Japanese Hiragana P's?

Question:

Ok so i get all the other series but the P's (pa', 'pi', 'pu', 'pe', 'po') why in Hiragana do they have circles above them http://japanese-lesson.com/characters/hiragana/index.html if you look at the P row why do they have circles above them?

Answer:

That is what designates that the sound is changed to the P sound.
Without any marking, the pronunciation is the H series (ha/hi/fu/heho)
With the " marking, the pronunciation is the B series (ba/bi/bu/be/bo)

They just couldn't think of 10 more original characters to use that would look appropriate and yet be royalty-free. (They're so fussy about things like that)

Difference between 奥さん、妻 and 家内?

Question:

I have been wondering which to use (well, when to use "kanai" and when to use tsuma to be more precise). I know that okusan is for someone else's wife whereas tsuma and kanai for ones own wife but not the difference between kanai and tsuma.

So when to use which (especially between kanai and okusan) is my question.

Also, if I want to talk about wives in general, which should I use? Or does that depend on the circumstances as well?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:

It's interesting because a married man's impression (generation, region etc.) is roughly judged by how the person addresses his wife...

奥さん should be used between friends / informal (heard among younger generation)
妻 sounds the most common wording, but mostly in written / formal
家内 heard in business talk / at work/ his 50's (not too informal) / sounds intellectual (to me)

So if you talk to your friend about your wife, 奥さん would be fine.

------- In addition;
女房 nyoubou: his 60's or his marriage life should be longer/ could be a 演歌 enka fan
--> Once my husband (non-Japanese) said "watashino nyoubou ga..." at his work, everybody laughed out... (the wording simply doesn't match a foreigner)
連合い tsureai: ditto
上さん kami-san: Most my male friends use this (Tokyo region)
嫁さん yome-san: literally means "the one who came to our family (=bride)"
I think it's used more in West Japan. Personally I don't like this expression...

Where in Tokyo is the better place to stay?

Question:

I'm going to be staying in Tokyo over Christmas, but this is my first time in Japan, and I want to know the better place to stay to sight-see.

The choices are between Ikebukuro and Asakusa.

The Asakusa hotel is better and cheaper, but I've been told that it can be a little awkward to get to the big places like Shinjuku and Akihabara. The hotel at Ikebukuro isn't as nice, more expensive and has awkward hours, but apparently, Ikebukuro is only 8 minutes away from Shinjuku and 17 minutes away from Akihabara?

Help would be appreciated!

Answer:

Here http://www.seekhotel.net lets you search for availability and prices of hotels in all major travel sites at the same time in the World

How do I get from Tokyo Narita airport to Kuramae Station using trains approved on the JR pass?

Question:

Hi! I will have a Japan Rail pass and wish to use it to travel from Tokyo Narita airport to Kuramae station (on the Oedo line). Can you tell me which trains will get me there on my pass? Thanks a lot!

Answer:

You will not be able to get all the way to Kuramae Station (because that is on a subway line, not JR), but you can get pretty close.
From Narita, once you get your JR Pass validated, take a JR train to Tokyo Station (if you can, take the Narita Express). Then at Tokyo Station get of the train and change to the Yamanote line, and go to Okachimachi. That's as far as you can go with the JR pass.
Exit Okachimachi Station (JR) and go to the Ueno-Okachimachi Station (Oedo line).
Get on the Oedo line there and go to Kuramae which is only two stops away.
Riding the Oedo line from Ueno-Okachimachi to Kuramae will cost you JPY 170.

Japan overstay visa return?

Question:

Seven years ago I stupidly overstayed my visa in Japan by about one month. My only excuse is I was young. I was deported and banned for 5 years. Now I want to go back for a short vacation to see some old friends. I know the ban has expired but I am still a bit nervous about returning because Japanese immigration are strict and they may send me home and the first available flight back because of my past. My question is do you think I will have any problems entry into Japan? And if you have knowledge Japanese immigration laws I would appreciate it if you could answer this question.

Answer:

There is no real answer to your question here. It's better that you ask Japanese Embassy or Consulate for certainty.

Where can i buy the portable dog toilet that ships to Japan?

Question:

http://www.portabledogpotty.com/
like this
all sites ive checked are no international orders : '(

Answer:

Never seen those in Japan. Not saying that they don't have them here, just that I have been in quite a few pet shops and never seen them. I've housebroken my dog so now he just goes to the back door, sits down and waits. If you don't clue in, he barks. This was a messy project.

Then you can do what I do. Buy it and send it to someone you know in the States. They then forward it to you. Something that size? I'll just guess and say 'expensive' so far as shipping costs.

Where can i get free wifi in japan?

How are classes in Japan ordered?

Question:

Im writing a novel set in Japan, and I need to know. I think there are classes A- F and depending on how smart or succesful you are, you are out in each class accordingly. Like if you are an outstanding studnet, straight As and all that, you go to A and if you're a bad student, you go to F. And then depending what year you are in, thats your class. Like first years (10th grade) can be in rooms 1- A, 1- B,etc... but I'm not sure. Can someone clarify? and also, do they really have festivals at the schools, like where they make their own cafe and put on plays, and stuff, and like cherry blossom viewings? Thanks if you can answer

Answer:

Jr. High Grades 1,2,3 (ages 12,13,14 roughly)
Sr. High 1,2,3 (ages 15,16,17 roughly)

Most schools have between 2-4 classes per grade. Unlike in the West, instead of students having a locker, having their own schedule, and going to different classes for different periods, in Japan students have one home room where they have most of their classes, and stay with the same group of students the whole school year. In general, students are not classified by how good of a student they are. Each class will be mixed with students of various levels. Over the school year, it will be apparent that certain classes may be better than other classes, but that's not the intent from the start.

In Japan, there's more of a focus on learning as a group as opposed to catering to good or bad students. Good students won't have the same opportunities as in the West to leave a regular class for an advanced class. Bad students won't have the chance to do a class over again if they basically fail it the first time. They'll just get moved along with everyone else next year to the next level.

Of course you can distinguish yourself as a good student, but you'll still be in the same old class.

The only special classes I've seen have been for people with obvious mental or physical problems, but even those kids sometimes are in the regular classes.

Do schools have festivals? Yes. Sometimes the students will make stalls, and yes, some will make food and you can actually purchase some simple food at a festival.

Plays are put on in schools, just like all over the world. Sometimes they're quite major productions. Not just plays, but other entertainment too. The students put a lot of effort into these. It gets emotional sometimes.

I haven't seen any official cherry blossom viewing at school. People would do that on the weekend with their family.
