What are the fruit and vegetable seasons like in Japan?

Question:

Hi all, I moved to Japan a little over a week ago and was wondering what the seasons for fruit and veg are like here. Are they always the same in the northern hemisphere?

I like to eat things in season, but the grocery stores don't give me any clue as everything is priced quite higher than what I'm used to! :P

Thanks!
(P.S. Central Japan)

Answer:

mmmm, not sure what "central" means in this case. As you know, fruit and veggies range from Hawaiian-like in Okinawa to Minnesota-like in Hokkaido. Also, the altitude you are at makes a difference.

In general, though, I think spinach, broccoli, and asparagus would be all in season in most of Japan. (Up here in Hokkaido, the asparagus is just peeping out of the soil.) Storage crops, such as gobo, carrots, potatoes, onions, etc. are also available, but not at their best because they are probably sprouting.

Ask around and see if you can find a farmer's market for the best stuff!

Meaning of 探せよう vs 探そう?

Question:

Literally, I'd like to translate 探せよう as "let's be able to search for..." and 探そう as "let's search for" but the former translation doesn't quite make as much sense to me. Can someone explain the slight difference between the two?

Is the difference in meaning the same for other verb pairs, like 食べられよう/食べよう、言えよう/言おう、etc…

Also what would 探されよう mean and how would that differ from 探せよう?

よろしくお願いします。

Answer:

how about using "to find" 見つける/見つけようMitsukeyou instead of 探せよう sagaseyou.
because it doesn't make sense if you try to say ”Lets be able to search for” with 探す

hope it makes sense.

What are the most common problems you can encounter in Japan?

Question:

I'll be going to japan next month, and work there as an I.T. for 3 years. I'll be staying in Yokohama, but i was just wondering.

Answer:

Hi! I currently live in Japan and will tell you that, as others have said, the culture is probably the biggest thing. Learn what is considered improper, etc. The Japanese don't have the same gestures as Europeans and/or Americans. Keep practicing Japanese, too.

Also, get yourself a color-coded train map. You will need this! The trains are the best way to get around sometimes, but you often have to jump to several different ones to get to where you are going.

Do you plan to get a driving license while here? This isn't too difficult, but unless you are from England or Australia, you might need to find somewhere to practice driving on the left side of the road, using the turn signals, and making right turns.

Good luck to you - Japan is beautiful and the food is amazing (especially the curry!).

What's the nicest place to go to in Japan?

Question:

i'm going to work in Japan for 3 years in Yokohama. Are there any nice place you can recommend me going to?

Answer:

In Yokohama check out the futuristic Minato Mirai 21 harbourtown, Yokohama Marine Town, Chinatown and Yokohama Marine Tower (横浜マリンタワー ).

My two favourite places in Japan are Kyoto and Takayama.

Kyoto is one of the must see cities in Japan. It offers the full traditional Japanese cultural experience. Kyoto is renowned for its abundance of delicious Japanese food & cuisine and historical importance.

The highlights of Kyoto include Kiyomizu-dera, a magnificent wooden temple, Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion, Heian Jingu, Nijo-jo, castle of the first Tokugawa shogun, and Gion, famous entertainment and geisha district.

Takayama (高山市) is a city located in Gifu, Japan. It is a small beautiful city known for its traditional architecture and crafts. Takayama lies in the ancient Hida district tucked away between the mountains of the Japan Alps. It is a great place to spend a few days or to use as a base to visit the mountains or surrounding onsen hot springs.

Ex-Husband moved back to Japan. How to claim child-support?

Question:

My Ex-Husband has taken a job in his home country (Japan) and now refuses to pay child support. He doe not work at a U.S company or have any association with the U.S any longer. We have been divorced 1 year and I didn't even know he was moving back to his country, but last week I tried calling his home but his phone was dissconnected. I called his friend and he told me that he moved abroad and wanted no association with me or our daughter any more. His friend refued to give me his number abroad. I had called since his last child supprt check didnt come in. -- I have a low paying job and will struggle greatly without this payment. What can I do??

Answer:

According to what I've read online, it seems that you will not be able to claim child-support if the ex-husband is unwilling to pay.

"LAWS: In Japan, there are certain regulations governing child support law. The custodial parent, or the parent with custody of the child, must ask the courts for child support payments from the non-custodial parent, in which case the request will usually be granted. Specific child support payments vary according to income of parents and the specific needs of the child. Usually, the amount is left up to the parents to decide, but if they cannot come to a decision, then this matter also goes to family court, where the court will determine a fair payment."

"EFFECTIVENESS: Because Japan has no method devoted to ensuring that court-ordered child support payments are collected, many question the effectiveness of Japanese child support laws. In fact, some evidence suggests that absent fathers and lack of adequate child support is Japan’s third-leading cause of child poverty. And, even where child support payments are made, they are traditionally very low and still may be inadequate in ensuring a comfortable life for children receiving support payments."

"OPTIONS FOR CUSTODIAL PARENTS: A custodial parent forced to contend with a non-custodial parent who refuses to pay child support does have legal options. In many cases, the amount to be paid for child support is agreed upon by both parties and should be drawn up in a contract if possible. If the non-custodial parent then refuses to pay the amount agreed upon, the custodial parent may take him to court. However, this is often a very lengthy and expensive process, and even if she wins, the non-custodial parent is only responsible to pay up to one quarter of the agreed upon amount.

CONTROVERSY: Because of the traditionally inadequate payment amounts and because of the lack of effectiveness in enforcing court-ordered child support payments, many have called for reform of Japanese child support laws and regulations. These calls are particularly common among U.S. government officials dealing with divorces and child support payments between U.S. and Japanese citizens."

Imigritation problem in Japan ?

Question:

Hi
I have a questions for you I hope some one can answer me !
I want is work legal in Japan.
That my dream live there.

I'm US citizen, 27 years old, simgle never married. I have a degree college of digital electronic but I didn't work in that field.
Clean criminal background record.
1th Job Experience in maintaince floor in malls, residential buildings and office, .janitorial and utility. For 6 years.
2th Job experience working 2 years in restaurant 5 diamond and 3 diamond in Las Vegas MGM Grand Resort and Hotel.

I speak English ( is not my strong language ), Spanish native lenguge, some French and Japanese little bit.

If you have any idea please I am open to any idea please I want is live in Japan that all I want.

Help me toy dream come a reality thanks for your help :)

Have a good day.

Answer:

You will find that it will be very difficult to get a job in Japan with your current background. I believe the largest hinderence will be your lack of Japanese lanaguge skills. Often they require fluency in Japanese. How ever if you don't mind changing gears and teaching English instead you could probably get a job doing that. After a few years of English teaching maybe you'll pick up some leads to a career closer to what you want to be doing.

Good luck :)

(P.S. Have you been to Japan before? If not you may wish to take a visit first as there are many misconceptions.)

EDIT: If your English isn't strong enough to be an English teacher perhaps look into being a Spanish teacher, there is SOME interest in Spanish over there as well although not nearly as strong as English.

What is the CHEAPEST mode of train travel from Narita Airport (Terminal 2) to Haneda Airport (Terminal I)?

Question:

I am supposed to arrive at Narita Airport Terminal 2 at 2:30 AM and my flight at Haneda Airport (Terminal 1) is at 6:25 AM on the same day. What are cheap and quick/reliable ways to get from Narita Airport terminal 2 to Haneda Terminal 1 so ...I don't miss my flight?

please be specific as I have never been to Japan. Thanks in advance!

I

Answer:

I don't think there is a flight which arrives at Narita at 2:30am.

And there is no transportation except taxi between 2-6am.

Check your schedule again.

Addition:
As another says, Narita can't use its runway at 2:30am. I think there is anything wrong in your schedule. Anyway, the only transportation is taxi at that time.

Has japan generally had good leaders?

Question:

and i mean from waaay back, throughout all its history, shoguns to emperors to prime ministers, have things been pretty good and stable? why? also are there any particularly great/important people?

On the whole, Japan is blessed to have many good leaders throughout its history.

For those whining about Japanese leadership, maybe you can just take a look across ocean and look at China for a good example (of bad leadership).

Who is the Japanese artist Ay-O?

Question:

Answer:

Ay-O (靉嘔 Aiō?, Takao Iijima, 1931–) is a Japanese artist, who has been associated with Fluxus since its international beginnings in the 1960s. Ay-O has established a reputation in the avant gardes of Japan, Europe and the United States. In Japan, he is known as the "Rainbow Man" for his use of colorful, rainbow-striped motifs in his artwork. In its purest form some paintings are simple gradations of the Rainbow with up to 192 gradations. Ay-O was introduced to George Maciunas by Yoko Ono in 1961 and formally joined Maciunas in Fluxus in 1963. Ay-O was known for his Finger Boxes and for his performance events when he was active in Fluxus. He worked closely with fellow Fluxus artists Maciunas, Emmett Williams, Dick Higgins and Nam June Paik.

Ay-O represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1966 and at the São Paulo Biennale in 1971. He also built the famed "Tactile Rainbow" at the Osaka World's Fair in 1970. In 1971 true to his Demokato debut he adapted 10 American Naive paintings and created a rainbow version that he called Nashville Skyline. In 1987 he did a series of Rainbow Happenings, with Rainbow Happening #17 being a 300m Rainbow Eiffel Tower project in Paris.

The Finger Boxes are works of art by Ay-O that are the most tactile works of art in the Fluxus project. Ay-O first produced them in 1964. There are rumors that they were invented before WWII, however this is unconfirmed. It is said that all of the original Finger Boxes were destroyed during the fighting. Ay-O is said to have learned of this claim it for himself. The artworks comprise largely identical hollow cubical wooden boxes with finger-sized holes in one face. As tactile works of art, it is necessary to touch them to perceive them, by placing one's finger into the hole to feel the material that is hidden within the box. The hidden contents of the boxes comprise such various things as beads, bristle brushes, hair, cotton balls, nails, and sponges.

The artist's intent, by including things such as nails, which can potentially prick the finger, in the possible contents of the box is to ensure that the user touches the box with an "enquiring, learning gesture". The finger boxes are also intended to be touched by multiple people at a time, promoting a shared, social, experience of perceiving the work.

Differences between Japan and Egpyt?

Question:

I'm doing an assignment and I have to compare differences between Japan and Egypt and at the end of the assignment I have to decide which country would be better to set up a business in.
So I'd like to know about:
- Advertising differences
- Cultural differences
- Language differences (what languages they speak most commonly)
- Climate differences
- Technology differences
and ANY other differences that you can think of.
Please help!

Answer:

The differences are obvious.

Culture wise - go to wikipedia. Japan is buddhist-shinto while Egypt is Islam.
Language - we speak japanese, they speak arabic.
climate - it's colder here and warmer in Egypt.
technology - we're far way more advance than them. Egypt relies more in oil than in technology development.

I want to move to Japan?

Question:

こんにちは! I'm 16 years old, and I want to do somethin' that may sound a little crazy. I want to move to Japan. I've been doing my best to learn Japanese, I've gotten Hiragana and Katakana down and I'm in the process of learning Kanji. I am NOT wanting to go to Japan because of anime or manga, I want to go because I am interested in it's history and culture. I am planning on going to college before I move to Japan.

My questions now are: What am I going to need to do? and: what should I expect?

(Also, I didn't just copy and paste the symbols for "Kon'nichiwa"...)

Answer:

You usually need working or student visa to live in Japan.

For working visa, you have to get a job offer from a Japanese company. But you can't look for a job in Japan without a visa. So you need it before you enter Japan.

For student visa, you have to be admitted to a Japanese college. You need to pay tuition and living cost for 4 years. It could be about $80,000.

If you want to become a Japanese citizen, you have to keep living in Japan for more than 5 years without a pause. Then, you will be eligible to apply for citizenship. But you need more like stable income, sufficient reason, Japanese language skill and so on if you want your application to be accepted.

You can apply for Permanent Residence of Japan under the same condition. And this is relatively easier than citizenship.

Is it ok to move to japan, without speaking japanese?

Question:

Answer:

There isn't any gov't requirement to speak Japanese before moving here, if that's what you mean. But, I strongly recommend it. It's extremely stressful not being able to understand what is going on around you.

Of course, if you move here on a student visa, then you don't need to speak it at first (-:. You'll pick it up just fine. If you move here on a work visa, try to arrange for some classes.

I know a lot of people who claim they don't speak Japanese after living here for ages, but usually, it's a case of them picking up Japanese modesty. They don't speak perfectly, but after a year here, you should pick up quite a bit if you make an effort.

4 hour layover in Narita Airport, is this enough time to explore?

Question:

I'll be flying to Seoul in July and have 4 hours to kill and would like to do some exploring.

If it is enough time, what needs to be done to be able to leave the airport and come back?
What can I do with my carry on luggage?
What fees are there if I leave the airport and how much will transportation in the city cost?
I'm traveling alone, will it be safe to explore in Narita by myself (i'm female)?
Any recommendations of what to do?
Is there WiFi in Narita? Hows the availability and whats the cost?

Exploring Narita is far more appealing than trying to kill time in an airport.

Answer:

It's not enough time if you mean only four hours between flights. Remember you have go through security just to enter Narita terminal and Japan has exit controls. It all takes time. By the time you got to Narita city station you would have to turn around and go back. That being said, there is a place where you can store your things at the airport, and Narita temple and its museum are worth a visit.

What is the Miura fold and rigid origami?

Question:

Answer:

Rigid origami:
Is a branch of origami which is concerned with folding structures using flat rigid sheets joined by hinges. It is a part of the study of the mathematics of paper folding, it can be considered as a type of mechanical linkage, and has great practical utility. For instance it was used in the construction of large solar panel arrays that have to be folded before deployment. There is no requirement that the structure start as a flat sheet — for instance shopping bags with flat bottoms and airbags are studied as part of rigid origami.

The Miura fold
Is a rigid fold that has been used to simulate large solar panel arrays for space satellites in the Japanese 1995 Space Flight Unit. It was invented by Japanese astrophysicist Koryo Miura. It is an example of the practical importance of rigid origami, or treating hinges and rigid surfaces like the paper and creases in paper folding problems.

A folded Miura fold can be packed into an area no larger than the size of one of the segments that make up the overall shape, its thickness restricted only by the thickness of the folded material.

The fold can also be unpacked in just one motion by pulling on opposite ends of the folded material, and likewise folded again by pushing the two ends back together. This was beneficial to the aforementioned solar array as it reduced the number of motors required to unfold it, reducing the overall weight and complexity of the mechanism.

The first pic from the top: http://research.ua.edu/2007/05/a-song-fr…

Answer:

Yes, it is the gyoshotai or 'semi-cursive' style. It is the style that people generally use when writing. If you study Japanese calligraphy, that will be included together with kaisho (regular), sosho (cursive) and kana

If you are interested there is an online calligraphy dictionary which show all three styles for each character.

Are Japanese cell phones locked to carriers?

What's a good computer to get?

Question:

I live in Japan and I think it's time for me to get a new computer. I've thought about ordering one from the U.S. and having it shipped but wanted to see what computers were available here. I'd like a relatively high-end computer. Fast, good graphics, and good for playing new games. It doesn't need to have an English OS and while I would like a laptop, I won't say no to a desktop. So any ideas about the brand, the type, and where I can buy it?

Thank you.

Answer:

If I remember correctly computers are a bit expensive in Japan so the US shipping option might be best for you. I strongly suggest a desktop if you want a high end gaming computer though. Laptops are best for light/medium gaming unless you want to shell out a couple thousand.

For gaming, go with Windows 7 and not a Mac OS.
For brand, I prefer Toshiba and Asus but most computers brands will be pretty similar.
Anything around $1000 will get you a medium/high gaming rig and $2000 should get you what you need to play anything currently on the market at max settings.

Check websites like Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com for pre-built systems. Those places will give you decent prices.

How are you doing in Japan? ?

Question:

I hope everyone in Japan are okay! Are you guys still drinking bottle water? I know half of the people in Japan are either missing or dead. So let's pray that there won't be another natural disaster hitting your way...

Answer:

We all appreciate the concern, but let's get your facts right, ok?
Yes, a lot of people are unfortunately dead or missing, but it's not even close to half the population.

People of the disaster area are doing better, but they are still suffering from crowded shelters, not enough medicine, and short food supply. Progress is being made, but they could still use everyone's contributions.

I am still donating money to the Japanese Red Cross and hoping for a speedy recovery. I suggest that you and anyone who cares even a bit donate to the Japanese Red Cross as well. But be careful not to donate to any other Red Cross, because by the time that money goes to Japan, only about half of what you donated will get sent.

Is public sex acceptable in japan?

Question:

I have seen a few videos where Japanese girls are forced to have sex with random men, mostly on a subway train or city-bus.. Is that for real ? Looking for a mall near Fussa to do some shopping. Does this mall have women's clothing stores? I'm small so the lack of large sizes does not bother me.

Thanks!

I used to work there. It has lots of women's clothes and is fairly cheap.

I think the train ride into Tachikawa city is more fun for shopping if you want more of a day out/choice.

Anyway... Mizuho Mall is good.

Fingerprinting in Japan.?

Question:

In 1952 everyone had to be fingerprinted in Japan. In 1991 all except for special permanent residents (Zainichi Koreans). In 1999 all aliens didn't have to be fingerprinted.

And then in 2007 all foreigners coming to the country had to be fingerprinted.

Is this right?

Answer:

@Watanebe shingo is correct. ( Hope I've got the name right ) Fingerprints and Photographs are required to be taken prior to entering Japan.
The data collected is verified internationally, If you have a criminal record in your home country then you are more likely than not to be refused entry
I myself have no objection to these procedures, although no doubt you will have the human rights brigade screaming obscenities about the fact.
