How much money would I need to bring with me?

Question:

I am HOPING to go to Fukuoka Japan next summer... Preferably next June for about 3 weeks. I'm staying with a friend and her family, so I will have my stay for free. I was just wondering about how much money should I need to bring for spending. I mean, I want to go out and see sites and perhaps go out to eat a bit, and buy a few things (I'm not a big spendthrift) I have just never been overseas so I thought I would ask.

Answer:

It really depends....most likely you will eat 1 or 2 meals a day at your friend's house...which just leaves a meal here or there in the city, transport, and shopping money. You can get a subway day pass for about 1000 yen, otherwise the Nishitetsu trains can get a little high. But you could get by with USD$500. Of course if you want to go all over like see Nagasaki, Kagoshima, try an onsen (hot spring) in Beppu or Yufuin, etc, you'd better bring more. If you want to go all over Kyushu, look into getting a JR Kyushu Rail Pass (see www.japanrailpass.net)
You actually don't have to bring so much, but have an ATM card with you, and if you need cash just go to any Japanese post office and get yen from it for a modest fee. July is hot and humid as hell, but you have one thing going for you - try to be there during July 15, which is the Yamakasa Festival. You'll need to either stay up all night to see it, or get up in the middle of the night, but up to a million people come to see the 10 metre floats get carried and raced down the streets. There is nothing outside of Japan like it.

Bushido Code Kanji characters - Please help?

Question:

I know I've asked this question several times, but I'm just getting a final verdict from Japanese speakers that the kanji is correct for the Bushido tenets for my tattoo. Are these characters correct?

http://i.imgur.com/qMzv0.jpg

And final question, is it correct that they are displayed vertically? Because thats how I plan to get them tattooed, going vertically down my arm, for the kanji that have 2 characters?

Answer:

We can write Japanese both vertically and horizontally. So vertical writing is correct.

Japanese Anime Recommendations and Help?

Question:

I need help with finding a specific type of anime if there are any like it. The type of anime I am looking for is where the protagonist, preferably male is somewhat unpopular and doesn't have many friends. However the other protagonist, preferably female is the opposite of the male and is really beautiful and popular in school and has a lot of guys going after her but she ends up falling in love with the unpopular male and this stirs up in a way, a romantic comedy school anime.

Answer:

The protagonist is someone who posts the same message on this forum, probably because he didn't like the responses he got the first time. Touch of cluelessness involved because that means that either 1) people don't know if there were no answers or 2) people don't care.

In answer to your question, I suggest doing a search of the Y!A database with your question exactly as above. Review the answers you got the first time.

Do people wish on coins in Japan?

Question:

You know how you toss a penny into a fountain and make a wish? I'm just wondering if that's exclusive to Americanized culture or something, or if people do it in Asian countries, like Japan? I know they use yen in Japan, but do they do the same thing? Random I know, but I'm curious!

Answer:

Yes, they do. Mainly at shrines. The people get a little wish, and the shrine gets a little money...Just think, 100 100 yen coins a day is almost $100 !

How much would it cost for a trip to Japan?

Question:

Departing from Taiwan, Taipei prob. Plan's to go when I'm 18. Also, anyone know exactly what papers needed for a teen to go out? I mean, I want to take my bro with me, when I'm 18, he'll be 14 tho. I haven't talked to my parents yet, but I want to know about how much it'll cost and if it'll be actually possible to take him with me.

So yea, how much? Option 1 is to go with a tour, option 2 is just for me to buy the ticket and head over. Preferably China Airlines, I'm more familiar with that.

Also, how much would hotel cost there?

And um... I'm only still 15. Yes I know, early plans. I've been planning since 5 years ago actually, but back then was with my parents. But... they don't like walking, and they complain too much, and... I don't freaking want to be restrained from this and that. So yea, here I am having some planning done early.

Answer:

First off, the air fare quoted above is waaaaaaaaay overblown. In August during peak season on a Japanese carrier you can get round trip tickets for about TWD12,000 (about USD$415)+taxes. On off seasons you can get it for about TWD11,000 or less. So unless there is some major oil war or something happening, you can fly for a LOT less.
I would forget the tour - they are often made for a particular type of person - like more for the interests of old people, for example. You can tailor exactly what you want by doing it yourself, and getting around
is easy with signs in English for public transportation.
If you are traveling all across the country though, then you should look into getting a JR Rail Pass, or a regional JR Pass, or tourist air tickets like JAL's Yokoso fare or ANA's Japan Airpass.
And you can get a subway day pass for about 1000 yen in many major cities, plus there are overnight buses between Tokyo and Osaka or Kyoto, for example.
Hotels can be cheap to very high - it depends on what you want.
You don't say where you are going exactly, but you can get some economy hotels across the country like at
http://www.toyoko-inn.com/eng/
http://www.superhoteljapan.com/en/
http://www.kid97.co.jp/~jeh-group/jeh-gr…
or even for less in Tokyo or Kyoto at

Do you think Japanese culture promote pornography?

Question:

For several years Japan has been one of the world's biggest source of child pornography, do you think Japanese culture has a role to play here or is it the work of a few individuals?

http://www.economist.com/node/15731382

Answer:

Hah...which country doesn't these days ?
Does Brittney Spears and Aguilera ring a bell ? look at their early stuff, those pictures would fit in any men's magazine.

I agree though that it is a more acceptable fetish in Japan than any other country I've come across, the fact that they had vending machines selling used school-girls' panties illustrates this.

I'm sure that men of a certain age in the West are just as delighted about schoolgirls as those kind of men in Japan, the difference is that in Japan it is perhaps not so much of a taboo.
Look at anime for example, a lot of the mainstream stuff feature schoolgirls looking and dressing like porn-stars.
Japan is also very male-dominated, in countries like that male fantasies are expressed considerably more in the media than women's.
Look at Italy too, italian tv and media is full of scantily clad women.

So the problem is that the culture is too male oriented, the same can be said about all countries in the world, its a question of degree.
Also, we tend to notice these things more when we look at foreign countries, we don't notice it as much in our own countries.
In the US for example there's been complaints about kids' clothes being too sexy, like see-through panties and thongs for 12 year old girls.
From an West European perspective child pornography seems to be promoted just as much in the US as in Japan.

Rumors involving Adachi schoolgirl murder and Iijima Ai?

Question:

I was trying to do a little research on the life of the late Japanese AV actress/TV talento Iijima Ai, and found some allusions to a rumor of involvement with the participants in the heinous 1989 confinement and torture/murder of high school girl Junko Furuta. Unfortunately, my Japanese reading ability isn't so hot, and I can't understand the gist of the rumor... It appears she may have known some of the youths who were later arrested?

If I search the internet using roman letters "Iijima Ai", almost no English language information comes up at all, and nothing referring to this rumor whatsoever.

But if I search her name in Japanese "飯島 愛", and add "足立" (Adachi) a lot of blogs and articles come up that refer to both Iijima Ai and the murder in the same story... Some seem to imply that she (Ai) was the victim of an extortion plot that stemmed from her involvement with the murderers. I can't tell really; the Google translation is semi-nonsense.

I know this is a longshot, but is anyone out there familiar with this rumor? If so, could you just summarize in a paragraph or two what the rumor is?

Thanks for any info.

Answer:

It's just a groundless rumor. She's got nothing to do with the murder case.

Addition:
>Edit to add: I am sure it is groundless, but I would like to know what the rumor is...

Rumor is that the main suspect was her BF.

Could the reason be why I love Japan so much is because all I watched as a child was anime?

Question:

I mean seriously, all my favorite shows were anime. Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade, Yugioh, DBZ, Monster Rancher, Medabots, heck even Hamtaro!

Could this be a reason why?

Answer:

>because all I watched as a child was anime?

Anime, or you can say "Japanese anime"

Addition:
@少林
OK. But I did not mean to talk about grammar. I just wanted to say that he likes Japan because he used to watch "Japanese" cartoons, not cartoons from other countries. (If it's not appropriate to use anime to differentiate cartoon from Japan and from other countries.)

Do Japanese People wave hello to other people?

Question:

Do Japanese People wave hello to other people like how we do in america?

Answer:

Depends on the situation. It's not unusual to see friends or people who are comfortable with each other waving (my students used to wave to me). But a more formal situation would require a more formal greeting, like a bow.

Do Japanese students aspire to come to live in Europe or North America, or do most just stay in Japan?

In general, are Japanese guys more attracted to Japanese girls or girls that are half Japanese and half white?

Question:

Answer:

There is no way to compare those 2.

The number of "girls that are half Japanese and half white" is extremely low in Japan (I think it's less than 1% of Japanese girls) that most Japanese guys just don't have any chance to talk to them in their life.

When they want to have a date, they usually go to a Japanese girl because that's the majority of girls in Japan.

Japanese katte v. motte?

Question:

I'm taking Rosetta Stone Japanese and it doesn't translate anything. Usually this is OK, but I'm really stumped on this one. Here are two sentences:

kare wa kuruma o motte imasu. (Picture of a man with his hand on a car behind him)
onnanokotachi wa uma o katte imasu. (Pic of two girls hugging a horse. On girl is in front of it, the other on it)

Whenever I come across motte or katte, their meanings seem inconsistent. Do they mean "have," "with," "behind," "touch?" I can't figure it out or what the difference is.

Answer:

kare wa kuruma o motte imasu.
--> He has/owns/possesses a/the/this car.

onnanokotachi wa uma o katte imasu.
--> These girls have/keep/own a/the/this horse. ("kau" is used for animals/pets)

if you want to say "girls patting a horse";
--> "uma o sawatte iru shoujo-tachi (onna-no-ko-tachi)"

What are some good boarding school ideas for Japan?

Question:

Hello, I'm 13 and I've wanted to go to Japan my whole life. I wanted to know if there were any good boarding schools in Japan for 9-12th grade. I want to start paying now if it is expensive.

Answer:

>I wanted to know if there were any good boarding schools in Japan for 9-12th grade

If you ask if there are any good boarding schools in Japan, yes there are some.

I think you have to pay about $100,000 for 3 years. USD is getting particularly weaker these days. So you have to pay more than you had a few years ago.

Does Otaku おたく also mean "you" in japanese?

Question:

I used to play this this game called "my japanese coach" and it said that using anata was alittle rude and informal and japanese people prefer to just use the persons name instead but if for some reason you want to say "you", then you can use the word otaku おたく which you probably know to mean "anime nerd" but it also has another meaning of you.

Is this true. Im alittle skeptical because if i use this word it will mean im trying to be formal and i dont want to call people im trying to be polite to a nerd -_-

Answer:

It should be:
Otaku おたく means "you", it's ALSO slang that describes 'geek', like "anime nerd"

"お宅のお子さん otaku no okosan", meaning "your child' but used towards 'strangers'
"お宅はどちらですか?otaku wa dochira desuka?" to strangers/ to superior
meaning "Where do you live?"

"anime nerd" are said to use "お宅 otaku (meanig YOU)", even toward their 'classmates'.
e.g. otaku, shukudai yatta? --> sounds weird (meaning "Did you get your homework done?")

That's how the word "otaku" started describing those people, actually.

*Referring to "otaku" makes longer distance relationship.

Anime distribtuion companies in Tokyo?

Question:

I am going to Tokyo soon and am looking to make business connections with distributors in Japan that sell anime goods. I wanted to know what companies are in Tokyo Japan that I can visit while I'm there. I am looking to buy figures, plush and some accessory items that are all anime related. They should be manufactured by companies like Good Smile, Takara Tomy, Megahouse, Square Enix, Banpresto, etc

Answer:

For a businessman, you ain't too savvy. Try Google. I know, it's tough. Gotta' open that browser. (Oh, wait, you did that posting the question!) Go to Google or with many browsers there's a box at the top where you can type in what you want. Type is something really creative. I mean CREATIVE. Let's see, for your situation, hmmmm, how about "Anime distribution companies in Tokyo"? I know, I don't know HOW I can be so creative. Can't teach you, sorry.

Point is, if you would DO this, you'll get a lot of things called links. Here's one, which was the first one of the list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ani…

Guess what you will get if you go to this link? A list of anime distribution companies in Tokyo. Amazing, isn't it.

Good luck with your 'business'.

Learning japanese. katakana, hiragana, romaji and kanji?

Question:

i'm definitely leaving kanji till last as it's hard and time consuming.
katakana, romaji or hiragana first? which is easier? which is more commonly used in japanese writing?
thanks

Answer:

People (Japanese kids, foreigners) begin with hiragana and katakana.
kanakana is used for those words coming from foreign words.
e.g. 1. ドア --> door, 2. カルタ --> carta (Portuguese), 3. キオスク --> киоск (= kiosk --> Russian)
romaji is phonetic notation for these (both hiragana and katakana) using LATIN alphabet, and we rarely use them in our writing actually.
e.g. 1. doa 2. karuta 3. kiosuku

Best way to organize a trip to Aomori, Japan?

Question:

I'm planning on travelling to Aomori, Japan around the 23rd of August. I need to get to a town called Rokunohe. Can anyone help by telling me what the best (and cheapest) airport to land at would be? Various sites only seem to offer Narita, but Google says that that's almost 6 hours away from my destination.

I've never been to Japan before, so any help would be appreciated!

Answer:

You can't expect any "cheapest" airport to Rokunohe because it takes much money to take a flight in Japan.

Local airports in Japan do not have many international flights. So you must land on Narita first of all. Then take a domestic flight, train or bus to Rokunohe.

The closest airport is this Misawa Airport.
http://www.misawa-airport.co.jp/english/…

You can take a local train to Rokunohe from there.

You need to go to another airport in Tokyo (Haneda) to take a flight to Misawa.

Amount I should save for 2 weeks in japan?

Question:

I live In California, USA. I plan on going to japan next year probably in late spring or summer time. How much do you think I should save up? I plan on going to as many main attractions as I can within the 2 week period.

I was thinking of doing a home stay program so i can get to know the culture better. If you have any good suggestions for a good program, please let me know.

Answer:

Once again there is no set amount in these kind of scenarios (which we see almost every week) you are in charge of you finances so you alone know how much you can afford. If i said bring $10k for a nice time and you don't have that kind of amount what will you do? probably freak out i guess. So bring as much as you can afford without going broke i.e. getting loans, overdrafts etc.
