaki. Fukushima has Fukushima Plant. So some of residents have been ordered to evacuate. Some areas are still exclusion zone where people are not allowed to enter.

So it depends on where in Fukushima her mother lived.

What is the correct business etiquette when meeting a Japanese?

Question:

A while ago my manager (an Australian) and I had a meeting with a senior manager from fairly large Japanese company in Australia, the Japanese manager also bought his Australian colleague. When I came to shank hands with the Japanese manager, I smiled and went to shake his hands like usual, he also smiled and shook my hands but then he bowed down in front of me, this was the first time I met a Japanese manager who bowed down, I wasn’t sure what to do so I immediately bowed down too (he didn’t bow down with my Australian manager, maybe it was because I am Asian and he assumed I should bow?)

I wasn’t sure how low was I suppose to bow or whether I was suppose to let go of his hand when I bow, I basically did a small bow while still shaking his hand. I felt quite unnatural, and he obviously sensed the awkwardness, I think he was immediately offended that I only did a small bow or that I did not bow down at same time as he did or I did not know the correct business etiquette. Anyhow, after that initial “handshake”, he obviously became cold towards me throughout the rest of the meeting.

What is the correct etiquette in this situation?

Thank you.

Answer:

I think your problem does not relate to etiquette.
Generally, negative/offensive things are not allowed in Japanese society. So, these things are always expressed in indirect way. It means skilled people can detect many things through your reactions. Ignorant people might feel as if it were telepathy. Many travelers experience it at ryokans in Japan. They use this sense to make you comfortable.

Do you remember what you did here? Through your actions, everybody knows your inferiority complex to Japan. I think it will be shown evidently in your face. Skilled Japanese businessmen will detect your offensive mind immediately.

Is it possible for me to get a job / apprenticeship in Japan?

Question:

I was just wondering if I get a Bachelor in Graphic design with some experiences, am I able to live in Japan for a short period (say 6 months to a year) and get a job or maybe apprenticeship in Graphic design? The ONLY reason I want to work there because I like their designs and I hope to learn something from them and bring what I learn to Australia.

I know basic Japanese, English, Chinese and Spanish. I am an Australian citizen and living in Australia :) Have some Japanese friends and dad has some Japanese business parnters.

Answer:

I think knowing basic Japanese is not enough, basic is just for travel. You should have at least intermadiate level Japanese if you want to work there. I suggest you take a year off, study Japanese at university, while you're studying ask your lecturer and see if they know anything about this or any intership program may be available. Be able to speak the language is a must, even your dad can find you a job in Japan, you will find it difficult to communicate with other colleagues anyway.

Whats new with Japan?

Question:

It seems (at least for me) that the News has stopped broadcasting Japan's progress of recovering from the tsunami. Yeah, it did happen two months ago, but still, I'm curious. What has been going on? Did they ever fix the radiation leakage? And how are the houses/buildings doing? I know the tower of Tokyo was bent from the tsunami/earthquake. Have they caught back up with the **** load of donations they received? I know some things were contaminated there as well, I think milk, right? My prayers go out to Japan and hope they are doing good.

Answer:

People are still in shelters and there's a long way to go. The government is working on building temporary houses for those in shelters. As far as the Nuclear Plants go, they are trying to make progress, but as they keep going, they find some new problem somewhere. TEPCO is trying to follow its 6-9 month plan with the Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 1 as strictly as possible. Although, there are a lot of obstacles in their way. They are trying to reach a "cold shutdown." They should be able to achieve this by the end of this year or maybe the beginning of next year. Also, "International experts have said that a workforce in the hundreds or even thousands would take years or decades to clean up the area. John Price, a former member of the Safety Policy Unit at the UK's National Nuclear Corporation, has said that it 'might be 100 years before melting fuel rods can be safely removed from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant.'" This is most likely the case, because the isotopes in the rods have very long half lives so, they stay active for a long period of time. The country has been taking serious precautions to prevent situations like this occurring again. Recently, on May 6, Naoto Kan apparently ordered a shut down of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant because, they have predicted that within the next 30 years there will be an earthquake there 8.0 or maybe even higher. I think the country will be able to get out of this situation as soon as possible. Japan owns 75% of the Westinghouse Nuclear division, about 37% of General Electric, and they own Hitachi and Toshiba. I know that we have more nuclear power plants in the U.S. compared to France and Japan but, Japan has more expertise when it comes to Nuclear Power. The most recent issue in our country is that about 70 new built nuclear plants in the U.S. were designed by Westinghouse, the same structure was used in the Fukushima Daiichi Plant 1 so, they might endure similar damage if we ever got hit by a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. However the chances for that are slim. France has a higher chance of facing this issue because, France uses 86% of Nuclear Power for electricity and they have reactors by the sea like Japan, and they are all structured by Westinghouse.

How much would moving to japan cost ?

Question:

i have decided to move to Tokyo and i am going to buy an apartment. I live in Spokane Washington an i was wondering how much it would cost in USD for gas to Seattle and the plane ticket to Tokyo and how much it would cost in yen for one of the small 8 by 10 apartments.Thank you :D

Answer:

You won't be moving here without a college degree and a job offer. That being said, let's assume you are bringing only your clothes or whatever else you can manage with an extra piece of luggage on the airline.

Airfare - $1500
Apartment - 90,000 yen/month plus twice that for security deposit and key money
Furnishings - Can't begin to guess, but you would need a stove, frig, microwave, futon, table, chairs and all kinds of other minor stuff. Figure at least 200,000 - 300,000 yen.

You'll need at least a month's living expenses to get by on before you get paid. Say a minimum of 150,000 yen.

There's other misc stuff but it's close enough for a 13 year-old with what is only a pipedream.

A conflict in Japan's history which had an impact on their political development.

Here's the keys;

Bunmei-kaika (Rapid Modernization=Westernization) - Meiji period -

---- Edit:
WWII and Japan's 'rebirth' - Shouwa period
GHQ's control after the war (GHQ = Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers)
Although being completely devastated after WWII, it was a good opportunity for Japan to rebuild the country, introducing some ideas/actions led by GHQ. Massive production, for example, is one of the big effect. GHQ's actions led MacArthur to be viewed as the new Imperial force in Japan by many Japanese political and civilian figures, even being considered to be the rebirth of the Shogun style government which Japan was ruled under until the start of the Meiji Restoration Period.

*GHQ's control was also targeted on 'brainwash' the Japanese (see 2 Media censorship)

Japan before the Edo period.?

Question:

Need to know if the values and belifes changed during the Edo period in Japan. (1603-1800) Also need to know How the political statue changed. Any other info? Thanks.,

Answer:

The values and beliefs did not change, but the Edo period was the first long period of peace and stability in Japan after over 200 years of near constant civil war. What did changed, was the new Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled from the city of Edo (present day Tokyo) enforced laws that to most outsiders today would be viewed as very strict and codified society so that everyone was "locked" into the social class they were born into. For example, a farmer's son cannot be anything other than a farmer. A samurai, only a samurai. An artisan, only an artisan. The laws were so detail and governed almost every aspect of a person life. For example, even what a person ate is dictated by their social class. A farmer could not eat certain foods, and had to dress a certain way. He and his family were forbidden to wear certain types of clothing, especially if it was made of expensive material even if they could afford it.

Edo period represents a chnage in Japan in that Japan became a more rigid class oriented society. Before the Edo period, even a lowly peasant could rise to the most powerful position as a ruler of Japan - see Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Question:

So, I want to say "My favorite celebrity appears in this show" but I do not know how to say all that. I'm not sure if saying "私のお気に入り著名人が出現します!" is correct... It seem not to be, please help me, thank you!

Answer:

I would translate;
私の好きなセレブ(タレント)がこの番組に出演しているんです。(or ~に出ているんです)

出現 is rarely used for people unless it's about Buddha, God, Maria, the Prophets etc., I suppose.
Or (bigger) animals, monsters; 熊(bear) / 謎の物体(unidentified object)が出現!

Although お気に入り is used as an internet community wording like ”お気に入り登録” (My Contacts), but it should not be used for yourself. (because お is honorific)
My favorite celebrity →(私が)気に入っているセレブ・気になっているセレブ is better

Is kyoto tourist-y, would you say?

Question:

a few sources tell me it's crammed with tourism but does that ruin the effect of Ancient Japan, would you say?

Answer:

I would say the fact that Kyoto is a modern city ruins the effect of ancient Japan.

Look, the major Japanese cities are ALL crammed with tourists, and they're all modern. If you're looking for a city where people still live like it's the Heian era on a daily basis, you're not going to find that because it doesn't exist anymore. If you're looking for towns or parts of towns that have been preserved in their historical state, that DOES exist. But Kyoto is a modern city with modern people going about their modern lives. This includes tourists, just like everywhere else in Japan. If you don't like tourists, then go during the off season. There were almost none there in December when I went.

Japanese drama recmmendations please?

Question:

Hii
I am looking for some good japanese dramas to watch. It would be great if you can recommend me some more.

Some important notes:

- i prefer the guy to be really cold, forceful and mean to the girl.

How long does it take to travel from Matsumoto to Tokyo?

Question:

By both car AND bullet train.
I'm estimating two hours by car, 30 minutes by train?

Thank you.

Answer:

If you're really eager to take the bullet train for the experience, then you can take a limited express train from Matsumoto to Nagano, and then take the Asama shinkansen to Tokyo. And yes, riding time total is about 2.5 hours, and costs about 5000 yen. Otherwise, you can take a limited express Super Azusa train from Matsumoto to Shinjuku for about 3900 yen and the same time, about 2.5 hours.
Driving varies widely depending on the time - rush hour in Tokyo is like a moving parking lot. If you want
to be sure, take the train which is more reliable and punctual.

Nobody else agrees, but I can only say that a lot of the foreigners I meet in Tokyo speak very little Japanese, but they are all working in really good jobs. Advertising, PR, even some of the foreign correspondents for major western newspapers can't really speak very well and take somebody to translate at interviews. Western companies move their top staff around the world and they cannot be expected to learn the language everywhere they go so all you need to do is find a company that will send you out here to work.

With what unit do you measure in Japan?

Question:

For height I know it's centimeters. And for distances I believe it's kilometers. For weight I believe it's kilograms. But what about shoe size?

Answer:

Most everything is in metric. Pretty much America is the only country on earth still using the old system for everything. But due to their influence, you can see TV screen measurements in inches, plus in Japan rooms are built by how many tatami mats fit into it. Shoe sizes in Japan are done in centimeters, but Japanese also love expensive imports from Europe and then the Europeans sizes are used.

Does Japan use regular lockers?

Question:

I know that most Japanese schools use shoe lockers, and I know the reason for that, but do they use regular lockers like in the U.S. for your books and backpack? And if they don't, where do they put their books and backpacks? I've seen in anime they they use a hook on the side of their desks sometimes. Is that what you use?

Answer:

At my schools they have small cubbyholes in the back of the classrooms so the students can keep their extra books and supplies there. In junior high the students at my school put their school bags on top of the shelf with the cubbyholes. In elementary school the cubbyholes hold their backpacks.

The desks at my schools don't open from the top, but rather are hollow inside. The students put their books, notebooks, etc., inside. They don't change classrooms for every class, and only move for classes with special rooms (shop, home EC, art, PE, music).

The hooks on the side of the desks can hold a bag, but at my schools the students put their lunch sets, the bag with their gym shoes, and sometimes the bag with their stuff for clubs. Most of my teachers get mad if the students put their school bags on these hooks or just put their bags on the floor beside their desks.
