Japanese drama recommendation for a non-fangirl...?

Question:

Does anyone have any Japanese drama recommendations for someone who tends to dislike the most popular dramas? I am hoping for something with well-rounded/well-acted characters, and believable plot lines. I really need to keep up my Japanese skills while in the US, but I'm having a hard time finding one to watch. I seriously disliked Hana Yori Dango (no offense to fans, just my personal taste), and I have a hard time enjoying shows with really overwrought acting. However, I love Japan and would be really excited to find a show from there that I could get into.

Furuhata Ninzaburo

What is a good romantic anime to watch?

Question:

i've been looking for a new romantic anime to watch. i've seen basically all the popular ones (vampire knight, skip beat, furuba, bleach, ouran high school, kaichou wa maid sama, etc. etc) and i liked those fine. but i want to watch one without so many love triangles all the time. i really liked kaichou wa maid sama, but it was to like, cute and innocent and perfect and all that. and i want more that focuses on their relationship and not so many side stories. not to sound pervy or anything, but i want one thats more serious than just your average grade school puppy dog love. is there a more serious one any of you know of. thanks in advance! :)

Any Kind of Japanese Powder Mix Drink, similar to koolaid that I can buy?

Question:

I have a Japanese party coming up for Japanese club in School, and I am in charge of a lot, as the club's secretary. I am trying to find a beverage option, that is similar to Koolaid powder, and is Japanese, so I can make it in mass to quench the thirst of about 60 people. Anything CHeap and Japanese, where all I have to do is add water, and I can make a couple pitchers?

Answer:

I can think of two unique Japanese drinks that are made from a concentrate then mixed with water.

Poccari Sweat is a Japanese sports drink that often comes in a powdered form that needs to be mixed with water. It has a very mild, slightly citrus like flavour and turns into a semi-opaque liquid.

Calpis is a unique and refreshing drink that tastes a bit like Yakult or other yoghurt based drinks, made by lactic fermentation. This usually comes in a concentrated liquid that is mixed with water to create Calpis Water.

Unfortunately, both of these options can be rather expensive as they are usually imported from Japan.

If you are looking for a cheap drink that you can serve quickly and easily to a large number of people, I would recommend green tea. Cold green tea is extremely refreshing, tastes great and one of the healthiest drinks around.

I used to buy these special tea bags that are long and thin. You fill up a large 2 litre bottle of water and then add the long, thin teabag to it. The bag attaches to the top of the bottle and slowly infuses the water with green tea.

Otherwise, you can easily make a large amount of green tea with normal tea bags and brew in cold water for a few hours.

How to live in Japan?

Question:

I'm 18, just out of high school and i really want to move to Japan and work there. What should i do? What are some leading jobs over there?
P.S. How much college(if any) should i attend? Bachelors? Masters?

Answer:

In most cases in order to work full time in Japan you need to have a University degree and you also require the backing of a company in Japan to sponsor your visa.

The most common form of employment among foreigners is teaching English.

If you are eligible you might want to consider the Working Holiday Program. The Working Holiday program is open to young citizens (between 18 and 30) from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, France, Germany, Ireland and the UK: those eligible may apply for working holiday visas without having a job offer.

Besides teaching English, what type of degree should I get if you want to work in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

You don't need a degree in English to teach English in Japan (unless you want to teach at the university level). Any degree will do as long as it is at least a Bachelor's degree. If you want to work in some other field, you would need an appropriate degree, proficiency in Japanese, and you would need to offer something above and beyond what your native Japanese competitors for the job can offer.

Okay so In china I had this drink that came in all different flavors like apple, pineapple, grape, lichee, strawberry, etc. It is a gatorade bottle shape, but smaller (shorter). Although I bought it in China it had Korean writing on it (maybe it was japanese I forget but I think it was probably Korean). Anyways, I forget what it was called and I really want to know! it had like chunks of some kind of fruit in it that "absorbed" the juice flavor, but it was fun to drink cuz the chunks were weird. It was called like "nata de coco" chunks? Can anyone tell me what this drink is?

Seishun 18 Kippu 5 day pass?

Question:

How does this work? Can I only use it 5 times? (meaning get from A to B uses 1/5) Or is it anytime during the day for 5 days? (As in I could travel to Tokyo to somewhere else as many times as I wanted to in a day and it would only count for 1/5 days)

Answer:

You can use it for 5 days unlimited (JR local/rapid trains) per day.

So on day 1 if you rode 500 JR local or rapid trains that is fine (of course only an extreme example).

Also it DOES NOT need to be consecutive days.

So if you wanted to ride trains on Monday then activate it monday, not use it Tuesday or Wednesday but start using it again on Thursday, that is OK too.

"One day" is not a 24 hour period, but rather, one day, so if you started using the pass at 9pm it will expire at 12am or at the final operating train of the day (for Tokyo and Osaka regions).

Life in Japan... 30 +?

Question:

I will graduate from my bachelor degree when I'm 28 (I have some working experience) and my life in Japan may start as early as when I'm just about to turn 30. But I really want to become a part of the young community, those who are between 24 and 28. Is that possible?

Answer:

Depends, of course the more you speak Japanese the more you can communicate with the Japanese.

Reading, writing and actually speaking a language are very different things. Vocabulary and comprehension is very important. Remember a 1st grader in America can read the alphabet A-Z but give them a copy of the New York Times and they will be bewildered.

So keep your Japanese studies up.

As for being part of the young community, the question is what do you plan to do in Japan? What groups will you be part of, remember Japan is all about being part of groups, being introduced to other people etc, that is all dependent on who's around you, who you initially meet, and who they introduce you to. That's the game of "LIFE".

Are Japanese & Filipinos Asians or Pacific Islanders?

Question:

I know some people say Indians aren't Asian since they don't look like Chinese or other East Asians, but India is in Asian and India does share borders with China. But Buddhism started in India and is popular in Japan, so Indians have a lot in common with other East Asians. I don't know where Middle Eastern came from because there is no such thing. I also hear Filipinos aren't Asian since Spain took over the country and that's why they have Spanish influences...

Okay, so my question is some people think Filipinos aren't Asian, they are Pacific Islanders because Philippines are on an islands. But then Philippines in located in Asia though, so if Filipinos are considered Pacific Islanders then wouldn't Japanese people be considered Pacific Islanders as well, since Japan is also on islands like the Philippines? I'm confused because i thought they both were considered Asians. And yes, I'm also mixed with Filipino & Japanese as well.

Answer:

I agree that Filipinos are part of Ethnic Malays.
Although many of them look different from typical Malays as a result of 400-year Spanish occupation, some Filipinos (who do not have Spanish blood) still look like Malays. Some people who are said to be indigenous to the island of Mindanao (the southern most island in the Philippines) look more like the Pacific Islanders. I guess there must have been extensive population movements among them in the ancient period, including many islanders of Indonesia today.

The Japanese are part of East Asians. But interestingly enough, there are clear differences among the Han Chinese, Koreans and Japanese. It is obvious that these three races did not have blood mixture even in the prehistorical times. My personal observation is that the Japanese look more like Mongolians. I believer major portion of our ancestors came from the area that we call Mongolia today. Our archaeological discoveries show that our ancestors were already here on this Japanese archipelago at least 20,000+ years ago.

Note:
Someone above said that the Ainu is an indigenous race in Japan. It is not true; they came from north eastern part of Russia; probably from the Sakhalin or the Kamchatka Peninsula through the Kuril Islands when the geographical features in that area were quite different from Today.

Is it weird for a korean to learn japanese?

Question:

i hate the fact that koreans arent supposed to deal anything with japanese culture because of our past. i grew up with anime and video games and yeah...ill admit japanese culture has influenced me alot. my grandma was raised in japan so she knows japanese as well. im fluent in korean but i just want to be fluent in japanese as well. lots of my favorite mangas take forever to be translated and i hope learning the language will help me explore more anime, manga or anything japanese pop culture related.

could it be that bad? i have some japanese friends in my school and they want to learn korean cuz they are obsessed with kpop and the hot drama actors.

Answer:

Oh herro,
wtf no!! Its completely fine to be Korean and learn Japanese!
There's lots of Korean stars who visit Japan, is that wrong? No!

Yes, I'm Japanese, I visited Japan recently and I saw tons of Korean stuff Especially in Tokyo. My cousin is obsessed with Kara too. My aunt went to a meet and greet event to see a Korean actor.
I personally Have absolutely nothing against Koreans and their culture, although I would be against the ones that hate Japan because of the past... But remember, The past is the past. its passed so why bring to the present again..

Traveling around in Japan?

Question:

I'm planning my trip to Japan but I really know little about their transportation. I've seen people mention JR pass but that's 45,000 yen! Too much for my low budget. So how can I travel around? Lets say....
Just around Tokyo for about 10?
From Nagano or Gunma to Tokyo?
From Nagano or Gunma to Tokyo and then back later the next week?
From Nagano or Gunma to Tokyo and later Kyoto?
Thanks for any help but I hope to get good answers as I'm clueless to this and can't find help!

Answer:

How do you get to Nagano or Gunma prefecture from Narita (Airport) in the first place?
If you want to go to one of the prefectures directly from Narita, you need to take slow local lines by changing trains from one to another all along the way. It sure is a very complicated and time-consuming travel especially for foreigners who have language difficulties in Japan. I would not recommend it.
You should come to Tokyo first. From Tokyo, you can go to both Gunma and Nagano prefectures fairly easily by taking bullet trains (shinkansen).

But I'm afraid if you really know how to get to your "ryokan onsen" that are located in remote areas from Shinkansen stations. In case of Joetsu Shinkansen, there ae only two stops in Gunma prefecture. You will get off at one of these stations, but you still need to take local transportation (either trains, bus, or taxi) to get to your destination. Even if you get lost, nobody would help you in English. Are you ready?

BTW, your plan #1: "Just around Tokyo for 10 days" seems to be the worst plan. As a Tokyo resident (born in Osaka), I can tell that 3 days is enough for a sightseeing in and around Tokyo. You should visit Kyoto, Osaka and Nara areas as well. If I were a foreign visitor to Japan for the first time, I would Travel Around Japan by making the most of JR Pass for two weeks. JR Pass is incredibly (or criminally) cheap when you realize the fact that1) Tokyo-Osaka round trip ticket is around 25,000 yen, and 2) Tokyo-Nagano round trip (by Shinkansen) is around 15,000 yen. What if you can continue this gorgeous trip from Hokkaido to Okinawa for two weeks @ flat rate of 45,000 yen? It's a crime! I wish I could buy the pass.

Can any0ne help me out? I am looking for my MORI relatives in japan?

Question:

Hey i am looking for my family in japan. The name of my great grandfather was FELOMINO MORI, His s0n was MAXIMO MORI. AND hs SON was HELARI0N MORI. HS S0N IS MY GRANDFATHER IS AS0NCIANO MORI. All them are here in philipines. But felomino came fr0m japan. So if any0ne kn0ws my Relatives ther in japan let me kn0w? The last two year they came here and looking for us, they found my grandfather as0ncian0 m0ri. But he doesnt want to go with them back to japan.. I just want to kn0w them.

Answer:

Why not ask those ask those living relatives for assistance.
They can give you city names and first names.

Once you have the city and the first and last names of your relatives you should contact their city hall in Japanese for help. This may mean hiring a translator there in the Philippines or online.

Once you have the city name you can google to find out contact information for their city hall.

There will be a lot of waiting, paperwork and other bureaucratic headaches to deal with.
Perhaps you could work on improving your Japanese language skills while you wait.

How much would it cost from the UK to Japan for a one week holiday?

Question:

Can I have it in pounds please not dollars.

Okay now we got that out of the way how much would it cost to stay in Japan, Osaka.
Hotel, Resturants, Air plane ticket and back and ect what would be the total of it?.

Answer:

Let's try to break up component wise first:

1) Air ticket - round trip : Depends on the season but you may consider approx 600 Pounds for economy.

2) Hotel: For Tokyo minimum range would be 70 to 100 pounds per night. For Osaka etc minimum 50 to 80 Pounds per night. Options to cut down this cost: Home Stay using a website like Hospitality Club or using weekly apartments. Another innovative way is to stay in Love Hotels which would be equally good but quite cheaper than the standard hotels.

3) Internal Travel: The domestic travel is quite expensive in Japan, especially if you travel by Shinkansen (Bullet Train). For example Toyo to Osaka round trip would be Pounds 250. Ways to cut cost: rail Pass (www.japanrailpass.net), www.jrpass.com, www.kintetsu.com/jrpass) and/or using night buses (www.japan-guide.com/e/e2015.html or www.willexpress.com etc).

4) Food: Again depends but minimum you should consider 4 to 5 pounds per meal.

5) Entertainment: No limit.

Please note that as I have taken care of some students who wanted to visit Japan, I have mentioned mostly the minimum pricing.

Visiting Japan. I live in South Carolina, what gifts should I bring the family?

Question:

I'm going to Japan in December to stay with a Host family for a few days. I'm from South Carolina, and I have NO idea what Japanese people would like or are interested in from the US/South Carolina. Any suggestions?

Answer:

Special packaged foods/candies that are regional and very South Carolina-ey that one wouldn't find anywhere else in the US are a good place to start. Canadians always have their maple syrups. Are there any specialties like honeys. They have honey but not like we have honey here. Also, good candies like premium chocolates. A lot of my Japanese friends love See's chocolates and actually request them. They're not high-end by any means, but they're very popular. (They may be a West Coast product, or at least hard to find back East). Hope this helped a little...
