What are some really sad Asian dramas?

Question:

Ive already watched Koizora & 1 Liter Of Tears.

Thanks guuuuys (: .

Answer:

I really like "Kita no Kuni Kara". It's not sad per se, like a depressing series, but almost every episode has something that will make your eyes well up uncontrollably.

Starting a nuka doko for the first time..(Japanese pickles)?

Question:

I've been wanting to have my own nuka doko for a while now and so I've purchased some iri nuka from my local grocer. After carefully reading the back of the packages (I can speak some Japanese), there wasn't any mention on how to season the nuka for the first time. I've read slices of ginger and (of course) kombu and garlic but how long do I keep them in the bed? Do I keep them in for the suggested 4-5 days or should I insert new flavoring agents daily? Also, I can't find a traditional toko for my nukadoko, so would I be able to use tupperware? I know that completely sealing the bed is a no-no, so I would leave the lid *very* lose. Thank you :)

Answer:

Hope this site will help you.

Anybody that lives in Tokyo? What's it like there?

Question:

Are things expensive there?
What is Shibuya like?
Is there a lot of crime there?

Answer:

I've visited Tokyo, although have never lived there.

Things aren't super expensive, about the same prices as you would see in any modern, large city. A (big) meal costs around 9 or 10 dollars, if you go to one of the standard vending machine food places. Other things like clothes and shoes have a wide range; common brands of shoes (Nike, Tiger etc) are around $60-100 a pair, but of course you can go cheaper and more expensive if you like.

Shibuya is pretty cool, quite trendy and fashionable, and apparently the home of bubble-gum J-Pop. Shibuya is famous for it's six-ways crossing, where a 'sea of humanity' streams across the intersection at all hours of the day. We camped out at Starbucks at one end of the intersection and watched for a while, but you have to be sneaky in taking photos because the waitresses will give you the bum's rush at the first sign of a camera.

There is no crime in Japan. I read about and witnessed the seedy side of Shinjuku, and I am sure you can find trouble there if you wanted to, but people just don't get attacked and robbed out of the blue. Tokyo is fine wherever you go.

I am expecting a parcel from Japan. It was sent 10/4/2011 via EMS but i haven't received it yet up to now.?

Question:

Based on the online tracking result, last oct.6,2011, there has been an attempted delivery of the package but the report said i was not around which is not true because i never went out of the house since i was really waiting for that EMS delivery. What is the best thing for me to do to be sure that the said package will still be delivered to me since i paid too much for the service in order that it will be delivered to me 2 -3 days after mailing? It contains very important documents which i need to sign and submit before the oct.8 deadline but it seems i will be paying penalties since today is already oct.8 if ever that EMS parcel will not come on this very day. Will EMS pay me for the damages they caused me?

Answer:

I think your local post office is keeping it. So call them and ask them to deliver it right now. But October 8 is too early as a deadline if it was shipped on October 4. So you should have had more time.

Where can I find "Memoirs of a Geisha" merchandise?

Question:

I'm looking for the hair accessories that the character Sayuri - Zhang Ziyi was wearing in the movie Memoirs of a Geisha.
I obviously cannot travel to Japan. And I've looked in local stores around. Can't find anything like it.
Are there any websites selling this? or any stores that anyone might know of?
Does anyone know where I can find this?

Like the flower accessory(right) or even that metal pin on the left side.
Example:

http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=Memoirs+of…

Answer:

First of all, the vast majority of the scene in the movie was shot in California - not Japan. The set and costume were either made by the studio prop and set department or bought from local outlets in California - probably from Japantown (the Japanese version of Chinatown). Most of the hair accessories were probably made in China since the real ones would be very expensive.

There are many online companies that sales similar products, BUT I can't vouch for their legitimacy. For example, here is one - http://www.wholesale-dress.net/fashion-r…

Is Japan better than US when it comes to technology?

Question:

Answer:

Depends on what you mean by better. Nearly all the high tech goods Japan export were invented in the US and Europe, but the Japanese were able to refined the technology and manufacture and market it at an affordable price before other companies in the US and Europe.

The Japanese are very good in applying technology, but they are not very good at discovering new paradigms.

Go to college in Japan?

Question:

I plan on going to college in Japan?
I am now a 10th grader and I plan on going to college abroad in Japan then living there. I plan on teaching English there too, but I really want to teach at a University in Japan. As time comes, probally own a night club or apartments....
But the main thing is getting there. What are the requirements: my GPA?
Perfect grades? Whatever I need to do, I'll do it. My parents won't pay for this so it is up to me. I can perhaps go for a scolarship in Japan right? I know some japanese and I am still working towards being more fluent. (I'm not close to bing fluent yet but I really enjoy the language)
I'm not sure if this will help but I am great at writing: I write about fantasies.
Perhaps I can start writing books to earn some money to help pay? I know that if I go to college in America, I can get transfered but I want to start there and finish there. Then start living there.

Thank You for your help

How can I live for 1 month in Japan on $2000?

Question:

Hi everyone, I'm moving to Japan this November to teach and have been struggling to save up enough money. We don't get paid for one month, and the company recommends that I arrive in Japan with 200,000 yen ($2600 approx) to live on initially. But so far it looks like all I'll be able to save up is around $2000. I do not have to pay key money or a deposit on the apartment (100sq ft), just the first month's rent of about $500. I have to set up the utilities and am responsible for my own food/drink for the whole month. I will live within walking distance to work, so I won't have to pay for bus fare or the train. The company gives us $200 for a small "start-up" budget, so in essence I will have $2,200 when I land (168,700 yen approx). If I kept a very tight budget and only spent money on:

- food
- rent ($500)
- setting up gas/water/electric
- setting up internet OR a landline phone (instead of a cell, I was going to skype my family)
- international phone cards (to phone home once a week in case I can't afford internet)

Could I conceivably do this? Would I ever be able to eat out with coworkers or friends? What other money-saving techniques can I use? Oh! And I will be living in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Thanks!

Answer:

It's possible but very tight. You can squeeze by with 30,000 yen for food if you are very frugal (buying fruits and vegetables from cheaper street vendors, buying bread at a discount near its expiration date, and so on) - you don't have to eat just rice every day - that's total nonsense.
But is your place already furnished? Does it have a bed or do you need to buy a futon? Getting stuff for it can be very high - look for some other foreigner's sayonara sale to pick up some things cheap - including the telephone subscription account, which otherwise will cost you almost 40,000 yen. There are over 8500 foreigners in Shizuoka City, but many don't stand out like you will.

Why do certain property in Japan had roof covers placed on top of their fences?

Question:

I've seen some houses in Japan which installed roof covers on top of their concrete/bamboo fences. Furthermore, on certain properties even the fence entrance itself had an unbelievably large roof built on top of it.

Does the roof serve a specific purpose/cultural reasons, or was it built purely for its aesthetic looks?

Honestly, I think they are very beautiful and exotic.

Answer:

Are you talking about walls as seen in the pictures below?
If these are what you are talking about, yes it's built for aesthetic looks, reducing weather stain, and protecting from erosion.

EDIT
sorry, I really don't know how it is called officially/specifically. maybe "屋根塀 yanebei" ? That said, I'm not sure how many Japanese ppl could picture it when asked, "do you know "屋根塀 yanebei"?
I guess, most of Japanese ppl would simply say, "that is a wall/fence with a roof cover on top of it."

How much is a furisode? For coming of age day..?

Question:

How much would a furisode set be? if I buy one?
Would it be cheaper to borrow than buy?
Also does anyone know how much it is to go to a salon and get dressed up and let them do your hair?
Thanks!
I'll be going next year ^^ so, it'll be nice if people have any experience about it!

Answer:

If you get second-hand (or you're super lucky and find a sale, like I did when I bought my full set), you can buy the furisode, fukuro or maru obi, juban, obi jime, and obi age for $1000 or less. Adding other accessories (some of which will be required, like zori and tabi) will of course raise that price. A brand-new furisode alone can cost as little as $1000 or well over $20,000 and every price in between. The most expensive furisode I have had the pleasure of seeing in person so far cost 2.5 million yen, but I'm sure more expensive ones exist. A nice obi can go for hundreds at least. Depending on whether or not you're willing to buy second hand, it is most likely cheaper to rent than to buy.

If you're oriental background residing in Japan, which green tea brand/type is your favorite and why?

Question:

Answer:

We drink Green Tea 3-4 times a day in Japan and usually together with our meal. My favourite types are:

Sencha which has a perfect balance of sweet and bitter flavours.

Gyokuro which is a little expensive but is grown in the shade of the sun to give it a naturally sweet aftertaste and soft aroma.
