What could ¥1,260 buy?

Question:

I'm from America, and I love Japan. I currently have 1,260 Yen here with me, and I was curious as to what that can buy in Japan. According to Google, it is equal to about $15.00 in American currency, however that might just be what it's worth in America, and not Japan. If anyone can please tell me what it could buy, then I might have a better idea of Yen in Japan. THANKS! ^_^

Answer:

You can buy 120 うまい棒.

If you are military stationed in japan?

Question:

and are going to take leave going back state side do you need a passport if your connecting flight is in china?

Answer:

This is not the place to ask your question. What are you going to do if you DON'T have a passport and actually need one, say something like, "Well, they told me on Yahoo!Answers that I didn't need one!" and then everything will be cool?

How about this? Try someone who really knows the answer to that question. Like a superior on your base who can at least point you to the proper person to ask.

How long do you need a passport to go to Japan if your a US citizen?

I am going to potentially take a trip to Japan at the end of the year. I do not have a passport yet but I am going to apply for one next month. How long must I have the passport in order to be allowed in Japan? I know a lot of Asian countries require 6 months so I am just making sure before preparing travel.

Answer:

You can visit Japan as soon as you get your passport.

If you like, pleses tell me what you want to do.

Answer:

Many North Americans are interested in anme, but this has nothing to do with culture.

Personally I like the Japanese culture and heritage such as the Edo and Samurai periods.

I have been to Japan 6 times, and the only Japanese clothes I will ever buy are t-shirts with
the logo of, or unique heritage site in the city I visited. All of these souvenir clothes are now made in China(just
check the label).

Where in japan are there "english speaking areas"?

Question:

i mean like if u go to japan and do not speak much japenese, is there an area where people can speak engish if you do not know the language. (that have public places like hotels, resteraunts, taxis etc.)

Answer:

I wouldn't say there's such a thing as an English-speaking area, but there are places and situations where people are more likely to speak good English. For example, hotels that cater to tourists tend to have some English-speaking staff (but they may not be totally fluent and may not work every shift). Some restaurants have English menus, but not all (they often have picture menus though). I have yet to run into a taxi where I could use English. Street signs and signs in train stations are typically bilingual. If you want to go to Japan, it's best to learn some Japanese. You can get buy without any Japanese, especially in larger cities like Tokyo, but attempting to learn and use even a little bit of the local language is just polite.

How safe will tokyo and osaka japan be in one to two years?

Question:

I was going to be an exgange student in my second or third year in high school but now I'm not so sure, if it's not going to be safe, but depending on how bad it is I will or will not go because I have wanted to go to Japan almost my whole life.

Answer:

They are as safe as they were two years ago. If you're talking about radiation , that was never a problem. The problem area is close to the nuke plants in fukushima, some 150 miles from Tokyo, and even farther from Osaka.

Is it true that in Tokyo if you are doing more that 80mph the cops wont even try and pull you over?

Question:

What speed do you have to reach on Tokyo so that the cops wont even try and pull you over

Answer:

Never been to Tokyo, have you ? In much of Tokyo you can't even go that fast. Streets are crowded and narrow. Many are not straight enough to get up to that speed.
No, it's not true. There's also traffic cameras to deal with.

Does anyone remember a couple jumping off building in Japan in 2000? (Warning: a little gruesome)?

Question:

My sister was learning Japanese at Waseda and I went to visit her. We were shopping one day in a busy shopping area (I don't know if it was Shinjuku or not), and we encountered this large group of people gathered around something. Curious, we made our way to the front and to our horror there was a young man and a young woman, blood on the ground, the woman on a stretcher with a sheet over her (obviously dead), and the man was writhing on his stretcher.

I left Japan soon. And when I asked my sister she never checked the papers.
I had always been wondering about them, what their story was. Does anyone have any information on that? Thanks in advance.

Answer:

I'm sorry. I tried searching 飛び降り自殺事件 東京 2000年 in google and there was just to many different reports. It's difficult to find these kind of information if you don't have names of victims or the building.

What is life like in Tokyo, Japan for an American?

Question:

I am in the active army and might be stationed about 45 minutes outside of Tokyo. What would life be like in Tokyo for an American Soldier? Thanks.

Answer:

. Things may change if you're in or out of uniform. Some Japanese have a problem with American military-men. It's due to them committing crimes & causing problems in bars / clubs.
It will be what you make it. If you show respect for the people you come into contact with, you shouldn't have any problems.

Something a foreigner would think is weird in Japan?

Question:

Hi there!

I'm wondering, what are some big differences between Japan and the western (like Europe and America.) I read somewhere that Japanese people don't have a general practitioner, but that they go straight to the hospital. (general practitioner = is doctor where you go to and he decides if you have to go to the hospital or whatever.) This is something I think is pretty weird...

Anyway.. is there other stuff? Tell me about it! Doesn't matter what it is. Maybe you could tell me your own experiences when you moved to Japan/Tokyo. Or when you're Japanese you could tell me some interesting stuff. Or maybe you never visited japan but you just know stuff.

Please Tell Me!!

Thanks!

Answer:

The definition of weird is something that is: "Very strange; bizarre"

I don't think not having a general practitioner is very strange/bizzare or even weird in the United States.

It depends on where you live, even in places in America many people don't have general practitioners and go direct to the hospital or clinic, especially true in the big major cities. The same applies to Japan, it depends on where you are, some people always go to the same doctor their family has always gone and do not go strait to the hospital. Of course if it is an emergency you go strait to the hospital. Honestly I don't think this is something weird about the Japanese, and I come from the US.

It is really difficult because it depends on the "westerner's" cultural background. Someone who is exposed to more culture and international people (say living in a major city like New York City) might not find things to be as weird as someone who say lived on a farm in North Dakota.

Even in "Western societies" mix match, Americans don't exactly match Europeans either. For example, extreme violence is common on American TV but you can't show nudity. So in America it is ok to show people getting shot, but showing boobs is bad. This is in contrast to places in Europe, where nudity is shown more on TV but extreme violence is not so.

The road to a middle school in Tokyo?

Question:

Hi There,

In my book a girl takes her bicycle to drive to school.
And yeah before you are gonna say: that isn't logical, japanese people walk to school! You need to know that this girl is from The Netherlands. And there it's very common to drive a bike to school. So she does it there too.

Anyway now I have a question. How is it to drive a bicycle to school in Tokyo? Are the streets very busy? Is there something like a bicycle path? And how does the road look like. What do you pass? What do you see on the streets? (think of: stores etc.)

I just can't get a good impression of the way the streets look around there. I know Tokyo is big and that there isn't something like a common road.. but just try to describe it. Or just describe your own road or something. Anything that will help, add it! Cuz I desperately need it.. When I tick it in on Google all I get are those gigantic neon lights and big buildings.

Thanks!

Answer:

yeah, Especially in Tokyo, More people Walk or Bike Then anything. (when i say walk, this includes using the subway) Some streets you can see 1,000 Bikes parked in a row on the sidewalk, Some times underneath a bridge will be Bike parking for like 2 bucks.

They do use WHAT EVER space is available, In some places in Tokyo, People would Take up the Entire street for....well for ever. during the day there are always crowds of people, in some places when a car came, we had to Hug each other on each side so 1 car could Creep down the middle past the crowd. don't Move your foot or you will get ran over! Then we would just pour back into the street! was very strange actually....This isn't like a Constant occurrence, i was there for a week and it happened a handful of times. If you want to Add me on Facebook dude, I have some Pictures and and short videos of hard to find stuff. like i have a short video of me and my buddy just walking down the street looking around at everything that was going on! Late registered birth certificate for filipinos needs form-137 on applying visa to Japan?

Question:

I am inviting my cousin to Visit me in Japan, but since her birth certificate is late registered, the Embassy of Japan in Philippines is asking a form-137 and a baptismal. She got her Form-137 already at the local school but then when she applied for a visa, it was denied. They did not say anything on why she was denied, which is dumb because how would we now what went wrong then? So I called the Japanese consulate in Philippines to ask what went wrong with her visa, but they don't say anything. The person I spoke to gives me a hint that one of the documents is fake, and he was giving me example like school, so I was thinking it was the form-137 that he said was fake. SO i called my cousin and do all the papers over again! which is really a big of a stress for me. So now she went to to DEPED have her form-137 fixed and then they said, they will forward it to DFA manila for authentication and red ribbon. Now we are waiting for the red ribbon to be released. Is anybody out there have the same trouble as we have? If there is, can you give us any clarification on these matter? It would be highly appreciated. I have been googling questions and answers about it, but got no result. Thank you!

Answer:

Agree with threedaypriest here. It's better if you seek your information with the Embassy. They are the ones who know what needs to be done. If they are unwilling to allow your cousin to visit you, then there is very little that can be done.

Compare Radiation Level in Japan with that in the US?

Question:

At Japan section, I know many people ask about radiation every day.
I know these questions are quite annoying.
But, I want to ask it from a different direction.

When I watched a video on Youtube, someone from America said that the radiation level in his city was twice the data in the video. The video relates to radiation in Fukushima.
I couldn't believe it, and checked it through internet.
Unfortunately, official radiation data in the US is not open to public.
So, I had to search private sites, and I found some facts if these private sites were reliable.

#1 Radiation level in Tokyo is lower than the lowest data in the US.
#2 At some points in the US, radiation level is higher than that in Fukushima.

I failed to convert the unit?
Could you check them?

USA:
http://www.radiationnetwork.com/
Fukushima:
http://www.atom-moc.pref.fukushima.jp/dy…

Answer:

Many cities in the world have higher radiation then Tokyo. For example New York City has higher radiation levels then Tokyo.

ALL OF THIS IS SAFE.

People go crazy when they hear the words "radiation" but the fact is, radiation is ALL AROUND US ALL THE TIME. You get radiation RIGHT NOW sitting in front of your computer.

People need to calm down.

Places like Denver in the USA have naturally MUCH MUCH higher amounts of radiation 3x as much as Japan. This is because of Denver's location in Colorado.

Would a Japanese person find this weird? ?

Question:

I am going on exchange to Japan for one month, and I have a question that may sound a bit strange: would my host mother find it very weird if I were to hug her when i arrive, and then when I am leaving Japan at the end of the exchange? I've been told that hugging isn't really done in Japan, and that emotions aren't really displayed. What about the grandmother that lives with the family? I just want to be sure, so I don't freak them out, because I know I will get really teary when I have to leave.

Answer:

Hug them when you leave, but not when you first meet them.
Bowing would be more appropriate with the saying "osewa ni narimasu," when you first meet them,
especially if you're a guy.

You sound like such a kind person! Your host family should be happy to have an exchange student like you :]

Why do Japanese people live so long?

Question:

Answer:

Food and DNA?

Do you know 徐福?
始皇帝 sent him to Japan to look for the elixir of life.
In ancient China, they believed that immortals lived in Mt. 蓬莱.
Mt. Fuji had several names before. One of them is Mt. 蓬莱.
Actually, you can find 徐福's monument and his legends around Mt. Fuji even now.

Ancient Chinese people believed that strange civilization existed in Japan.
Also, 玄宗皇帝 planned to invade Japan because of the legend.
And, several ancient under-ocean ruins are actually found in Japan.
(They are not researched yet because the ocean current is too fast.)
Even in ancient era, they believed that the Japanese was a long-life race.
Isn't it interesting?

What is the minimum time you can stay for a working holiday in Japan?

Question:

Me and a few friends are looking at going on a working holiday in December. We have from the 19th of December till about the 18th of February (about 2 months). Wondering if that would be enough time to do one and if anyone knows any good companies that offer work for around this time. Thanks

Answer:

You are meant to find jobs yourself with the visa. 2 months might be pushing (given the current economic climate) but it is not impossible. If you know anybody or friend of a friend etc that has worked in Japan you could ask them to put in a good word for you or act as reference etc. Even for the 'classic' teaching positions 2 months may not be enough. My advice is start looking for any kind of job know and if possible make some contact with the companies so that when you get there, it will be bit easy. Also while you are at it, learn some Japanese it will smooth your way into the work place

Is anywhere in japan safe to live(from radiation)?

Is japan getting better yet? How is their radiation doing?

Question:

I know the earthquake devistated japan and moved it a whole 8 feet and that their trying to control their radiation they got from the bomb we dropped but how is that going? I know some people going to japan (which i think is dumb to do now) i wanna know what the raidiation is doin to the people their and what are the conditions there like now? Are we doing anything to help them?

Answer:

How about looking your own eyes?
There a lot of live cameras in Japan. You can see how we are living from your PC.

Ex.
http://www.goandroam.com/webcams/japan/t…

My family are living in Tokyo. Most people are a little concerned about the radiation.
But just a little. We are living as we did before the earthquake.

I'd really like a Japanese penpal?

Question:

I'm interested in Japanese pop culture, and would like to have a Japanese pen-pal. But I've heard lots of stories about people who've got pen-pals on the internet and have been kidnapped. Do you know any safe ways to get pen-pals? My school doesn't have any Japanese exchange students, so I can't do it via school.

Answer:

You can use this website to find a penpal. - http://ppi.searchy.net/ -
Check out this web site for safety issues. - http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_16/
It would also be a good idea to let your parents know about this, and maybe let them read the exchanges, for extra safety.

A question for Jishow?

Question:

Hi, my last question you gave me some good links which I didn't have time to read, the question was deleted. I would appreciate if you could please send those links to me again?

Thank you.

Answer:

Sorry, I've forgot what links I listed.
Some of the links at "Source", maybe.

Unfortunately, good sites have already closed because they are often attacked by Chinese right-wingers or Chinese government.
Only their Japanese translations are left at Seachina now.

I'll watch what happens to the following links after I answer you.

Good things to send to my Japanese friend?

Question:

I'm sending a package to my Japanese friend, but I'm not sure what to put in it. I bought some candy (Twizzlers, Sour Patch Kids, Laffy Taffy), but what else can I send? Anybody know of some small, inexpensive items that wouldn't be found in Japan and might be interesting?

Answer:

Ideally you'd love to show your friend what life is like where you are, right? So since you can't try the next best thing and send some things that are more unique where you are. Try for something that touches all five senses - something nice to look at, hear, to smell, taste, and touch. Some small picture books or calendars, posters, ashtrays, chocolates, fragrant bath salts, t-shirts or
pens/pencils with famous animation characters (except Mickey Mouse or Snoopy, which they have in abundance), sauces or salad dressings like Ranch, pure maple or berry syrups, colognes, jams, baseball caps, coasters, nice soap or shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, air fresheners, large containers of nuts, flavored coffees, tea, keychains, postcards, music, TV etc. would be great.
