How can i go to school in Japan?

Question:

So I want to go to high school in Japan, but I don't want to go as a foreign exchange student. Is there any other way?

Answer:

People need to take a chill pill in regards to this current incident.
First off, if you are in places like Kyoto and Osaka, you are unaffected by any of the current events.

Second, odds are the power plant will not explode into smithereens at this point and time.

Now finally to answer the person's question.
Aside from foreign exchange, the only other way is to get your family to move to Japan and take up residency in Japan. There you can enroll as a resident. If you have another family member in Japan you will need to transfer custodian rights to them. As both scenarios are highly unlikely NO there is no other way until you graduate high school.

How does Japan really feel about gays, cross dressers, and different age relationships?

Question:

I've been reading and watching a lot of anime lately and the majority of the guy characters seem to hint at homosexual tendencies very often, there are a lot of gays in anime, a lot of guys cross dress or are overly feminine, and I've encountered a lot of not age appropriate relationships. Like teens and adults being in love or preteens and adults. So is Japan really ok with all this stuff?
Personally I think it would be cool since I want to live there some day!

Answer:

Anime often portrays exaggeration so it does not mean it's real. Japan is open to the LGBT/gay community. There are gay prides happening every year in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. There are also gay bars and many gay entertainers. In TV, there are gay/crossdressing/transvestite entertainers. But gay marriage is still not honored here. I know some European gay people working as entertainers in some gay bars in Shinjuku.
May-December or different age relationship is often judged by many people. There are still many people close minded by it especially if it's a huge gap like 20 years above. Take for example Erika Sawajiri (24 yrs old) and her ex husband which is 46 years old. Many people criticized them.

So in conclusion, Japan is not a land of anything alright and happy endings. Many people still have strict moral codes.

What to get for my Japanese friend?

Question:

My coworker is transferring back to Japan. My coworkers and I have pooled a little money to buy a gift for him and his family. He is married and has three children under 10.
We were originally thinking backpacks or stuffed animals for the children, but are still unsure what to buy them and definitely unsure what to get him and his wife .... any ideas ? We don't want to get them something they can easily buy in Japan. Possibly something memorable about America?
Any answers are welcome !
Thanks in advance !

Answer:

Go with the food/drink idea. It's the right answer. If it's something local to you, and is perceived as
a luxury item, it will go over big. They are going to have to travel with whatever it is, another factor.

Good luck!

Unbelievable footage from Japan port?

Question:

http://viralvideochart.unrulymedia.com/y…

Aerial photos don't seem to do the reality of the damage much justice.
The most shocking photo I've seen of the disaster so far was that of collective burial, which is doubly unusual in Japan...

Why do the Japanese loved the yakuzas so much?

Question:

Nearly everyone I've met in Japan said they aren't harmful & not petty thieves, instead they're working on a much larger crime scale, helping the community once in a while & considered honorable among the communities. But:

1. They'll murder people who get in their way
2. Debt collectors who'd corner people to the point of suicide
3. Blackmailing people to the point of destroying their whole career, family & life
4. Drug dealers who'd ruin the younger generations for their lifetime
5. Pimps who'd encourage your daughters into prostitution
6. Human trafficker a.k.a slave traders
7. Muscled out small businesses with unhealthy business practices
8. Setting people up into gambling, desperation & debts
9. Corrupting the government
10. Destroying the Japanese economy in the long run
11. And overall making a much larger mess in a day than what small petty thieves may have done in their lifetime

I knew they helped communities once in a while, but the impact of their actions had caused immense destructions than mere donations. And yes, their existence helped keeping petty thieves rate low, but won't you rather have the small petty thieves as in general they are way much harmless in the longer/shorter run economy/society wise, compared to the crime lord yakuzas?

Thereby I'm unable to understand, why did the Japanese still adored and worshiped the yakuzas so much, and calling these sociopaths honorable, cool & brave?

Answer:

Don't know where you got your twisted facts from, but nobody love the Yakuzas here. Used to be people join Yakuzas because they can't get jobs. These days its not practical to join because its no longer as lucrative as it used to be. In fact, the Yakuzas are having a hard time recruiting young candidates thanks to the economic progress Japan has made. These days they're so desperate that they're turning to foreigners in Japan. Foreigners/overstayers who can't get jobs & are desperate for scraps.

Not only that, nobody fear them anymore, according to my friend who runs a used car dealership. He said if they were to ask for protection money or try anything funny with him, he'd just call the police on them. Once he even refused to sell a car to an unruly Yakuza customer. Not that he discriminate against them, if they are polite and resonable, he'll still do business with them.

Will all areas of Japan be affected by radiation?

Question:

Answer:

It is unknown how far the radiation is going, and some people believe that it will hit alot of the area, except only small amounts of radiation will be seen in some areas.
However people over in Japan now are working around the clock to stop this disaster, and sadly no one really knows yet what lies ahead. However its been such a long time really since it all started, and it certainly doesn't look very good.

The individual characters
A description of the exact meaning (ie a sentence/example)
What, if anything they mean next to each other?

Will wearing long and loose socks make me look like a follower?

Question:

http://s2.hubimg.com/u/3564665_f520.jpg

You know, the very old but known sock trend in Japan that's still somewhat around today?
Yeah... I just want to wear the socks in that particular style, but I don't wanna get called a Japanese wannabe for it, or "otaku". There are kind of a lot of Asians in my area, so yeah...

Do you think I should still wear it?

Answer:

It's your fashion. You do not have to ask what others think. Wear what you like to wear.

How could our lives be affected by what's going on in japan?

Question:

Justify the effects on us. What are three reasons you think we in the united states will be affected or chose three reason the united states will not be affected.

Answer:

Prolonged low level exposure to radiation such as Japan has unleashed on the world cause random mutations. Look for a lot of human birth defects and a lot of still-born beasts with abnormalities.

Host families in Japan?

Question:

How should you act with them?
Should you make dinner for them?
Do you eat with them?
Do they mind having conversations with you?
Sorry, I don't know anything about them and would like to learn before I meet and stay with mine

Answer:

Act politely and always take off your shoes at the door! There is usually an area you leave all your shoes. Just follow your family. Obviously act as you would if you were visiting someone elses home, so always say please and thankyou, keep the bathroom and kitchen clean if you use it, and make the bed/futon every morning

As for making dinner, your host mum will usually do everything like that for you, considering she has to cook for the rest of the family herself. I am not saying however that you shouldn't try to help her, because I helped my host mum in the kitchen, and she was always very happy. I have stayed with 2 different families before and always got Japanese food, so westernized meals you are most likely to have at home won't be made. however you wil be suprised at some of the things they eat. if you haven't been there before in other words, don't just think it is all sushi, rice and tofu.
As for conversations, of course they want to talk to you. as they have decided to have you its because they usually want to learn about your own country, or have experienced other great students like you beforehand. its a good idea to therefore bring gifts such as a calendarr, pens and pencils, photos and toys of your country for them to see.
Also how good are you at japanese? remember to always speak in the 'plain form' way, as they are family :).
for example: I eat sushi : sushi o taberu
don't say: sushi o tabemasu.
only if you were talking to a teacher/store owner, etc. (people you do not know)

Are Japanese teens/young adults friendly to foreigners?

Question:

I want to do study abroad/exchange in university when I am 20 years old, to a Japanese city, and I was wondering if I would be able to make friends easily there ?
I would have studied the language beforehand and continue studying up there

Can I make friends with Japanese girls and boys , and maybe a boyfriend?
I am worried that I'll just end up hanging out with other foreign ppl at the university

Answer:

Yes they are friendly, however if you do not speak Japanese prepare to make friends mainly with the Japanese students who are learning English and/or preparing to study abroad in an English speaking country soon.

There will be those who do not wish to befriend a foreigner, those who want to be your friend because they think foreigners are "cool", and those who don't care what you are as long as you are a good/fun person.

Edit: Not sure why the thumbs downs, this is exactly what happened to me while I was there and pretty much every other exchange student that was at the school with me.

When will it be safe to visit Japan again?

Question:

Does anyone have any clue how long will it take?
The Places we intend to visit are:
-Tokyo
-Osaka
-Yokohama
-Nara
-Kyoto
Are they safe and if not how long till they become safe.

Answer:

People really need to stop the Hysteria.

ALL the places you mentioned on your list is SAFE to visit RIGHT NOW. Everything west of Tokyo is 100% fine and was not affected. Tokyo itself is FINE, WE ARE ALIVE IN TOKYO, the CITY WAS NOT DESTROYED.

If you are worried about radiation levels, the radiation levels in Tokyo are no more then normal background radiation anywhere else. You get more radiation from a doctor's visit and getting x-rays then you do from standing on the streets of Tokyo.

The only areas not safe to visit right now are the areas immediately hit in northern/northeastern Japan. None of those cities are on your list.

If you marry in Japan while on a temporary Visa can you extend your stay and/or apply for permanent residency?

Question:

What if you are in Japan on a temporary Visa (Like Tourist or Student Visa) and suddenly get married to a Japanaese woman? Hey, it can happen (If you're REALLY hot?). Can you then petition for an extension to your stay? Or can you apply for permanent residency? Or can you perhaps apply for a work permit in Japan? What are the benefits of getting married in Japan, if any, to those who are staying there temporarily? For the record, I don't plan on doing this! But one of my co-workers shared with me this story about how he came to the states (USA) after crossing the border, got married, and got all his stuff fixed. I believe he said that sometime after he got married he got his green card thanks to his spouse. Then eventually his Citizenship. So yeah, it makes me wonder if things like that happen in Japan. Because I know that there are a lot of Chinese/Korean/Brazillian/Other immigrants with either temporary visas or expired visas. I mean, I'm sure some can suddenly get married and have kids or something. So, what happens to them? Do their families just suddenly get torn apart when one of the parents has to leave? Or does the parent get to stay with them now and provide for the family?

Answer:

OK you have a lack of knowledge here's the deal.

If you come on a temporary visitor's permit and get married. You change and apply for a spouse visa.
Spouse visa is subject to inspection, for example they will check if it is not a "fake" marriage. So meeting someone and getting married really fast will be very very suspicious to Immigration inspectors.

Permanent Residency comes 3-5 years later and you have to apply for that, 3-5 years after living in Japan.

If you won a free 1 week tour to Japan, would you go?

Question:

Despite the nuclear "news".

Answer:

Of course, I'd go.

The nuclear news is ratings grabbing from fear mongering. Unless you decide to take a tour of the plants (and I don't think there are any right now :-) You're perfectly safe. The areas hit by the tsunami are in far worse shape then the Fukushima plant.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

What percentage of electrical power in Japan has been disrupted?

Question:

by Daiichi/Fushishima situation. 5 reactors is significant.

What percentage of Japan's electrical needs were supplied by this facility??

Answer:

Note that Western Japan and Eastern Japan run on different power grids. Western Japan is completely unaffected.

Western Japan runs on 100v 60hz but Eastern Japan runs on 100v 50hz. This is due to a long complicated history dating back to the 1880s and Japan never unified it's power grid.

Because of that and due to the low number of power conversion stations, power from Western Japan cannot be sent to Eastern Japan in great numbers to be of any real assistance.

How long will it take for Japan to recover?

Question:

Answer:

Not all of Japan was affected by the earthquake and tsunami. I think you mean how long will it take for the disaster-stricken areas to recover. For the towns destroyed by the tsunamis, it will take at least four or five years to clean up and rebuild. But some of them may never recover.

Where should I go in south - southwest of Japan?

Question:

I'm off to Japan in a few weeks. First week will be in Tokyo for 3 days then fly out to Seoul for 5 days, then once in Japan straight to Nagoya for the day, Kyoto - 3 days, Osaka - 3 days. I have one last week, Where should I go for the last week? Was planning on staying in Tokyo but thought wouldn't mind moving around and seeing more of south - southwest of Japan. I'll definately head to Hiroshima for the day. Some people have recommended: Nara/Himeji/Shikoku etc... So yeah where should I go and for how many days in each city? I'll be using a JR Rail Pass.

Answer:

Head up to Kanazawa for a day if you get a chance.

Nara is nice, but nothing that special. There's nothing there you won't have already seen better versions of in Kyoto (except for the deer roaming the streets that let you pet them).

If you go to Hiroshima, then take the ferry over to Miyajima. You might also want to check out the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Nagasaki is a pretty city with some good food and attractions: Glover Garden, China Town, etc.

Fukuoka is great for living, but I'm not sure about tourist attractions. I live around Tenjin and it's wonderful, but seeing as you will have already been to Tokyo... Granted, it's still nice. If you -do- come, be sure to try Hakata Ramen (the best in Japan!).

Have fun. :)

Why is the Chernoybl option not being used in Japan? Is the IAEA doing enough to help?

Question:

Probably not a ton of nuke experts at YahooAnswers, but was wondering if anyone has found opinions by reputable experts as to what the worst case scenario means for other countries outside of Japan and if a Chernoybl solution is possible? Thanks !

Answer:

That's cause the Chernobyl option involves exposing solders to lethal radiation trying to clean up the disaster then eventually dumping a bunch on concrete on the reactor and abandoning the whole area for miles.

What are the purpose and history of japanese TENGU geta(traditional footwear)?

Question:

These geta have only 1 "tooth" holding it up instead of the usual 2. I was curious: What is the purpose of wearing something so seemingly unstable? Martial arts? Fashion? Are they only for men? Here is link to picture: http://en.citizendium.org/images/thumb/e/eb/Tengu-geta.jpg/300px-Tengu-geta.jpg

Answer:

Ipponba-geta (one-tooth geta or tengu geta)
In Japan, the one-tooth geta is believed to be used by a goblin from Japanese legends during festivals, and by mountain priests while training in fields and mountains. The tengu geta are also used by boy cheerleaders in high schools. They're good as ceremonial footwear because they give the impression that they're hard to walk with and dangerous so they aren't used as everyday geta. However, recently these geta have become more popular for previously unknown effects. They are now used for training in martial arts, for rehabilitation training, for training in mountain climbing, and are used often for teaching in school. These geta are very agile and nimble footwear for bad roads or steep slopes and are used by mountain priests who wear these geta for training in fields and mountains. At the same time they have the effect of building up one's strength. Also, because of the posture they require, they feel refreshing as they make you straighten your back and cause the soul to feel renewed. They are also called "never-fall-to-the-ground-geta". People can be superstitious about these geta and because they are "never-fall-geta" some students use them for good luck on examination day. These ipponba-geta (one tooth geta) have still more unknown effects. Can we say that the Tengu goblin's supernatural power geta is also a precious geta?

How do I write and say this in Japanese?

Question:

Hi, :)
I was listening to a song, and in a line of the song, the words were "Boku ni hohoenderu egao ga sukidayo"

Could someone please write this in Japanese for me, and tell me how to pronounce it properly?

Would really appreciate it, thanks ^^

Answer:

Boku ni hohoenderu egao ga sukidayo (boh-koo knee hoh-hoh-enderoo ega-oh ga sookee da yoh)
僕に微笑えんでる笑顔が好きだよ. (ぼくにほほえんでるえがおがすきだよ.)

Here's a breakdown of its definition:

boku = i / me (male)
ni = indicates where the action goes
hohoenderu = smiling
egao = smiling face
ga suki = like
da = informal way of saying desu.
yo = a particle added at the end of the sentence as emphasis.

boku ni hohoenderu egao ga suki dayo = I like the face that's looking at me.
