Where in Tokyo is the better place to stay?

Question:

I'm going to be staying in Tokyo over Christmas, but this is my first time in Japan, and I want to know the better place to stay to sight-see.

The choices are between Ikebukuro and Asakusa.

The Asakusa hotel is better and cheaper, but I've been told that it can be a little awkward to get to the big places like Shinjuku and Akihabara. The hotel at Ikebukuro isn't as nice, more expensive and has awkward hours, but apparently, Ikebukuro is only 8 minutes away from Shinjuku and 17 minutes away from Akihabara?

Help would be appreciated!
