Help! I have 3 questions about Shintoism:?

Question:

Help! I have 3 questions about Shintoism:?
Can you please give me about info about the the "san hikari" lit. "three lights") are the sun, the moon, and the stars, each with its own associated color and properties. I need some information about it.

Also can you give me some information about Ofudas which are tailsman used in Shinto shrines? Can you also give me info about The Imperial Regalia of Japan?

Answer:

You'd better narrow down your questions. It's too vague just to ask "info, about something".
It's like to say "give me info. about the Holy Bible". It's hard to answer.

Three lights: It's part of the polar star faith. It had been believed that the polar star is the load of heaven, and it control the world below them. The sun, moon, star in the san hikari represent servant of the load polar star. I don't know each has its own colors.

Ofuda: Yes, its talisman made of wood or paper. It would protect people from evil.

Imperial Regalia: Three objects, the Mirror, the Gem, and the Sword are the testament of the heir to the throne. People who hold these three could ascend the genuine imperial throne.

We are filipino citizen planning to get married in japan is this possilble?

Question:

we are filipino citizen my bf was working in japan and im just in a tourist visa ? it is possible that we can get married in japan even though we are filipino citizen what would be the requirements to show? please help

Answer:

Yes it is possible.

It will be done at the city office 市役所 "shiyakusho" (or ward office 区役所 "kuyakusho") in the area where your BF is living in Japan.

Since you are both not Japanese, the documentation varies, it is best to contact one of those offices for the required documents. Paperwork is the most important part.

In addition, the Philippine Embassy (or Consulate) in Japan might need to be notified, so check with them too.

Finally after your marriage is official, you can apply for a "DEPENDENT" Status to stay in Japan with the Immigration Office.

Japanese Pokemon cursing?

Question:

i was watching the first episode of best wishes and right around 1:30 team rocket curses is ti just the person who subbed it or do they really. Just out of curiosity.

http://www.anime44.com/pokemon-best-wishes-episode-1

Answer:

No. What you were watching is called fansub. They wrongly translate things and sub how they see fit.Such as excessive and unnecessary swearing. The Pokemon anime is a children's television program so no. If you mean words like "kuso" which translate into English as "damn", it's not really considered a curse word in Japan. But I haven't heard that word in Pokemon.

What's the name of this Song?

Question:

I can't find it anywhere T__T I kind of like it a lot.

I've typed in lyrics in Kana, Romaji, and even English, there are none!
I know it's probably sang by Ricky, Dasein, R*A*P, or (extremely doubtfully) Chrome Shelled.
I know it's Ricky's voice, that's all I can say.

It's the song at the beginning.

Night train in japan?

Question:

hey guys,
will be going to japan for a few days this august. will be going to hakone for a day then will be back in tokyo for the night. but to avoid this cost of accommadation, i am looking for some night train.

i have a japan rail pass and i want a night train to hiroshima from either odawara or tokyo. are there any such trains? and where can i find the timetables?

thanks!

Answer:

JR Pass does not cover all fares for a night train even if there is one between Tokyo and Hiroshima. You have to pay night train fee. So it's not a good idea to take a night train with JR Pass.

How long does it take to drive from Kanagawa to Wakayama? Kanagawa to Hiroshima?

Question:

I'm writing a story and I need info on this. My characters simply refuse to ride the shinkansen. :P
Also, if you can include some popular tourist spot in Wakayama and Hiroshima, it would be really helpful.
Thank you so much!

Answer:

Maybe it takes ...
Kanagawa -> Wakayama : 8 hours, Kanagawa -> Hiroshima : 11 hours.

There some good navigation site. And if you rent a car, you can select a cart with a car navigation system ("カーナビ" ka-navi in Japanese writing). But it is almost impossible to use if you don't know Japanese characters. At least, you have to specify where in Kanagawa or Wakayama more detail.

Moreover, there are really heavy traffic jams. I hope you won't get that.

Is tokyo japan a good place to live?

Question:

I went there when I was a teenager and always thought it would be so cool to live there. I loved japan so much. I also went to kyoto.

Answer:

Actually, I'm living in Tokyo. It is not so bad.
Tokyo is a little wide.
There are some good places to live in Tokyo, of course bad ones too.

My wife and I love Nishiogi where we are living. This is a really good town to live.
Kichijoji and Asagaya are also good places.

But we never want to live in Shinjuku, Shibuya or Roppongi. These are too crowded, noisy and expensive.

At least, if you want to live in Tokyo, you have to know that there are some earthquakes every year :)

What do these japanese words mean?

Question:

recently i keep hearing japanese words that sound familiar. And i searched them to find out what they mean but there are some that i couldnt find (probably i spelled them wrong)
If you have any idea what one of these are can you tell me? Thanks ^_^

sassoku
gorogoro
ko-iu-funi (i think i might know what this means from context clues but just to be sure)

There was alot more but Unfortunetly thats all i can remember right now

Answer:

sassoku:
It means immediately or right away. When using it in a sentence, it kind of has the meaning,"let's do___now."
Like in this sentence: "sassoku umi ni ikou"
"let's go to the ocean now."

gorgoro:
It has several meanings:
-it can be the sound word for the sound that a thunder makes, and sometimes it's even used as a sound word for the purring noise that cats make, and like the other person said, it can be a sound word for of something rolling
-it can also be used to describe the act of being lazy and just lying around doing nothing important.
used in a sentence: "gorogoro shitenaide hayaku shukudai yarinasai!"
Stop Gorgoro-ing (haha jap-glish!) and do your homework!
It makes sense that it's used in this way since a lazy person is pretty much just "rolling around" doing nothing.

ko-iu-funi:
It means "like this"
It can be used when explaining someone how to do something "like this" and stuff like that.

This is what i hear:
忙しいのにごめんなさいね。

Im living in japan, and I want to go to america for vacation. What are the procedures to go to USA?

Question:

Answer:

Way too many factors that you haven't told us about here for anyone to answer this well. Are you a US citizen? Do you have a special visa in Japan that would require you to get special permission to return to Japan after your vacation? If you're a US citizen, you shouldn't have any problems beyond whatever is required to get your return permit so you can go back to Japan at the end of your trip.

Security of Hotels in Japan?

Question:

I was wondering if if anybody could give feedback on security regarding rooms over in Japan. I will be going to Japan in the Spring, but I am concerned about where I can safely keep my suitcase. I've heard that if you don't purchase a night stay in a Western style hotel, then you don't really have a place to keep your stuff while your away. (I would like to check in, drop my stuff off and check out the location without having to lug a huge suitcase around) Someone told me that Youth hostels or traditional hotel rooms aren't good places to leave your things because there are no locked doors. I've also been told that "Capsule Hotels" don't have anywhere to put any of your things so that you are worry free while you explore. Could anyone help? Thanks for any advice you can give!

Answer:

I don't think you would have any problems about your suite case either at descent Ryokan or Youth Hostels. They nowadays have room locks.
If, only if they don't, you can safely ask the staff of a facility to keep the suite case somewhere in a safe and secured place, of coarse free of charge.

Is it hard for a foreigner to get by in Japan?

Question:

What I mean is, do many people speak English? Are things like menus and signs written in both Japanese characters and the Romanized version (I would never expect them to be written in English). Is it reasonably easy to get by with certain phrases?

Answer:

Train station signs and major streets signs will be translated. However food menus are for the most part in Japanese (no romanization etc).

Generally if you go to the tourist areas you can travel around pretty easily. At restaurants, good old body language, phrase books etc help most tourists get by.

If you intend to live there, learning the language really helps out.

What do Japanese people think of Americans in japan?

Question:

Im asking cause im thinking about moving there.

Answer:

Many people outside of America believed they are controlled by the media and hollywood. Japan, is although a country that is not very fond of foreigners to their land. I think it depends on the person, but probably the major idea among people who don't know the U.S. well is big houses, big cars, junk food lifestyle, big and cheerful people and schooling that don't have as much rules as they do in Japan.

Can you translate what he's saying in this video?

Question:

It's a scene from an anime, and a boy is saying something. I'm wondering what he's saying, and doubt the subtitle is correct. So I need a translation made by a native/fluent speaker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUEV99Mjo…

Answer:

hitomebore to iuno wa monosugoku iikagen na kotoba dato omou
「一目ぼれ」というのは、ものすごくいい加減な言葉だと思う。
(subtitle) "I think "love at first sight" is an extremely meaningless phrase."

"iikagen" usually means "irresponsible", but it depends on how the speaker says after this.
could also mean "not reasonable" "corny" "cliche", so for him it might be "meaningless"

"kotoba" is word/wording/expression, not a "phrase"

My child's father is a foreigner too it is possible that he can extent my tourist visa japan ?

Question:

my child's father is a foreigner too were born in the same country .. it is possible that he can't extend my visa that he has a good job in japan and he work in a big company i'm living with him now and our son left in our country now that my visa is yet to expired did you think the father of my child can fix it in a short span of time ?pls help what probable visa that immigration consul give to me ??

Answer:

I don't think you can extend a tourist visa. The best solution is for you two to get married. You already have a child. It's still not something you can solve in a short period of time. You'll probably have to leave the country and have him file for a dependent visa, that's assuming you marry. If you don't marry you'll have to leave the country or risk arrest & deportation. If that happens, you can't return for at least five years. Japan doesn't joke.

What's the name of the caucasian TV host in Japan?

Question:

I saw him on TV briefly... he's a white guy and hosts a talk show or game show in Japan. He speaks fluent Japanese obviously.

Answer:

There are many caucasian "talents" on Japanese TV shows.
But a few of them have (or had) their own programs as a host.

Peter Barakan and Patrick Harlan are two of them.
Neither of them were born in Japan, but their capabilities in Japanese language are just amazing!
They are mainly working with NHK. Check them out.

Although this is not an NHK program, you can enjoy their rare encounter and conversation (in English, though).

Native Japanese speakers -Kanji Help?

Question:

So I'm getting the bushido code tattoo'd on my arm. I was told though, that its possible that when the characters are lined up next to each other, they could possibly mean something else entirely. So If I were to place these characters vertically, the first row on my left arm, and the last row in the link on my right arm, again running vertically, will it change its meaning?

Have you been to Japan? Is it as beautiful as it seems?

Question:

I've never been to Japan. I'm so excited about visiting it. It seems so different and exotic. And there are so many things to do. The Cherry Blossom seems wonderful, also there are so many weird things I wish to explore like capsul hotels and bullet trains. Have you been? And would you recommend a visit?

Answer:

Yes, it's beautiful, but if your image of Japan is just of "weird" and "exotic" things, or of the images tourists often see, you will most likely be disappointed. There is a lot more to Japan than cherry blossoms (which are seasonal so unless you're there at a specific time of the year you won't see them), capsule hotels, and bullet trains. Japan being a modern nation, it has all of the same things your average modern, first-world nation has -- both positive and negative things. I would recommend a trip to Japan but I would also recommend some research before you go so you're not stuck expecting more stereotypes than Japan has to give.

Is it safe to visit Japan now?

Question:

Answer:

WARNING!!! ThreeDayPriest's tolerance for this same question is reaching a critically low level.

At the top of the page, there's a box with a label that says Search Y! Answers. Put the same question in and see how many times that question has been asked. Also find the same answers being given over and over again.

People, learn to search a bit before you ask. It's not that people on here aren't glad to help, but making just a small effort yourself is good for you mental well-being.

Does Japan have section 8?

Question:

I want to move to Japan and I want to know if they have section 8.

If they do have anything like section 8, it won't be available unless you're a citizen. Japan only wants people who can support themselves.

Good small Japanese city to visit?

Question:

Two summers ago, I lived in Kōriyama in Fukushima prefecture for three months. I have a friend majoring in Japanese that'd love to visit and we were going to go there since I have friends and know the city, but there's so much radiation that we can't.

Here's what I loved about Kōriyama.
- Decent sized city. Has everything you need, but it's easy to access anywhere. Not as big as a lot of the other cities I'd seen there.
- It had BEAUTIFUL parks and mountains and was just so gorgeous.
- It was very Japanese. I didn't see ANY other Americans while I stayed there. This is embarrassing to admit, but I rather loved the attention as the only American teenager in my area. When I visited Tokyo and Hiroshima, they were so accustomed to foreigners that we were just kinda ignored.

What cities would be good for me and my friend to look into?

Answer:

There are many great small towns and cities in Japan.

Gifu - the gateway to the beautiful and superb mountain scenery and hiking trails of Nagano. Gifu City is a lovely small city overlooked by mountains.

Gifu Japan

Takayama - Takayama (高山市) is a small beautiful city known for its traditional architecture and crafts. Takayama lies in the ancient Hida district tucked away between the mountains of the Japan Alps.

Gero - famous for its onsen (mineral hot spring spa). The town is fairly compact, making it easy to walk around and go hot-spring hopping.

Why are these things frowned upon in japan?

Question:

I read on the internet that in japan you should never eat on the go, blow your nose in public and don't talk on your phone in public places. Why is that? I'm just wondering/curious. The reason why i'm asking is i know someone in japan and we keep in touch every now and then and i thought i'd look up some things about japan. From what i've read it's a really cool country and i'd love to go there some day!! What other things do foreigner's need to know when visiting japan and can you explain why that is. Also how long does it take for a parcel to get to japan from ireland. I'm guessing 5 days. I'd like to get the parcel over even quicker, maybe 2 days if possible. Also would i be able to send brown bread (home made) and jam. Is there restrictions about certain foods being allowed to enter into another country. The person in japan liked the bread and the jam when they were here and i'd like to send them over some that's why i need the parcel to get to them as soon as possible so the bread will still be fresh enough to eat. I've send over sweets/chocolates before and that was fine. Thanks.

Answer:

Eating whilst walking - This is something you -do- see now. However, the popular view is that you should enjoy your food and appreciate it. If you're hurrying whilst stuffing a chocolate bar into your mouth, you can't be appreciating it. It's all about respect for food. If you need to eat while on the go, take a seat and a few minutes to properly appreciate what you're eating. Also, if you're walking whilst eating, there's a possibility of spilling food, either on yourself, the street, or people around you. This isn't being respectful of your environment or other people.

Additionally, you must consider the way that Japanese people present food. They often take painstaking measures to present it. For example, wrapping, etc. Just scarfing it down outside the shop ignores all that. If you take it home, you can fully appreciate the effort put into its outward appearance. It may seem odd, but spend a few weeks in Japan, and you'll start to understand the culture of presentation. It has utmost importance.

Blowing your nose - It is not the end of the world if you absolutely have to blow your nose in public. However, it is much, much better, to polite excuse yourself to the bathroom and blow your nose to your heart's content there. Japanese people often dab at their nose with a tissue when they have a cold. It was a bit frustrating for me at first, but you do get used to it. Also, packets of tissues are handed out everywhere (integral to advertising campaigns), so try to stick to those. A handkerchief a bit unseemly and you should definitely not blow your nose in public on one of those!

Putting aside that it's just a bit gross - even in the UK, I really try to avoid doing it - there is also supposedly some history to it. The rumour is that in Meiji times (a period of great political upheaval in contemporary Japan) it was said that diseases were more likely to be passed on through the use of unclean handkerchiefs. Consider that in Europe, spitting was also regarded in this way. In Japan, spitting was only deemed to be an unseemly action by the Meiji government some time later.

Talking on your phone in a public place - Well, this is both true and not true. You'll see a lot of young people talking on their phone now, but businessmen do it too. However, it's far more popular to mail, or text. Many people, young and old, spend inordinate amounts of time messaging people. You should not talk on your phone on public transport - in fact, make SURE your phone is on silent. It is nothing short of embarrassing when someone's phone goes off on the train. Don't talk lously with your friends either. It is better to text quietly and to murmur to your friend if you have anything necessary to say. At night, it is often a little noisier, so you can probably have a chat with a friend, on a Tokyo train, for example.

More etiquette basics -

- Take your shoes off in the genkan (entrance hall) of someone's house. Do NOT wear your shoes inside the house. It's considered rude and unclean. You will be given slippers if they are available. Most Japanese houses have guest slippers for this purpose.

-Never stick your chopsticks upright in food. It's something that is done at funerals.

- Be as modest as possible

- Learn to bow. Nothing dramatic. A little nod of the head will suffice.

- Learn the word sumimasen (soo-mee-ma-sen). It's perpetually useful. If you need help, always use it first. If you want to get past, use it. If you want to apologise, use it. If you want to greet someone, you can even use it then!

-Taking a bath. Always use the shower first. Be completely clean before you even step into the bath - it is for relaxing, not cleaning yourself (no bubbles!). Also, do not empty the bathwater. It is likely that other family members will need to use it after you, and refilling the bath us a huge waste.

And here's one of the most important tips - learn to ask for help. Japanese people are amongst the most courteous and polite in the world. It is likely they'll already appreciate that you're unclear on Japanese customs, and they'll be only too happy to help you out, providing that you're polite and humble about it. Don't get too stressed about doing things perfectly.

I would not recommend sending bread. If anything happens to delay the post, your friend could end up with a very mouldy package. In regards to jam, check regulations of the mail service you want to use. For example, the Royal Mail website is very explicit about what you can and cannot send. You can send food through the post, but you must declare it. Anything potentially dangerous cannot be sent. You could also use an express mail service, such as FedEx or DHL. But as I say, restrictions differ, as do costs. Get your information and check with your friend before you post anything. It's better to send long-lasting treats like tea, or sweets. I find they are always appreciated :)

I hope all of this information helps. Good luck!

Hamlet in Japanese question?

Question:

Could anyone please translate this line into English? I've been trying to find the original English words for it, but I'm not too sure about its meaning. I have two versions of its possible translation in my head.
われわれは何であるかを知るも、

その先どうなるかを知らず
At least maybe you remember who exactly said it?
It's from Shakespeare's "Hamlet"

Answer:

That looks like

We know what we are,
but know not what we may be.

Ophelia says it in Act IV, Scene V. The contemporary English phrasing would be "We know what we are, but don't know what we might become."

Does that sound right?

Tips to travel to Mt Fuji?

Question:

1.From Yokohama what is the cheap way of travelling to Mt Fuji?
2. Do you require warm cloths at 5th station in August?
Thank you in advance?

Answer:

I needed a thick jacket and pants to climb! At the beginning it's very warm, but you'll get colder as you go up. I'd suggest thick clothing if you're climbing, but if you're just going to 5th station you should be okay. It might be chilly, and definitely foggy. I'd wear a light jacket.

And I took the Shinkansen, cheaper alternative would be a regular train, to Tokyo and then I took a bus to Fuji. Since you're already in Yokohama, I would just take a bus if you can find one that goes to Fuji.

Help getting English teacher job in Tokyo?

Question:

I want to become an English teacher in Japan. I want to be able to decide where I live and a good fixed salary would be nice. My original plan was to be a teacher through Gaba, because I can decide where I live and what my hours are, but apparently instead of a fixed salary I'm paid for the hours I work. I don't like that setup...

Also, I had wanted to live in Shinjuku or Shibuya in a loft or studio apartment. However, I'm told this is unrealistic financially. So is there anywhere just outside the JR Yamanote line but near Shinjuku or Shibuya where I could rent an apartment for less money?

LINKS PLEASE

Answer:

Kichijoji is a good place where you can go to Shinjuku or Shibuya easily and cheaper than those places.

How popular are Indian restaurants in Tokyo, do they sell vegetarian food?

Question:

How much should I expect to pay for a dinner for two?

Answer:

Foreign restaurants like Indian are in major cities in Japan and do offer nice tasty dishes. For me, the best veggie dishes are the Indian ones. If you can track down an Indian restaurant, you will have a nice time. If you can afford to, take a trip to India and enjoy authentic Indian food found no where else.

Are earthquakes in tokyo really bad?

Question:

i wanna no cuz ive always wanted to go to tokyo (even move there when im older) but everybody tells me earthquakes there are horible. Is that true? and how many time a month/year do they have earthquakes?

Answer:

NO, for short.

Usually a lot of smaller earthquakes occur after a huge earthquake.
In Tokyo, I have felt some quakes after 3.11.
You can see the history of them from this site:
http://typhoon.yahoo.co.jp/weather/jp/ea…

But about 30 million people are living around Tokyo.
And after 3.11, I've never heard any damages caused by quakes.

What is the japanese of "present"?

Question:

Answer:

good lord. "Present" can be an adjective, verb, or noun.

present adj.: He is present in class. (出席している) shusseki shite iru.

present v. : present a (prize) ご褒美を(贈呈)する zoutei suru.

present n.: プレゼント purezento --- like a christmas present. That's the easiest one to use if you are talking about a gift/present.

And there are many other uses of "present" in English but probably one of these three right?

And Google Translate is like asking a monkey to do your taxes---it doesn't add up. Don't use it without someone who can proofread it. (by proofread, I mean change everything it says and start again from scratch.)

Advice about living near Shinjuku/Shibuya?

Question:

I want to live near Shinjuku or Shibuya in Tokyo and be close to the most youthful parts of Tokyo. Would I still be able to experience this if I live somewhere on the Yamanote line (i.e. Ikebukuro, Ebisu)? I'm also very interested in any artsy districts (i.e. cafes, Apple stores, modern art museums)

Also, I was thinking to rent a live-work loft or a studio apartment on the Yamanote line... Gaba says they will pay me ¥250,000. Do you have any links to find lofts/studios around that rate?

If you just answer part of the question that's ok.

Answer:

It's unrealistic to live in Shibuya or Shinjuku only with 250,000 yen salary. You have to pay taxes and others so your actual disposable income will be like 210,000 yen.

And it will cost you 100,000 yen even for a small studio in Shibuya or Shinjuku. You wouldn't have much money to spend on other things.

>Would I still be able to experience this if I live somewhere on the Yamanote line (i.e. Ikebukuro, Ebisu)?

You can easily go to other places as Tokyo has extensive train network. I think Sugamo or Komagome are cheaper places on Yamanote line.

How is it like being black in japan?

Question:

I want to go to japan when i get older. I was planing to go to college their but i dont know when japan will recover from the earthquake and sunami. hopefully it wont take a long time. Anyway ive heard that people have many expierence in japan and some are nice and some are not. I actually plan to live their after i learn more things while im college. I was just hoping some one could tell me how its like. and please be as detailed as you want. dont leave any rude comments please. thanks

Answer:

1. For college, you'll probably need financial aid. At least your parents will appreciate it if you got some. So look for scholarship opportunities. As a black female (are you a black female?) There are lots of scholarships available in the USA. At least some of them have to be for overseas study.

I would recommend doing your freshman year of college in the USA (you're too young to drink anyway in Japan until you're twenty), and then in your second year, move on to Japan. But the credits don't transfer usually.

Check out Temple University, and the several other Universities that have campuses in Japan.

Or do grad school, or go to a language school after you graduate from University in the USA. Many choices.
I know many black folks living in Japan, from the USA, UK, Jamaica,South Africa, Haiti, and Africa. You will hear that there are so many Africans in Tokyo/other big cities, that people tend to think all blacks are Africans. Africans are known for their dubious employment and their tendency to say they are "American" while speaking Nigerian pidgin English that no one understands.
JET hires from all over the English speaking world, which is how I met South Africans (black and white), and a Jamaican English teacher. But of course most black English teachers are from the USA.
You know how it is. Old people tend to be intimidated. Young women (high school girls,) if you are female will talk about your body. (they do this with white girls too.) Since Japanese kids rarely see blacks or whites in rural areas, if you live there, you will hear it. "Her skin is the color of chocolate!" or to me "His nose is huge! He looks like Pinnochio!" or commenting on a girl's breast size (other girls and even grown women do this.)---However this kind of stuff is considered rude by most Japanese so it's usually kids who say something. And it's not the "I hate you" type of racism, it's more like "Wow...Look at it! " like you are an object at a zoo.

Blacks in Japan have told me they cannot stand to hear whites in Japan talk about "racism" because even today, and definitely 50 years ago, blacks had it much, much worse in the USA than they would have had in Japan.

You have to understand that us whites from the USA have never been a minority (well, some of us) so it is our first time being the only white guy on the train, and have people look at us. Some white people get really, really angry about this. But some blacks say "Hey it's better than Arkansas." so I guess I can understand that.

Will my debit card work in Japan?

Question:

I recently got a new debit mastercard, but it doesn't have a cirrus logo on the back like my old one did. Where the cirrus logo was now just has the mastercard logo. Will it still work in Japanese 7/11 atms?

Answer:

Yes it will work but next time please ask your bank and not us as they are in a better position to advice you. Also inform them of your travels i.e. when you will be in and out so that they don't block your card if you decide to use it (thinking it is fraudulent). While you are at it, have a look at prepaid Visa, MasterCard's etc for use in Japan as they have cheaper rates than current debit and credit cards

Is safe to travel to Japan?

Question:

we are planning on having our honeymoon in Japan on March 2012. Im concerned about the radiation after I read this
http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/japan-widens-ban-on-radioactive-beef-to-miyagi

Answer:

99%+ of Japan is safe. The only danger zone there is about a 20 km radius around the Fukushima nuke plant.
The problem with the beef is some cows were fed contaminated hay. That beef is being recalled and destroyed.
What you're talking about is 8 months away. No one can tell you hoe things will be at that time.

Little Jumping Spiders?

Question:

Since the weather has turned warm and its started to rain often I've been finding these small black and light brown spiders that instead of crawling they mostly jump from one spot to the other. . .they aren't very big but they aren't tiny either and they are kindof compact (legs aren't spread out far from its body)

they really freak me out to no end. . .so i'd like to more about them. . .I come from Dover, Delaware in the US and I've never seen a spider jump or even one bigger than the width of a toothbrush.

Have you found them in your place? what kind of spider is it? anything else?

Answer:

Yes actually I have.

I live in Wisconsin and one day while picking up my little brothers room i found two. They were brown, "compact" as you say, and they jumped.

I think it might be the "Phidippus audax"
It's the most common household jumping spider.
Pic
http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Phidippus…
Obviously an extreme close up

"Jumping spiders commonly reside near doorjambs and windowsills."

Wikipedia says "The average size of adults ranges from roughly 13 to 20 mm in length."
That sounds about the size of the ones I found in my brothers room.

I also found this "This species is common in southeastern Canada, most of the United States and parts of northern Central America, and has been introduced to Hawaii and the Nicobar Islands."

Hope this helped and that's the spider your talking about (:

What does japan look like now?

Question:

Any recent Pictures after all the earthquakes and everything? I really wanna see how it looks over there.

Answer:

We've been there last April (a month after the earthquake) to visit my dad, we've never mind whatever danger we will face because we love the country. I'm a Filipino and I have been amazed on what their country is, it still looks the same when we've been there for the last two years.. There are no signs of panicking, the country is still beautiful and organized and the people are still happy, hospitable and polite(for me Japanese people are the most hospitable and politest people here on earth). It's really different to my country. But I don't know, we've never been to Fukushima, we only stayed at Tokyo.. It's really fun there and I hope I will be there again because my dad is back to sea for his work.. :D

Is japan still in ruins?

Question:

also did they fix the radiation problem?

Answer:

First off, MOST OF JAPAN, the VAST MAJORITY of Japan wasn't destroyed, nor was it affected by the tsunami. The major areas encompass the coastal regions of northeastern Japan, they are still working to rebuild, and it will take years.

The rest of Japan, the vast majority of Japan is fine and operating in an almost normal condition, given the circumstances.

Can you translate this message from Japanese to English?

"隣にいるのが当たり前やから。2人のギターが鳴っているというのがもう当たり前…

Answer:

The poster seems to have Kansai dialect, it should be:

隣にいるのが当たり前だから。
Because it's natural that they (those duo guitar players) are/sit/play together,
二人のギターが鳴っているというのがもう当たり前になっているから、
As it also came natural to them that their guitars sound well-harmonized,
逆に相手のことをいい意味であまり考えていないというか。
they even seem not to bother each other.

*いい意味で(言えば)お互いのことをあまり考えていない
--> if two people have known each other (been working together) for a long time, they don't care/bother each other, like an old couple. That could be similar sense the poster wanted to describe.
*...というか: slang when you give your opinion such as "something like that" "seems like" "kinda"

Student visa in japan with dui felony?

Question:

is it possible to get a student visa to study abroad in japan with a dui felony?

Answer:

First, the following link provides answers to a question very similar to yours. Maybe they will be food for thought.....

http://ask.metafilter.com/59526/Getting-…

A phone call to the Japanese Embassy might answer your question, but there is always the chance that they will ask YOU some questions, one of the worst being your name. But they are the one with the answer.

If you say 'no' to the question of previous criminal records, well....

1- If they catch it during the screening process I think you have a snowball's chance in Hades of getting visa approval.

2- If for some reason they find out after you are in Japan, I expect you would find yourself in a jail cell waiting to be deported.

I'm sorry, but I think your question is one that nobody on this forum can answer definitively. In my opinion it is possible. Just depends on how the immigration officer is feeling the day he reviews your application.

Are Japanese people racist?

Question:

If they are, why? And I heard they don't like any other race but theirs .. (Not what I said I heard it's true)

Answer:

This question gets asked a lot, if I had a yen for every time this question is asked, I could quit my day job.

In Japan you WON'T:
-Get hanged/killed because your skin color is different.
-Have to sit at the back of the bus because your skin color is different.
-Be denied service at most mainstream establishments because your skin color is different.

How many stories do you hear about someone getting killed in Japan because someone didn't like that they were from another country? How many stories of race riots between Japanese people and foreigners? How many stories of Japanese version of skinheads going out killing foreigners? Haven't heard stories about that in Japan.

Now think about your home country right now and how much of that stuff happens in your own country.

In every country you have people who are like this, depends on who you run into. Tell me any country that doesn't have racist or elements of racism in it's subculture. Even in great USA you got large amounts of racism. Depends on who you run into.

For the most part, as long as you don't act like a fool while in Japan, people won't treat you like a fool.

Do I need a round trip ticket to Japan with a work Visa?

Question:

I am an American with a valid work visa for Japan but I can not find any information on if I need a round trip ticket or not.
I know that those entering the country with no visa/student visa need one, but what about work visa?
Thank you!

Answer:

ALL foreigners, regardless of which Visa they carry, are required to present return airfare documentation to the Immigration officials when traveling TO Japan.
The date of return doesn't matter as long as it is a return ticket.
This is a measure to keep illegal foreign immigrants to a minimum.

Advice on using a language exchange program?

Question:

I've always known about these, but I never really considered joining one until recently. I want to learn Japanese, and I've been to websites where someone wants to learn english and will "exchange" their language-they'll teach japanese, and I would teach them english.

I see that these websites could be really helpful in my learning of this language, but I'm not sure I'd be a good study partner. Even though I speak english(my native tongue), I'm not sure if I can *teach* english very well. I was always nervous I couldn't be a very good english teacher. Has anyone else had this problem/conflict? I'd appreciate your thoughts and tips. Thank you! :)

Answer:

You could go to lang-8. It's a a language exchange developed in Kyoto. You write a diary of your day, or anything really in the language you are learning, and other people correct it. Then you can correct the grammar and answer questions based on your own language. It's also a good way to make friends.

Guide on moving to Japan にほん てんじゅう?

Question:

I have finally decided that I will move to the land of the rising sun. It has always been my dream to move to japan, I feel like I was meant to live there. I live in England and to be honest there is nothing wrong with where I live but I just think I would much better prefer the culture and customs of japan.

I have started to learn japanese and I can now construct words in hiragana and recognise japanese speech but of course it won't end here, its just the beginning ^^ Any tips on learning japanese?

I am 17 and I understand how hard it is to get citizenship or permanent residence and understand that ill need a degree if I'm to find work: I have no idea what I want to do when I'm older... Any ideas of what to study to find a decent job in japan? (apart from teaching... I already know about that)

I want to buy a house there too and maybe able to pay for the house upfront without a loan. Any places that are ideal to live in (inside tokyo) that are safe and cheap?

Do I have to watch out for racism and discrimination? " im already aware of the "no foreigner signs" ^^

How long will it take to acquire residency, what challenges will I face?

What kind of salary should I belooking to earn if I want to live comfortably and afford shopping and gaming and other leisure activities? ^^

Any thing else I should know?

Answer:

Here's an idea. When you turn 18 you can go there on a working holiday visa. You can stay there up to a year on that. This would give you enough time to decide if you like it or not.
Then you can return to England & get your degree.
Tokyo is the hardest place to find work there. But you never know. Nothing in Tokyo is cheap. A friend of mine was paying almost $800 a month for a small studio apartment.
There are few no gaijin signs these days. You have to be there for at least 5 years to get a permanent resident card. Citizenship is much harder .
It's all possible. Stay in school and do the best you can.

Do the Japanese enjoy having Americans in Japan?

Question:

In the future I would like to go to Japan. But, I was wondering if the Japanese enjoy having Americans over there, or if they dislike it. Please let me know.

Answer:

Wow, there seems to be a lot more racism on this board than there is in Japan.

I have lived in Japan for over 4 years now, and I can honestly say that most Japanese are not particularly racist. In big cities like Tokyo and Osaka they see lots of foreigners, and you'll be pretty much ignored, the same way you would at home. In smaller places, they don't see many foreigners, and it is true that some young kids will point and stare - but that's just because they are surprised, intrigued and in some cases a bit scared maybe. Even some adults will stare, but they are generally not doing it intentionally. You are there and you are different, so their eyes naturally go to you.

In my experience (something most people here don't seem to have), Japanese people are generally kind to a fault - provided you are a decent, respectful human being. You'll be fine. In fact, I am confident you'll be more than just fine - you'll love it.

Japanese exchange program?

Question:

I want to do an exchange when I'm about 16 or 17 (I'm only 14). I live in Canada Ontario. So I need a good exchange program that is for Canada. A lot of sites were only for Americans (ugh :P c’mon people, Canadians want to go to other places too!) Something that is YEARLONG and I go to a Japanese Co-ed high school, and I stay with a host family. The price can’t be a lot. Like I don’t know how much a lot would be for this, but I don’t need to go to some high class high school for the rich! I just want to go to a normal Japanese high school where most normal Japanese teens go. I don’t think one where we do a switch with the host family would be a good thing. So it would just be me going to japan and not having the host families son or daughter go to Canada and live with my family. We had a Korean girl stay with my family a couple years ago and it didn’t turn out too well. My dad didn’t like her very much (she was a spoiled brat, pretty much. She was rude to everyone. My family would say no anyways :P haha bad experience). So, if someone could tell me a good exchange program is, and has the requirements that I need, that would be perfect! :D Maybe some to avoid that aren’t very good. What do you think is the cheapest price I can get? What is the most this trip would cost. How much money would I have to bring for my own spending money? Any tips? Haha, thanks! :D

Answer:

Try Rotary! :) There are rotary clubs all over the world, just try to find the one closest to you. They find a family for you, pay for your school, take you on trips, and even give you a monthly allowance. All you have to pay for really is your plane ticket, a visa and passport, and insuarance! :)

Is it true that most Filipinos are kind of crazy about Japan, but most Japanese think Filipinos are inferior?

Question:

Well, like, I know that there is no exact right or wrong answer, but based on your own personal experiences and insight, what do you think?

Answer:

It's my personal theory:

When Japanese economy was very good and that of Philippine was bad, many Filipino came to Japan as illegal immigrant. It once became social problems.
For most Japanese people, most of Filipinos they have met in their life are illegal immigrant.
These illegal immigrant tend to work on sort of "low end job" or even "illegal job"; including hostes at pubs and prostitution.
I guess it's one reason that make Japanese people tend to consider Filipinos are inferior.

Plus, most Japanese feel Filipinos are "good people" as a person, even he/she is illegal immigrant.
They tend not to cause serious crimes, compared with illegal immigrants came from other nations.
In this real world, "good people" tend to be treated less emphasized.

How do you say "hotels" in Japanese?

Question:

And how is "hotels" written in Japanese letters?

In Japanese, so you say ホテル, which is hoteru in Japanese, which is just the Japanese saying of "hotel".

In Japanese you would not say "hotels" with an "s" because they do not use plural nouns in Japanese.

If a black girl goes Japan will japanese people stare in weardness, what will there reaction be?

Question:

I would love to go japan to go school or just to visit?
But im thinking.
If i do take school there or what ever will people be racist or just be freaked out and kinda not talk to me??
Or just be normal about it?

Answer:

I had two female African American female friends (they are sisters) visit Japan for almost two weeks, they had a fantastic time and want to come back ASAP.

I knew another lady from Canada who was working in an office here on a working holiday visa, never heard any complaints from her.

People in Japan will not kill you for being black, you won't be beat up for being black, service will be provided when needed, you won't be required to sit at the back of the bus, or use the "colored only" toilets...

There are crazies in every country of the world, these people are generally a small minority that keep the fires burning. I cannot guarantee that there might be a silly person out there that might say something, but for the most part, I know people who have had wonderful times in Japan and they are black females. It's the same thing, where I don't think you can guarantee that a Japanese person coming to America will not face racism. For the most part, most of the time, people come and have an enjoyable trip without problems.

They aren't going to "Freak out" I mean what do you mean? You aren't the first black person to ever step foot in Japan.

Act respectful, don't be a fool in public and most people will treat you the same.

>>"If you can't speak the language( which I am guessing you can't) there is no way you will go to school there. "<<

Not true, they can:
1. Attend a university that teaches in English (Eg. Temple University Japan, half the students there are Japanese but instruction is done in English), other universities have classes that are for international students, exchange students etc, International Christian University (ICU) for example and Keio University has an international program for speakers of English.

2. There are graduate programs that are also taught in English in Japan.

3. They attend as a student at a Japanese language school.

When did Britain and Japan meet?

Question:

around what year did Britain and Japan 'discover' each other?

Answer:

It's not a simple one date in history encounter and it also depends on what you mean by "discover".

Britain and all of Europe knew about Japan long before Will Adams' arrival in Japan in 1600. They knew it from the Portuguese who in 1543 were the first westerners to find the way to Japan, but kept the navigation directions a state secret. The "rudder" which is the term for the maritime log which contained navigational data on how to get to a place was stolen or copied by the Dutch.

From the stolen rudder information, the Dutch set out for Japan and Adams was an Englishman working for the Dutch as a ship's pilot on board on of the ships in a fleet sent to Japan.

Adams shipwrecked in Japan 1600, but he was not able to send any letters to communicate with Britain until 1611, so until his letters reached England as far as anyone in Britain was concern, Adams was dead or missing.

In 1613, the first English ship arrived in Japan with the first official diplomatic and trades mission from Britain.

So take your pick.

What exactly is a japanese Geisha...?

Question:

I saw a movie called "Memories of a geisha" and searched online
are they really prostitutes or something?

Answer:

"Memoirs of a Geisha" is a work of fiction written by a white man whose access to the geisha world was limited at best and who turned to Orientalism and Western fantasies about geisha to sell his book. Geisha are highly-trained artists and entertainers who spend their working lives studying and perfecting several Japanese arts, including dancing, singing, playing instruments, and tea ceremony (you might also hear people mention things like flower arranging and calligraphy, but I'm not so convinced that those are essential geisha skills). At parties they provide entertainment, have lively conversations with guests, and play games. People who regularly hire geisha and maiko (apprentices) are fully aware that they are NOT buying sex or even the chance for sex, and while a geisha might make the choice to sleep with a client for some reason sex is not part of the typical bargain and most guests will be going home at the end of the night.

In the past, geisha were legally barred from selling sex because of fears that it would take work away from the actual courtesans and prostitutes. Of course, just because something is illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Many geisha who worked at hot springs resorts also sold sex, and it is highly likely that at least a few geisha who worked in places like Kyoto sold sex too for whatever reason. And of course mizuage was a sexual thing back then (these days it's just a nice dinner and a change of hairstyle for the maiko), but that is because a virgin geisha was seen to be as odd as a virgin wife. The simple fact of the matter is that geisha as a group have never been defined as prostitutes in Japanese culture, and it is also important to keep in mind that Japan and the Western world often have very different views on sex. Personally, I don't think a single act of selling sex (like mizuage) is enough to make someone a prostitute, and I don't think a few people selling sex is enough to make an entire profession one of prostitution. Geisha are now and have always been first and foremost high-class entertainers and artists.

Ryokan apartment in Japan?

Question:

Hi I am looking for a ryokan style apartment in Japan. Tatami mat floors, the sliding doors. Max 70,000 yen a month and pet friendly. I have found a couple but I would like some more choices. Any recommendations?
(please don't answer if you haven't been there or don't know what I am talking about!)

Answer:

Ryokan is one style of hotel. We do not say "ryokan apartment" in Japan.

If you want to rent a Japanese style apartment, there are millions in Japan. But few of them are pet-friendly.

And you must have a visa to move to Japan first of all.

Description about tsunami in japan,?

Question:

effects

Answer:

The height of the tide exceed 75 feet (at Ofunato city), and the water reached to 130 feet altitude (at Miyako City.) It was far greater than any imagination. They are not prepared for that big tsumani. About 16,000 confirmed death and another 5,000 people are still missing. Nuclear power plants lost its all electricity and control, it's still out of control. Many small and medium-sized manufacturing factories got serious damages, and it impacted even big companies like Toyota, which locate in non-damaged area, to halt their production for several months. The tsunami was caused by the earthquake, but tsunami caused far more damage than tsunami. Buildings and facilities are mostry prepared for big earthqueke but not ready for that big tsunami.

How to use US iphone 4 for JP softbank?

Question:

Answer:

You need to get the phone unlocked. I know AT&T won't do it for you, and I highly doubt Verison will either, which means you'll need to do it yourself (and thus void your warranty). However, it can only be done on certain radio versions (if you've updated your phone in the last year or so, you're probably out of luck)

Is this just to add drama in japanese manga/drama or is it true?

Question:

So I noticed that in many drama and manga the guy or the girl is required to marry a guy/girl her/his parents picked. I was wondering if this kind of stuff still happens in Japan. I know not everything in manga/drama is true and sometimes things are added to create more drama.
So I was wondering about this fact.

Please help.

Thanks!

Answer:

Not the way I am interpreting what you are saying. But there are still omiai, more of an arranged meeting with the idea of marriage being considered. Even though the parents are at this meeting, the couple is supposedly left alone for a while and the final decision is still supposedly up to the couple. One site says this is common. It's not something that I generally inquire about with people I know so I don't know really how common it is.
