What's your question?

Will japan be safe in 5 years (nuclear)?

Question:

Answer:

Japan is safe now. There is a 20 km (12 mile) radius around the plant that is off limits as a precaution, but the rest of Japan is fine (other than the areas damaged caused by the tsunami).

If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

And here is where you find current, factual status information:

If i were to go to japan....?

Question:

where would i go to be safe because of the nuclear stuff did the whole japan get hit or just a city plz help

Answer:

Most of Japan is safe and there is no need to worry about traveling to/around the country right now. The only thing, of course, is that you cannot travel within 20 km of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, but most of Japan's major cities are well outside of that ring. Also there may be a little inconveniences here and there as some areas are still conserving energy, but that should not stop you from making the trip. Japan is a wonderful country... I've been there twice and I plan to go again within the year. Besides, Japan can use the tourism dollars right now. :)

Asian boys (Japanese) Don't like black girls?

Question:

Asian boys (Japanese) Don't like black girls?
Alright for of all I am still young so I have my whole life ahead I know this and I am a very diverse person and I still always keep that door open for any individual who loves me for me but I am really interested in the Asian Culture mainly the Traditional Asian Culture Like Japanese History or The Geishas and I really respect the elderly and Traditonal Moral and Educational Vaules I am also open to other cultures at the same time but I wonder would am Asian Guy even like a Black girl like me.

I mean I hear all these negitive things like how Asians only like their own or White and How they do not Find Black girls Attractive Physically I think I mean I am s nerd Average looking I am descried to my friend's as Sweet, Down to Earth, Shy, Quiet and very Nice but something also happen last year this Asian boy(Chinese) that I used to like treated me badly and called me ugly because I wasn't an Asian Girl and I just thought about what his heart was like not his Looks but I just wonder since I would like to move to Japan one day.

And since the Asian culture likes light skin will any Asisb boy like me for me if I go there Will one Like me by the contents of my Heart and not the Color of My Skin Thank You,.

Answer:

I think you will find someone. Do you only like asian FOBS or do you also like asian american guys?

I ask cuz I am white (so not asian) and only date asian guys. I am 21...I am guessing you are younger than me...but I still consider myself rather young as I am a college student..

I know quite a few asian american guys (cute ones too!) who like black girls. I think the only obstacle you may come across if you date one of these guys is that they are more into "ghetto black" culture ^.^ So I guess maybe watch some weird movies or something to pls him haha. :P

I always mention stuff about me that has to do with non-asian cultures so they dont think im obsessed *mwa ha ha* so its basically the same thing I do ^.^

If you are into FOBS...or guys in asia...I am sure you will find one if u stay there long enough...

I think Japan would be your best bet though as...Chinese are rather racist...they love white people though >_< but I mean...they only really like White AMERICANS...they even have swear words for ppl from the south...and the north of china lol.

But...Chinese guys are very sweet to the girl they love...so if you want to find one, I would suggest maybe Hong Kong where there will be more modernized ppl. ^o^

But...Um...I think u should have no problem finding an asian american guy for sure...I think if u MOVE to Japan like you want...I am positive you will find guys though ^o^ Once they get to know you...I think they will love you!

I guess my answer is: dont worry too much. Dont let ppl like that Chinese douchebag get u down ^_____^ Cuz u sound like such a sweet girl and i bet u will find someone. It only takes one person in this world to change you...you only need one person in this world to love you! <3 BTW, u dont sound insecure, but reasonably wondering...so I disagree with the last person >:(

Take care!

Is ite beter to fly from LAX to Haneda airport in Tokyo, or Narita airport?

Question:

I've been reading Hotel reviews on Expedia for Hotels in the Shibuya/Shinjuku area of Tokyo and many were saying to fly into the Narita airport because you can either take the train or airport limousine bus to the hotels and you can only take taxis from Haneda airport. Is that true?

What are the advantages of flying into each? Going to visit in October and so I'm planning now but I'll need to be sure that getting around is not too expensive or far.

Answer:

You can take bus or train from Haneda. I think Haneda is better because it's closer to Tokyo center. But it does not make your trip so much different, no matter which airport you will land.

Answer:

Many Asian guys who grew up in an integrated society do not see color when it comes to choosing with whom they want to date (for example: NYC where I am).

However, Asian guys, whether American citizens or not, still prefer the traditional type of chick: soft-spoken, meek, neat, and gentle. At least that's what I've noticed.

One famous beautiful black woman is currently married to a Japanese guy. That would be Arthel Neville.

Question:

Just wondering if I'd be able to survive on £25k a year ( 3,400,000 YEN) in any decent area in Tokyo?

Staying in japan under 18?

Question:

Hey, i'm 15 and one of my friends has invited me to go over to japan with him. Thing is, i don't want to intrude on his grandma, so i was wondering if it would be legal to stay in a hotel alone, and without my parents. I would have their consent of course. Could they just give permission over the phone? Or what would have to happen? (Would probably be in tokyo, preferably in a budget hotel of some kind.

Answer:

Most (if not all) hotels won't allow youngsters to stay by themselves. Best to stay with your friend assuming you can get consent to travel

Are there any Japanese movies with English language?

Question:

I want to watch a Japanese or Asian movie with English language. Preferably romance.
Please help me out, thanks :)

Answer:

Do you mean English movies about Japan? Or Japanese movies dubbed in English?

"Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005) - (I'm sure everyone saw it)
"Lost in Translation" (2003) - Scarlett Johansson
"My Neighbor Totoro" (1988) - animation
"Spirited Away" (2001) - animation
"Howl's Moving Castle" (2004) - animation

To be honest, there are so many good Japanese movies but I can't think of them being dubbed or not (probably they are). However almost all of them have subtitles. It's worth watching with subtitles too, I think.

日本語の質問: 「よると」? "According to"?

Question:

How do you use 「よると」?
Does this make sense?
「意識調査によると、オーストラリアの学生の34%は学校が嫌いです。」
I want to say "According to the survey, 34% of Australian students think school is bad."

Answer:

The usage of よると is perfect. The whole sentence is perfect too. At the risk of offence, let me say, "Applause!".

Similarities & Differences in the Mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan & India?

Question:

I'm doing an practice DBQ for my AP world history class, but I need help analyzing similarities & differences in the mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan & India in the period from the 1800s to the 1930s.
Thanks. (:

Answer:

A big difference is that Japan is NOT a producer of cotton (an importer) while India has been a top (or the second) producer & exporter.
The period from 1800s to the 1930 seems pretty old... however, early in 1960s, my father had been involved in cotton-importing and he seems to have stayed in Australia for a couple of months to join in planting.

Things that are better about America that Japan doesn't have?

Question:

So my dad has been to Japan but i havent yet. he told me to look for some fun things about the U.S. first that japan doesnt have.i cant think of anything!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE!

Answer:

Good pizza. Cheap movies, and lots of them -- in ENGLISH (LOL). Fun reality TV like Ace of Cakes or those house-buying programs on HGTV. You can go to a shooting range and shoot a gun without a lot of hassle in the US. Travel is a lot cheaper in the US.

That said, there are tons of great things about Japan (sushi! karaoke boxes! fun cartoons! you can shoot arrows from horseback! Sorry, can't think of anything cheaper in Japan).

I think you really have to learn to appreciate where you are first. Then, when you go overseas, you can appreciate the real differentness of the place.

How many Japanese AV stars have died from unnatural causes and who were they?

Question:

I know of one who was pregnant doing a AV movie while pregnant and died of heart distress.

Many American AV stars die from murder, suicide, drugs, HIV etc what about Japan's?

Or is Japanese AV safer for its stars.....

Answer:

Momoi Nozomi was murdered. I think one of the big issues here is these people are in a milieu where shabu is used. Therefore better drug treatment or harm reduction programs would be helpful. It would be interesting to see who dies younger-pro wrestlers or porn stars?

What to expect in Niigata station? help!?

Question:

Hi, I plan to Niigata station through limited Inaho. From the platform, I must then locate Toyoko Inn which is near the Bandai East Exit. My worry is that, will there be direction in English just like those stations in Tokyo??

I'm really worried to the point that I want to cancel my trip but then I've invested so much money on this....

please help??

Answer:

No need to worry.

I think I recall seeing signs in English for both the exit and the inn (the inn is connected to the station so no need for a cab!) but if i am mistaken your other (and maybe better option) is to walk up to agent at the station (where you present your ticket as you exit the gate) and ask for them to point out where the Bandai East Exit (say something like: "sumimasen, bandai higashi deguchi doko deska?"). Whatever he says, repeat it to confirm and head in that direction

You could also ask whether the Toyoko Inn is close by (something like: "Toyoko Inn Niigata ekimae doko desuka?")

Use of 'Wa' in Japanese?

Question:

I know that 'Wa' is a topic marker, showing the topic of a sentence. Eg. Watashi wa Bob desu. But in all the examples I've seen the topic is always 'I'. I also know that the 'wa' can be left out is the topic is clear, but is it possible to have a topic which isn't I.
For example, 'You are late' Would you be a topic or a subject, and in what case could the topic be another noun or pronoun. Eg. 'Japan is great' Is Japan then a topic, not a subject.

Help is appreciated

Answer:

It's not so easy to read the question with no "?" marks.....

- "is it possible to have a topic which isn't 'I'?"
YES, for example, 'You are late' we often say "osokatta ne"
--> like when the subject kept his/her friend waiting. "anata osokattane" sounds like blaming.
Or a strict teacher would say "kimi chikoku da!" ('you' as a subject)

- in what case could the topic be another noun or pronoun?"
Eg. 'Japan is great' Is Japan then a topic, not a subject?
--> I would say 'Japan' is both a subject and a topic

note: we are taught that "the subject" in a sentence is always connected to a main verb.
Complicated enough, we also say "nihontte sugoi!" (Japan is great) without using "wa". But if you find this too confusing, pls just ignore this time.

Japanese sentence structure?

Question:

I've just began studying Japanese and what I've picking up so far is that the Japanese language appears to be 'missing' many words which in English, we would consider fundamental. Mainly the fact that they don't have words for is, it, a, the and plurals.
I know they have 'topic markers' and 'subject markers' and other particles like them, but I'm very confused by the sheer dissimilarity between Japanese and English.

For example, if you were to say, (and sorry I don't know where my Hiragana keyboard is??) that cat is cute. Would it be, sono neko ga kawaii, that cat cute?

Or I ran to school, (I don't have enough vocab to even attempt this) I school ran?

Or It was boring, would you just say 'Tsumaranai' because couldn't that also be it is boring?

Also Japanese people supposedly don't use pronouns such as I or you, once to topic of a conversation is established. But does that mean if half way through a conversation I wanted to say "Would you like to go shopping with me?" Would I end up saying 'would like go shopping???'
As you can see I am extremely confused and have a VERY limited (ie. non existent) vocabulary, and although I know both hiragana and katakana, I would probably find an answer easier to understand in just romaji.
Help would be really appreciated.

Answer:

japanese actually has an it is word which is desu pronounced des. my japanese is a bit rusty but i think your sentence would be something along the lines of sono neko kawaii desu
