How popular are Indian restaurants in Tokyo, do they sell vegetarian food?

Question:

How much should I expect to pay for a dinner for two?

Answer:

Foreign restaurants like Indian are in major cities in Japan and do offer nice tasty dishes. For me, the best veggie dishes are the Indian ones. If you can track down an Indian restaurant, you will have a nice time. If you can afford to, take a trip to India and enjoy authentic Indian food found no where else.

Are earthquakes in tokyo really bad?

Question:

i wanna no cuz ive always wanted to go to tokyo (even move there when im older) but everybody tells me earthquakes there are horible. Is that true? and how many time a month/year do they have earthquakes?

Answer:

NO, for short.

Usually a lot of smaller earthquakes occur after a huge earthquake.
In Tokyo, I have felt some quakes after 3.11.
You can see the history of them from this site:
http://typhoon.yahoo.co.jp/weather/jp/ea…

But about 30 million people are living around Tokyo.
And after 3.11, I've never heard any damages caused by quakes.

What is the japanese of "present"?

Question:

Answer:

good lord. "Present" can be an adjective, verb, or noun.

present adj.: He is present in class. (出席している) shusseki shite iru.

present v. : present a (prize) ご褒美を(贈呈)する zoutei suru.

present n.: プレゼント purezento --- like a christmas present. That's the easiest one to use if you are talking about a gift/present.

And there are many other uses of "present" in English but probably one of these three right?

And Google Translate is like asking a monkey to do your taxes---it doesn't add up. Don't use it without someone who can proofread it. (by proofread, I mean change everything it says and start again from scratch.)

Advice about living near Shinjuku/Shibuya?

Question:

I want to live near Shinjuku or Shibuya in Tokyo and be close to the most youthful parts of Tokyo. Would I still be able to experience this if I live somewhere on the Yamanote line (i.e. Ikebukuro, Ebisu)? I'm also very interested in any artsy districts (i.e. cafes, Apple stores, modern art museums)

Also, I was thinking to rent a live-work loft or a studio apartment on the Yamanote line... Gaba says they will pay me ¥250,000. Do you have any links to find lofts/studios around that rate?

If you just answer part of the question that's ok.

Answer:

It's unrealistic to live in Shibuya or Shinjuku only with 250,000 yen salary. You have to pay taxes and others so your actual disposable income will be like 210,000 yen.

And it will cost you 100,000 yen even for a small studio in Shibuya or Shinjuku. You wouldn't have much money to spend on other things.

>Would I still be able to experience this if I live somewhere on the Yamanote line (i.e. Ikebukuro, Ebisu)?

You can easily go to other places as Tokyo has extensive train network. I think Sugamo or Komagome are cheaper places on Yamanote line.

How is it like being black in japan?

Question:

I want to go to japan when i get older. I was planing to go to college their but i dont know when japan will recover from the earthquake and sunami. hopefully it wont take a long time. Anyway ive heard that people have many expierence in japan and some are nice and some are not. I actually plan to live their after i learn more things while im college. I was just hoping some one could tell me how its like. and please be as detailed as you want. dont leave any rude comments please. thanks

Answer:

1. For college, you'll probably need financial aid. At least your parents will appreciate it if you got some. So look for scholarship opportunities. As a black female (are you a black female?) There are lots of scholarships available in the USA. At least some of them have to be for overseas study.

I would recommend doing your freshman year of college in the USA (you're too young to drink anyway in Japan until you're twenty), and then in your second year, move on to Japan. But the credits don't transfer usually.

Check out Temple University, and the several other Universities that have campuses in Japan.

Or do grad school, or go to a language school after you graduate from University in the USA. Many choices.
I know many black folks living in Japan, from the USA, UK, Jamaica,South Africa, Haiti, and Africa. You will hear that there are so many Africans in Tokyo/other big cities, that people tend to think all blacks are Africans. Africans are known for their dubious employment and their tendency to say they are "American" while speaking Nigerian pidgin English that no one understands.
JET hires from all over the English speaking world, which is how I met South Africans (black and white), and a Jamaican English teacher. But of course most black English teachers are from the USA.
You know how it is. Old people tend to be intimidated. Young women (high school girls,) if you are female will talk about your body. (they do this with white girls too.) Since Japanese kids rarely see blacks or whites in rural areas, if you live there, you will hear it. "Her skin is the color of chocolate!" or to me "His nose is huge! He looks like Pinnochio!" or commenting on a girl's breast size (other girls and even grown women do this.)---However this kind of stuff is considered rude by most Japanese so it's usually kids who say something. And it's not the "I hate you" type of racism, it's more like "Wow...Look at it! " like you are an object at a zoo.

Blacks in Japan have told me they cannot stand to hear whites in Japan talk about "racism" because even today, and definitely 50 years ago, blacks had it much, much worse in the USA than they would have had in Japan.

You have to understand that us whites from the USA have never been a minority (well, some of us) so it is our first time being the only white guy on the train, and have people look at us. Some white people get really, really angry about this. But some blacks say "Hey it's better than Arkansas." so I guess I can understand that.

Will my debit card work in Japan?

Question:

I recently got a new debit mastercard, but it doesn't have a cirrus logo on the back like my old one did. Where the cirrus logo was now just has the mastercard logo. Will it still work in Japanese 7/11 atms?

Answer:

Yes it will work but next time please ask your bank and not us as they are in a better position to advice you. Also inform them of your travels i.e. when you will be in and out so that they don't block your card if you decide to use it (thinking it is fraudulent). While you are at it, have a look at prepaid Visa, MasterCard's etc for use in Japan as they have cheaper rates than current debit and credit cards

Is safe to travel to Japan?

Question:

we are planning on having our honeymoon in Japan on March 2012. Im concerned about the radiation after I read this
http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/japan-widens-ban-on-radioactive-beef-to-miyagi

Answer:

99%+ of Japan is safe. The only danger zone there is about a 20 km radius around the Fukushima nuke plant.
The problem with the beef is some cows were fed contaminated hay. That beef is being recalled and destroyed.
What you're talking about is 8 months away. No one can tell you hoe things will be at that time.

Question:

I seriously have no idea where else I could ask this question, so I'll ask it here.

What light novels would you recommend? Especially those similar to No.6, I like its conversations. I'm talking about the original Japanese works, of course. Please don't recommend Murakami, he's not a light novelist, plus I'm looking for something in the same league like books I've listed below.

Light novels I've already read/am reading now:
Durarara!!
Baccano!
Kami-sama no Memochou
No.6 (especially like this one)
Mawari no Penguin Drum (love it)
Shinrei Tantei Yakumo
Ouda Hideo's works (In the Pool, Kuchuu Buranko)
Bakemonogatari
Gosick
Spice & Wolf

Answer:

The followings are so-called light novelists:

新井素子 Motoko Arai
氷室冴子 Saeko Himuro
中里融司 Yuuji Nakazato
乙一 Otsuichi
桜庭一樹 Kazuki Sakuraba
*宮部みゆき Miyuki Miyabe

I've read only * Miyuki Miyabe.

Little Jumping Spiders?

Question:

Since the weather has turned warm and its started to rain often I've been finding these small black and light brown spiders that instead of crawling they mostly jump from one spot to the other. . .they aren't very big but they aren't tiny either and they are kindof compact (legs aren't spread out far from its body)

they really freak me out to no end. . .so i'd like to more about them. . .I come from Dover, Delaware in the US and I've never seen a spider jump or even one bigger than the width of a toothbrush.

Have you found them in your place? what kind of spider is it? anything else?

Answer:

Yes actually I have.

I live in Wisconsin and one day while picking up my little brothers room i found two. They were brown, "compact" as you say, and they jumped.

I think it might be the "Phidippus audax"
It's the most common household jumping spider.
Pic
http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Phidippus…
Obviously an extreme close up

"Jumping spiders commonly reside near doorjambs and windowsills."

Wikipedia says "The average size of adults ranges from roughly 13 to 20 mm in length."
That sounds about the size of the ones I found in my brothers room.

I also found this "This species is common in southeastern Canada, most of the United States and parts of northern Central America, and has been introduced to Hawaii and the Nicobar Islands."

Hope this helped and that's the spider your talking about (:

What does japan look like now?

Question:

Any recent Pictures after all the earthquakes and everything? I really wanna see how it looks over there.

Answer:

We've been there last April (a month after the earthquake) to visit my dad, we've never mind whatever danger we will face because we love the country. I'm a Filipino and I have been amazed on what their country is, it still looks the same when we've been there for the last two years.. There are no signs of panicking, the country is still beautiful and organized and the people are still happy, hospitable and polite(for me Japanese people are the most hospitable and politest people here on earth). It's really different to my country. But I don't know, we've never been to Fukushima, we only stayed at Tokyo.. It's really fun there and I hope I will be there again because my dad is back to sea for his work.. :D
