I really don't understand this?

Question:

"僕の歌を聴いては泣く, 君はどこにいったんだろう" or "Kimi no uta wo kiite wa naku, kimi wa doko ni ittandarou" translates as "Listening to my songs, rather than where you will once"
Which is really different if the comma in the middle is taken out. And if replaced the comma with a period, the meaning changes again.

I just became aware that in translating, normally people would rephrase the basic meaning in Japanese to something that would be understandable for average English readers.
But I can't even get a grasp of what it means in this phrase because it keeps changing every time a punctuation mark differs. So confused. ;_;

This problem's really killing me on the inside, but I love translations. Can anybody clarify the phrase above? And also, does anybody have any tips on translating from Japanese to English?

Answer:

"You used to cry over my songs, now you don't even care anymore..."

Literally,
"Wondering where has the part of you gone, that used to cry every time you listen to my songs?"

I think all you need is to try even harder in understanding Japanese. You may want to have a native checker friend, who is trained for translation if you can. Japanese is not an easy language...
Good luck :)

Does the Korean language "romanize" their language?

Question:

Someone told me that the Korean language doesn't "romanize" their language. Is this true? In all honesty, I don't even know what that really means. I typed "Aniyo" which I thought was a way to spell, "No" in Korean and that the "official" way is "아니오". I guess I was wrong.
Is this true?

Answer:

Korean is normally written in Hangul, the Korean alphabet : 아니오 . There are several systems for representing the Korean language using the Latin alphabet, like Revised Romanization, McCune-Reischauer or Yale, but there is no standard system yet like Pinyin in Mandarin Chinese or romaji in Japanese.

Need a proffesional opinion! Best way to learn Japanese?

Question:

My Japanese knowledge is extremely limited, but I can say a few simple sentences. I've tried using this program on my Ipod to help me learn Japanese, and it helped to learn some of the basics, but I fear I won't be able to use it for more complex sentences and thoughts and such. I've tried listening to songs, and I can pick out maybe 1 or 2 words in a given song, but that doesn't really help. I've tried watching manga, but they talk like at the speed of light so that's not helping.

Is the best way to just join a course or something? Does rosetta stone actually work, and should I use that? The last language I learned was Spanish and that took me 4 years and I'm barely fluent. Also, I'm 16. The reason I add that is because I've heard older people have a more difficult time learning Japanese.

Thanks in advance to all those who read my question, but I'm really looking for some kind of language teacher or someone who actually learned Japanese to answer this. Thanks again!

Answer:

It is always best to take a course. At least there you would have the proper guidance to learn. You'll be able to get answers to your questions (at least with a good instructor). You will also have other to practice with which, is very important in learning. Here in the States, it is cheaper than purchasing Rosetta Stone language softwares.
Learning with an instructor is way much faster than on your own. When I took a Japanese language class, I notice how much faster and learned much more, than just learning on my own. I was also more motivated to study more since, my obligation to pass the class was on the line. On your own, you can only learn phrases and a little grammar but, usually in a class you will most likely find other techniques and other important part of the language you will not find on your own.

Do wasabi paste or tamarind paste go bad?

Question:

i make sushi sometimes, but not often enough to use all of the wasabi paste i mix up. so i have two tiny jars of wasabi paste (wasabi powder mixed with water) in the refrigerator, and i'd like to know if they can still be eaten or if there would be something wrong with them by now. one has been in there for i don't even know how long, the other has been in there for 2 or 3 weeks. essentially it's just mustard, right? mustard lasts for a long time...

also, i bought a pack of tamarind paste a long time ago (no longer than one year) that has no expiration date on it. i haven't opened it and it's been refrigerated. would that expire?

Answer:

Wasabi paste mixed with water is usually hotter than wasabi from a tube, but being exposed to air makes the mixed wasabi loose its strong flavour, even after just a few minutes. Therefore, it is unlikely that your wasabi will go bad, but it certainly won't have the same kick it usually has when freshly prepared.

In Japanese restaurants, wasabi is usually prepared in very small amounts only when it is needed. This helps to keep the flavour.

Define Executive Order 9066 and tell me why its was important?

Question:

detail pleaes

Answer:

United States Executive Order 9066 was signed into law on February 19, 1942 (during World War II), by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, utilizing his authority as Commander in Chief to exercise war powers.

This order authorized military commanders to declare areas of the United States as military areas "from which any or all persons may be excluded." It was eventually applied to one-third of the land area of the U.S. and was used against those with "Foreign Enemy Ancestry" even though they were native-born U.S. citizens.

The Secretary of War was to assist those residents of such an area who were excluded with transportation, food, shelter, and other accommodations.

Though they are the best-known case, those of Japanese ancestry were not the only ones who received such treatment. Some Italian-Americans and German-Americans were also subjected to similar restrictions, including internment. Executive Order 9066 was finally rescinded by President Gerald Ford on April 19, 1976.

Is this related to Canadian history?

Question:

Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone knows if the partition of India & Pakistan is related to Canadian history in any way at all?

Answer:

Only indirectly. Both Canada and India (as well as the territory that would become Pakistan) were part of the British Empire prior to WWII. Canada, though, had already achieved a great deal of autonomy with "Dominion" status, whereas home rule in India was more complex and halting. However, the Second World War hastened both countries' desire for full independence.

In the case of India, nationalists had been increasingly pushing for independence since the late 1800s motivated by the perception that British rule was exploiting the Indian economy and undermining traditional Indian cultures. There was widespread resistance in India to Britain during the war, with some Indians (in Bengal) joining a Japanese-sponsored rebel army. British power was greatly weakened by 1945, and it was clear that British rule could no longer be forcibly upheld. This was the chief reason for Britain's hasty partition and departure from the Indian subcontinent in 1947.

Canada, on the other hand, did not experience a long resistance to British rule prior to WWII. Canadians were major and enthusiastic, at least initially, participants in the British war effort. However, British military planners tended to treat Canadians poorly, using them in costly attacks without giving Canadians much of a voice in setting strategy or politics. The worst example of this was the disastrous attack on Dieppe (along the cost of France) in 1942 -- an operation manned almost entirely by Canadians but planned largely (and badly) by British officers. Thousands of Canadians were killed or captured at Dieppe. Though Canada remained active in the Allied war effort until the surrender of Germany in 1945 (including fighting heroically in the D-Day invasion), many Canadians never forgot or forgave Britain for how they were treated during the war, particularly at Dieppe. As a result, Canadians widely demanded and quickly received independence from the British Empire.

So, the similarities between Canadian independence and the partition of the Indian subcontinent are limited. The events happened close to each other and shared a common root cause (WWII), but the context and specifics are very different.

Why is education the most complete and important in a republic?

Question:

AP EURO homework,
1689 to 1755

Answer:

The question assumes a premise which is not necessarily true. I suppose, however, that whomever posed the poorly worded question wants you to answer along the following lines:

A republic assumes a democracy where leaders are elected by popular vote. The questioner assumes that, if the voters are uneducated, they will be easily swayed by charlatans, whereas if the electorate is well-educated they will vote for honest, qualified leaders. The reasoning goes on to assume that well-qualified leaders will promote education and so that, in the democratic republic, education will be most universal.

Choice of the dates 1689 to 1755 is interesting. Perhaps the educator doesn't want you to consider the question in the context of 1950 to 2010 -- the Rise and Fall of the Planet Earth's greatest Republic: the United States of America. In just 60 years, in this republic, Education went from an engine that drove innovation, creative thinking and invention -- and gave rise to History's greatest Nation Republic Ever -- to a tool of unscrupulous politicians, "politically correct" ideologues, and religious demagogues. Now, many educators are merely unionists polluting their charges with notions of entitlement and greed that have reduced our once great nation to a people of paupers indebted to the Chinese and Japanese.

While its not too late to turn this ship around, today's students need to seriously question the questions their educators are asking. This question is a case in point.

What would this name be in Japanese?

Question:

I was looking at Katakana and Hiragana and notice that all of the letters have consonant-vowel sounds (i.e. Ta, ki, yu,) instead of vowel-consonant. So what would "Emily" be in Japanese, if there are no vowel-consonant combination syllables?

It would really help if you could paste links to pictures of whatever letters or symbols you talk about.

Thanks.

Answer:

written エミリー and pronounced: eh-mee-ree-ee romanized: emirii

the name just changes to fit the japanese syllabary as accurately as poosibel (l's usually get replaced by r's)

EDIT: katakana characters in order: e, mi, ri, ---

--- is katakana shorthand for a doubled vowel

EDIT2: the --- is actually written vertically when writing vertically, the characters do not change

Answer:

Hello Safari, The best way to learn Japanese is by taking a class, enrolling in a course or investing in a good textbook. If you can't take classes then the self-study method with the correct resources is a good way.

The key to learning Japanese effectively is to work on your grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Its best to think of these as separate categories and focus on each specific category as these require different methods and techniques.

Start by learning the basics through grammar. These books really helped me.

• Shin Nihongo no Kiso I & II
http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2011…

• An Introduction to Modern Japanese by Osamu Mizutani & Nobuko Mizutani
http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2011…

• Japanese Demystified by Eriko Sato a self-teaching guide
http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2011…

These books cover both polite Japanese, which is extremely important to learn in order to speak Japanese effectively and causal Japanese, which is great for everyday conversations.

I also recommend trying to learn a certain amount of vocab or kanji each day as this helps you build up your vocab and kanji ability. I tried to learn 5 kanji per day or about 20 a week and did the same with vocab.

Watching Japanese anime or any Japanese TV program is a good idea for improving your listening skills and also your vocabulary. Keep a notebook and jot down any new words you hear. Then look them up and find out the meaning.

Websites are not always the best way to learn Japanese. Most websites are run by people with no teaching credentials and are not even native speakers of Japanese. Some of them are just interested in making money and not in helping you in what you need to be successful in learning Japanese.

Sorry, not the answer you're waiting for, but if you seriously consider learning and taking the exam, maybe you should get a better text book asap. Those are almost all basic phrases so if your book doesn't explain them, I doubt it's a good material to prepare with. Even if you get all meanings transed here, you won't be able to use them in sentences practically. good luck

What language uses pictograms?

Question:

social studies question , study guide for seventh grade midterms tomorrow .
What language uses pictograms? Out of China , India , and Greece , I believe .

Answer:

Most languages, like for example Ancient Chinese, Mayan, Sumerian, and Egyptian, started out using pictograms. But modern languages that don't use an alphabet use _logograms_, like for example Han characters used for the Chinese languages and Japanese (Kanji), and less frequently for Korean and Vietnamese.

Practically all languages spoken in India use an alphabet, and Modern Greek is written in the Greek alphabet.

Who knows info about the bombing of Pearl Harbor? It is my history day project so I need info. Please help!!!!?

Question:

Answer:

Ok i love World War II history so.....

December 7, 1941 was the day Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Imperial Japanese - a day that will live in infamy - quote from President Franklin Roosevelt during his speech on December 8th. In that speech, he declared war against Japan, and then Hitler declared war agianst the U.S, which can be seen as the start of the second world war.
It was a Sunday morning in Hawaii when the harbor was attacked by Japanese planes and destroyed about 20 vessels and i believe around 8 battleships - which included the USS Arizona. Of the 2400 people lost that day, and about 1000 others wounded, over 1000 lives were lost from the crew of the Arizona. Today, there is an Arizona memorial that you will want to look up.
I will post some good links and general info about the attack.

There was a conspiracy that FDR let the attack happen on Pearl Harbor, i actually did a school report on it. Some people believe that FDR had knowledge of an attack on the harbor, but let it slide because he was in favor of joining the war. Congress did not want to go to war, for obvious reasons of coming off of the Great Depression etc, and FDR knew that if Japan bombed the crap out of U.S. soil, the United States would have to go to war. Keep in mind that this is a theory. I would do some research on FDR Pearl Harbor conspiracy.

There is SOOOO info about Pearl Harbor. With that being said, use good websites! Wikipedia is good for GENERAL INFO, do not use statistics from Wikipedia unless you find that source within the Wiki article. The 70th anniversary just came up and you can find TONS of info about Pearl Harbor.

In all honesty, this will be one of the easiest history projects you may ever do!

Have fun and remember those who gave up their lives for our freedom.

Definition of first language?

Question:

I am Japanese and I was born in Japan.
However, I moved over to England when I was 2 and I believe I am slightly better at English than Japanese. I am fluent in Japanese except I think I can express myself better in English. So for me, what is my first language? Is it your best language or literally the first language you learnt even if it isn't your best language?

Ps Universities say that A levels in a foreign language doesnt "count" if its your first language. I already have a Japanese A level so Im wondering if it "counts" or not ;)

Answer:

If you need the A level to "count" then you should list English as your first language. Most children do not start speaking until around age two, so you essentially have two first languages. You were raised bilingual.

Nom? Nomu? otakus? questions about these ?

Question:

Why do people say “nom nom“ or ゛nomu゛ when they eat? if they are going by japanese, isnt nomu for drinking? and like how people say “hai“ for hi, i dont understand. Or when people put japan as their country and never been there...is this a otaku? Some one please explain..

Answer:

hai for "hi" isn't a reference to the Japanese word for yes - some may use it thinking they're being all cool and Japanese but they're just being noobs.
usually hai is used to sound cuter and less mundane than hi.

Sometimes people use hai to answer the calling of their name, not as in "hi" but as in "yes?"

Otaku is the japanese word for "nerd" essentially. There are all different forms of otaku. Like a Justin Bieber otaku or an anime otaku.
In North America people refer to themselves as Otaku if they are fans of anime - they're not classified as otaku for saying "om nom nom" or "hai", but for liking Japanese animation in general.

Did Hitler really have to be forcibly separated from General Heinz Guderian after altercation at end of WW2?

Question:

how true this story? (and heard that it was due to Guderian accusing hitler in front of general staff after Hitler was shouting at them for causing the loss of troops or an operation..)

Answer:

The last meeting of Gen. Guderian with Hitler was at a situation conference, where the General insisted on a strategic withdrawal on the Eastern front, stressing the imminent encirclement and certain annihilation of German troops trapped there. Guderian, possibly fired up with the drinks he had at an earlier meeting with the Japanese ambassador, stood face to face with Hitler, matched the dictator word for word, in short, it became a shouting match. Hitler was, as usual insisting on the German troops' holding on despite the desperate situation. Supported by his other yes-men officers, and court jesters, who assured Hitler that they can hold the position, Hitler refused to see reason and contradicted Guderian on every point.

Guderian was subsequently relieved of his post on grounds of "ill health", Hitler's euphemism to avoid giving the impression that there was dissension among his officers.

It was also Guderian, along with Gen. Heinrici, and later on Albert Speer, who had the will to tell Hitler to his face that the war was lost, thereby falling into disfavor.

Answer:

Slowly but surely. The reality is, it'll be years before everything in that area gets back to life. I have a friend in Miyagi-ken who was about 7km from the wave, though, and he's been back at his school, teaching, since just a couple months after the tidal wave. It doesn't help that recently the Japanese government has siphoned off a lot of the money meant for disaster relief into their fund to protect the whale hunters (a practice which only helps a handful of coastal towns)

How much all will cost?

Question:

I decided to go Japan,Tokyo International high school,so i need advice.I find everythink/all information and one think i want to know.Do you have to pay for airplane oe International high school will pay for you? How much all will cost?

Answer:

PIPEDREAM ALERT!!!!!

Someone has already mentioned you asked this same question before. Nothing has changed. This is some dream you have that is not going to happen. Anybody who thinks that the school they attend is going to pay for airfare is so clueless as to be unable to pass anything similar to an entrance exam and an essay written by such a person who do more to keep them out of the school than to get them in.

If you want to know costs, Google the school you think you can attend and find the prices. If they are anything like U.S. boarding schools, figure on around $30-40K/year. Add in several thousand dollars for airfare home when school is not in session.

Please japanese help! How to change nickname of Yahoo answer Japan?

Question:

to change yahoo ID?
Hello,
I have an account on Yahoo.co.jp Answer,,, but I would like to change the ID name that I used for yahoo answer japan! Please Japanese native, can you explain me how to change yahoo ID?

Thank you! :)

Edit:

Someone said me to do this;

click 登録情報 (Registration Information) → click ニックネームの編集(edit nickname)
you will see ニックネームを作成(create a nickname) under your current ID name so click that and type your new ID name
click 決定(decision) → click 編集を終了(finished editing)

other details:

I already done the tutorial above... the fact is that even if I create new nicknames, the 'defoult' nickname remains always the first that I created (that it's also Yahoo ID)... how I can 'skip' from a nickname to the other? I create 3 nicknames, but it's always showen the first, and I don't understand how to change... especially for Yahoo japan answer... I want to change nickname! Please, help!

Thank you!

Answer:

I am not a Japanese native, but I have an account there. I will try to help you.

I did not find the word 登録情報 to click on.

I went to "My 千恵袋"
The only page where to change something is the page 設定 (set up), but there is no possibility to change the nickname, as far as I saw.

The other page where you can change personal information is プロフィールを編集 (edit profile), but there I could not find any possibility either.

Sorry, it seems that there is no possibility to change the nickname.

@@@@
Edit:
I found the page and the button you mentioned. I succeded to create a nickname by pressing ニックネームの編集 設定 編集を終了. Then I tried to make the the nickname my 表示名, but I also could not find where to go.

By the way, you can click on your profile name. Then a new page opens. Maybe there?

Edit no. 2
I clicked on プロフィール. It is a tab the is below the writing of Yahoo!Japan. Then I clicked on 編集 of プロフィール, which is in the middle of the page. I tried to change 表示名 to the nickname. The change was accepted by 決定, but when I went to this page again. The original name was there. I was surprised!!

Which of these 6 cities would be best to visit in Japan?

Question:

I'm entering a contest to go to Japan, and it asks which city and these are the choices:
SHIBUYA
HARAJYUKU
AKIHABARA
SHINJYUKU
IKEBUKURO
ROPPONGI

Which city would be the best to visit? One with lots of shopping, traditional, lollita fashion shops, and anime/otaku stores XP Thankiez >w< much appreciated~

Answer:

Hello Kayla, These are all areas of Tokyo and each has its own distinct flavour and character. Tokyo is almost like a collection of separate smaller cities.

The best place for anime/otaku stores is Akihabara – known as electric city and home of Japanese anime and otaku.

The best place for Shopping and Fashion would be Harajuku - home to Japanese street fashion. Harajuku Station and Takeshita Dori have many shops that cater to teen fashion and Japanese street fashion.

To learn korean or japanese?

Question:

hello!
i've always liked asia and wanted to learn an asian language. the ones are really appealing to me are japanese and korean.
i knew about japanese language, music, dramas first so i tried to learn a bit of it, unfortunately i just ended up quitting with time (i just studied it by myself, with a book that i have).
and then, for the last two years or so i've become so obsessed about korean culture, language, music... that i feel that i want to start studying it.
right now i'm more interested in korean but i feel bad about leaving japanese aside.
so what do you think, should i go for korean or none of them? sometimes i think that maybe i should wait to visit the countries because i might end up not liking them (which i hope doesn't happen) and sometimes i think it's not worth it because they're not so popular languages, like mandarin chinese which i'm not very interested about (it doesn't sound so nice imo).
thanks in advance! it'd like to hear what other people think.
p.s.: i'm spanish so both would be very hard to learn, though japanese is easy to pronounce.

Answer:

The grammar structures of Korean and Japanese are very similar, so it wouldn't be too hard to jump back and forth. You want to learn Korean? Learn it! And you already have some knowledge of Japanese so you should be able to go back to it pretty easily. I would definitely recommend visiting both countries to get a little experience, but don't worry about not liking them--keep an open mind and you'll enjoy yourself no matter what!

Good for you, learning all these languages!

What would my name sound like in japanese?

Question:

Ok, I'm from Croatia and I have a pretty unusual name - Tvrtko. I'm named after Tvrtko I of Bosnia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tvrtko_I_of_Bosnia), and I tried so find what my japanese name in katakana would be. I wound up finding two solutions:
1) (from the japanese wikipedia article about Bosnia) トヴルトコ (tovurutoko)
2) (from google translate) トゥブルトコ (touburutoko)
So, if you're japanese or know japanese, what do you think sounds/looks better?
あなたの答えをありがとう。 日本語は美しい言語ですそして僕それを勉強したい。

Answer:

they are both appropriate but this character ヴ is a new form to help pronounce "v" sounds more accurately. before ブ would have been used (and still is)

it really does depend on how your name is pronounced in reality. for example; any long vowel sounds need to be emphasized with an appropriate double vowel in katakana.

katakana works by breaking the foreign word into syllable that fit japanese sounds.

toburutoko トブルトコ would be how i would guess at pronouncing it by looking at your name
but it is much better to do it from the sound, not how it is spelt. if there are any stresses on the vowels (for example the last o is lengthened slightly) you may need to add — after the character for the vowel that needs to sound longer. トブルトコ—. really depends on how your name is pronounced in your own language first.

I wanna try sushi what should I try?

Question:

Answer:

Hello Nick, It is best to start with a simple roll and then get more adventurous with nigirizushi and different toppings.

My favourites are

Makizushi (巻寿司) which is a rolled sushi. I really like Salmon roll, Cucumber roll and Avocado roll.

Nigirizushi (握り寿司) which consists of a bed of sushi rice, usually with a bit of wasabi, and a topping draped over it. Favourite toppings are salmon (sake), tuna (maguro) and prawns (ebi).

Inarizushi (稲荷寿司) which is a pouch of fried tofu filled with usually just sushi rice.

I enjoy my sushi with a little wasabi and soy sauce and like to have some pickled ginger to cleanse the palate after each sushi.

What do they call "cold cases" in Japanese?

Question:

I know there's plenty of terms with the same meaning whose literal translations differ A LOT. So I'm wondering if there's a term for what we call "cold cases." That is, a murder case that has gone unsolved for a very long time, to the point it's "cold."

Answer:

We have expressions such as;
未解決事件 mikaiketsu-jiken http://eow.alc.co.jp/%e6%9c%aa%e8%a7%a3%…
迷宮入り meikyuu-iri http://eow.alc.co.jp/%e8%bf%b7%e5%ae%ae%…
Literally means "get into a labyrinth”
”迷宮入りとなった事件” = "cold case"

How did WW2 shaped American liberalism and political and social thought?

Question:

Can you guys please rephrase this question because I don't understand it.

Also can you guys give some ideas to answer the questions.

Answer:

World War II, or the Second World War (often abbreviated as WWII or WW2), was a global conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945, involving most of the world's nations—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised. In a state of "total war", the major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by significant events involving the mass death of civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it is the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 50 million to over 70 million fatalities.
The war is generally accepted to have begun on 1 September 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Germany, and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and most of the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Germany set out to establish a large empire in Europe. From late 1939 to early 1941, in a series of campaigns and treaties, Germany conquered or subdued much of continental Europe; amid Nazi-Soviet agreements, the nominally neutral Soviet Union fully or partially occupied and annexed territories of its six European neighbours, including Poland. Britain and the Commonwealth remained the only major force continuing the fight against the Axis in North Africa and in extensive naval warfare. In June 1941, the European Axis launched an invasion of the Soviet Union, giving a start to the largest land theatre of war in history, which, from that moment on, tied down the major part of the Axis military power. In December 1941, Japan, which had been at war with China since 1937, and aimed to dominate Asia, attacked the United States and European possessions in the Pacific Ocean, quickly conquering much of the region.
The Axis advance was stopped in 1942 after the defeat of Japan in a series of naval battles and after defeats of European Axis troops in North Africa and, decisively, at Stalingrad. In 1943, with a series of German defeats in Eastern Europe, the Allied invasion of Fascist Italy, and American victories in the Pacific, the Axis lost the initiative and undertook strategic retreat on all fronts. In 1944, the Western Allies invaded France, while the Soviet Union regained all territorial losses and invaded Germany and its allies. The war in Europe ended with the capture of Berlin by Soviet and Polish troops and the subsequent German unconditional surrender on 8 May 1945. The Japanese Navy was defeated by the United States, and invasion of the Japanese Archipelago ("Home Islands") became imminent. The war in Asia ended on 15 August 1945 when Japan agreed to surrender.
The war ended with the total victory of the Allies over the Axis in 1945. World War II altered the political alignment and social structure of the world. The United Nations (UN) organisation was established to foster international cooperation and prevent future conflicts. The Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold War, which lasted for the next 46 years. Meanwhile, the influence of European great powers started to decline, while the decolonisation of Asia and Africa began. Most countries whose industries had been damaged moved towards economic recovery. Political integration, especially in Europe, emerged as an effort to stabilise postwar relations.

Can you please translate this english sentences to simple japanese romaji sentences?

Question:

this is my pen.
my pen is (silver/blue) in colour.
it is malaysian pen.
this pen is 9 dollar.
i bought it last week.
i bought it at section 2.
I and my friend go there together.
i really love this pen.

Answer:

Your English is wrong in some sentences:
You wrote: "it is malaysian pen." The article is missing. The sentence should go: "It is a Malaysian pen."
There is another mistake: You wrote: "I and my friend go there together." Instead of I you should use me. "Me and my friend go there together."
Make sure to start a sentence with a capital letter.

This is my pen.
My pen is silver and blue in colour.
It is a Malaysian pen.
This pen costs 9 Dollars. (Plural S after Dollar!)
I bought it last week.
I bought it at section 2.
Me and my friend went there together. (Past tense is better here).
I really love this pen.

Kore wa watashi no pen desu.
Gin'iro to ao no pen desu.
Mareeshia san desu.
Kono pen wa 9 (kyuu) doru kakarimashita.
Senshuu kaimashita.
Sekushon tsuu de kaimashita.
Tomodachi to issho ni soko ni ikimashita.
Kono pen ga hontou ni suki desu.

In Japanese script how does it write in: sensei, genki desuka?

Question:

In japanese script how does it write in: sensei, genki desuka? nasurin san ni oboeteimasuka? kore wa, long time no see. sore wa mata ne. take care

Answer:

先生、元気ですか?
NASURINさんを覚えていますか?
これは、久しぶりでした。
それは、またね。
お気をつけて。

First, you might want to reconsider this sentence: "kore wa, long time no see". Especially the "kore wa" part. Also, "mata ne" is kinda casual, so it might not be the best choice of words when speaking with your sensei.
Secondly, I added NASURIN because there is no way for me to know how she would write her name. I would guess ナスリン in katakana but, really, this depends on the person itself.

EDIT: Rotbuche is of course right; kinda skipped over it as I was only really paying attention to rewriting it. (Corrected it meanwhile)
Also, he gave a correct answer about "I miss you as well", though, taking in consideration the wording of the prior sentences I would rather take "kimi". (more familiar, casual).
君がいなくて寂しい。
Also, he interpreted Jane as a name, which could be true, but if you happened to mean "Ja/Jaa ne" as in "bye/later" then it is: じゃね。

Should I get My japanese coach?

Question:

There is also a my chinese coach, my spanish coach, and an Sat coach. I was thinking about getting this game. should i get it? would my japanese coach give advance levels or just beginners?

Answer:

likely to not go very advanced but probably worth getting anyway. if you want to learn a language it is best to use every method you can find not just one.
i reccomend michel thomas method (it is a cd course that goes up to advanced level) if you want to get a bit more advanced with how to speak
but nothing really beats an actual teacher for writing and getting a good grasp of grammar.
watching tv and films also helps with pronounciation.
there are quite a few different DS games for adults and kids that teach japanese and they all have benefits in some way. but dont expect them to go very advanced.

What role did events in Europe and the Soviet Union play in the decision to drop the Hiroshima bomb?

Question:

I really need some last minute help!!! Also

What other options could the Allies and especially the Unites States have pursued? What were the advantages and disadvantages of these options?

Answer:

Hi,

One theory is that the Hiroshima bomb was used in the end more as a show of power to the Soviets than to force a Japanese surrender.

The Japanese had already investigated the possibilty of a negotiated peace, knowing that invasion was just a matter of time. Their main condition was that the Emperor of Japan remained in his position after the war and this was turned down by the allies who wanted an unconditional surrender.

In Europe it was becoming obvious that there was going to be a stand off between the western allies and the Soviets.. as well as this the the Japanese were now being rolled back in the east by the Red Army. The west became worried about the communists land grabs and the theory is that the US flexed it's atomic muscles to show Stalin how powerful they were and keep him in line.

The Alternatives to the bomb would have been:

A) an invasion of Japan in which possibly millions of Americans and the allies would have died.. not to mention the millions of Japanese.

B) Negotiate a peace, which is unlikely as there were powerful factions in Japan who opposed it. The moderates who wanted it would not have succeeded.

The irony is that after the two bombs were dropped an Japan surrendered, the US allowed them to keep the Emperor anyway.

So, it was either to save American lives by avoiding and invasion or to stop Stalin from taking on the West... both points were pretty valid at the time and I suspect that the US Government decided using the weapon served both purposes.

Hope this helps!

Take care.

Japanese Culture (nengajo)?

Question:

Hello, I have a Japanese penpal and I would love to surprise her with a Nengajo card, I only know a little about them, so any information you have would be much appreciated. Obviously you cant buy them in shops in the UK so what would you recommend? can you illustrate your own, and what would I have to include, any links showing examples or templates? Ok I will stop and let you answer :) THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE! I hope she likes it!

Answer:

Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu.
明けましておめでとうございます。
(this is only said AFTER 1st of jan has kicked in, before you say yoi ototoshi o良いお年を )

nenga ねんが should be written in red on the side with stamp and address (in japan this means they know it is for new year and will be delivered on the right date - they deliver on new years day - therfore you can use 明けましておめでとうございます as apposed to 良いお年を as it will be in the new year)

template wise, you could use a postcard size picture and make your own, but also there are some places online where you can print off templates. there is some info on here http://www.letsjapan.markmode.com/index.…

they are very similar to western postcards in the sense that there is a picture on one side and the writing and address on the other. remember the address goes from postcode backwards (starting with the postcode then counrty, then city, prefecture, street, then ending up with the name at the bottom)

How would I say this in Japanese?

Question:

How would I ask 'how did that come about?' or something similar?

For example, somebody tells me they are working at a safari park for the summer, and I want to know how they ended up doing that ( without sounding too nosy or demanding)

Any help appreciated! And please don't use an online translator.. I'll know!

Answer:

Douyatte sono shigoto o tottano desuka?
どうやってその仕事を取ったのですか?

As you may know, there's a formal and informal way of speaking and writing in Japanese. The text above is in the formal. Hope this helps :)

Question:

I know この and これ means "This", but I've seen people translate kono and kore as "The" also....Is this normal? Does Kono and sono mean "this" most cases, and "The" depending?

Also I've seen in some translations Sore (それ) is not only translated as "That" But also as "It's"
Is this normal too? I'm confused, please clear this up for me so I can have a better understanding on this matter! Thank you! :D

この+nown, for example, this book is as この本.
This book is cheap.is as この本は安い.

結構(けっこう)いい ですね means something like 'pretty good, huh' or like 'wasn't it [a good reaction?]'
I think she was apologizing for making that loud noise or something.
There doesn't need to be a っ for じゃなくて but other than that

Your Japanese is pretty good!

If one of the 'Big Three' (UK,USA & USSR) weren't involved, could the other 2 have defeated the Axis?

Question:

So, remove just one of the allies from the war.. could the other two have coped with the Axis threat? For instance, without UK it's unlikely there'd have been a Western Front or North African theatre.. would that have made it impossible for the USA to operate effectively against Germany? Or left the USSR exposed to the full force of the Axis? Without the USSR could the Western allies have ever launched D-Day? Without the USA would a 2nd front ever happen? Would UK have lost it's Empire to Japan? Would Japan have turned on Russia without it's need to fight both Western allies in the Pacific?
Note: Just to make things simpler, when I say UK, I'm including Empire & Commonwealth... no disrespect to those allies at all.. it just gets a bit complicated to break it down too much. As these nations forces were integrated with the UK's command structure, I use 'UK' as un 'umbrella' term to cover them all (ie. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sth Africa, etc).

Answer:

Probably not.

Had Britain surrendered in 1940 the Germans, undistracted by a 2 front war, would almost certainly have defeated USSR in 1941 or 1942, and then USA - even with the best will in the world - would have found an invasion of occupied Europe from 3000 miles away across the Atlantic impractical to say the least, and would have had to face 100% of the Germany ground army on landing rather than 20%.

80% of all German losses in WW2 were on the Eastern Front;the prospects of a successful UK/USA invasion of Occupied Europe facing the full might of the Wehrmacht on the ground if the Soviet Union had earlier been defeated or had not participated in WW2 would have been slim, particularly as German airpower would have been greater and thus the air supremacy enjoyed by the Allies over northwest Europe - a large factor in their success - would have been absent.

Without USA,the Soviet Union would not have received the 10 million tons of strategic raw materials sent by America under Lend-Lease,nor the thousands of tanks, aircraft (although admittedly mostly obsolete models) trucks and guns supplied in 1942 which kept them in the war that year. This could well have meant defeat for the Russians on the Eastern Front.Britain, without US forces, although in no real danger of a German invasion, would have been unable to launch a successful invasion of Occupied Europe, which would then have remained under German control much longer.

In the Pacific,The Japanese would not have had too many problems consolidating their hold on conquered areas if there had been no USA to fight,so their control over these areas would also have lasted much longer.

The Axis was sufficiently powerful that it took a combination of Imperial Britain,Communist USSR and capitalist USA to defeat them.Without any 1 of these 3 in the alliance, the Axis would have been able to achieve at least a negotiated peace on favourable terms, and possibly even outright victory.

As Stalin said about the alliance and its victory
Britain provided the time
Russia provided the blood
America provided the money

and all 3 were needed to defeat the Axis.
