Why does onomatopoeia change when you change language?

Question:

i just dont think it makes much sense.... like for example english people say huh? and french people say hein? and then theres like woof woof for a dog and then in french you have jappe jappe.... if the same dog is barking why does it make a different sound when you translate the paper?

Answer:

the way different people hear it, for instance a cat sound is "meow" in English and "nyaa" or "nyan" in Japanese, but if you hear a cat in real life you realize tha either of these could really describe it
